Phenomenal Ramen spot in San Rafael! It's super hard to find a ramen spot that is gluten free friendly and Uchiwa very clearly labels which items are gluten free on their menu. Tonkatsu Ramen- Egg is a perfect soft boil with a slightly runny yolk and the vegetables are fresh. The broth was a little bit flat and didn't have that umami flavor compared to other well known ramen spots. However, I still enjoyed my ramen! Each ingredient was also arranged very carefully and precisely in the bowl for a fantastic presentation. Tantanmen Ramen- Ground turkey for those that aren't a fan of pork. Spam fries - If you like spam, this is a must order! We ordered a group doordash order, and they did a great job labelling each individual order. This is the best ramen I have had in a while. Sure, the prices are on the higher side but its worth it for the quality of ingredients and depth of flavors. I came with a group of 5 about an hour before closing time and the employees quickly put some tables together for us as some people left so that we didn't wait too long to be seated. Broth options are Shoyu, Shio, Tonkutsu, Miso, Vegetarian Miso and Vegan Shio. Our vegetarian and vegan friends were super pleased, and I was a big fan of the rich broth of the Tonkotsu. It's served with thick wavy noodles, 2 pieces of tender chashu, half a soft boiled egg, bean sprouts, spinach, mushrooms, a liberal amount of green onions and bamboo shoots. For $13+ it really is stocked full of good stuff. The Cucumber Salad appetizer was a favorite and something nice and light to cut through the heavy soup. The Goyza are fried and that would be the only thing I would have passed on because it didn't really add anything to the meal. (pre-covid-19) This is a perfect place to come for lunch they always have a table and no wait time. Which works perfectly when you're in a time crunch. They are quick and have to sat the broth here is great. I usually get the spicy garlic one with chicken instead of pork and extra spicy. Usually it is not that spicy but they will give you sauce and pepper to put in your ramen. I've eaten here a few times. First time was 2019 and it was very good. We went a few times in the last year and it was just ok. Today we went and it was just bad. I got tonkotsu ramen and it tasted really off like the pork wasn't fresh and broth just didn't taste good. It was Tuesday so maybe they made it over the weekend? I asked if I could get something else which they were nice about. I got the veggie miso and sadly that was bad too. The broth just didn't taste good. My first dine-in experience at Uchiwa was so incredible (the sweetest waitress, and yummiest rice bowl), that I went back a second time - this time for take out. I placed my order online and drove about 20 minutes from where I live to pick it up. When I arrived, the person at the front told me my order wasn't ready yet and the store owner or manager (I believe his name was Kevin) came over to let me know that they had accidentally made my order wrong so they were in the process of remaking. He apologized profusely and asked if I could please wait a little longer. He offered me a seat and some water. Not even 5 minutes later, my order was ready and he even added some candy as an apology. I just want to say, that this level of service and kindness is unparalleled. I was not even a little upset or impatient with the mix-up, but he made sure to go above and beyond and I couldn't have been more happy with the service and the food. It was warm and delicious! I had the pork chashu tacos ($6 appetizer) and the Tonkatsu Ramen ($13 bowl). The tacos come in two, and they're each about 4 inches across, smaller than a street taco, but very rich and flavorful. Ramen had excellent Tonkatsu broth and included an egg, wood ear mushroom, chopped bamboo shoots, bean sprouts, spinach and 2 slices of pork. Very flavorful and layered. The noodles were also cooked al dente with the right amount of springy/chewiness to it. Broth comes out piping hot and keeps its temperature fairly well throughout the meal too. Definitely a nice ramen place, with moderate portions in a casual environment. There were about 10 tables with additional bar seating for 8-10. I went to Uchiwa Ramen for dinner on Saturday night just after it opened around 5:45. My friend and I were shown to our table right away, but I noticed that towards the end of our meal, the place was starting to fill up. The staff was very friendly and made the safety guidelines very clear on when to wear or not wear a mask. In my experience, Marin has never had the best Japanese food, however; I was satisfied with my dinner here. The menu has plenty of