Never knew this place existed until a friend of mine who lives in the area told me about it. Her being a Thai food enthusiast (same as I) decided to give this place a try. Ona Saturday night, this place was extra dead and when I say dead I mean we were the only other party eating at the restaurant. The interior is nice, quite different from most of the other Thai restaurants I've been to. Being the only other party in the restaurant made the service extra attentive (they really didn't have another option now, did they?) We ordered the curry puffs to start (filled with potato, onion, curry powder and wrapped in puff dough). The puffs were more like rocks. Both my friend and I thought is quite hilarious that our knives couldn't cut through the "puffs" (I wasn't trying to lose a tooth in the process). The filling itself was good, but lacked the curry flavor I was looking for. Next up I ordered the Spicy Basil Paste Entrée with Chicken, accompanied with fresh basil, broccoli, onion, bell pepper and chili paste. Surprisingly, it was good. Portion size was decent and food was filling. I was expecting the entrée to be spicy, since it did have the word "spicy" in the entrée name. No spiciness whatsoever. Would I try this place again? I'm not really sure what's modern about the food here at Modern Taste. It tasted pretty much like run-of-the-mill Chinese takeout to me... We decided to try this place because they claimed to serve Thai food in addition to Chinese cuisine and sushi. We ordered a sushi roll as an appetizer, and two entrees from their Thai menu. When placing our order, I indicated to our waitress that we're both vegetarian. She was kind enough to mention that the Sweet Potato sushi roll was normally topped with eel sauce, and said that she'd tell the cook to omit it. But when the sushi cook brought the dish to our table, the eel sauce had been drizzled on top anyway. We told him rather apologetically that we asked for NO eel sauce because we don't eat fish, and asked him to take it back. He looked pretty miffed, and said that eel sauce contains no eel. For the record, and according to sushiencyclopedia dot com, eel sauce is "a reduction of eel bone broth, soy sauce, rice wine and sugar." The next dish to come out was Thai Tofu and Vegetables. This dish was extremely similar to Szechuan Tofu, which is decidedly not Thai at all. Cubes of soft tofu and lots of veggies swam in a sauce that was speckled with red chili flakes. The sauce was spicy, but flat; I had to add soy sauce to perk it up a bit. The last dish to the table was the Thai Basil Noodles with Vegetables; I asked them to add fried tofu. I expected wide rice noodles, or at least rice noodles. What they brought, instead, was a platter of vegetable Lo Mein. The guy who brought the dish out to us actually CALLED it lo mein as he placed it on the table. I flagged down the girl who took our order to make sure that we received the right dish. She laughed and said, "Yes, I know, it looks like lo mein, right?" Um... yes, and that's because it IS lo mein. As lo mein goes, it was very good - I'll at least give them that. But tossing a few leaves of basil into lo mein does not make Thai Basil Noodles. Service was all over the place, as well. There were no dedicated servers - everyone tended to every table, leading to mass confusion. We watched as the servers repeatedly brought dishes to the wrong tables; I was thoroughly convinced that our leftovers would be mixed up with those of the table behind us. If you're looking for a decent Chinese restaurant with a bit more ambiance than your typical take-out joint, then do stop in here. The food was not bad at all. But please, do yourself a favor and stick to the Chinese menu. There is nothing Thai going on here. read more

This is a nice little mom and pop place that just recently opened. The sushi was really good and fresh. Items in the menu are reasonably priced. I have come to this restaurant a few times and the family that runs this place is really friendly and attentive to their customers. I recommend this place. read more

Disappointing. I ordered the chicken panang curry lunch special for takeout. When I got it home, there was no shrimp shumai, and the salad was plain and no dressing was included. The chicken was rubbery and overcooked. The vegetables were fresh and crisp, however. The curry itself was flavorful, but I ordered it spicy and it was mild, maybe medium at best. I didn't really look at the restaurant much, it seemed clean and pleasant. Parking is an issue, but that's a problem with most of Kenilworth. read more

