Cooper Creek Campground is absolutely the most beautiful, off the beaten path, places I've ever…read moretraveled and it's practically in Atlanta's back yard! Located on the beautiful and noisy Cooper/Mulky Creek just an hour north of Dahlonega up Hwy 60 and then up some of the most beautiful and winding mountain roads that make you think you're never going to get there! By the time you turn on to Forest Service Rd 236 (a beautiful and peaceful dirt mountain road that climbs up through the pine and hardwood forests), you realize there is something amazing waiting for you. And there is. Cooper Creek Campground is like reaching a little slice of heaven. Fifteen campsites scatter through out the lush forest, and five of them sit right on the banks of Cooper/Mulky Creek. I advise getting there early during the week so you can get a creek side spot ... there is nothing like it! The creek is rocky and noisy and if you fish, the trout are plentiful! I walked the loop and all of the campsites were beautiful and within easy walking distance to the creek. As a solo hiker and camper, I chose spot #1 for the way the creek opened up and the trees opened up around my tent site to give me a clear view of a beautiful moon. I also liked the quiet solitude of this site ... few cars passed here since it's on the back loop. The campground hosts also live two spots up. As an avid (delirious almost) rock stacker, I fell in love with this creek. The rocks are amazing and perfect for stacking and balancing. It was so relaxing I stacked till after dark and was up just after sunrise stacking again! The pine cones in camp are plentiful, so I got a good pine smoke going and didn't have the first mosquito or black fly. I'm telling you ... this place is heaven! After dark a bunch of deer came through my camp and lapped at the creek for almost a half hour. Two fawns frolicked in the fern thickets next to my tent for a while and were bouncing around like puppies! With the light of the moon, I felt like I had a front row seat for natures big show that night! Also, there are synchronous fireflies here, which surprised me. Just after dark during the Summer Solstice, I thought it was kids playing with flashlights, but it was fireflies, all blinking in unison! It was amazing! I can't WAIT to go back! In fact, now that I'm home, I'm missing it. Cooper Creek is open year round and keep their gates open 24 hours a day. You won't get a phone signal here, so you may as well turn it off ... the solitude is amazing! Each site has a tent pad, grills, lantern pole and a picnic table. There are also bear bins that are an easy walk from each site for discarding trash. For hikers, you won't be disappointed. There are five interconnected trails that start in or near the camping area (Yellow Mountain Trail- 3.2 miles, Connector Trail- 0.4 miles, Mill Shoals Trail- 0.9 miles, Shope Gap Trail- 0.6 miles, and Cooper Creek Trail- 1.7). I found myself hiking in and out and exploring trail after trail. The abundance of trees at Cooper Creek keep the temperatures down, much cooler than up on the main road. I paid $10 a night for my site. There are faucets for drinking water and there are two vaults for bathrooms. There are no electric hook ups or dump stations. Primitive camping at it's finest! There are no reservations ... everything is first come, first serve. Have fun everyone!

I will say, it wasn't on google reviews, yelp or anything. I want to say we eventually came across it on Waze. If you know Suches, there's not much around so we were open to anything at this point. We drove to Kennedy Creek, it wasn't lit up or anything and we didn't see any cars so it made us a bit nervous. I can say now, i'm glad we went. There was only one other couple in there besides us, but the staff was amazing! Super welcoming and nice. We talked to everyone, even the chef! The food was phenomenal, flavorful, and huge portions. We definitely did not leave hungry. For a place so hard to find, and a little hole in the wall, it was fantastic and I'd love to go back when I'm in the area. We also were told it was a landing strip for smaller planes, and you could actually camp or stay in cabins on their land! Super neat. Go here if you get the chance! Worst andoullie (I'm guessing it was budget kielbasa with some cayenne pepper dumped on it) imaginable. The shrimp was incredibly over cooked and could have easily been mistaken for curly erasers. Two of the three guests couldn't eat it. The other guest ate it due to medical issues depicting regular meals be consumed. The guest did not like it at all, but it beat going into a coma. The remaining two guests ordered a roasted quail entrée and a rainbow trout entrée. After an hour and a half wait, neither guest received their meals. No salads were ever served. No bread. We had to CONSTANTLY beg for ice water. When we finally said enough is enough, the cook and I'm guessing the manager started with the LAME excuses. The joint wasn't busy at all, so no cutting them slack for that. We finally paid for our beverages and got the hell out if that clip joint, NEVER to return. It was one of the worst dining experiences that any of us ever had, anywhere from decades of coast to coast travel. And we're locals! Avoid this pitiful excuse for a restaurant. Drive on up to Blue Ridge or down to Dahlonega and hit Taco Bell or McDonald's. Your dining experience will be tons more rewarding that this place.

One thing I really enjoyed were the private bathrooms. Each has a toilet, sink (with handsoap), and a shower that can be adjusted for small children. The bathrooms are kept sparkling clean by the park. Dogs are more than welcome. In fact, most of the people there brought one or two dogs. The lots vary in size from canvas tent and car all the way to travel bus. It's great for a weekend trip away from the city noise!

New gravel is being put on some of the sites, The bathrooms have some replaced sink fixtures and are very clean. The campground grass has all been cut, plus most of the creek bank has also been cut. The old mill is on it's way to being opened back up for viewing. We camped in a 34 ft. fifth wheel , 50 amp power was good and the water was clean with a good taste. The sites themselves are very nice, and it is quiet. We did get hit by a storm, but our camper held up quite well. The lodge is also a beautiful building and has scenic views. The park was clean and there is a small nature center with live animals and reptiles. The staff are friendly and helpful too. The one downside is the firewood issue that persists in most state parks. You aren't allowed to bring in firewood from other places (unless bought in the area), and they charge you a ridiculous amount for what are little more than shims to use. Overall, this was a wonderful end to our Georgia journey.
