    Kalbi set
    Marie K.

I ordered a kalbi set. I loved the udon with a little bit of spice(table had red flakes). It was very filling. Kalbi was good but a bit on the salty side. My partner ordered negi-toro don set. He liked his dish.

Great food for an even greater price. Crazy that places like this still exist in the city. The karaage was admittedly not that great, but had a really homey taste. The udon, however, really surprised me. The tempura was hot and crispy, and the tennose bukkake udon had so many toppings. The bonito flakes were large shavings and tasted much better than what you can buy in the grocery store. I will be back again soon!

I always come here for a reliable meal! I've been coming here with my friend since high school (back when it used to be Udon West). I love the set options on the menu and everything is decently priced (although prices have gone up in the past few years). I stopped by more recently for my usual (curry set) and it's just as I remember it to be: warm and comforting. The only thing I feel like has changed over the years is the udon broth, nowadays it's a tad bit too salty for my liking. The service is pretty good, you get your food shortly after ordering and it's a great solo dining place with the bar seating.

Fourth time here. This has been my partner's favorite place and I will say that they are consistent. There's new staff, who are very friendly. The tempura is good and the fatty tuna over rice is a safe option.

I got the Pork Cutlet set, and after waiting 35+ minutes in a waitlist at a nearby soba spot and being told they'll prioritize larger parties for seating after I followed up, I was relieved to find a spot that could seat me as a single diner. My food was ready fairly shortly. This spot wasn't too loud, so it was great for a lowkey night. The pork cutlet was crispy with cabbage drizzled in flavorful sauce. The rice wasn't too soggy and paired perfectly with the cutlet. The udon noodles and soup tasted comforting and familiar. This spot is cash-only, but there was conveniently an ATM right outside.

Casual and cozy Japanese restaurant with great prices. They are cash only. The niku udon I had was delicious, the portion was huge! I loved the flavorful soup. The combo meals are also a great price, the curry set was great. The service is fast.

Everything here hits. It is a no frills experience. Restaurant recently went viral due to recteamnyc's post so expect to wait a little. We waited around 20 min at 6pm on a Saturday night so not too bad. Seating area is small but that's why it's a hole in the wall and is reflective of an authentic Japanese experience as if you were in Tokyo. Server is very friendly and you can tell she loves her job and has been running the place for years. Udon broth had a deep flavor and the noodles were solid. This is a homey nostalgic dish. Pork katsu curry was delicious - perfect curry flavor and crispiness of the pork. Negitoro was larger than expected (even though I know I was getting the large). Wasabi provides a necessary kick. Lots of extra rice but just drop it in the udon soup when you have no more noodles. Cash only. Cheap prices for NYC. Will be coming back

Me and my friends were craving a comforting meal as it was raining today. We were in the area and found this place. It is cash only which is stated in the front and on the menu. It looked like most of the seats were at the bar where you get to see all the magic happen. The food is affordable and I loved that the udon broth was not super sweet like other udon soups I've had. Pretty good portion for the price too. Lunch time seemed like it got busy pretty quickly so expect a wait during peak times.

    Kaki-Age Udon

CASH ONLY. You're getting what you pay for. A decent meal for a decent price. I got the kakiage udon and had no complaints. The udon was from a frozen block so my expectations were not high, but they cooked it with the right amount of chew, the soup base was good, and kakiage was cripsy. The bowl itself was only $12 and I was full by the end. If I lived closer, I would easily stop by and grab a cheap bite :)

THIS PLACE IS CASH ONLY WITH A $10 MINIMUM PER PERSON. No frills udon shop serving some other classic Japanese fare on st marks. Ordered the takoyaki, curry udon, niku udon, and ebi-ten on the side. Total after tax and tip was a little under $50 which by NYC standards I'd say is very fairly priced. Everything was solid, but not mind blowing. Still think it's a great casual spot to go if you're looking for some reasonably priced food. I'd definitely come back. Space is pretty small. Mostly counter seating with a few tables in the back. Would not recommend for a big group. 2 is ideal. 4 would be max imo. Service can be a little slow since it's only like 2 people working, but they get food out at a pretty reasonable clip and keep things moving. Would recommend!

