Tuel Jewelers in downtown Charlottesville was established in 1945 as a watch repair shop. However, today it's a thriving full service store. During their early days Tuel's took in mostly Railroad watch repair and certification. As the years passed they expanded into a full-service jewelry operation offering a variety of watches, jewelry, and silver repair. Along with retail sales they offered machine engraving, bead restringing, and battery replacement. It was battery replacement that brought me in as they continue this. Service was friendly and they replaced the battery in minutes. They even polished the watch up. Today, Tuel Jewelers continues to offer a full-service family friendly jewelry business carrying fine jewelry in diamonds, pearls, platinum, gold, and silver; rings, pendants, and bracelets; Its hard to find a store that offers both Jefferson, Virginia, and Mint Julep cups. What a terrific place to discover as someone relatively new in Charlottesville. I've been to several well known big jewelers in town to try to get them to replace the antique opal ring left me by my dear mother, but most of them said they couldn't do it because it would damage the opal, the tips needed repointing, etc. Anyway, the store told how they work with opals to prevent any heat from damaging them, and said that some of the things the other jewelers told me needed doing did not really. Awesome! We also got a new watch band for my husband, and she replaced my watch band that had a funky way to clasp it, without charging me for a new watchband. Expertise and integrity. Before cleaning my rings, they checked them and tightened my diamonds - I didn't know they were even loose. My experience with Tuel Jewelers has been exceptional. I sent in two Bulova Accutron (214) tuning fork watches for service. Mary kept me informed throughout the process. Tuning fork watched require a very specific set of skills. Mary and Tuel Jewelers have these skills and then some. I just received the watches back. I could not be happier. These 1960s watches look and run like new. I should also mention that, while servicing these watches isn't cheap, Tuel Jewelers' pricing is fair and reasonable... half of what some charge. Took my 1970 Seiko 6139-6001 "Pogue" in for repair after I dropped it and it had stopped working. Turns out I had broken a major component in the watch. Took about 2 weeks for parts to come in and the repair. When I picked up the watch I was told if there were any issues to let them know. A few days later I noticed the pushers were having issues. Brought the watch in and they took it back for repairs, no questions asked. They held onto it for about a month (stating they wanted to be sure it was fixed properly this time), but didn't charge me for the repairs. The watch is working flawlessly now! I will be taking my vintage watches here for servicing in the future. The staff was very nice and professional. The only thing I wish is that it was fixed correctly the first time; HOWEVER, the fact they fixed the issue free-of-charge really shows that they stand behind their work. Was also a bit pricey, but hey, "You gotta pay to play" when it comes to vintage watches I guess. read more

I have only had minor repairs/alterations done by Tuel Jewelers but on each occasion have been impressed by speed, communication, customer service and price. On two occasions they have replaced my watch battery while I was in the store for $10 (battery price included). They have also reattached the glass face on the same watch after it fell off in under 24 hours for $35. Same time frame and price to get a link removed from my girlfriends bracelet. When I picked my wedding bands today, the woman there was so rude and started yelling at me and calling me names repeatedly and disresspecting me , how dare I ask her questions about the merchandise that I ordered and paid for , bullying me and reducing me to tears. She continued to insult me with names and told me to never come back to her store . I left the store shaking and crying . I could not believe what just happened, especially that I tried to be nice to her. The woman should not be at the counter abusing costumes like that with offensive name calling. This is so sad and so unprofessional . I will never ,ever return there knowing that this woman might be there and abuse their clients. Also, wanted to add that another lady that works there called me the following week and finally explained the question of leftovers to my husband and me ,and that all the gold that I provided to her was used in the process of making the two bands. Mary saved a fairly expensive (in my world) Luminox watch that I dropped (accidentally, but with force!) on a ceramic-tile bathroom floor, cracking the crystal and getting microscopic glass fragments everywhere including down in the works! This is the real deal. In business 71 years. Family owned, family operated (four family members in 3 generations there today when I visited). Totally "can-do" - replaced two watch batteries for in 10 minutes for well under $20. Other jewelers here send them out to be serviced and start at $25/watch. Sweet people. I'll be back. read more

They were EXTREMELY RUDE to me without provocation. My watch needed to be serviced with them for a few days so I asked for a receipt, which they had not offered me. Seems logical to me to get a receipt when leaving a $1,000 watch. Before leaving, I reviewed the receipt and politely asked a question about it. The manager/owner came over and tore up the receipt and very rudely told me they didn't want to service my watch any more. I was dumbfounded because things seemed pleasant until then. I tried pacify the shopkeeper but she just kept rudely telling me that I had been too picky and to take my business elsewhere. They did me a big favor because I found more reputable jewelers afterwards. Others were not surprised about my experience at Tuel and had horror stories of their own. There are far friendlier and more reputable shops in Charlottesville. read more
