I moved recently to Tacoma and found a nice apartment at Orchard Terrace Apartments. I Needed to rent a 15' truck and I was surprised this location had one, including all types of supplies for moving. The gentleman that helped me was kind and professional. I was not sure of how many miles for this local move, so I over guested the amount, but was reimbursed for the miles I did not used. I rented a truck at 650 Saturday night. Asked the guy if I could come back when I had a ride he said it wasn't a problem. I paid movers 274.03 to show up at my apartment on Sunday morning at 5 am then when I tried to pickup the truck later that night. I couldn't get the truck because they had blocked it in. I took a video and sent it to the very unhelpful condescending manager Malia and she said emailed me and told me "we have refunded the amount you paid for the truck" as if that's helpful. Obviously they'd refund the amount I paid for the truck. I never even got it off the lot. She in her original email tells me that "my staff routinely blocks vehicles in and I'm sorry they didn't notice that truck was on rental" but then in the next email after I tell her I paid movers and wasn't able to move. Her story changes to "a customer returned a truck and blocked it in. So we're not liable for what. Customers do" funny how the story changes as soon as I bring up reality. She offers me a refund on the truck I never even took delivery on. Stay as far away from this place as possible the manager will do nothing to help you. And lie to you about the situation then change their story. So in the end. I'm out nearly 300 dollars for to a movers and that's when the managers story changes. To deflect liability. read more

We rented a truck from this place but we were not issued a pick-up receipt. We returned the truck because the truck had problem. We were not given a replacement truck. I asked for a returned receipt the representative said he will email it. Three days passed still no receipt was sent so I went back to the site to ask for my receipt but the representative got angry and threathened to call the police. I checked with the credit card company and discovered I had been overcharged. Do not rent from this outlet. Employees are rude and dishonest. Be sure to ask for ur receipt to make sure you had not been overcharged. I wish UHaul will close this rental site as this gives the company a bad reputation due to rude customer service. read more

I rented a van, drove 10 miles, put $10 worth of gas into it and was still charged $30 for gas. I don't understand how 10 miles is $40 worth of gas. Called the owner all l got was attitude. My $10 put the gas right where it needed to be until l drove 2 miles to the drop off location so l understand being charged a little but not $30. There's no was 1 gallon of gas only gets me 5 miles. Wasn't allowed to rent. I made a reservation and showed up to pick up my vehicle on time and began the check in process. The employee asked for a second contact name and number. I provided my wife's number and the man immediately called the number. The call went to voicemail and the man hung up without leaving a message. I asked why he called the secondary contact pointing out that this scrutiny was highly unorthodox and something I had never experienced before. He called her number three more times and hung up each time. While this was happening I asked two other customers who had already been served if they had to provide a secondary contact and if the employee insisted upon calling the secondary contact before renting. Both customers informed me they had not experienced that level of scrutiny. I am an employed, non-criminal, homeowner with valid ID and payment and must just say I was insulted by the treatment I received. It was embarrassing, arbitrary and plain rude. When asked why this was happening to me I was told "new policy". I've used Uhaul my entire life, 36 years, including five times in the last two years without issue whatsoever. After this experience I will never go again. I called Home Depot and rented a pickup for $20 for 75 mins. Job done. No problems. Don't ever go to this U haul. To the manager, you're losing a lifelong customer and perhaps other customers that saw this crap transpire. To potential customers, don't do it. Try Home Depot if it's just for a day, Enterprise if it's longer. read more

Absolutely trouble free, in and out very fast! Showed up at my reservation time and they immediately brought the truck I requested around. Did a quick walk around and verified the gas was full and away I went. I rented a 10' truck for 4 hours, round trip was 25 miles and it cost me a grand total of $47. Some tips: 1. Make the reservation online at U Haul's web site, it worked perfectly and no talking to humans needed. 2. When making the reservation it says in large bold letters that your auto insurance will more than likely not cover damage to the rental. So they want to sell you their insurance which was either $14 or $28 depending on the coverage. A quick call to my State Farm agent and I found out my comprehensive coverage absolutely covers the rental. Saved the money! read more