3.5 We are not into Udon but my family was ok with the other items on the menu. Small place - bar style seating upon entering, with a view of the kitchen which looked very clean. 3-4 small tables in the rear. Looks updated. Service is very attentive. Clean restroom available. No fuss type of food. Negi toro rice bowl was simple, not much toppings, better with some soy sauce and wasabi. Hamburg can be in a combo but got it as an appetizer; patty's small but tasty. Takoyaki was good, creamy center. Squid tempura in rice bowl was a bit soggy though I liked the flavor. A good place for quick, cheap eats.

I missed this place so much, I know they were closed for a while and reopened and I visited after years of not coming back. I ordered their Karaage set and thankfully everything still hit the spot. The Karaage is so crispy outside and tastes soo good with squeezed lemon juice on top and the mayo it comes with. Their udon noodles are soft and chewy and I love how this set comes with rice too! This place is CASH ONLY so be prepared to bring cash!

I've been coming to udon st marks since 2019. It was my to go spot since it was affordable. You could get a set for $12-13. Prices have gone up since then but the food is still great. I always go for their sets which are pretty filling. I usually get their sausage, croquette, takoyaki, or cutlet set. I recently tried their kalbi with my friends and it was too chewy (3/5). I love their cold udon, super refreshing in the summer and the noodles are nice and chewy. The space is pretty small with mainly counter seaters so not the best for large groups. Also this spot is cash only!

There was nothing on that menu that let us down. We started with two Calpico sodas, which are always a solid choice. My wife had the Omu Soba and loved it. I went with the Tonkatsu Ramen and that dish was everything. Rich, satisfying, the kind of bowl you do not want to end. We also shared the Kalbi, which are Korean short ribs, and they were outstanding. All three of us were on the same page about those. My son added two salmon tacos to the mix. He enjoyed them but said they did not hit quite as hard as his Mew Special Roll, which was clearly the standout of his night. It features raw tuna and what I believe is a combination of salmon and seared salmon on top. Either way, that sear flavor is really good. Worth trying if you get the chance. The space was lively and busy, which gave it a great energy. We ended up at a long communal table with another couple, but it never felt cramped or uncomfortable. There was enough room to breathe and enjoy the meal. My son mentioned his back felt a little tight from the seating, but that was a minor thing in an otherwise great night. Izakaya Mew delivered on every level. Great food, great atmosphere, and a dinner I am already looking forward to repeating

The creamy kimchi udon was ok. It didn't feel like one dish, but tasted good. The una don was great. Good sauce and blend of supporting veggies to enhance the taste. Service was super quick. Everything was rapid fire: order taken, food comes out quick, water gets replinished before asking, plates are taken the moment they are finished, and check comes immediately after asking for it. Interior was cramped and loud. Really fitting as many tables as they can in the space. I saw others mentioning to make reservations. I went without one and got lucky. There was a table opening 30 minutes out. Would recommend having one, but you can definitely try walking in. First come first serve basis Overall, solid spot for great tasting food. Great for smaller parties of 2, but expect it to be tight with spacing

