This has always been one of our favorite spots to go to in Columbia. We were here a few weeks ago to have a dinner celebration after I proposed to my girlfriend. It was an exciting time and I loved getting to come to Tsunami to show my friends some great food. My now fiancé got her usual order, two KAT rolls. These sushi rolls are really good, made with shrimp, avocado, cream cheese, and best of all tempura fried. I got the GMC and Deluxe Crunch. My favorite part of the GMC is that it's topped with crab and spicy mayo mixed on top which is super tasty. And then the deluxe crunch is great because it you can't go wrong with a tempura fried roll with shrimp, crab, and cream cheese. And this time I got the chicken skewers which is the same chicken they use for their entrees and it was incredibly tender and flavorful. As always I had to get extra shrimp sauce and eel sauce for dipping pleasure. I cannot waaaait to come back the next time I'm in Columbia. read more

We were here late, the night before the eclipse when the place was slammed with customers! I don't know how they pulled off handling 8 people squeezed into a 4-person booth as efficiently and smoothly as they did! I've eaten plenty of sushi and Tsunami nailed it! We got a GNC roll and a Gamecock roll and they were both fabulously prepared. Although they don't have a children's menu, they managed to put together plates for our 3 and 4-yr-olds quite nicely for $5 each. It looked like adult portions and the kids scarfed it down! The chicken hibachi meal was delicious and their fried rice is prepared perfectly - not dry at all, like so many places. Our waiter, Matthew, was professional and handled our group with finesse. I ordered take out yesterday when I got home the chicken was tough and over cooked. Teriyaki sauce didn't taste like teriyaki sauce that was on the chicken. The rice is not the same rice they usually use it was so sticky and burnt. Like it had burnt flavor bc some of it was burnt. It was cheap at all and I tipped to be nice. The food here is great for the price. The sushi and entrees are great. The happy hour deal for sushi is amazing if you want to get your fill on sushi. The only reason I gave this 4 stars instead of 5 is because me and a group of friends went in and the hostess was very rude. We waited for 30 minutes and she grumpily responded to our questions of "how much longer?" I understand it's not the greatest situation for her, but you rudeness was uncalled for and we ended up leaving because of it. First time at this restaurant, 4 people. For appetizer we had Tempura and spring rolls. Tempura was good, spring roll was mushy and cold ordered chicken teriyaki which was very salty and chicken was rubbery. Other 3 people ordered sushi which came after my wife had finished her teriyaki I had to ask if the sushi that had been sitting on the counter for the last 15 minutes was ours. It was ours and he brought it over with no apology or concern that it had been sitting out. The smoked salmon salmon had been so smoked it was cooked the other ones were mediocre at best It was our daughters birthday which they told us they would bring fried cheesecake but it never showed up Needless to say this is not on our return list. I would recommend this restaurant if you're in the mood for hibachi but don't have the time for it. I wouldn't say it tastes as good as food from a hibachi grill, but it's still really good. Came here for a pre-prom dinner for my niece and it was the first visit for everyone in our party of 8. Our waitress was beyond mundane and if she offered her name, I would've used it every time she walked past our party without offering additional drinks or checking on us. I ordered edamame before we ordered our food, but somehow it arrived to the table AFTER... We ordered food for 8 people mind you, plus some sushi rolls! And when ordering, she did not get all the info,and had to come back and ask questions of soup or salad, type of rice, and cooking temperatures. They fixed it and it was delicious as always. Atmosphere was pleasant. It was fairly busy. The tempura was wonderful. The salmon was dry. I didn't finish it and salmon is one of my favorites. The service was poor at best with our waitress being very inattentive, to the point we had empty plates and glasses on our table for at least 20 minutes. She walked by many times without acknowledging us at all. Then charged an automatic 18% gratuity for a "large" party of 5 (large party would be at least 6 to 8). I typically tip at least 20% so this would not have bothered me at all if the service had been at least acceptable. I was utterly underwhelmed. I got the chirashi plate (assorted pieces of fish over rice) and was very disappointed. I had an abundance of warm rice under the most thinly sliced pieces of fish (that were also on the warm side) I have ever seen on a chirashi plate. The cost of the plate was around $18. I would have gotten more fish, and possibly a better assortment had I just ordered a roll and picked it out! I would have paid less too. The service was adequate. Normally, I wouldn't give this place 5 stars. Usually the service can be quite slow and not so good. But last night I was in the mood for sushi, and this place was open and nearby. Our server, not sure his name- a little bit older maybe late 20s/early 30s with facial hair- was great. Very laid back and attentive. The sushi was decent, not bad not great....although reasonably priced so I can't really complain. Service was good. The restaurant is showing its age though and you can tell it is well used by the college crowd. Carpet is trashed, menus all beat up and nasty, paint coming off trim etc. The real reason for only three stars though is the horrible music. Tsunami has a nice urban above-than-average contemporary feel to it. The space is energetic and fun to be in. We had dinner last night as part of some "field research" we were doing for a project, and have to say, was pretty happy with everything that came out. Amongst four of us, this is what we had: - Edamame - Veggie potstickers - G.M.C. - The Duffy - My..my..Mai! - Fried Wasabi Roll - Heartbreaker - Veggie Roll - Fried Vanilla Ice Cream Since I'm vegetarian, I only tried the edamame, potstickers, veggie roll, and fried vanilla ice cream. I've never had potstickers before and am glad to report my first time was very good. The vegetables were cooked well and seasoned well, and came out nice and hot. I really liked the ponzu sauce that they came with, had a nice zing to it. The veggie rolls were filling and tasty. I liked that they actually included a few vegetables inside (avocado, cucumber & tempura asparagus) and had more substance than most places, which usually serve just one. What I LOVED was Tsunami's "Japanese mayo" that they use on their Duffy dish. I asked for a side of it and was actually given quite a lot, and I totally took to it. It's creamy and punchy, I think they might have used some wasabi in it. Whatever the recipe, it gave my sushi a flavor I've never had anywhere else, and one that I totally liked. THE highlight though was dessert. I've never seen fried vanilla ice cream on a menu and was so intrigued by it. The texture and flavor were both great. Only wish they drizzled more chocolate sauce to give it a sweeter bite. It was still delicious though. Other things to point out: We sat at the bar and got a chance to watch the chefs prepare the rolls, and it was like watching theater. They're very graceful and coordinated with what they do, the movements are fluid. We got a chance to meet Take (sounds like Sake but with a T) and he was hilarious. He answered our questions and spent a good amount of time going over menu curiosities that we had. We learned that in Japan they typically insert the wasabi directly inside the sushi rolls, but the Americanized version is to place it on the side because for a lot of people the horseradish is too strong. He gave us pointers on the sauces and we learned how much a good sauce can enhance a dish. Parking can be tough as Katie pointed out. And I agree, it's worth the time to look around for a spot, Tsunami will make up for it. Also they've got different specials every day, you can check their website for what's going on the day that you're there. I had their champagne cocktails last night (only $3 b/c of their Ladies night special) and they were amazing. If you go, and you don't mind splurging (on the waist that is), def ask for the Japanese mayo, it's not the healthiest thing you can put in your system, but it IS a guilty pleasure! :) read more

