Was excited to come here for the gluten free option. But after asking about it, we learned that they could only substitute the noodles and just take out the chashu and other ingredients with a charge of $4! I'm not sure what would be left after that, so I just substitute the noodles and left everything in there. The GF free noodles were very choppy and short in length. Tasted not bad. Delicious ramen spot- but I've yet to try the ramen. We went with appetizers- gyoza - fried with pork. Really flavorful. The shrimp pops are panko fried with a sweet chili sauce. Spam masubi was delicious as well. You get 4 nice size pieces. Service was good even though they were busy for a Friday. A lot of tables and also seating at the bar. Beer on tap. Wife had the tonkatsu ramen and I had the shoyu ramen. Tonkatsu broth was very tasty and rich. My wife was very happy with it, and I certainly enjoyed the little I sampled. Unfortunately the shoyu broth was very, very bland and disappointing. Honestly, it was slightly more flavorful than water. At least the noodles were good, and the portion size was quite large. This is a nice open space but there's not a lot of seating--some seats at the bar as well as tables. We were there with our kids so it took about 10 mins to get seated. Husband and I each ordered Tonkotsu ramen and the kiddos ordered the kids bowl--1 shio, 1 shoyu, The food took about 15 minutes to arrive and looked delicious! The pork was well cooked and delicious, noodles were well cooked but I wish the broth was a bit more flavorful. We added some togarashi and chili oil to liven it up a bit. My kids devoured their bowls but were still hungry afterwards, so we had to grab a second dinner elsewhere. We came in without looking at the reviews. Let's start with the positive. I think the wait staff was very kind and I had no issues there. There was no wait and a couple of empty tables left in addition to the bar seats being fully empty. We were also happy to see they had two vegan options which is what we ordered: one miso ramen and one shio ramen. As for the food, I looked up the Yelp rating right after we ordered and welp. We both did not like our ramens. They use the same rice noodle pack that is available at Costco. The tofu was pretty much raw, which is not the end of the world for me, but does add to overall being very basic and flavorful in tandem with the other things. Also something on or in mine didn't smell very good, like every time I lifted my soup spoon, there was something that smelled like dirty dish water. My bamboo shoots were fine by my partner said his were really tough and he had a hard time eating it. He left most of his bowl without eating it. While they were very kind and I wish them well, unfortunately the food was bad. We won't be back again. I hope Uchiwa Ramen can update their recipes. read more

I came here to try some ramen. I usually eat ramen in San Mateo or Palo Alto so the standard is a little different. Prices here are around $19 per bowl which I do think is pricey for the east bay. I tried the tonkatsu ramen and they really give you THICK cuts of pork belly. The other ingredients were also nice. The ramen noodle itself was great, not too soft or firm. The soup was good however not as creamy as I like. It was on the thinner side - similar to what most reviews said. Service was good, he kept coming to fill our water. It took 30 minutes for our order to arrive... for TWO ramen bowls and ONE takoyaki. And it wasn't even a busy night. I've seen snails work faster. Tonkatsu Ramen: I'm convinced this was vegetable broth in cosplay. There was zero pork flavor, zero richness, and the broth was that sad translucent color that whispers, "I was boiled for 10 minutes, not simmered for hours." A true tonkatsu broth should be creamy, whitish, and slightly sticky from collagen -- not... this. Also, why was the broth lukewarm? Tonkatsu should arrive piping hot, not feeling like it's questioning its life choices. The "chashu pork" tasted like someone boiled it and said, "Good enough." The egg? Also boiled. Not marinated. Not jammy. Definitely not an ajitsuke tamago. Basically, everything tasted like it skipped flavor orientation day. Takoyaki: I don't know what technique they used, but it wasn't the traditional flip-turn method. These were fried. And the octopus? Missing. Gone. Vanished into the multiverse. Not sure why the ratings aren't as high but I'm here to share -- don't shy away from Uchiwa Ramen! Located in a big shopping mall, one could find this ramen joint directly across from the AMC theater on the third floor. We arrived late afternoon on a weekday so the place was empty but that was okay -- we don't need a crowd to have a good time. We tried the following from the menu: * Tonkotsu ($18.95) described on the menu as fresh ramen noodles, chashu (braised pork belly), soft boiled egg, bean sprouts, spinach, mushroom, green onions, and bamboo shoots in a rich pork broth. * Miso ($18.95) described on the menu as fresh ramen noodles, chashu (braised pork belly), soft boiled egg, bean sprouts, asparagus, corn, green onions, pickled vegetables, bamboo shoots in a rich miso broth. * Gyoza ($10.95) described on the menu as fried pork or vegetable dumplings served with a ponzu sauce. * Cucumber Salad ($4.95) described on the menu as thinly sliced Japanese cucumbers marinated in a vinaigrette dressing. Everything exceeded our expectations! The gyoza and cucumber salad were great appetizers, and prepared thoughtfully. The broth for each bowl was distinctive to its own features and owned its name. The miso soup hit the mark for me, and the ramen noodles were fresh as claimed on the menu. My only small critique is that I would have preferred my broth a bit more pipping hot as it was more on the luke warm side for me, but it will still delicious. First, the front of the restaurant is a hang out for mini thugs, it feels like there would be a flash robbery any minute, I constantly had to watch the front door for the safety of my family. The wait didn't feel so long; we were chatting about the things we watched that day and the dishes came within short intervals. The shio ramen was in a clear broth with naruto and menma bamboo shoots. The toppings were almost the same for the other dishes as well; pleased that there was an egg too. The noodle was my favorite part because it was my favorite springy kind. The soup tasted good as well; not too salty that I was craving for water later. Returning to the toppings, i was also happy on the pork portion. It wasn't slabbed in the center of the spotlight stage like some of the ramen restaurants here, it was a support character. This is the style I prefer because I came here to eat ramen, not pork in broth. This pork was tender; easily can be cut into pieces with chopsticks.
