Found this "little Manila" Located in the heart of Queens neighborhood, the casual eatery serves home-style Filipino comfort food. we got there around 4 before the dinner rush, but once we sat down more people came in. there were so many selections on the menu and it was so hard to close from. but when we finally decided we end up ordering a few things to share. Service was on top of things, specially when I asked one of the waitress about my sister's ordered. They realized that they never placed in the order and they got right to it to make it right. I was amazed with the massive portions, incredibly tender pork BBQ, and rich Kare-Kare. Despite the unassuming exterior and small four-table dining room, it offers excellent value. No questions about the authenticity of traditional plates. Diners like me love the Bulalo (beef marrow stew), crispy pata, and the tender barbecued pork. The Halo-Halo and okoy also get high marks for texture and flavor. While the flavor is spot-on, on-the-ground diner consensus on the dining room is extremely cozy (fitting only a few tables), so wait times can climb during peak hours. Traditional Filipino in little Manila. The staff was super friendly. And the food was served quickly. We had the squid sisig tasted more like a squid adobo on a hot plate. The lumpia sariwa had a great portion with the sauce prepped really well with peanut crunch on top. The ukoy was different from most. No Sprouts mostly squash with shrimp shell on. It was the perfect fry. Every bite had a firm outside with soft interior. And they served the rice in this cut little cauldron. read more

They make Filipino food exactly how you would have had it at someone's Home back in the Philippines. It is not fusion. It is the real thing. Food to get here is Fried pork with crispy skin. Also their big bowl of Bulalo which is made with rich beef broth and so tender giant bone with lots of marrow and ligaments around the bone. It also has lots of cabbage. Actually this alone is sufficient for 2 people which is a meal in itself. But if you 6 people - then you can get 1 dish each but eat it like family style plus rice. read more

Loved all the items I had here! Favorites were literally everything I ordered, which were the laing, dinugyan, and especially the sisig pork. The palabok was just ok for me. So happy I found Tyang. Will be trying other dishes from here soon! read more

A great addition to the neighborhood. A place to be when craving Filipino dishes. The best local venue to beat being a newbie along the Roosevelt Avenue crossroads. We truly enjoyed our stay here. Great dishes. The bulalo presentation is a surprise and the best ever tried. The okoy and tortang talong are appetizing. The bbq and beef putchero met our expectations. The entire experience here felt like a warm hug. The food was amazing. These are foods I'm familiar with and have had from multiple places. Everything was exceptional. Chicken inasal and fried bangus (boneless) with garlic rice. Bangus is always my favorite. The turon was so yummy and that ube ice cream has officially become my favorite ice cream flavor. So so good. The waitress was so sweet and other staff I had some side chats with as well. It's a very cozy place with good space for NYC standards. Speechless. The outside looks very suspicious, and the ambiance looks scrappy... BUT OMG. A legit Filipino food spot. Everything we tried is amazing. This place is the caterer of our company for the holidays and decide to stop by to dine in. The servers are nice. Had the bulalo and crispy pata which is AMAZING. My friends and I absolutely loved this place. I have never done a Kamayan before and have been trying to find a good place to try it out. This did not disappoint! All of the food tastes so fresh and there were so many flavors going around. Not only do they provide you with a big spread of food but they also provide you with different sauces to dip your food into. Just be cautious as this dish is served per head ($41) and not by portion. The server was super sweet and set up the table in front of us as we watched in anticipation and awe. This was such a fun experience and the flavors did not miss at all, I would definitely recommend for a small gathering (5-6 people). My favorite thing on the table was definitely the mussels which were seasoned perfectly but that is not to say that everything else was not delicious! I just wished I could've eaten more but my group did end up taking around half the table to go. I will be back to try out items from their regular menu soon! read more

I was craving Filipino food and wanted to sit in so I walked into here and it didn't disappoint. I ordered bistec tagalog which was absolutely tender and juicy it came with a little pot of rice in a metal cauldron. The portion was huge so I left completely stuffed. I also had lumpia which came with a little side of dipping vinegar and a calamasi juice. Service was good. There were a few groups of older ladies and I was the only non-Filipino there. Tiang Gelays is not bad at all. The food is delicious. Service is friendly and fast. The price is very reasonable. I love that they have pictures on the menu so it's easy to "point" what I like to try. The place is typical of any Filipino eatery--bare minimal chairs, table and decors. Theres only one point I want to tell--Halo-Halo is very disappointing. Placed in a nice coconut container, looks yummy but lacks the sweetness that other offers. Taste very bland for me. read more

As a Filipino American who longs for the comforts of my past home, a meal at Tyang Gelay's is truly food for the soul. One of many Filipino restaurants in what is known as little Manila, Tyang Gelay's stands out with its made-to-order and authentic fare. Dining space is unassuming, clean and well-lit. Menu offers abundant Filipino dishes to choose from. My wife and I chose Crispy Pata (fried pork knuckles), Kalderetang Kambing (goat stew) and Ginisang Ampalaya.(suated bitter melon). The dishes came out rather quickly - a pleasant surprise since Filipino food takes time to prepare. The.Crispy Pata was expertly cooked with an ultra crispy skin and melt-in-your-mouth blend of pork meat and fat. The soy dipping sauce was an excellent foil to the somewhat strong pork knuckle meat taste. The goat stew had a serving of tender chunks of goat meat which to anyone is oxymoronic, as tough as goat meat gets. Complemented by fresh red and green peppers and a rich savory and tangy sauce, it hit all the high notes. Sautéd bittersweet melon was the perfect palate cleanser, perfectly cooked with tomatoes and shrimps. Even the rice was better in quality than what most other restaurants serve. Tyang Gelay's hands down is one of the best Filipino restaurants I've dined at this side of the world. Short of flying to Manila, this is as good as it gets. read more

They sat a party that came 5-10 minutes after us and didn't realize that we were waiting there. And did not apologize. And tried to make us wait again for another table. The food is really good. I ordered sizzling sisig plus sago't gulaman. Even without the egg in sisig, it was still tasteful. Portion is also big enough for the price. Service crew was so excellent, very cheerful, lively, and approaches you with a smile. Ambience was just OK.
