I went into Turner's Outdoorsman recently to buy ammunition and had a very disappointing experience. The employee who helped me seemed uninterested in answering any of my questions and came across as rude. When I asked about purchasing ammo, I was told I had to buy a gun in California before I could purchase any ammunition, which is not accurate information under California law. As a customer, I expect staff to be knowledgeable and willing to help, especially when dealing with something as important as firearms and ammunition. Instead, I left feeling dismissed and misinformed. I hope management takes this feedback seriously and improves both customer service and staff training. read more

The staff and the store basically suck. A classic example of "it's corporate policy," mindset. It's pathetic, but most of the folks that work there don't know what they are doing and it shows. The answer to everything is "no." What's more is the holder of a Type I FFL, is REQUIRED BY THE STATE to do private party transfers. They refused to do mine... why? "It is corporate policy!" What the real answer is is the fact that the cost to do private party transfers is capped and they find it not worth their time to do them. In general, their products are stupidly overpriced. More often than not, when they put something on sale, they have very limited inventory that quickly sells out and they do not restock the item. Why...? They want to sell you something that is not on sale for more money! Classic bait and switch. Avoid Turners. You are better off finding what you want online. It will be cheaper, you will get better customer service and use a local FFL that is not a shop. All the shops in this area suck (VC Armory especially.) Please don't think I am some negative person just wanting to rip on someone. But, I am a person that is very knowledgeable and experienced with firearms and I don't like when service providers just want to make a dime and forget about the service part. This is not a review on Turner's everywhere. This is specifically for the one in Oxnard and it's only for the one department I went to. I can't speak about the whole store or all the employees but for the Bow & Arrow department, I spoke with Oscar and that dude knows his stuff. I traveled 1hr and 20mins because I was told he knows his and they were right. I left with a recurve now, arrows and everything else I needed to do archery on my own as a beginner. We got the right Bow for my height and arm length. He also explained to me what were some of the traps with ordering from Amazon. It made sense. As for Value, it's hard to know because it's so expensive like any sport. The start up is pricey and as you start to get into upgrading.... . If you're looking for a friendly, welcoming gun store experience, Turner's in Oxnard is NOT the place. From the moment I walked in, it felt like I was an inconvenience rather than a customer. The staff either hates their job or has some serious issues with customer service--especially when it comes to Latino customers like myself. The vibes were off, to say the least. I went in to pick up some items for my training, and I couldn't get out of there fast enough. The attitude, lack of helpfulness, and overall disdain was palpable. It's almost like they'd rather be anywhere else than assisting their paying customers. Or maybe they just have a chip on their shoulder. Either way, I'll be taking my business online or heading to a different county from now on. Called turners today at 2pm on a Wednesday and they were too busy to take a call... after 20 minutes I called back and asked the clerk who answered what would be a better time to call, and he said, "Right now would be good"...and put me through to the gun counter. 15 minutes of repeat ads adnausium for another 15 minutes....i called the front counter to again ask my original question of a better time to call....and the clerk hung up on me. Bought several guns from Turner's. Just a few months ago was my last purchase. So I'm not new to the establishment. The manager Aaron helped me set up my purchase and he's awesome. Today I got Jose C. and he's lethargic. Took him forever to get around to helping me. I just went in in verify the serial number and fill out the paperwork for my new purchase. I got there at 12:40 patiently waited my turn. Excited for my new purchase. By the time I started filling out the paperwork it was 13:15. And not because the store was busy. When I got the form to verify the serial number, Jose wanted me to sign it before he would show me the purchase. I explained to him that I needed to verify the serial number on the purchase with the serial number on the paper, he said okay but never let me see the purchase. I reluctantly signed the paper without seeing the serial number, which is stupid, and then He finally let me see my purchase. Then I had to get the paperwork back from him so I could verify the serial number on the purchase to the serial number on the paper. By this time I was no longer in a good mood and it was approaching 13:30. I had to be to work by 14:00. Then after all of that he comes back out and tells me that retired military ID is not sufficient for picking up the weapon and that I was going to have to take the FSC test which I took a few years prior when I bought my first gun there. Not to mention I just bought a gun there in September of this year. Not sure what their deal is but apparently I now have to come back and retake the FSC test. When I finally left there around 13:45 I was a little irritable to say the least. read more

Found myself in dire need of ammo today - 12May2020 - both for home/personal defense and range/training, so I call Turners early morning to see of I can purchase ammo (ammo that I had to put on 'layaway' on 30Apr when I went to purchase a firearm) and because I saw their IG post saying to call the stores for info regarding purchases. So I call at 9:15 am, female picks up and tells me they're clear to sell ammo. I switch plans up to make it for a same day 10:30 am appt. I arrive and I'm told no sales are taking place. They blame the pandemic and advise me to seek ammo via Camarillo Gun Store, lol. I turn to Shooters Paradise, and they rise to the occasion like a champ and sold me 1000 factory new 9mm rounds for $190 and 3 boxes of 150 grain Federal HST's for roughly $22/box without even flinching! Turners, please pthem two boxes of Hornady Critical Defense back on your shelf. As soon as you call me to pick up my M&P Shield, I'll be out your hair! I went to Turner's in Oxnard to get hollow point and snake shot ammo for my Colt 45 ACP pistol. I brought the gun with me to show them what I was using the ammo for. They sold me the ammo, but when I got home I found that the front of the bullets would get stuck in the ramp before loading into the firing chamber. I went back to Turner's to return the ammo, but they refused to take them back. The manager admitted that hollow points might not load in an ACP and suggested I have the gun modified to they don't get stuck. He said the reason they won't take back ammo is because bullet reloading is so good these days that they couldn't be sure I hadn't already used the shells and reloaded them. Conclusion: If Turner's in Oxnard will sell you ammo they know will not work in your weapon, why should anyone trust them or shop there? I wish I could give them a ZERO for their dishonesty and lousy customer service, and I won't go back there again! read more