I want to like this place a lot, but for some reason to me it's missing its authenticity. It tastes more like Chinese food disguised by a Thai menu. When i eat Thai food I expect heat/spice and to me it tasted a bit bland. The curry I ordered about a month ago was actually pretty decent. I went there on the weekend with my family, it was a Sunday afternoon and it was nearly empty, just us and another couple. I was very impressed with the food, I ordered the chicken pad Thai and it was seriously good, the right amount of heat and the portion was a good size, my husband ordered the chicken teriyaki plate and it was very good too , he requested fried rice instead of white and they did it for a small extra charge which I guess its usual at most Asian food restaurant. We also ordered the spring rolls as an appetizer but all the food came together, not a big deal but I would had preferred to get those first to be able to enjoy them more but they were very crispy and tasty, will definitely order again. I've been here a couple times after school for their lunch menu and I always get their beef fried rice and thai iced tea! The food is really good and it comes fast. The only thing is that there's usually only one person working & not a lot of people come. I will say that it does surprise me and make me a little sad that they're not busier, because their food is so great! I've been to many different Thai restaurants thoughout the NJ/NY area and Tum Thai is one of the best! Every single dish I've had has been excellent! Love their Pad Thai and Tom Kha Soup, it's so flavorful and just tried their green curry the other night and it was really delicious! I have never been dissapointed with my meals. The one time I did order the avocado salad and forgot the dressing when I came back they told me that they would have just delivered it to me as they offer delivery, unbeknownst to me! This was our second visit to this restaurant and I failed to put in a review on our first trip. Both trips were takeout orders. Last night we ordered the vegetable dumplings, the chicken pad thai and the shrimp drunken noodles. The 6 steamed vegetable dumplings were a good start to our meal. They were tasty and just enough not to spoil the main course. The chicken pad thai was very tasty with just the right amount of heat (spice) to enjoy. The portion was very generous and it had plenty of chicken. The shrimp drunken noodle was just as good. Plenty of shrimp, the perfect amount of heat, and a generous portion. Leftovers for sure. Many thai restaurants notate that a dish is spicy and then when you eat it there is no heat whatsoever. At Tum Thai, you don't have to worry about that. They know how it works. Our last trip was a couple months back and we had different orders. I recall we had the mango chicken and the pineapple fried rice. I remember it was excellent. I really like this place. This restaurant serves the most tasteless Thai food that I have ever tasted and it simply, a mediocre cooking. We ordered red curry which could easily be confused with tum yum soup. If you have high blood pressure, please refrain yourself from eating their fried tofu. It was salty beyond words. The vegetable fried rice was not bad. The service was OKAY. Tum Thai is a really good Thai restaurant and I always feel satisfied after eating here. I came here because of a Groupon deal and it's worth coming regardless because the food is the real deal compared to other Thai places in state. As of 10/13/17 I'm going to update my review from 5-3 stars. They have significantly downsized their portions. The flavor has been off and as I had mentioned before, they never give soy sauce. I asked again today and they told me it would be $0.25, I've never been to a place where I had to pay extra for soy sauce. Unfortunately its no longer worth the price to me. I order lunch from here, Eggplant and Tofu in basil pesto. Its to die for! All these years I've yet to try anything else because I'm afraid to stray away from how unbelievably tasty I find it. The lunch special comes with white rice, salad and some kind of shrimp dumplings that are also to die for! I highly recommend trying it. I will be a customer for years to come. Only negative is that they don't give soy sauce no matter how many times I've asked and if you order delivery and pay with a credit card they keep it on file which has become messy when other people in my office called to order as well. read more

I've only been here for takeout, but the food is always delicious and neatly packed. Front desk staff has been nice every time I've stopped in to place an order and I've never waited more than 15 min for a 2 meals plus an app. I usually get the Pad Thai lunch special which has great portions and is somehow only $7.50. This was really good, will definitely be my go-to when I'm visiting fam in NJ. The papaya salad and the Pad Thai were very fresh and tasty, not gelatinous or sugary like a lot of 'burby Thai places (hey-like a lot places in NYC). The standouts were the the mango chicken, which was basically very nicely done basil chicken with fresh mango, and the duck curry. I'm not normally a duck person but it was exceptionally soft. Nice place as far as the interior goes. They really live up to their name with a "Modern" look inside. This place has a large menu with great Asian food to choose from. It has 3 sections... Thai, Chinese and Japanese foods. I've been there a few times plus one take out, and have yet to dislike their food. The prices for what they offer are very reasonable. My only problem with Modern Taste are the employees' inexperience at serving. They take too long to come to you once you've been seated. And once you do order, the entrees take forever to come out. All this with a nearly empty restaurant! One time I had to wait about 35 minutes for a Sushi order. While I was waiting, my girlfriend and her son were nearly done with their food! It happened again about a week later, and that time it took nearly 20-25 minutes to get my food, yet everyone else in my party had been eating for at least 10 minutes. On both occasions no one ever came to apologize, or inform me that the food was going to take some time, nor were they ever near by to wave down to ask about the wait on my meal. I think it's a husband and his wife running the place including serving. They need to hire some waiters with experience. Overall the food is great, but don't be surprised if you get waited like me. Ironically, I'm writing this review waiting to go to Modern Taste! Fingers-crossed it doesn't happen again! Haha!!
