I rarely leave negative reviews, but our experience at Tulum Mexican Restaurant at Westgate was so disappointing that I feel others should know. My husband went above and beyond to plan a surprise birthday dinner for my 31st birthday. He personally visited the restaurant OVER A WEEK in advance spoke with the manager, and made reservations for a group of nearly 20 people and selected the section for that group size to ensure everything would go smoothly. Unfortunately, from the moment we arrived, everything went wrong. We were seated and waited over 30 minutes without being greeted, offered menus, or even given water despite asking multiple times. The restaurant's air conditioning appeared to not be working, and with temperatures around 110° outside, it was unbearably hot inside. By the time we left, my hair and makeup were ruined from sweating. To make matters worse, while we were sitting there waiting, we received a text stating that our reservation had been canceled. The table we had reserved had been given away to another group. The waitress we repeatedly asked for water was extremely rude, and when we went to the bar ourselves just to get a drink, we still received no assistance. One of the chairs was broken and actually collapsed underneath my husband. When we tried to speak with the manager about everything that was happening, he simply threw his hands up and walked away. There was no apology, no attempt to resolve the situation, and no concern whatsoever for our group. What was especially telling was that even the guests seated near us--who ended up at the table we had reserved--were having service issues and had to get their own water. They were so frustrated that they wanted to walking out along with us, they didn't and I see they also left a bad review. I am so sad for them as well. I understand that things happen. Air conditioning issues, staffing shortages, and busy Saturday nights can be beyond a restaurant's control. What is in their control is how they treat their customers. Not once did anyone acknowledge the situation, communicate with us, apologize, or attempt to make things right. When you have nearly 20 people gathered for a birthday celebration on a Saturday night, you can't simply find another restaurant at the last minute. What should have been a special evening turned into an incredibly frustrating and disappointing experience. The lack of customer service, communication, and basic hospitality was shocking. We left feeling ignored, disrespected, and completely let down. read more

Fun atmosphere, ok crowd for middle of week night. Salmon was over cooked and the Ribeye tacos were fatty. For $29 you got two tacos and they were served only with onions and a very small side of salsa ( like jam size). Severely over priced for no entertainment. It's a little more pricy than other places, but I will say that speaks to the quality of the food and drink. I had the tacos and they were great. Was here Saturday night June 21st. I mention the date because Post Malone was playing at State Farm Stadium next door to Tulum. That being said, this place was crowded but management could have planned better. It's not that Post Malone announced he was performing here the day before. The service was not good because of so many people crammed into this place. It took 35 minutes to get a warm beer and 90 minutes to get our dinner. My Mole Enchiladas were cold when they finally arrived to our table. It was a 2 1/2 hour dinner when we left, but the kicker here is why we left. The fire alarm went on and the staff did absolutely nothing to let the patrons know if there was a fire or not. My first time here about a year ago was 5 stars. First maybe where we went wrong was getting sushi at a Mexican restaurant, but maybe don't offer sushi if you can't make it good. It's just a bad business model. Nice place. The interior is beautiful. Service is crazy fast and attentive. Modern Mexican in that they have some classics while also having sushi on the menu. Asked what their signature dish was and it was a Chicken Mole Enchiladas. The dish is gorgeous. See picture below. But it came out room temperature and the Mole was a mild Mole versus that deep rich complex Mole that I was expecting. The margaritas were pretty good though, and I got a spicy cucumber drink as well which was good. I honestly wouldn't come back here most likely, maybe if they would add live entertainment or something to go with the drinks, but not to eat. We came on a slammed night due to a concert with no reservations and a large party. It was the only place in nearby area where we did not have to wait 2 hours to get seated. So we were happy to be able to get seated. However, they were short handed and service was not pretty much nonexistent. We were a party of 7 and they gave chips and salsa with hardly any chips for the seven of us. The waiter finally came like 20 min later to take our orders. Our party ordered drinks which seem to take another 20 minutes to get. I appreciated the fire dancer as entertainment while we waited on our food. The food and drinks seemed overpriced for the size you got. But it was just enough to feel satisfied. Don't expect leftovers to take home. My chicken tacos were good tasting but not great. The beans on the side were boring and bland. I ordered a soda and got no chance to get a refill. I will say the ambiance is nice and has an exotic island feel to it. Having been to the actual Tulum myself, the ambience didn't match up but it was still a nice place. The plate of tacos and a soda cost me $26 not including tip. Tulum ranks in tip 3 worst restaurants I have ever been to and I have been to 1000s in my lifetime. So first let me say that I do recognize this restaurant is in a location that has high traffic when the nearby entertainment events are occurring. I also