Not worth it. Portions are small. I'm from California and I've eaten at dozens upon dozens of sushi restaurants. I had the shumai app and it was good, but tiny. I also had the pink dragon roll?... whatever it was, it was also tiny. I felt like I hadn't eaten anything after I was done and so did the other people I went with. However, the fried ice cream (normally tempura ice cream) was decent, but they only had vanilla. I heard a lot of college students go here, which I'm not surprised about because it seems like it's the trendy spot, but it doesn't make it good. I haven't tried any of the other sushi restaurants in the area, so maybe this is the best of columbia. I really hope not though! Also, $5 for parking in the lot, but you get reimbursed if you spend over $10 at the restaurant? I don't know... sounds pretty stupid. read more

My friend and I enjoyed our dinner here. We shared an udon noodle dish (it was on the smaller side, better for just one person) and 3 sushi rolls. The food was delicious and came out quickly even though the place was packed. Monday night was 1/2 off some stuff if you're in the service industry and they have other similar specials for the other nights of the week. I've had better at buffets and grocery stores. The server didn't offer soy sauce until I asked. The shrimp over fried rice was pretty good. It was unevenly cooked - some of the broccoli and zucchini were cooked until mushy, while some was practically raw. The dish was merely warm. My dining partner had the chicken and pineapple, which was pretty much the same as my entree. We saw a friend who ordered sushi to go using Tsunami's app an hour earlier. She sat with us for a solid half hour but couldn't convince any employees to care that her food still wasn't ready after 90 minutes.