Even before the food arrives, the restaurant leaves a strong impression with its stunning Japanese-inspired interior. The space is beautifully designed, blending warmth and elegance in a way that feels both inviting and refined. From the soft lighting to the natural wood accents and thoughtfully arranged decor, everything about the atmosphere feels intentional. It captures the intimate charm of a traditional izakaya while still feeling modern and stylish, making it a wonderful setting for anything from a casual dinner to a more special night out. The food more than lived up to the beauty of the space. One of the first highlights was the salmon onigiri, a dish that proved how satisfying simplicity can be when it is done well. The rice was soft, fresh, and perfectly formed, holding together without feeling too compact, while the salmon added a savory richness that made each bite feel comforting and flavorful. It was balanced, delicate, and deeply satisfying in a way that made it memorable despite its simplicity. The seared salmon salad was another standout. The salmon itself was beautifully prepared, with a lightly seared exterior that gave it a subtle crispness, while the inside remained tender, buttery, and smooth. That contrast in texture made the dish especially enjoyable. Paired with the freshness of the salad, it felt light and refreshing, yet still substantial enough to feel like more than just a side dish. It was a dish that managed to feel both clean and indulgent at the same time. The grilled squid was particularly impressive and easily one of the most memorable items of the meal. Squid can often be difficult to get right, as it can become rubbery or overly chewy if even slightly overcooked, but that was absolutely not the case here. The texture was spectacular--tender, delicate, and pleasantly springy without any toughness. Each bite had a light smokiness from the grill that added depth, while the squid itself retained its natural sweetness. It was expertly prepared and showcased a level of precision that really stood out. For the main courses, both the Tonkatsu Ramen and the Black Pepper Ramen delivered distinct experiences, each with its own appeal. The Tonkatsu Ramen was deeply comforting and satisfying, with a broth that had a rich, velvety texture and a full-bodied depth that coated the palate beautifully. It felt smooth, hearty, and luxurious without being too heavy. The noodles had an ideal texture as well--firm enough to provide a satisfying bite, yet soft enough to soak up the broth and integrate perfectly into the dish. Altogether, it was a bowl that felt warming, balanced, and incredibly comforting. The Black Pepper Ramen, on the other hand, brought a bolder and more assertive flavor profile. The broth had a smooth, glossy texture, and the noodles again had a pleasing chew that gave the dish structure and substance. The black pepper added an unmistakable warmth and aromatic intensity that made the ramen stand out immediately. It was flavorful and memorable, though the pepper was slightly overwhelming at times. A bit less black pepper would have allowed the other flavors in the broth to come through more clearly and created a more balanced bowl. Even so, the ramen was still enjoyable, especially for those who appreciate strong, pepper-forward flavors. Overall, Izakaya Fuku is a restaurant that succeeds on every level. The stunning Japanese interior creates an atmosphere that feels both immersive and elegant, while the food reflects a real attention to detail in both flavor and texture. From the comforting salmon onigiri, to the fresh and beautifully prepared seared salmon salad, to the expertly grilled squid with its exceptional texture, and finally the rich and satisfying ramen dishes, every part of the meal felt carefully executed. It is a place that offers not just excellent food, but a complete dining experience, and it is well worth visiting for anyone looking for standout Japanese cuisine in New York.

It came with cabbage (with a sesame ginger type dressing), daikon radish (with some type of sauce on top), and the standard sauce for the tonkatsu, along with some crushed sesame seed and hot mustard. I'd have to say...the tonkatsu was quite good....not quite as sublime as my favorite tonkatsu place in Tokyo...but still, very, very good. The dish also came with a bowl of miso soup (good, and not overly salty) and a bowl of white rice, which I considered the most disappointing part of the meal. The rice seemed a bit dried out...not moist.... All in all, an excellent meal. I'd definitely come back.

Their location is a little hidden, it's on the second floor above Soba Noodle Azuma on 55th Street between 7th and 8th Avenues, closer to 8th. You have to go up a stairwell on the side. Getting to the food, their focus is on meat, seafood and vegetable skewers though they also have a variety of appetizers, rice bowls and noodles, and dessert. The meats and veggies are grilled over charcoal while basted with "tare", a house-made sauce that adds a level of umami to the caramelized grill flavors. Recently I got a handful of skewers for takeout, including: - Ebi (shrimp) $8 x 2: the shrimp were cooked just right, tender and juicy, yum! - Hotate Eringi (scallop and oyster mushrooms) $8 x 2: the textures of the oyster mushrooms and scallop pieces complemented each other, and were kinda similar. Another tasty offering. - Negi pon (pork belly with scallions) $7: I'm not a huge fan of pork belly in general, though they grilled it well here and chopped scallions added a little spicy tickle. While not the cheapest for skewers that you can find, (and inflation hasn't helped,) their flavors are authentic and their quality and consistency is key here. I'm glad it's still here since there seems to be fewer and fewer good yakitori spots in Manhattan these days. They used to have another location in the city though I believe this closed pre-pandemic, however from their website they now have another location in Boston. This was also the sister restaurant to Ramen Totto which had four locations at one point though all have shuttered as well. Hope this location stays around for a long time!