This location was crazy busy. I had reserved a truck in advance and pick up was fairly easy. At drop off they were backed up with trucks flowing into the street. The two ladies working were hustling around to get customers in and out. I was impressed by their attention and care. CHRISTA was the absolute best. I had some discrepancies in pricing of my storage unit. Even with how busy she was, she remembered my name & called me to let me know it was all corrected. Kudos & thank you! read more

Reserved for 830 pm pick up. Confirmed. Couldn't get access to after hours pick up as advertised. On hold for 45 minutes only to find out no truck for me they can't do pick ups after hours. Update to Review: I was contacted by the U-Haul regional office and they resolved my issue within 24 hours, getting me a trailer so I could resume my trip. I was appreciative that they stepped in and took care of me. Original Review: The rude and dismissive owner provided terrible service. James was unfriendly from the beginning. I asked several questions and his answers were curt and uninformative. I got the impression that he didn't want my business. We went out to attach the trailer to my truck and he told me that the brake lights weren't working. When I asked him if it was my truck or the trailer, he said that it was my truck. I questioned this and asked if the trailer could be checked and he repeated that it was my truck. He referred me to the Lakewood location to get my truck wiring repaired and they confirmed that there was nothing wrong with my truck, it must have been the trailer. Unfortunately, I was not able to get another trailer rental and I had to delay my trip because of James. read more

I had a very good experience here. I made my reservation online - very easy. I was a bit late to pick it up and actually got a call to see if I still needed my truck. I showed up and the place was swamped, and there had been an employee snafu with locking the keys in a truck, but the gentleman who was taking care of customers was still patient and courteous. He told me later that 90% of his customers are distraught and upset about their reasons for moving (death, divorce, foreclosure etc.), and he tries to take this into account. I found this to be very compassionate. Also, I neglected to check the fuel level in my walk around, and didn't note it was a bit lower than was stated. I refilled it to the same spot, and this came up when I returned the truck. However, when I explained, they understood and didn't charge me extra for not putting enough gas in. I was very grateful for their lenience with me, as it was really my mistake for not checking in the first place. I would definitely use them again and recommend this location. read more

We rented a truck recently and had an ok experience. The customer service in the store that day was good, however I did not verify that the 15/16 tank of gas was in the truck before driving away with only 1/2 a tank of gas. Long story short, I ended up paying for 14 gallons of gas after only driving 14 miles because of my own error. I called the next day to discuss with customer service and they said a manager would review and get back to me, but I never heard from a manager. I will take responsibility for not verifying the amount of gas in the truck, but I do wish the correct amount was in the truck to begin with. read more

Worst customer service ever. Book stuff online, 3 days later they call and say it isn't possible. Don't offer any solutions. Just can't do it. Then they try something and call 30 minutes later and can't do it. I booked a trailer for the 8th and they say they can't put a hitch on until the 9th. That's useless. Says it takes 4-6 days to get the hitch parts. That was on the 1st. The 9th isn't 6 days later. Then they book me for 9am on the 9th. Get there and they say they booked me for 12pm. So then I come back at 12pm. They person that is supposed to do it shows up 30min late and doesn't apologize or anything. Literally the worst place on Earth. This place is purgatory. Went in to rent a truck. Told nothing was available. Told to try and reserve one at another store. Went online, had a multitude of trucks available. Went back inside, took 45 minutes to check out. Does not understand the importance of having a reservation!!! I reserved a truck with 3 dollies from this location 3 weeks in advance. When I showed up for my scheduled reservation, I was informed that they did not have ANY dollies available!! I had a very limited window to do my move based on my move-out date. I couldn't do the move without the dollies so had to change to the Federal Way location which put me well behind my schedule. I am disappointed. Initial good experience until gas tank issue when we realized they charged us for gas after we put in 2 gal of gas for the 19 miles we drove. We moved 1 curio cabinet. It was unreasonable to charge us 2 more gals of gas for their smallest truck? That is less than 5 mpg??? Really? Glad I didnt move across town w a full load. Poor customer service! I went there for propane. I pushed the button for service, waited for 5 minutes but no one came out. I went inside and asked for assistance. The attendant was on the phone, but said it would be a few moments. I waited 10 more minutes. I went back inside and they ignored me for 10 more minutes, so I interrupted their conversations with other customers to see if I could get a timeframe on how much longer. They said they were too busy and weren't sure when they could help. I would have left if they would have been up front with me on how long it would take. Won't be back. read more

