True Food Kitchen had the good sense to plunk itself down in the middle of Midtown. It's in the beating heart of that mixed-use development and it's good for your beating heart, too. This place is fresh and healthy and makes you feel good about eating good. The first time I was here, it was a gorgeous "Florida winter" day so we sat outside-lunch on the large patio. This time, with a different group of friends, we were inside-on a Saturday evening. Glad we had a reservation. Because it was bustling and humming. But the vibes were still happy and healing. (As were the cocktails! The spicy pineapple margaritas are fantastic!) My fiends each ordered something different: a burger for one, a salad for another and a pizza for yet another. They were each delighted with their choices. I went for two appetizers: the charred cauliflower... which was excellent (those dates!) and a seasonal butternut squash soup that was unforgettably good-it satisfied both stomach and soul. One friend savored a Manhattan and two were all into the lavender matcha. Four completely different palettes but the same happy feeling. My husband and I visited true Food Kitchen to try their Valentine's Day set menu. We were also there during happy hour. The service was so bad. It took so long to get our drinks. We only ordered beer and wine so it should have been simple. The red wine on happy hour is awful!! The food on the special Valentine's Day tasting menu was decent but they messed up our order then simply removed from the exact same plate the meat that we did not want leaving small pieces of the meat and sauce on the salad. I came back because some girlfriends of mine love this place and some wanted to try it. I love the menu organization, with the macros, allergens, and customization options listen very clearly. I got the Korean Noodle bowl for the second time and it was interesting because this particular bowl felt like a different dish than I one I had 2 weeks ago. I loved both versions of the dish though! I got tofu as my protein and I appreciated so much how it was grilled and not fried. I love both tofu styles but grilled is my preferred. The air-fried fries were soggy and had an unusual flavor -- with air frying, food usually needs to be tossed periodically to cook evenly. The refresher was decent and tasted healthy, though it leaned a bit too citrus-bitter for my preference. The burger itself was very good, but I noticed a small hair on top (visible if you zoom in on the photo). I also saw some kitchen staff without beard nets, so that may have been the cause. Furthermore, I had requested the sauce on the side, but the bun and lettuce arrived heavily saturated. To their credit, the staff replaced the bun and lettuce right away, which I appreciated. The staff were friendly, but seemed a bit busy and sometimes were not always attentive to the table. Bright side - the size of the salad was huge. One of my favorite restaurants (for healthier choices that is) to dine at. This particular location is in the "new" Midtown area of Dale Mabry. We've visited here a 3-4x and my only complaint is the long wait to order/get service and the time it takes to get your food. It's never packed or busy when we come here, so I'm not sure why it seems to take a while to place your order. The staff are very friendly and we never seem rushed. I don't have a favorite dish, but I do like all the healthier options to choose from. So before I go into the unique menu, terrific food, excellent staff, lovely atmosphere, and super caring kitchen, I want to address the restroom situation. We had avoided True Food at this location because we'd read reviews here and on Google about the restrooms. Most were negative and said things that implied the restrooms were outdoor facilities basically open to "the street", filthy and unsanitary. Our experience couldn't have been further from the truth. While the restroom entrances are outdoors, they are blocked off from the casual passer by and are only accessible through True Food's patio seating area. We found both the men's and women's to be clean, well stocked, and perfectly fine. I am very particular about public restroom cleanliness (OK, I'm a bit of a freak about it), especially in restaurants. If you have been hesitant to try True Foods because of all the "bad potty" reviews, I get it; it's a little weird. But I promise you the restrooms are just fine and you won't regret giving True Food a chance. We started with the Kale Aid and the Sparkling Pear Cactus Tisane which were both refreshing and delicious. I had the Mediterranean Breakfast Bowl and Clyde had the Southwest Tofu Scramble. Both were fabulous. I really appreciated that our server caught that my pita was not gluten free. She whisked my plate back to the kitchen and within five minutes I had a completely new plate with the gluten-free bread. Super impressed with how seriously they took my food allergies! The interior is beautiful, but the outside patio is the great attraction here. It's spacious & lovely, with live music playing in the plaza and people watching at its best. For those who don't know (because we didn't) Midtown is an upscale outdoor mall/community space shops, restaurants, and vendor markets on weekends. There is free garage parking. It's a bit of a drive from our side of the Bay, but it's well worth it. Highly recommend! read more