options for a place that specializes in ramen. My friend and I were both there for the ramen though, so we ordered the tonkotsu ramen ($15.95). This type of ramen is the most classic style you can get, so if you aren't sure which to order, then this is the one for you. I was very pleased with the flexibility of allowing us to switch out some of the veggies that came with this order! The server said that we can switch out any vegetable with another, even from other bowls. I personally switched out the mushrooms and bamboo shoots for corn. The broth was nice, but I've had ramen before that was a lot richer and creamier. I wouldn't say it's the best ramen I have ever had, but wasn't bad either. The noodles were cooked well and all of the other toppings tasted great too. The bowl is a great portion for the price so there is no need to order any appetizers, unless you are starving and can put away a lot of food. The atmosphere of the place is pretty cool with this dark wooden theme. Everyone was very friendly, the service was quick and the price was typical for the quality of food we had. San Rafael has never had the best parking situations, but we were able to find some meter parking one street over. The meters in the area stopped at 6:00 pm on Saturday so keep that in mind if you want to save some change. Finally ordered from Uchiwa tonight! I have been wanting to eat here for a long time because I love that they have veg/vegan broths! We ordered 1 Vegan Ramen, 1 veggie ramen and 1 veggie ramen with spicy kimchi. I was wondering how they would pack for delivery, but everything arrived perfectly plated in bowls with the broths piping hot in separate containers. The veggie miso broth is thicker and creamier than the vegan broth but both are flavorful. We had some chili sesame oil at home and I added that for a spicy kick. The noodles are soooooo tasty, and the bowl is chock full of fresh veggies, tofu and that perfectly soft-boiled egg. Love love love!!! Having worked in Japan on and off for a few years, I developed a particular fondness for ramen. I loved that my employer in Japan (Hitachi) had a homemade ramen house right in the factory, as one of its cafeterias, and when I lived in SF I was a regular Japantown habitue. So, now that we live in the far north of Marin, I was thrilled to see a new ramen house open in San Rafael... in fact it was a teller at the former Novato Citibank branch who first told me about it. Yesterday my wife and I found ourselves across the street from Uchiwa, and decided to give it a go. First, the place was packed at 11:40 am, always a good sign. They had a wait list sign-up, but fortunately there was a two-top open, so we sat down. The pork gyoza were delish, deep fried rather than pan fried but real tasty with just the right amount of soy/vinegar/heat in the dipping sauce. We both went with the Shiyo ramen on my wife's suggestion - she had lived in Japan for five years when her dad was stationed there in the Air Force, so I don't argue these things with her. The ramen noodles were perfectly ad dente, the chashu was tender and had a marvelous ring of fat that gave it both a wonderful mouth feel and exotic taste, but I thought the broth was a bit bland... I usually go with shoyu, so I will have to circle back soon and give that a try. We both thought the portions were great - not too big but generous, and the other patrons (a line had formed while we dined) seemed to be enjoying a wide variety of dishes. It seemed like something was missing. The chicken was pretty soft and well-marinaded. The vegetables tasted naturally sweet, but didn't seem to go well with the soy sauce broth. The " fish cakes" tasted like one of those pre-made from Asian grocery. I wish that they had marinaded the egg, too, but that was just an idea. I asked my husband about his Tonkotsu and he thought it was okay. We thought that maybe the desserts could make up for it. The dessert menu only had a few things that were available that night. Anything with chocolate was not available. Bummer! We ended up ordering caramel/Hawaiian Red Sea Salt macarons and another disappointment -- they were way too sweet! What really made up for this was their attentive and friendly servers and the short wait for food. We wish this would become our good spot since we live so close, but it didn't happen. I just ate at Shinmai in Oakland which people are raving about. Their tonkotsu ramen was very good but it just made me appreciate Uchiwa's even more. Uchiwa's chashu is so tender and fatty good, the egg also cooked perfectly with fresh vegetables and corn. And I love the texture of the egg noodles. I'll try the gluten free ones next.