Shout out to Tameya who handled a tricky situation on a super busy Sunday like a pro. In Seattle we were given a 'in town' truck when we had reserved a 'one way truck ' to drop off in tacoma. They were trying to get us to drive it back to Seattle because they couldnt accept it being 'another zones truck' when they should have given us the right one way truck to begin with. Long story short she worked it so we were able to return it without getting charged double (for their mistake) or wasting a trip to Seattle and back. Thank you Tameya!!! read more

The employees at this location are so wonderful and helpful and have a great attitude. We were renting a motorcycle trailer and found out we didn't have the correct wiring harness hookups for it and their location didn't have any. Instead of turning us away Wesley took the extra time and helped us find another location that did. We went and picked up the harness and came back to rent our trailer from them. First they wouldn't accept my credit card because "we only accept bigger banks." When I explained that it was chase, he then said they wouldn't accept any cards with rewards. I don't think there are many banks bigger than chase in the area. Then after arguing with the guy and asking to speak to his manager. The guy finally called his manager who said they would accept chase credit card but not debit card. So then the guy started taking a picture of my drivers license with a phone that they just leave on the counter for anyone to access. Wtf?? Negative no stars :This is year 2 of lack of communication with this place my first time they wouldn't take prepaid debit card or capital one or credit union cards only key bank or US bank so I had to bring my 85 yr old grandma up there to get my Uhaul just to use her card. Then today I call to push back my pick up time the lady says that's fine and I still have to return it at same time I was fine with that asked about the policy for payment she said debit credit or cash is accepted and prepaid as well unless I'm in Canada the policies are different I came in today they had no documentation of me arriving later and told me if someone else pays they have to be the driver that's complete BS I wish they would get there info correct I will not be returning they did not have good customer service I am usually really nice but that pissed me off. OK, so who knew you would see excellent customer service at U-Haul. Not talking excellent for U-Haul, we're talking EXCELLENT for anywhere as in topnotch. Called looking for specific moving item and Steve the manager was very helpful. In person, he was already assiting two customers and one was questioning the charges and starting to get agitated. Steve was extremely patient & professional and very calmly answered and addressed her concerns. She walked away happy. The service witnessed is the type every business should aspire to have. I will never be doing business with this U-Haul again. I was told I could rent the truck for 24 hours by the sales associate, who did not review the contract with me, or I could check it in through the app in order to night drop. Upon asking how to use the app to check in the associate had no knowledge as to how to use the app. I explained to him my order was not in the "orders" section of the app and he told me "well I don't know what to tell you." By 745 the next morning the manager Tyler called me telling me the truck needed to be back by 8am. Upon communicating my concern, he seemed extremely unsympathetic and proceeded to feed me excuses as to why the associate didn't go over the contract. I will never be doing business here again. I have had some bad customer service not with just this location, but Auburn, and the company as a whole. The horrible customer service started when I initially started to pick the trailer up. I get off work late and can only make it in a little before they close. I didn't know me showing up before they close was going to be such a inconvenience for them. Trailers loaded up and agree to the 68$-69$ charge for the trailer. I bring the trailer back the next day to a location 30 mins down the road in Tacoma and ask them if I'm able to drop it off there. I was told that was ok and I left a number for them to call if there were any problems they said again I'm fine and shoed me out. No receipt nothing. Never got a call back so I figured everything was taken care of. I get a call next morning saying I never returned the trailer... I get an email two days later saying I owe $196.73 what?... I get in contact with Uhaul customer service and talk with Kristin thinking it'll be a breeze and get my money back because of the misinformed information. Boy was I wrong! This lady fought to not reimburse me the amount like her paycheck relied on it. I asked to speak with someone higher up than her who might be able to help me and was told that that person was on vacation. Ha. I was told they would reimburse me for the late charge but not for the info they failed to tell me. I did not agree to this charge but since they had my card info they could charge me for whatever they wanted without my consent and they did so. I have never felt so robbed and helpless from a company before. I know this amount is small to uhaul but I don't have as much as they do and it does affect me. It sucks there isn't many other places that I can rent a trailer from but because of this experience I will find other options and never go to uhaul again. read more

