Came here with a friend for dinner in August and this review is long overdue because I've been thinking about the meal ever since. Just the meal, not the friend ;) I'm not vegetarian but once in a while I do like veg options when I go out to eat since I don't cook veggie at home too much. Last I checked my friend was vegan (snore) and he had plenty of options here at Tula's. He chose the vegan Reuben sandwich and I went with the vegetarian moussaka. I didn't try his sandwich; he said it was "ok" but not what he expected and that it was kind of disappointing. But I attribute that to user error because I probably wouldn't have ordered a Reuben sandwich for dinner when there were so many other more exciting options on the menu. My mouth was watering over something called "Dragon Love" that I thought he was going to order so when said to the waitress, "I'll have the Reuben" I was disappointed that I wouldn't be trying a bite of the intriguing Dragon Love. The first of many let downs that night (but after we left Tula's) ;) On the other hand my moussaka was out of this world and so filling I only finished about 1/3 of it. The sauce was amazing and everything about it was just fantastic. It rivaled a meat moussaka at a Greek restaurant. What a shame I forgot the doggy bag in his fridge, I was looking forward to a nice midnight snack and lunch the next day -- that's how big the portion was, I could've gotten 3 meals out of it. Well I could have -- maybe not a large, hungry, full-sized man LOL. We didn't order dessert, I was too stuffed. Maybe (no, definitely) next time. I've have been to Tula Kitchen ~4 times over the years and always LOVE the food, however I felt kinda let down this time. While the food was still good, I felt my meal wasn't nearly worth the $ I paid. I ordered the Shrimp Quinoa with asparagus and mushrooms. It had a garlic wine sauce and topped with parm cheese. It was really outta balance; heavy on the quinoa and skimpy on veggies and shrimp. The few shrimp and mushrooms were nicely cooked and quite tasty. The wine sauce however was not impressive and tasted like something you'd make at home. The $26 entree was one of the pricier options on the menu and certainly not something I'd get again. My co-worker had the veggie moustaka and loved it. I tried some and it was delicious. I also noticed the draft beer options to be way over priced. $ 9-10 for beers that are easily available at the store. Normally prices that high are only for the more hard-to-find brews. read more

We had dinner here a few weeks ago. We (party of 2) did not have a reservation but they accommodated us. The food was delicious and The service was great (attentive, knowledgeable and friendly). Came here for dessert after the Long Island Wing Festival. We were initially concerned (3 people), that they would make us pay a fee for splitting our 2 desserts, but we were assured that this wouldn't be the case. They actually make you pay $5 if you want to split an entree. I really don't like places that do that.... Their desserts came out so quickly that we were a little suspicious, and rightfully so. We ordered the peanut butter chocolate cake - and it was CLEARLY frozen. Like, we had to let it sit for a moment to defrost so that we could eat it. Look, I get that you might need to freeze things, but I shouldn't KNOW that. The texture was also a bit grainy like it had been frozen. FAIL, too bad because the flavour wasn't that bad. As for the "cheesecake" that we also got, again, it was clearly frozen but the flavour was better. I've heard that the food is good, and the plates that came out looked pretty amazing, so I'd be down to try the food here again, provided that it was prepared fresh. read more

I'm still aggravated months and months later, so I will post the note that I sent to management: Hi Lina, I hope all is well with you. I thought it would be best to reach out to you about mine and my family's visit to your restaurant on Saturday, November 2. I had a few concerns that I'd like to bring to your attention. I called to make a reservation for 6 people one week ahead of time. At the time that I made the reservation, I asked for 5:00 pm, as my grandparents would be involved, and we like to have dinner with them as early as possible (we don't like them to drive in the dark). The person who made the reservation for us was a manager at your establishment. I've forgotten her name unfortunately - but it was not you. She told me that the earliest reservation was 5:30 pm. Because this reservation was for a birthday, I requested to put a note on the reservation with preference for the red room. I was told that it was against policy to request the room, and that she wouldn't be adding the note. The entire conversation was very abrasive - downright rude. I have extensive experience in the restaurant industry, as well as with customer service. It was not my