I felt the prices were a little higher than average for quality Indian food, but nobody in my crew wanted to be disappointed so we went with it. The taste was okay, I was expecting a little better from the entrees. A little disappointed that the paneer entrees tasted and looked the same. The naan was fresh and well baked. The appetizers in the platter were decent, hard to tell if it was lacking because of take out or if that's standard. I guess I'd describe Tulsi as "upscale " Indian. The atmosphere and decor is very modern and sleek. Staff was friendly and particularly attentive and playful with my baby. The location is in the heart of Carytown next to Sweet Frog (which makes for a convenient dessert). Parking is available on the street. The food was delicious! Entrees range in spice from mild to Cobra hot with Indian hot being below cobra. Be careful with the spice level; I ordered hot and my mouth was on fire the entire meal. The chicken vindaloo was very spicy and flavorful. I would have preferred there to be a larger portion of chicken, but otherwise I really enjoyed it. My mom had the chicken korma at medium spicy. She said it was spicy (not accurate IMO). It, too, needed more chicken but was very creamy and well flavored. We also had garlic naan. It wasn't very fluffy but did have a copious amount of garlic flavor. Overall, we enjoyed our meals and would recommend Tulsi to those craving Indian in Richmond. read more

Good service, good food, nice ambiance ... Nice understated decor and attentive waitstaff. We ordered various Tandoori, Marsala and Vindaloo dishes and all were good to very good. What a wonderful experience! We were seated immediately. A very professional and kind waiter brought us papadam and sauces while we looked at the menu. We ordered everything mild and it was still very flavorful. Everything was brought out quickly, with perfect timing between courses. Our meal began with samosa chaat-- wonderful pastry filled with potato and spices, with chicken peas, onions and a wonderful sauce on top. The mango chicken was fabulous--just the right mixture of sweet , spicy flavor layers with a hint of tangy flavor underlying the other taste sensations. They were willing to make this with dark meat chicken by our request. The naan was cooked to perfection with plenty of ghee and herbs. The basmati rice was steaming hot and fluffy as a wonderful foundation for our dishes. Butter chicken was creamy and flavorful and the muttar paneer was also creamy and perfectly spiced. The mango lahssi had just the right amount of sweetness to be very pleasing and simultaneously refreshing. The staff checked in with us throughout the meal and we were impressed with the kind and attentive service provided. We highly recommend Tulsi and will return here many times in the future. Wow... absolutely delicious! I got the butter chicken and it's easily the best I've had. You've got to eat it with rice so you can soak up the flavor. Parking can be difficult because it's mostly street parking with a parking lot across the street. The restaurant is not incredibly casual. It's a good second option if Lemon isn't do-able. read more

Quite probably the best Indian food I have ever had in a restaurant. Everything was fresh and delicious. I had the goat in curry sauce and I had it hot. If you cannot handle 3-alarm fire hot, then please select mild. I had a mango lassi nearby to sooth my tongue and palate. Or you can ask for a raita. Both are dairy and will counter the spice. My husband had the lamb in the sarson sauce, which was absolutely delicious. We started with the cucumber salad and the vegetarian assortment, both of which we shared. I had the mango lassi and he had the salty mint drink. Service was excellent. Staff were more than gracious in sharing info about different plates. We went today for lunch, but there are many more sauce options for the meat dishes if you go for dinner. The website provides full lunch and dinner menus. I feel I must add to this review after reading one reviewer's comment on the goat. My dish of goat had a few bones but did not lack meaty pieces. And the meat was tender and delicious. If you get the meat of a baby goat, there will be bones. When I buy goat meat that is not from a baby, there is more meat than bones but it is not as tender. Menu is accessible through qr code though a waiter comes to take your order and we were checked on quite frequently. We were given papadum with a trio of sauces as an appetizer, I think they do this for everyone? There was a sweet tamarind sauce, spicy mint sauce, and pickled onions. We ordered vegetable samosas, garlic naan, medium chicken rogan josh and medium hot chicken tikka masala. The samosas were good and mildly spicy. Garlic naan was also good, they just serve it as one big circular piece that can be easily split in half. The two curries were both tasty though they used chicken breast and the meat was pretty dry. Also, neither curry was very spicy. I have a decent spice tolerance and was surprised that medium hot spice was barely noticeable. read more

I'll start with first impressions. The decor was nice but not over the top. I kinda missed the frozen yogurt look that was there a while ago. Now it's more classy. We were greeted nicely and warmly by the servers. The service. It was really nice but it took a really long time for us to get water but we didn't mind that too much. The waiter was nice and really talkative. It took us awhile to figure out what we want but the server was more than accommodating. The food. For the food I was expecting bigger portions especially for the curry but I normally get this amount of food at any other Indian food place. The food didn't take too long to come out so we were happy about that. The naan was really fresh and yummy too. My friends also got mango and rose lassi but I wish they added ice to it because it got warm too quickly. The only reason I deduct a star is because I wish they gave us more sauce with the curry but they did give us a good amount of meat. I have been a long time fan of Tulsi and even when friends have told me of some not so good experiences I have continued to give them the benefit of the doubt. This time I can not. I arrived with a guest and was able to be seated right away which was good but it was down hill from there. Not only did I witness people being seated after us given water and bread but I actually had to flag down a server to bring us some as well. That was pretty much the sentiment throughout our visit. I usually order the Vindaloo and have always been pleased. This time it was awful. It did not taste anything like what I have eaten there previously. Also the Garlic Naan use to be fluffy and full of flavor, this time it was as if I was eating a tortilla. It was half the size and less flavorful. This was disappointing when I have always looked forward to a great meal there. They also seem to have servers but no waiters/ waitresses. I understand sometimes places can be understaffed but at least have someone come and check on you.