The online rental was easy. The store front desk was friendly. The reason I gave 1 star is when I arrived at my destination there was a lock on the back door and I wasn't told there was a lock nor was I given a key to unlock it. I called the store, which was already closed, and spoke to a online rep and told her the problem. She told me there should have been a key for the lock attached to the key-ring i told her there wasn't one. Since I was at my destination I couldn't return to the store. I told her I was going to find a cutter and sever the lock. Not only was I stressed and extremely mad but now I had to locate a cutter to get the lock off!!!!! I located a cutter and was able to get the lock cut off. I tossed the severed lock into the cup holder. Very displeased with having to do this and waste my time. read more

I reserved an 8' pickup online to run an errand and was delighted that I was able to get one day of; now I understand why. Dude was nice enough when I picked it up, but when I returned the truck he tells me it has 80 miles on it. I didn't think that sounded right for driving to a couple spots in Tacoma and I said as much and he feeds me some garbage anecdote about how you can "lose track of time behind the wheel." I commute from Tacoma to Seattle 5 days a week; I know how far 80 miles is. Considering I had the rental for less than four hours and hadn't taken it on the freeway, I would have had to be sitting in that truck a loooooong time (averaging 30 mph on city streets). Sure enough I went home and Google mapped my exact route: and I'd only gone 18 miles. I knew I'd forgotten to check the actual mileage on the odometer when I checked it out, so shame on me this time. The truck was fine but watch that you don't get hustled too! EDIT: One of the folks here looked into the issue and refunded me the difference and gave me a call. Mistakes happen; I appreciate their initiative. That being said, don't forget to double-check all your readings before you leave the lot! read more

This review is specifically about my experience with U-Box. We have used U-Haul in the past (truck rentals) and had good experiences, and so when it came time to move across the country we decided to try their U-Boxes. Unfortunately we did not know that the Tacoma location is the busiest location in the U.S. and they can't keep up with the amount of business they are taking on. After I paid for this service I found out they have no tracking system... You are left wondering where your boxes are until they call or email you (which could be days, or in our case weeks.) Because they are so crazy busy at this location we had a difficult time getting help and a lot of mistakes were made -our shipping date was entered in their system wrong, we were overcharged, our boxes wouldn't latch so we had to fix the hardware ourselves, no orange rain covers, and our requested drop off date had to be changed because they didn't have enough drivers. After many phone calls they did help us resolve our issues. But we didn't get our boxes for 2 weeks after we had moved into our new house. Not convienent and had I known they are that busy I would have gone with another company. If you have to ship in or out of the Tacoma location, make sure to ask about shipping times BEFORE you pack your boxes, and what their process is. They will not guarantee any delivery date. Expect delays. The U-Box side of U-Haul is new and they haven't worked out the kinks. Hopefully they will because its a great idea if they can staff they way they need to in order to keep things running smoothly. read more