imagination. Since I love the food in your restaurant, I decided to let this go. Fast forward to the time of our reservation. The first 2 of my party arrived at 5:00 pm and were scolded by this same manager for being late when the remaining 3 of us arrived at 5:30 pm (the time of our reservation). I found this astonishing since I did indeed prefer 5:00 pm and was told that it was not available. The remaining 3 of us who arrived ON TIME for our reservation were greeted coolly and scolded as well. She actually argued with me at the host stand. It was appalling. This is particularly upsetting because my grandparents are in their 80s - they do not often go out, and deserve the utmost respect when they are about to spend $300+ on a dinner. Let us also keep in mind that it was a special occasion. I am afraid the incredible rudeness of your manager was felt by my entire party - even my aunt who likes to see the best in people and situations. It truly put a damper on the evening. I dine out quite regularly, and must say that I have not been treated like this - ever. Our server was lovely, and the support staff refilling our water was very attentive. The food took an incredibly long time to come out to us - over 50 minutes. This was another concern which may have been overlooked if not for the behavior of your manager. I am very disappointed at how we were treated - I loved your restaurant the first few times I dined there. I raved about it, but remembering my grandparents innocently asking why this manager was so rude is extremely upsetting - so much so that I was compelled to write you this summary. I would strongly encourage you to advise your manager to be respectful of the elderly and also to be kinder to patrons in general. Restaurants are a place where guests are truly entitled to reasonable hospitality and respect. I'm certain that this is something that you at least understand. This is my favorite restaurant. Not only is the food unbelievable, but there are SO many options. I can never decide if I want to just split a ton of appetizers and share, or get an amazing entree! The wines are organic and DELICIOUS. Awesome vibe. Back room super gothic and chic and front room, light and open. It is always busy and they work hard. We showed up late to a reservation the other day, and felt very bad for messing up their schedule but they accommodated beautifully. I've been there a few times and have gotten something every time.. and i would applaud it all! Any sharers are great.. brussel tacos and the bruschetta pizza (gf). Well let's start off will YUM. Ellen, sat and assisted us. She gave me a bit of the history about the place and after ordering; I also spoke with one of the two owners, Lina. They have been there for 13 years as of this April. They started with the back room as a place for meals, breakfast, lunch and dinner at different times. What used to be a deli next door was then incorporated into an extension room to their restaurant. Interestingly enough the back walls are garage doors which they open to outdoor seating in the warmer weather. As for decor, Jackie and Lina brought in all kinds of antiques. Now here is the thing, they are all of different backgrounds, Buddha's, French clocks, Spanish ladies, and wonderful old curios and tables from China. There are many forms of candelabras and the ceiling lights were ordered from a craftier who made them from London. The thing about it, once you take it all in, interestingly enough it all works together to create a very unique atmosphere. Seems they had planned to have it dinners for the weekend crowd but they got so many special events that the weekends are for private parties. Definitely a great place for a Bridal shower. That said, now to the food and drink.The coffee, which was quite good, was brought in an unusual decanter, with a plate of fine sugar and a small pitcher of fresh cold milk. The pancakes were truly light and fluffy, topped with real strawberries and with Real Maple Syrup, as were the organic scrambled eggs. Turkey bacon was crisp. Too full for the dessert, their menu which includes vegan, appeared to have a decent selection to choose from. Once again we wondered into this place and I was really pleased we did. 3.5 stars for my favorite vegan spot...here's why!!! Tula's is a great location with parking available on the street or in the back. It's so cute and interestingly decorated. During nice weather, they will open the garage door style wall and have outdoor seating. Very cute ambiance! The menu does not have any red meat, so skip this spot if you have steak craving. But their menu includes lentil burgers, marinated chicken and perfectly cooked salmon. I really enjoy the hummus and baba ganoush. So flavorful and the pita bread is so soft and fresh. My salmon came with cauliflower mash...so smooth and creamy! Do not skip the cocktails! Great mixology going on