recognize that Valentine's Day elevates that. But, when you're a restaurant that makes a choice to be in that location you need staff, managers and experienced oversight that can handle the pressure. These guys completely buckled and make no apologies for it. They simply do not care. The food -1out of 10, the service 2 out of 10, the ambience 2 out of 10 and that was because of the valentines decor only, music was blaring so loud the some inside the Restaurant were visually covering ears, attentiveness of other supporting staff zero --it's a dog eat dog world at this restaurant. And speaking of dog, a few of us left questioning if that's what was served on the plate. I know that's disgusting but the smell and the look had to be something other than beef. We were a party of six, made a reservation for 545, spent 20 minutes, watching them run around, not knowing what to do because they did not have a table ready for us. Once they finally figured it out, it took exactly 1 hour and 18 minutes for them to arrive with one of two appetizers ordered at that point our glasses were completely empty of water. We ordered drinks which at $19 apiece were terrible and suspiciously possibly canned, absolutely terrible guacamole came with what appeared to be beef or pork fried fat inside the guacamole which was brown. There was not any meat on the fat pieces. We literally picked it out and put it on a napkin for display and the waitress looked at it and said absolutely nothing. That did not get finished. We ordered sea salt fries. They came at the very end of the meal, with no sea salt, literally after all of our entrées were served and the bulk of the food pushed away as terrible. 3 of 6 entrees went mostly untouched and the others slightly mor. They can only split the check for a party our size 3 ways. So for two of us, three house margaritas, two entrées and an appetizer was $160 with the ad of gratuity. The food was worth about a dollar. Literally when my entrée came out, it was a cup of cream, poblano peppers a third a cup of fried white rice literally (1" high by 3 inches diameter) and a small cup that they use for ketchup with runny beans. That was $23. But others got $30 tacos that came out littered with fat and little meat, rendering it useless as there's no way it could be ingested and the smell was absolutely horrific. The bill total was probably around $400 for all of us and worth under five. The system that they have created cannot survive, which is strange because they're all wired with little microphones in their ears and for what I don't know. There were no apologies made and our server had it mastered where as soon as she delivered food, she quickly pivoted and turned away and did not wait for any questions. We saw her do it at least two or three times. No regard for the client, this was about survival for servers. We constantly had to ask for water ( 3 refills of very short glasses were begged for) and the smell was terrible. Minuscule portions, fat laden beef tacos, a dinner quesadilla the size of a bread plate and not salt or pepper on the table. No free chips or salsa and for the guacamole we ordered there was not enough chips to even try to eat it. Good thing we gave up on that with the fat pork or beef rinds in it. From the time we got there till the time we left, It was two hours and 5 minutes and all we did was wait. With the appetizers, nobody brought any appetizer plates. We had to ask for utensils, we had to ask for refills on water each time and when they did, they only filled the water halfway. After a few bites, most of us chose not to eat. I'm telling you I don't know how these people are even in business. What an absolute disappointment. Stay away from this restaurant as it is by far the worst I have experienced. Server also added the group gratuity which I get, when it was not earned. She picked up full plates of food when we were done and was wise enough not to ask how it was. read more

It's giving cute decor, good lighting, and really solid cocktails. I had the ribeye and elote--both were actually fire. The steak was perfectly seasoned and came out a juicy medium rare, just how I like it. The ceviche and crackling shrimp? Meh, kinda forgettable tbh. I'd give it like a 7 outta 10 overall. Everyone was super helpful the place is pretty nice decorated.. we had only appetizers to try things out . It' was really good but don't think for the price .. music is ok it changes way to much from one style to another . They don't let you enjoy the music before they are changing it already .. the menu very short and the selection is very small . We went for dinner last night, we had a group of 10 people, the service was really good, and the decorations/ambiance were nice too. I just don't understand the food or the prices of everything on the menu which is why I give it 2 stars. I paid $18 for this sad chicken quesadilla appetizer, only had water, so my total because of gratuity was $24... like what? The drinks are mostly $19+ and all the food was ridiculously priced which sucks because there are very little food choices. Oh if you want a "side" it's $13+. Booked a reservation a month in advance just so they could ruin our valentines dinner. We get to the restaurant early and there is crazy line in front waiting to check into their reservations. We were told they are just behind but we would still get our table. An (hour) later we get our table, we order everything and I ask for the bill because we had a concert to go to and we were running behind due to them not honoring the time I reserved a month ago! Guess what? Another (hour) later and still no food! I don't if they overbooked or were over serving their customers to get more tips, but we had to cancel our steak dinners to make it to the concert in time. Our birthday celebration was extremely