Overpriced, particularly for anything worth having. Last time I spoke to them they said that they do not handle private party transfers, even though I did one with them a while back. The fact is, I believe, that FFLs must facilitate private party transfers. They just don't want to do them because they only make $10. on them. There's no line to get in which is a plus. For the firearm section depending on how busy it is, you might need to grab a number. I haven't bought a firearm from them, but I've bought ammo. There's a good selection of eyes and ears for the range, rifle bags, some safes, targets, and other accessories. Haven't looked at the fishing gear or archery gear. RUN!!!! RUN!!! This store is as BAD AS IT GETS! I am a female who came in to sell a gun. I know my guns, I was engaged to a Sherrif, and I am friends with a few police officers. I have shot all different kinds of guns safely. I entered with my gun in a proper carrier UNLOADED with the bullets in a separate area inside the case. The man then YELLED "THIS GUN IS LOADED" TWO times!!! What an A-hole (that's the nice word). Many people turned to look to see what on earth was going on. Since this employee does not know a loaded gun from an unloaded gun he should NOT be working there. He told me I HAD to take the bullets and put them in my car. He wanted to keep my gun while I did this. I will not leave my gun with anyone. (He didn't like that). I took my case to the car as asked and placed the bullets in the glove box. I returned for an estimate. He low-balled me BIG TIME....why? I am guessing 2 reasons...1. he doesn't know his stuff, or 2. I am a female. When I took this same gun to Camarillo Gun Store, (recommended) they were perfectly normal, did not yell, and more importantly they know the difference between a loaded gun and an unloaded gun. As a disclaimer I was pretty hungry for an archery range in Oxnard. I also don't shoot guns or fish. I am an archer. I got to know this place by needed arrow services. I called a couple places in Oxnard, and they referred me to Turner's. If other stores are referring you, that's one strong signal of a great place. My experience with their staff was all positive. Everyone I talked to in the archery department was kind, friendly, and knowledgable. The range is there and at 20yards and you get to do your thing. I don't just see myself coming here to shoot a lot, I'm planning for it. read more

I wasn't aware until tonight that we had a gun store here in the Walmart shopping center! Pretty convenient. Anyway I browsed the guns but they were calling out numbers (because so many customers wanted help compared to employees) so I didn't bother trying to get someone in that department to help me. Browsed over in the fishing section and an employee greeted me and offered me assistance quite quickly. I admit he didn't seem entirely familiar with the products (when he asked if he could help me I said I was looking for Sampo swivels and he acted like he'd never heard of that before, even though I found a pack of Sampo brand swivels right in front of me), but he tried to help and gave me some tips as to other stores in the area I could check when they didn't have the size of swivel I was looking for. The taxidermy birds that decorate the store are nothing special and some look old. If they had looked amazing I would have asked who they had do them in case it was someone local I could use. No luck though. The taxidermy fish looked nice, but I couldn't tell if they were real or plastic. The mammals looked nice. I asked the fishing guy if they sold reloading equipment (since, as I said, the gun guys were all super busy) and he said that he... thought so... so I have no idea if they do or not, but maybe not... Anyway, their prices on guns looked fair and I referred my husband to check them out in case they can get stuff that other suppliers in the area have trouble getting. There's not many options for purchasing firearms in Ventura County, so I really appreciate that this store is located in nearby Oxnard. Others have commented on the long lines to make a purchase. It's often true, but I think it has to do with limited competition in the area as well as the time each customer needs to receive good service from the staff. I was helped by 2 people here, and they both were amazing. I felt very welcomed here and was treated very well. I have had a great experience with Turner's Torrance store. But the Oxnard store has some serious customer service issues: 1. I had to call no less than 6 times before I could speak with the gun department. 2. When I finally spoke with the store manager (Steve) - he hung up on me. 3. When I called back, Steve said that he was busy with another customer? Steve than mentioned that he was over worked and did not have enough employees?????????????? Why why why the fuck did I go back to this hellish store. Oh yeah the local gun stores didn't have what I wanted. FUCK. I don't buy firearms everyday so I didn't know this. When a firearm is in a company warehouse and not brick and mortar store the 10 day waiting period doesn't start until they have it. So when I get a call saying it will be 14 total days you bet I was fucking pissed, it would of been nice to be told that when I bought the gun and not two days later. Also when you pick up a firearm make sure you block off 2 hours because the waits are fucking atrocious. The thing that gets me is the fucking sad assholes who have no social life and spend an eternity asking questions because they are too fucking stupid to google information. While waiting for our number to be called I noticed how all of the employees took care of their customers, answering their questions, not rushing them to help someone else... Stopped by here a couple times for ammo and every time I come the service is always good. You have to pick up a number for them to attend you.