here! My favorite is the French Pear Martini, which has St. Germain and splash of champagne. Unfortunately, I had to take away some stars because of the slow service. Wait staff was very nice and accommodating, but everything moved at a glacial pace. Be prepared for a long long wait between drinks, between courses and for clearing dishes. We even had a long wait for water refills. And it was NOT just an off day. I been here several times and it is clear their system can not keep up. Tula Tula , where do I begin this place is a gluten free , vegans dream. BUT the best part about it is I can bring my entire family here because they have fish and check on the menu also. The options are so hard to choose from, they all just sound so so good. I have been here about 3 or four times and have always tried different things and have never been disappointed! But I am never on Long Island so I cant make this place a weekly thing. I finally came back with a whole group of my family a few weeks ago...although we had to wait in the parking lot for it to open on Saturday ...kinda weird they don't have lunch hours but what ever. The service is what really puts this place over the top, let be honest I am the pain in the ass person who asks to make a ton of substitutions and really tailor my meal to what I want given my allergies and strange tastes, waiters and waitresses often cant stand me and wont do what I ask. But our waitress didn't even bat an eye at my requests she made everything happen and then some . So VERY ACCOMMODATING is a phrase I would use to describe them. One of my favorite spots around ! I'm always here for lunch with my girlfriends, mom or husband. The lunch menu is extensive and has some amazing items like the Asian noodle salad, the Tula Cobb salad, the Tula turkey or the grilled chicken sandwich. They always have soup specials which are delicious and the food is always fresh and consistent. Only complaint is that sometimes the mixed drinks are often served in wine glasses and have the wrong proportions of alcohol to mixer in them. I don't mind a weak drink but I do mind spending $12 on one ounce of vodka to 8oz of lemonade to fill a wine glass. But I usually get wine for this reason and the wine selection is great ! We called for take out on out way to the concert. I ordered vegan lentil burger. My husband went inside and I went to the farmers market couple blocks down the street. First of all, my husband got terrible treatment! The costumer service was very bad and the workers were extremely rude! Second of all, the food, even though it looked amazing, was called as stone! It's definitely a favorite and I'm both happy and sad I don't live in Bay Shore because if I did I would be here all. the. time. Constantly. The menu is extensive enough that repeat visits won't get boring, but I've heard more than one person say they have such standout favorites on the menu that they have great difficulty not ordering the same thing every single time. This is also one of the few places I can take vegans, vegetarians, pescatarians, gluten free friends, and meat eaters all together and everyone will enjoy their dinner, drinks, and the ambiance. And the service! We've never had anything but stellar food and service here. Tula is the whole package, and that's why it's so great. This visit we went on a Saturday night for a friend's birthday and, as expected, it was hoppin'! But we had reservations and were seated immediately. We ordered a round of drinks and pondered the menu. We got the brussels tacos and vegan crab cakes to share to start. My husband is allergic to shellfish and if he sees a vegan alternative on the menu, he goes for it. Hence the crab cakes, which he loved. The brussels dish is huge and delicious with a generous helping of perfectly roasted brussels sprouts, salsa, cream, cortija, pickled veggies, and romaine leaves standing in for the tortillas. It sounds like an odd concept but I assure you it's delicious and a worthwhile starter to consider. For my main I had a hard time not ordering the sesame crusted tofu, which I'd had last time and loved so so much, but I went with the seafood regati and was not disappointed. The pasta was perfectly al dente, the seafood was cooked perfectly, and the broth had just the right amount of garlic. Other mains ordered by my dining companions included The French Peasant (an amazing cauliflower steak), The Bowl Roast (roasted veggies and chicken over purple rice), and the Sesame Crusted Tuna ('nuff said). Everyone was very happy with their choice. For dessert we got both the vegan chocolate cupcake and the chocolate cake so we could compare the two. From past experience we knew the vegan cupcake was like crack and not to be missed. The non-vegan chocolate cake was also really delicious, and the portion is larger. Flavor-wise they are really similar, so either way you won't be disappointed. We