Highly disappointed with their lack of draught beer. Cans don't make it. With lots of margaritas on the drink menu I really expected to find a frozen concoction to ease us into sublime Olivia, our server, said they didn't have the appliance. . . Yet?!! Disappointed I was but Olivia suggested the spicy fruity margarita special. Eh? So so. I had the spicy jambalaya pasta. This is a new item and I didn't leave hungry. But more could have been done to enhance the experience. There were no accompaniments. This is a gluten free restaurant but there are alternative crisps that would have complimented the pasta. Luckily, TFK will always get 5 stars from me because their dishes are always clean, healthy, and delicious. The Grilled Sustainable Salmon Entree with wild rice pilaf, snap peas, and Thai basil vinegarette has become my new favorite dish at about 600 calories per serving. Clean Eating is something that's intriguing, and I'm guessing by the name and their messaging, that everything here is quality and fresh, and while eating it seemed that way for sure. I guess I'll take them on their word. Hope it's all clean stuff. The side kale salad was a steal at 4 bucks and I'd get it again if I needed a meal enhancement. The shrimp lettuce wraps were also good. The lettuce was small which worked out great actually as I just made single shrimp wraps so I just popped my mouth to the "gape" position, and ate my crafted "wrap" in one bite. That peanut sauce was good! They have a bunch of bowls as well and they can substitute grains for rice and vice versa (rice versa?). Good pivots and lots of substitution options in their meals. The outside bathrooms were pretty disgusting. I'm guessing people in the streets see it and use it and just wee-wee all over the place. Huge miss for this establishment. The floors were soaked! 1 Star Bathrooms! It's in Midtown Tampa and was right across from the Aloft/Element hotel so super convenient for a quick bite. The food isn't spectacular, although I do like the bowls. Everything is healthy, organic, and not infested with slop like at most other restaurants. The $11.95 Roasted Brussel Sprouts here are slightly above average. Good, but not great. The $11.95 Charred Cauliflower is along the same lines. The best item of the night was the $18.35 Ancient Grain Bowl (only 560 calories). I tried a $2.95 chocolate chip cookie. I'd pass on that in the future. read more

My daughter was staying at a midtown hotel and we decided to drive up to Tampa to have dinner with her. The restaurant is in a convenient location across from lots of shops, hotels and many restaurants. There is lovely green park type place between all of this where families and children can play on the playground or sit and talk. Olivia recommended the edamame dumplings which were very tasty. My daughter and I had the Korean Noodle Bowls, hers with blackened shrimp and mine with grilled chicken. Just give me a noodle and I'll be your best friend lol! The bowl consisted of rice noodles, mushrooms and some vegetables. At first I didn't think the portion was that big, but it was very filling. Dave had spicy Jambalaya with chicken, shrimp, sausage and rotini pasta. He said it was very flavorful and he enjoyed immensely. Went here for dinner on a Thursday night. Wasn't very busy, however, our waitress was very slow. We were left waiting longer than we should've, not sure if this was because we were outside or what. Food was okay, nothing was bad it just wasn't amazing. We got the pepperoni pizza, curry, and pesto lasagna. The lasagna barely had any pesto and was probably 75% crushed tomatoes which was a little disappointing to me. We also ordered the ice cream and cookie for dessert and I would give it a 5/10, not terrible just not what I was used to since everything was vegan. This place is a hidden gem. I've enjoyed the food and ambiance every visit. You cannot go wrong with any of their food items. The pasta. The pizza. The apps. You HAVE to try the guac. It's so fresh.
