    Classic children's book in Vietnamese!
    Quang T.

Great customer service. Came here last month to buy children's books in Vietnamese; they have an excellent selection. The one I wanted only had 1 copy left, and it was among a big shelf of lots of other books. The man working there personally came and helped me sift through the shelf to find it. The one I bought ("Goodnight Moon" in Vietnamese) turned out to be missing one page, which I discovered after I got home. Brought the book back today. This being a Vietnamese shop, I was cautious to dig out my receipt and bring it, lest they give me a hard time about refunds. The same guy was at the counter. I showed him the problem. He looked in the computer and saw there was another copy. We checked that one and it had all the pages. Without hesitation, he gave me the other copy and took back the old copy (no time wasted recording any returns). He even apologized. Used to Vietnamese levels of customer service, I was impressed.

Since I live in OC, in the area with the largest Vietnamese population in the US, there has to be at least one Vietnamese bookstore. My community leader friends (thanks Ysa and Julie) pointed me to Tu Luc when I sought their advice. I was shopping for some children's books for my friends (they keep breeding) and thought I go old school instead of online shopping. I had came across some books online and was curious to see if they had some of the books in their store. It might helpful if you know some Vietnamese since this non-Vietnamese, of course, missed their store since I was just looking for Tu Luc but the storefront name is Nha Sach Tu Luc. Nha Sach apparently means bookstore in Vietnamese. (Feel to view my photo of the storefront) to avoid having to do a u-turn like I did. Parking was pretty easy amazingly for the weekend. Ventured in the store and luckily they had some English words for this non-Vietnamese. I browse the aisles and they also have some CDs and magazines. Majority of the book are in Vietnamese. I did find one of the children's books I was looking for. It was probably one of the rare few books that was in English. Majority of the books were in Vietnamese, which makes sense for the core clientle. They had a wide selection of books. Books from Vietnam and popular American books translated into Vietnamese, like Harry Potter (good) and Twilight (bad). Taking a mental note to perhaps purchase their Vietnamese language book for kids for future gifts . The book I bought was at full price so $3 more than if I had bought it on Amazon but it's worth it for me since I rather support a local business over Amazon any day. Staff speak minimal English but was able to find out their hours. They are open daily from 9:30am to 7:30pm, and you can check out their www.tuluc.com

Customer service has been nonexistence, no smile, no "welcome," no "how ya doing?" Nothing like that. But my biggest complaint is when I show up during business hours, they are not there. Like today- it's a Tuesday after Memorial weekend. The handwritten note taped to door says they'll return after the 25th. It's 1130 on Tuesday the 26th in the morning. Their hours are posted Tuesday from 10 AM to 6 PM. I've been waiting out front for 30 minutes and nobody is here and this is not a first.

How in the world did I let this used bookstore slip under the radar? It's been here for 20 years?…read more What? I feel so ignorant! We do not have many independent bookstores around anymore so to find this literally sparked joy! Glad husband and I had a chance to wander through this wonderland of books. There are a lot to dig, for sure. We spent a good hour there, most of it conversing with the owner, Thomas. He is really nice and knows his books for sure! It was super cool getting to know him in such a short period of time. Anyway, I guarantee that you will walk out with a book in hand! I found a couple books...this should keep me busy for a little bit, lol. Husband, of course found a few too, for his library. Every time I mention "let's go the bookstore", husband would always frown because we have so many books! I would respond, "would you rather me shop for another handbag?" LOL. Yea...I didn't think so. Reading is fundamental. Keep on reading and exploring and discovering new stories and adventures in a book near you. Come and support this local bookstore and keep it alive. We need them as much as they need us. Happy reading!

Out of the 2 locations I've been to, this has a better parking lot as well. Since the store is a lot bigger, that means a lot more selection of figures, books, manga, videos and more. In general, I do enjoy this store as it has great value. I found quite a few things that were quite cheaper here than if you go to a large retail store. If you have anything that you may want to get rid of (but works very well or in good shape) you can see if they're willing to it and give you an estimate. The staff are helpful to help you (the best of their ability) to find what you are looking for or need.

It's really disappointing to see how far they've fallen, especially when it comes to their pricing…read more I don't know what their strategy is with used games and movies, but they seriously need a reality check. In some cases, their used prices actually exceed MSRP. For example, they're charging $70 for a loose, boxless copy of Pokémon Legends: Z-A for the Nintendo Switch 2--which is full retail price for a second-hand, incomplete item. Their trade-in values are just as bad. It's not uncommon for them to offer you a tenth of what they plan to resell your item for. I get that the secondhand market relies on profit margins, and that they're banking on uninformed sellers looking for quick cash, but they're doing it at the expense of their loyal, long-time community. At this point, books are the only category where you can still find a decent deal. For anything else, you're much better off using eBay or finding a different store.

As usual, I am surprised that I had not dropped a review for this bookstore, and I am here at least once a month, at the very least. Immense selection of books greeting cards, gifts, fiction, nonfiction everything is arranged and organized accordingly. I just love this bookstore. Great big parking lot that is free but it is shared among many businesses at the Long Beach town center. Great experience each time. Prices are fair (compared to Amazon?) at least you can actually pick up a book. Read it at the café and if you decide to buy it go for it if not, then just return it.

You could potentially get away from buying books and just open them up and read them there at the store. They have a large variety that I dare say it's at the same level as if you shopped online, they seem to also have "saucey" content in the mangas sections. The staff is friendly and are knowledgeable so they can recommend you a book! They also have this... $40 Yearly Barnes and Nobles Subscription that knocks off 10% (20% at rare occasions within the year) for every purchase as well as a free cafe drink upgrade if the bookstore has a cafe (NOT A STARBUCKS, THEY WILL NOT ACCEPT STATBUCKS GIFT CARDS), and a free annual tote bag (you cannot double dip for a second bag until you renew it). Unless you're planning on spending $400+ for the next 12 months or you're a regular cafe go'er, I wouldn't say this is for you. The seating for the cafe is fine, but can fill up real easily with most customers that intend to stay more than an hour.