left with happy bellies and already planning our next visit. Hot tips: - Make a reservation. It's a popular place. If you don't reserve a table, do expect to wait, but the wait will be worth it. - Come a little early. I was able to have my first experience with Tula Kitchen last night, and even with Covid it was a wonderful night. All of the tables are spaced out, every worker is wearing a mask, and you need to wear a mask while walking around. The food is delicious, we had the Brussels Tacos to split, and to be honest that was filling by itself. I had the Seafood Rigati & my husband had the Korean Burger, both were delicious. The atmosphere, the welcoming and friendly staff, the care that is put into their food. I can't even recommend a single item because everything is out of this world delicious. Great place if you're a vegetarian or like eating healthy. They have a wide selection of dishes from shish kabobs to miso pasta to eggplant. Don't expect burgers and fries here or any fried food. I wasn't a huge fan of the food. We got the Mexican pizza which was a good appetizer but a little too much vegetables in it. (i'm not a big vegetable fan.) I ordered the miso shrimp pasta. Tula Kitchen was wonderful. I made reservations for my anniversary and they took excellent care of us while we were there! Physically, The place is almost like two different restaurants. The whole place was decorated for Halloween and the decorations were also great! The Food? Damn it was good. The menu is quite eclectic, with a number of vegetarian and vegan options, as well as a bunch of stuff for a rabid carnivore like myself. We had some Bree to start, while I had some incredible almond chicken and my wife had a lentil bowl. We both agreed that the mains were excellent, and a wonderful bread came with the bree, that I wished we could have gotten a loaf of to take with us, but I didn't think they'd give us one :-p. When I called, the guy indicated that parking might be a bit of a problem and I'm sure if I looked for a 'free' spot it would have been rough, but there's a municipal lot just around the block which worked out perfectly. Tula Kitchen, the excellent place to go for authentic food, culture and experience. My father lives just outside Bay Shore and dines at Tula on a regular basis. I was in town for the weekend and was excited to finally pay a visit to the place he's been raving about. I'm always excited to test the waters and see what interesting cuisines I can create with healthy and trendy foods. My boyfriend and I had the falafel to start and split the sesame crusted tuna and seafood rigoti for our meals. I was a little disappointed with the falafel but again, it's baked. Healthy eats come at a price and unfortunately isn't not always all that fun. Now for the main course. I almost always get seared tuna; it's easily one of my absolute favorites. This did not disappoint and the potatoes tasted even more creamy and delicious with every bite, especially with the asparagus. What I was most fond of and sincerely surprised was the seafood rigati! This dish is served with shrimp, little neck clams and mussels in a garlic parmesan wine sauce with the option of gluten free pasta. The sauce was absolutely divine. I was not quite sure what I was expecting (as this was my boyfriend's entrée choice) but I do remember I was everything was tender and filled with flavor. The atmosphere of this establishment is intimate and dark. We noticed they also have a dual side of the restaurant, much brighter, for bar area where they will soon be offering brunch. If you're into seafood, healthy eats or trying something new and exciting -this is an overall enjoyable experience. So my wife has become (6 months) 85% vegan (she still eats fish every now and then). I have a really hard time going out to dinner with her now as most restaurants are not very veggie friendly (without slopping mass amounts of cheese, oil, etc.). We decided to order a bunch of appetizers Bruschetta Pizza, Mussels, Brussel sprout tacos, Warm Kale salad and tofu crab cakes. I only ate the pizza, mussels and the sprouts. All were freaking amazing! There was one slice of pizza left and I took it home and had it for breakfast. It was insanely good! The mussels were meaty and delicious and tasted better then a french brasserie. My wife and our friend said the kale salad was amazing - the tofu crab cake was tofu so can it really taste good :) Dinner I had the shrimp pasta with a feta cheese sauce....WOW took that home too and had it for dinner the next night. If you bring leftovers home and can have them for two meals the restaurant was a solid place. I will be back for sure - the only issue is, it's about a 25 min drive which is kinda annoying. Let us pick our seats, each room has a very different vibe. Retro meets vintage Victorian with velour. Very interesting decor. With out door seating available.
