I discovered this place while watching "cheap eats" videos on YouTube about must-visit food spots in Honolulu. I was really looking forward to trying the chow fun since it was one of the most recommended dishes in the videos. Unfortunately, when we got in line, they were completely out of chow fun! We asked the person helping us, and he said there was only one cook working and it would take about 15 minutes to make more. Luckily, there was a tiny bit left, and he gave us the rest so at least we got to try it. Since this was during lunchtime, I was a little surprised that a popular place like Chin Wah would run out of one of their most popular dishes. Besides that, the food was really good! The udon and fried rice were both delicious, and the orange chicken and garlic chicken were also very good. They REALLY give you a lot of food here, so the portions definitely won't disappoint! I'm glad I tried this place out! I feel like this place was very reasonable. We paid about $16 for a plate lunch, which included 2 starches (rice/noodles) and 2 entrees. The amount of food they give you can easily be shared between 2-3 people. I didn't think they could fit much in that little container, but they packed it, and more. I got 2 different fried rices, roast pork, and pork eggplant. The eggplant dish was a little on the sweeter side, and the roast pork was good to take home and make even crisper. I was able to eat some at the place and then have lunch for 2 days. They have a lot of chairs and tables to eat at. I did get the manapua, both baked and steamed. I tried the pizza, curry chicken, and regular char sui. The pizza and curry were okay, but I did like the baked char sui. I would get that again. They open "late" for people who start work before 8am, so called in day prior hoping to have it ready at my 8am pick up time that I had requested and he said "okay" to. The manapua was fresh and packed with just the right amount of savory spice. The filling is flavorful without being overpowering, and the bun itself? Fluffy perfection. I also tried the pizza bun, which was good but the chicken curry bun stole the show. I'll definitely coming back for more! The service was good. They didn't go above and beyond with any recommendations or anything. You have to know what to order. This is a TO GO type of place but they have tables where you can eat there too. Absolutely terrible! This location is absolutely atrocious! Waited in line for 45 minutes and still walked out without being served. The workers have no sense of urgency nor did they do anything to expedite the growing crowd. There was one girl dedicated to only doing "manapua" -- didnt answer phones or take orders, But just rolled her eyes at all the workers in the process. There were kitchen employees who were on the sidelines waiting to refill the hot entree stations (3 to be exact), but the front of house staff could care less. They moved at the awesome pace of nail growth. The phone was constantly ringing, which perplexed me that I STILL had to stand in line even if I preordered anything. Additionally, the same people who were servicing the "walk in" customers also had to tend to the phone, the walk in customers AND the preorder/prepaid/phone order peeps. Food is delicious, i've been a customer for over a decade. However not too long ago i found roach parts in my manapua. I could distinctly tell because of its hairy legs and also found a long string that turned out to be its antenna !! We immediately called the place telling them about our issue, not even for a refund but the person on the line just laughed it off and told their co-workers "this guy just wants a refund!!" while we were still on the line and heard laughter from them. It was very disrespectful and we received no refund. We will no longer be a customer, and from reaching out about this, a lot of other people shared their experience with me so it wasn't the "luck of the draw". I watched a special on PBS Hawaii recently about manapuas in Hawaii - how they differed from those originated in China. Most of all, how they're baked fresh daily. Never have I ever made a stop at Chun Wah Kam in my entire life, fearful of the lack in quality of food and fast-food nature - it reminded me of a localized Panda Express from the outside. Inside, I had my bar set low, so it was hard to disappoint. I gravitated towards, obviously, ordering manapuas - steamed. Only psychos prefer baked in my humble opinion. It was easy to order and I even asked to throw in a white rice cake for that extra nostalgia factor. Food quality was great. You don't get that spoonful of char siu in a big manapua type of deal here. It's nicely balance. The rice cake hit the spot and was at least 5x better than what I had whipped up the other time I tried to cook it at home. I also hear good manapuas are hard to come by in Maui/Big Island so they make for great treats to bring over to your friends/family when you go - next time I go back, I'll try scoop up some to bring over. We stopped by the store on Pensacola. Staff was very efficient and pleasant. Restaurant was empty and clean. We came here for 1 thing. BAKED MANAPUA! I just love their manapuas. I've tried manapuas from at least 4 other restaurants and Chun Wah Kam's consistently beats them. The bread is soft and slightly sweet and the filling is, in my opinion, proportionate to the amount of bread. My husband says their filling is sweeter than the others. I guess so. But not by a lot. Still savory and tender. I absolutely hate it when there's a little ball of filling surrounded by way too much bread. Do you? I wish they would bring back the sweet potato filled manapuas. The small pork hash had a strange texture, but tasted about right. Some people from this food discussion group I belong to had mentioned Chun Wah, so I wanted to try it. If you grabbed ealry, it was pretty good with the toppings of cabbage and spam. However.....it was a giant tray of almost noodles only with toppings on the top only. So it was a let down based on how much we spent for it. Typically, I really enjoy their food, Managua's, pork hash, etc.....and review would be higher for that.....
