I'm glad I tried this place out! I feel like this place was very reasonable. We paid about $16 for a plate lunch, which included 2 starches (rice/noodles) and 2 entrees. The amount of food they give you can easily be shared between 2-3 people. I didn't think they could fit much in that little container, but they packed it, and more. I got 2 different fried rices, roast pork, and pork eggplant. The eggplant dish was a little on the sweeter side, and the roast pork was good to take home and make even crisper. I was able to eat some at the place and then have lunch for 2 days. They have a lot of chairs and tables to eat at. I did get the manapua, both baked and steamed. I tried the pizza, curry chicken, and regular char sui. The pizza and curry were okay, but I did like the baked char sui. I would get that again. They open "late" for people who start work before 8am, so called in day prior hoping to have it ready at my 8am pick up time that I had requested and he said "okay" to. The manapua was fresh and packed with just the right amount of savory spice. The filling is flavorful without being overpowering, and the bun itself? Fluffy perfection. I also tried the pizza bun, which was good but the chicken curry bun stole the show. I'll definitely coming back for more! The service was good. They didn't go above and beyond with any recommendations or anything. You have to know what to order. This is a TO GO type of place but they have tables where you can eat there too. I watched a special on PBS Hawaii recently about manapuas in Hawaii - how they differed from those originated in China. Most of all, how they're baked fresh daily. Never have I ever made a stop at Chun Wah Kam in my entire life, fearful of the lack in quality of food and fast-food nature - it reminded me of a localized Panda Express from the outside. Inside, I had my bar set low, so it was hard to disappoint. I gravitated towards, obviously, ordering manapuas - steamed. Only psychos prefer baked in my humble opinion. It was easy to order and I even asked to throw in a white rice cake for that extra nostalgia factor. Food quality was great. You don't get that spoonful of char siu in a big manapua type of deal here. It's nicely balance. The rice cake hit the spot and was at least 5x better than what I had whipped up the other time I tried to cook it at home. I also hear good manapuas are hard to come by in Maui/Big Island so they make for great treats to bring over to your friends/family when you go - next time I go back, I'll try scoop up some to bring over. We went in an hour before closing so there wasn't much to choose from so we ordered spicy garlic chicken and pork eggplant. The plates are soo reasonably price. It's definitely enough to feed 2 people. I love their pork eggplant. It's the one thing I crave from there. Spicy garlic chicken hit too. It was just the right amount of sweetness and flavorful. Their roast pork is also quite good - crispy and juicy, even if it has been sitting in the window for a bit. Have not tried the other lunch box options. We stopped by the store on Pensacola. Staff was very efficient and pleasant. Restaurant was empty and clean. We came here for 1 thing. BAKED MANAPUA! I just love their manapuas. I've tried manapuas from at least 4 other restaurants and Chun Wah Kam's consistently beats them. The bread is soft and slightly sweet and the filling is, in my opinion, proportionate to the amount of bread. My husband says their filling is sweeter than the others. I guess so. But not by a lot. Still savory and tender. I absolutely hate it when there's a little ball of filling surrounded by way too much bread. Do you? I wish they would bring back the sweet potato filled manapuas. Came here a few minutes before they opened. There were already people waiting in their cars in the small lot. I just went to the door cause I didn't realize they opened at 8. I ordered two baked manapua, two pork hash and two custard tarts, which I didn't know were only available Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. The char siu filling was on the sweet side which surprised me. The small pork hash had a strange texture, but tasted about right. Some people from this food discussion group I belong to had mentioned Chun Wah, so I wanted to try it. I wasn't impressed with the dim sum. Maybe I need to try the Chinese food. What else I wasn't impressed with was the worker's cold demeanor. Used to go here quite often. Sent an email to the regarding the reselling of leftover chun fun from the day before We have had no reply. Our favorite thing to order is the chowfun. Went there on a Friday morning around 9:15 or something. I ordered 2 plates, both with double orders of chowfun. One with double order of kau yuk, the other with double order of sweet sour pork. I thought the chow fun looked a little dark in color but ordered it anyway. The chun fun was very dry and tasteless, no amount of shoyu or mustard helped, thekau yuk had a lot of thick, dry pieces as did the sweet sour pork, Thought people should know about the chow fun, because it looked like was ,eft over from the day before. I really hate to post this, but in spite of how good the food is in general, they just cannot get some critical issues right. Today I went in right around 11 AM...lunchtime, right? How can you already be out of several items? I've gone at different times, mid to late afternoon, dinnertime, doesn't seem to matter, always out of several very good items. 1) Seems as though always out of numerous items. Specifically, curry chicken manapua, spicey pork manapua, half moon today. 