disappointing. Our group celebrates birthdays monthly at different restaurants, and this time we were celebrating three birthdays, with a multitude of presents visible, during our first visit here. Ironically, the restaurant had just celebrated its own 3-year anniversary, yet somehow couldn't help us celebrate ours properly. Although the restaurant is attractive, the customer service was poor. We were asked to split into three payment groups instead of receiving individual checks, which was fine but inconvenient, and for three birthday guests, they brought only one tiny two-two bite dessert. When we politely asked for another one for photos since the sparkler went out quickly, the manager came and responded awkwardly, saying he was "good at negotiating" and questioned whether all three birthdays were actually that day!!? For the prices they charge, the experience felt cheap, inconsiderate, and unwelcoming. It's honestly laughable that the restaurant chose to risk its reputation and lose future customers over what amounted to a 50-cent bite of dessert. That's simply not good business. Water refills were also neglected even though the restaurant was nearly empty. A great restaurant is about more than décor - it's about hospitality, human connection and making guests feel valued. Unfortunately, we left with a sour experience and won't be returning. read more

Tulum is located in the Westgate district. It is beautifully decorated and spacious. The menu is not extensive. It was hard for me to pick something to eat. I wanted the Salmon but it came with rice. I asked to substitute the rice for the mash potatoes and was told no because the Salmon comes with rice. That was disappointing! I ordered the chicken tacos and the only topping was onions but I will say the flavor profile was on point. I did suggest that they add a brunch option to the establishment. Stopped in because we were in the area doing some shopping while we were visiting from out of town and wow. This restaurant/bar is amazing. The ambiance was so gorgeous and beautifully done. The service was okay. We really only stopped in for a refreshing beverage because it was so hot outside and we had been shopping at the outlet stores in the 100+ degree weather. We chose this spot last minute to celebrate my friend's birthday and we are so glad we did as we were in town for basketball. The ambiance is nice and the decor is great. The drinks were delicious and so was the seafood. The only disappointment were the fries. They definitely reminded us of frozen fries and they are way too expensive. After not having been able to have a date night in a couple months, we decided to splurge a bit and chose Tulum Modern Mexican after seeing an tik tok about their tomahawk steak...and....wow, what a terrible decision that was. It was a Tuesday night, so the restaurant was fairly empty when we got there. We were greeted and seated quickly. The vibe is nice with the decor and the lighted trees, that's where the good news ends. We ordered the elote starter, which the menu said was 'roasted corn' and let me tell you, that corn was paler than my Swedish grandmother in the dead of winter. It had clearly never been roasted. Moving on to the main, the thing we had come for, the tomahawk steak. When the waitress brought it to the table, she dropped it off like she was dropping off a cheeseburger at a chain restaurant. Nothing like the video I had seen. It was not sliced tableside, just plopped on the table with a dull knife that could probably barely cut a pb&j. We ordered medium rare and it came out very rare. At that point, we were way over this place, so we just proceeded to eat. The flavor of the steak was decent. The Mac and cheese? Don't bother, zero flavor whatsoever. The garlic sautéed mushrooms were, however, delicious and very much the star of the show. This is wild in and of itself considering the price they charge for the tomahawk. After we finished eating, we weren't offered dessert. Just brought our $179 check. There was very little interaction or service from our waitress at all. We stopped in Tulum for drinks prior to the NCAA men's national championship basketball game recently. As you'd expect, it was packed and pretty much utter chaos. We waited quite awhile but finally were seated at a table in the bar area. We just wanted margaritas, without food. The drinks were small and pretty weak, then I had to track down our waiter to get our check. Four small, weak margaritas ended up costing us $100. 3 stars is generous for the experience but it takes into account this being the first night of full service. Out and about in Westgate, our group was seated quickly and greeted at the table with water and tortilla chips with fresh pico de gallo. The restaurant bills itself as "modern Mexican" and the menu reflects some standards (enchiladas in mole sauce, carne asada tacos, conchinita pibil) and some picks that were just...baffling (sushi rolls?) Our group split some appetizers (the aforementioned sushi rolls, guacamole, steak quesadillas, queso fundido, tempura shrimp in a chipotle glaze), and I went with the cochinita de pollo tacos (shredded chicken in an orange + annato marinade). All told: this worked much better in concept than execution. The queso was ordered without chorizo and and came topped with it. When returned, the second dish of queso, served in a mini skillet, came out cold enough that it lifted out in a single scoop. The cochinita de pollo tacos were cold, mushy, and missing the habanero zing expected from cochinita. Staff was friendly and attentive, though, and apologetic of the experience, providing a complimentary dessert (orange infused strawberry shortcake). The geture was appreciated but the dish was average at best. Tulum has potential and should do pretty well given the location. read more
