This place is very welcoming, clean, and with great service. The staff always checked on us regardless how busy they might be, and they were so polite the whole night. Love the complimentary appetizer received. The Samosas was great but they sprinkled a very strong salty seasoning on top of it that I didn't like and wish it wasn't on there. Their Lassi were great! Both Butter Chicken and Mango Curry was great! Naan was great as-well but didn't like the rice that much. Parking is street parking so keep that in mind. Would definitely be returning! read more

I got very excited when I saw the reviews. Went here expecting an amazing experience and didn't mind the expense. I ordered chicken korma, my friend had the tikka masala and my other friend had the veg cauliflower dish. All of our food was very .... basic. I eat a lot of Indian food (it's my favorite cuisine). When done properly, the flavor is unbeatable. It's comforting like being hugged. My dish tasted like the sauce was made an hour ago and thrown on plain chicken. Didn't taste like it had been cooking in the sauce for hours like what I'm used to. Just dry, plain chicken. My actual sauce was good, just good. Even the tikka sauce (usually impossible to mess up) was just okay. We ordered mango pudding and gulab jamun as well which was outstanding and nearly saved the meal. Overall, I wouldn't go back. I'd just go to Lejha for the same expense and better service and flavor. Kind of disappointed in the Indian food scene in Richmond. The options were limitless in Florida, and here it seems to be just two competent places. Wow this place was so good. We picked it on a whim and got the last table without a reservation. It was so so good from start to finish. I love that you can pick a protein and a curry to go with it. Made a phone call @5:30 to make a reservation for 8pm on a Friday and it was no problem at all got right in. We get there and it's so beautiful inside, then we get to our cute booth that's set up so nicely with glass wear, candles, flowers. We saw the menu and LOVED it, it's simple and arrangeable which I really appreciate. I got the chicken Korma (creamy, nutty, inviting) and my partner got the lamb karahi (served more dry, hearty, kick of spice) , we shared the aloo kulcha (mashed potato in naan.) Everything was delicious and I was so happy with our decision to go here. Plus I think the rice is made to order because it was extremely fresh and light. They also had the best cider I've ever had!! We decided to get dinner for takeout and bring it back to our Airbnb and were SO GLAD we chose Tulsi. Loved the meal. We ordered everything mild. They did that well. Ordered a samosa appetizer. It was wonderful. Two to an order so we each had one. For our meals we got a chicken masala and a lamb curry. With plenty left over. The meal came with basmati rice. Every bite was delicious. Service was pleasant and there for whatever we needed without being intrusive. We finished our meal with lassie's for dessert perfectly made. We also ordered rose lassi for each. Wonderful drink. Stopped by during a day trip to Richmond. The restaurant is up-scale and has booths lining the beautifully large windows on the front of the building. We got the Butter Chicken (mild spice), 2 orders of Garlic Naan, Lentil Soup and a cucumber salad. The Butter Chicken was very good -- both the sauce/spices and the quality of the chicken (think Chicken breast strips). It was also a great respite from the cold outside to have a hot lentil soup. Some of the best Indian i've had. The samosas are crisp and flakey on the outside and full of flavor on the inside. The spice was perfect! We got the butter chicken and Malai Kofta. Hopefully if you've been to an Indian spot you've had butter chicken so I won't bother explaining it, just know it was great. The Kofta was like nothing I'd had before. Cooked in masala sauce it's similar to the butter chicken in taste but the texture was completely different. Imagine crisp dumplings in masala sauce and that will begin to describe the experience. Cut open the crisp outside to reveal nuts and lentils and a hidden spice. I usually go for American hot but to each their own. Side note: get the garlic naan just because why go plain when you can add some flare? For reference there were four of us, we ordered two entrees, bread, and an appetizer and we each paid around 12-13 dollars. Great food, great price! read more

This is a five star experience based on their covid precautions, friendly service, vegetarian options, and freshly prepared authentic cuisine. I cannot say enough positive things about this restaurant they have a full bar and stay open until 10pm. Butter chicken was great, but I would not personally recommend the korma (it was that light yellow recipe, rather than an orangish style). "Medium" was not at all spicy, so order at least one level up. They did provide hot sauce, which was ok but not wowing. People were pleasant, water was refilled regularly. read more