2) Holding temperatures are unsafe. I got several items off the hot food line- salt/pepper fish, orange chicken, minute chicken. I once owned a small restaurant, and know that cold items should never get above 40f, and hot items never below 140f. These items were all well out of the safe range, as was the fried rice, and I opened them less than 15 minutes after leaving the store. The steam table pans were all full, so should have been fresh and hot from the grill/fryer. The steam table was either not on, not set at proper temp, or had inadequate water in it. I realize you can end up with waste if food is "held" too long, but based on #1 above, I don't see that as the problem. More likely, inattentive staff/management. 3) Menu, Item ID's on the hot line, and the in person ordering process are all chaotic. Menu board was not even working today, but normally all of the items noted in #1 above plus others are on the menu, but not the hot food line. Today was actually the first time I have been in when they had some handmade tags taped on the front of the food case identifying most of the food pans. That was a big help, but pretty tacky given the decor and cleanliness of the place as a whole. Additionally, the website has two different menus, neither of which is complete. There is a Menu tab, which has more of the manapua and dim sum, but no clues about the hot food line except generic pricing for entrees, noodles, rice. Then, to the right of the several "tab" options, is the "Order Online" button, which takes you to a completely different menu, missing even more of the the options from the walk in board. 4) There are a lot of people behind the counter, and they all seem to be tasked with handling the entire process of order taking, bagging, accepting payment...one order at a time. Plus taking phone orders. There is SO much wasted effort...crossing back and forth, working around each other, bunching up at the cash registers, pulling product out of the warming ovens at the back of the work area, serving up the hot food items into containers...and more. I would add, some of the help is notably slow and unsure of where to pull items from, others are much more energetic. It just should not take sooo long to package a variety of food that is ready to serve. What is needed is an efficient system that positions staff at key points for handling specific segments of the overall process; better management of food prep timing and quantities; and a unified menu system that reflects more accurate product availability across all venues. The food is very tasty and a good value, when they have the desired items and they are proper temps. read more

If you grabbed ealry, it was pretty good with the toppings of cabbage and spam. However.....it was a giant tray of almost noodles only with toppings on the top only. So it was a let down based on how much we spent for it. Typically, I really enjoy their food, Managua's, pork hash, etc.....and review would be higher for that..... Uh oh. Went to Chun Wah Kam today to fill up my freezer on their "half moon" which is weirdly in the shape of a round ball. The filling is delicious with just enough pork, fat and water chestnuts in a great balance, which makes this one of my favorites. Even as I expect prices to go up, shockingly this one soared off the charts. Intended on buying three dozen but at $1.70 a piece, I was only able to get two dozen. Let me be clear, they were $1.70 for one dim sum. Dear Lawdy Lawd. Add insult to injury, each single piece was only halfway steamed and they were all way too hard, yet sticky. Pretty sure they rushed it on the steam time. Of course when I'm at home I can re-steam them little critters but that's not the point. They should be done and hot, ready to eat. They were slightly warmed at best. The last time they were overdone and falling apart with cracks and holes in them, in almost every single one. Underdone. Overdone. Sheesh, get it right moon heads. At a dollar and seventy cents for each one, they should be perfect. I swear these were yesterday's reheated dim sum balls. There's nothing worse than old balls and that's a fact. Then too there were only a few people milling around. No lines of people, like before way back in the olden days of 2023. Scant buyers are very easy to explain. Truth is, if them hard, old balls go up in price again, that's my limit. I refuse to pay $2.00 for one ball. I'll be gone. Fo reals. I promise. read more

Located near Ala Moana shopping center, what a great location! The Manapua are stored in a warmer however my Manapua was not warm when I took a bite immediately after I bought it. The bun was not soft like the other guys and they was enough fat that didn't make this Manapua good. The pork hash was a little spicy too. There is a big spread of good selection but I can't say if any one is good. I heard the ginger chicken fried rice is yummy, although I have not tried it yet. There is tables to eat in the back and it's clean enough to have your meal. This place lacks good customer service, as such there is no smile to a customer and the workers seemed rather rude. They have all the seats available since the pandemic and it was kinda crowded when we went during early lunch time, but mostly people take out. I haven't picked up food from Chun Wah Kam in a few years. I was sad to see how the quality of food has greatly diminished as the prices have grown exponentially. The smaller "specialty" manapua are now miniatures, with a tiny amount of filling encased in way too much "bao" bun. The pork hash has also shrunk to a "mini" size, you can pretty much get a comparable product from 711 at this point. As for their hot food, everything seems to taste the same. There is not very much of a distinguishable taste between many of their menu options. It's sad that an establishment like Chun Wah Kam has become one of our only options for manapua and such... they are surviving because they outlasted the smaller shops which offered far superior products. read more