Walked in and barely got a smile or a "hello" from the hostess. I believe our server was one of the owners. Told her it was our first time here, she did not even bother to explain the menu and left saying "I'll come back". ordered curry vegetables that was watered down and tasteless, vegetables had no seasoning. While we sitting down, there was a ROACH running across, eating of the food on the floor. I'm addicted to tulsi. I usually eat here at least once a week. I love the vegetable appetizer for two, lamb vindaloo, chicken masala, chicken korma, matar paneer, palak paneer, aloo baingan, garlic naan and their pistachio ice cream (it is not homemade). I wish they were open earlier. I usually get food to go to eat at work. This good keeps very well and tastes delicious even three days after buying. Oh my gosh, I adored this restaurant when it was royal Indian in Charlottesville. I have been dying to come and visit with me and my daughter ever since they closed. I was finally in Richmond and able to go for dinner the other night. It was exactly how I remembered it. The very best garlic naan and chicken Sarson in the world. I'm sad we didn't get to see the owners but we left a message with our sweet waitress. I hope they got it and remembered who we were. I can't wait to go back! It was amazing. We tried to get a table without reservations the week after Christmas, but were not able to, but when we walked in the door and caught the wonderful scent of the food we knew we had to come back. As expected, the food is superb. The menu is diverse and made ordering a challenge because it all looked great. Definitely will be back. The beverage list is great. What we ordered was excellent, and the presentation was great. Excellent food options for vegetarians. They include local ingredients like Brussels sprouts, asparagus etc. as part of Indian traditional dishes. We ordered vegetarian Konkani gravy, vegetarian roganjosh, veg kadai and paneer tikka masala. For bread, we ordered garlic chili naan, garlic naan and plain naan. We were so disappointed with our take-out order from Tulsi. We usually order from Lemon, but it was 4:30 and we didn't want to wait for Lemon to open at 5:00. We ordered butter chicken, hot. It was medium hot at most. The naan was too moist and and almost a mushy consistency, not like any naan I've eaten. The worst was my meal. I ordered seafood curry; the description of the entree included the phrase "a fine blend of tomato and onion gravy." I assumed a tomato gravy was a red curry, but the dish was green in color, and the taste was bland, with absolutely no depth of flavor anyone expects in a classic curry dish. I ordered scallops and shrimp and I got salmon and shrimp. The salmon had a too-fishy taste, and the shrimp were over cooked. We will not be returning to this place. read more

I live two blocks from Tulsi and since they opened, my backyard has continuously smelled of delicious food. I finally checked this place out a few weeks ago. It was a Friday night so I made reservations. There weals a smalll wait but we were quickly sat. The restaurant is niclay decorated and I hardly remembered that it used to be Yapple. Our leisurely meal took no more than 45 minutes from start to finish, as the staff were very efficient. Got some Indian beer, the chili garlic naan, aloo gobi and malai kofta. The beer was good, there's a decent selection, and the naan was spicy enough to make my tongue burn. The malai kofta, which I've never had, was good and I loved the sauce. Although the flavor of the aloo gobi was good, I only wished that it was more saucy. Overall I really liked this place and will be back. read more

It's 9:30am the next morning and I'm still full off of last night's delicious dinner at Tulsi! I chose Tulsi as the perfect place to end the year with my intern and photographer. We wanted to try somewhere new. Two of us love Indian food and the third had never had it before, but was game for the culinary adventure. They had a cute "reserved" sign on our booth and they were just as attentive to detail throughout the rest of the meal. All of us left super pleased! We started with cheese naan and samosas, both of which came out swiftly and super hot. I thoroughly enjoyed both of these dishes. The cheese naan especially stood out as a winner. And, what could possibly be better than a fried pastry stuffed with mashed potatoes? Nothing. That's what. For my entree, I got the basic tikka masala with shrimp. It certainly was delicious, but not the best rendition I've ever had. I ordered the cucumber salad to go with it and that was bananas! I can't wait to eat the rest for lunch today. I went there for lunch and you get a lot! For 9 to 12 dollars.! You get your entree a soup or salad some naan and rice ! It also says a dessert but I had to leave and wasn't offered that. So I take some points off for that. Medium is not spicy whatsoever. So if you want more heat you'll have to ask for more! Everyone I was with loved their food! The malai koftas are so good! Try them! The food here is good, but I wouldn't say it's the best Indian food in Richmond. I had the vegetable korma which was tasty, but thinner in consistency than I expected. It would have been nice to have a thicker sauce to mix with the rice. There were also a LOT of peas in there. I feel like peas should be a compliment to the dish and not the bulk of it. The addition of brussel sprouts was also a little strange. Overall it was decent, but I wasn't blown away. I also expected the portions to be bigger! My friend came here on a Saturday night and although the restaurant was very busy, the servers were attentive and friendly. This is my go to place for dinner. It has consistently great food and service and ambiance.

What a wonderful experience! We were seated immediately. A very professional and kind waiter brought us papadam and sauces while we looked at the menu. We ordered everything mild and it was still very flavorful. Everything was brought out quickly, with perfect timing between courses. Our meal began with samosa chaat-- wonderful pastry filled with potato and spices, with chicken peas, onions and a wonderful sauce on top. The mango chicken was fabulous--just the right mixture of sweet , spicy flavor layers with a hint of tangy flavor underlying the other taste sensations. They were willing to make this with dark meat chicken by our request. The naan was cooked to perfection with plenty of ghee and herbs. The basmati rice was steaming hot and fluffy as a wonderful foundation for our dishes. Butter chicken was creamy and flavorful and the muttar paneer was also creamy and perfectly spiced. The mango lahssi had just the right amount of sweetness to be very pleasing and simultaneously refreshing. The staff checked in with us throughout the meal and we were impressed with the kind and attentive service provided. We highly recommend Tulsi and will return here many times in the future. I felt the prices were a little higher than average for quality Indian food, but nobody in my crew wanted to be disappointed so we went with it. The taste was okay, I was expecting a little better from the entrees. A little disappointed that the paneer entrees tasted and looked the same. The naan was fresh and well baked. The appetizers in the platter were decent, hard to tell if it was lacking because of take out or if that's standard. I probably wouldn't grab take out from here again, but I would definitely give it another shot at the restaurant. read more
