So this place is located in the heart of Gerrard st., desis might know it's a street full of Indian and Pakistani restaurants-it used to be the place for desi food years ago.Now restaurants are everywhere. So Udupi is an underground restaurant serving Indian snacks,dosas,thalis and chaats.I have had their thali years ago and it was amazing this time I was craving dosa hence decided on an onion rava dosa stuffed with potatoes.It was crisp and fresh and the chutneys accompanying it were delicious.We also tried the paper masala dosa which was pretty predictable.The highlight of the meal was the delicious samosa chaat-warm and gooey with delicious house chutnies.It tasted so non commercial.I loved it. We also tried the gulab jamans-they were fresh and light.Very tasty.I ordered the masala tea and wasn't too impressed by that hopefully they can work on their chai game I found it very weak. We were heartily welcomed into this charming restaurant, asked about take away, and invited to sit and peruse the extensive menu. We decided to stay for lunch. The place is homey and nicely decorated with crafts and artifacts. The owners have a gentle humour that makes you feel at home. We were regularly visited, always kindly, attentively for our needs and wishes, treated like royal guests, but elegantly. The food was unique and delicious, simple yet interesting and the ingredients fresh, the spicing just right. The best samosas we ever ate: tall, stuffed full, crisp and hot. Delicious veg Indian food from an unchanging no-frills restaurant. The only thing that seems to change over the years is the cast of invariably friendly, and efficient staff. Years ago when I lived in the city I used to be a regular though I never exchanged names with any of the staff. I recall bringing a date one time and ordered my two-person usual: masala paper dosa and thali. I'm not sure if they realized this was a date or not but nonetheless they decided to have some fun. They brought us a gigantic triple-sized paper dosa with a second table to accommodate the ludicrously voluminous food. Needless to say my date was impressed that this entire restaurant had decided to play wingman for me that evening. The first spot that I tried after dine in started in Toronto after covid lock down. It is such a relish to have dosa after a long time. And can't expect much and can't expect it to be same as back home. Compared to being in Toronto and getting south Indian food definitely made my day. This place has degraded very badly since 2018 which is when I started going there. I used to go once a week - that I have stopped. The counter guy has no respect for our money and he serves a COLD DOSA. I will recommend my friends not to give this man any business. read more

Ok, I admit I'm not an expert on Indian food. But the family enjoyed their meals as had I. My brother-in-law brought us here which is a positive because, as a local, he does have some street cred. Really good vegetarian food! The thali comes with an abundant amount of curries, more than your average even! The rasam was amazing as well, very flavourful. The onion pakoras were disappointing as they lacked that heavy crunch and seemed like there was more Channa than onion which is a Nono. The uttapam was a bit disappointing, not very flavourful and quite plain. The real winner is the Szechuan dosa! Completely different from any dosa I've had. The large variety of flavours, the zestyness and spice was on point. A nice change from your basic dosa with potato curry. The main reason I gave them a 4 instead of a 3. My wife has been craving for Dosa's for a while now and the urge hit hard on NYE day 2018. We know that there are better options out of town but we wanted to go somewhere close to where we live-ish and so Udupi was it. I have actually eaten here before and thought it was ok at the time and that thought continues. As Yelp calls it, a 3 star review is A-Ok and that's what Udupi Palace is. The atmosphere is probably the worst part of this place but if you know anything about Indian restaurants in India, it's actually quite accurate. The service is fine and the food is fine. I've had both better and worse Dosa's in both Canada and India. If you're not in the mood to drive way out of town for the best, then Udupi Palace will serve you just fine. read more

Strolled in here and had to try their dosa! You know it's a bit more authentic when it's busy with South Asian customers. They had a diversity of customers overall. I went for the Spring Dosa also the featured picture in their dosa menu section. The stuffing includes spiced vegetables (cabbage, carrots, tomatoes) and potato. It was light and refreshing and I love the curry-like sauces that you can dip it in to pack the flavour. My friend ordered poori bhaji which also looks pretty impressive. She also liked her meal. Even though they only serve vegetarian, I wish they carried more ingredient options in their dosas. I loved the food! We ordered chaat, paneer makhni, and south indian thali. Lots of bold vs. subtle but delicate flavours. Their papad was also crispy and salty in the best way. The portions are pretty big; they give you lots of rice, perhaps even too much. Menu clearly indicates vegan, vegetarian, and gluten free food, which I appreciated. The ambiance was... interesting. i was taken there by family and friends and all had travelled a lot and tasted good food in many countries. 3 vegetarians and four carnivores. since the environment and the smiles of the staff invited all of us to give their restaurant a try. it was very hot outside but inside it was comfortable. the aroma from the kitchen was enticing. Came here during a food tour of Little India. I probably never would have come otherwise. We were fortunate enough to be taken into the back to watch them making the dosa. Wow, that was impressive. I truly enjoyed the food. No idea what was ordered but there were plenty of different dishes to try. We're looking forward to going back on our own and ordering up the menu! The food here was incredible! I came here on my last day in Toronto in which I decided to check out the Little India neighborhood. I have seen this place featured in a CBC documentary, and it also had the best reviews for indian food in the area. I ordered the yellow dahl, Onion Bahjia, and Masala Dosa. The Dosa was huge! Filling was delicious. The Onion bahjia was absolutely delicious and I way over stuffed myself just to eat every last bit of it. Yellow dahl was just as good. I was able to order everything I ate gluten free, and as a vegetarian restaurant they cater very well to current dietary restrictions. I would highly reccomend a visit to this fantastic place! I've been going here for years. I'm surprised that I hadn't left a review! So as far as dosa goes, it's the best in the city of Toronto. After having dosa and uttapam in India, I looked for a place that could come close (and I tried a lot of them!). Udupi was the only place in Toronto that could come close. Udupi is one of the two places in the GTA that I am willing to eat dosa. They have a lot of space. I believe it is not accessible (strollers need to be carried down). They do have a kids menu and a play area. Good to come with families or groups. It's one of the few Indian restaurants in Toronto that I recommend. Don't hesitate! read more

If there is ever an Indian vegetarian food heaven, I think it's here. Our party of 7 dine at Udupi last night and we all thoroughly enjoyed every dish we had. We started with the Sev puri which I call it "a party in your mouth" because of all the unique different flavours and textures that just explodes in your mouth. We did family style in which we shared a variety of dishes but my favourite is the vegetarian curry recommended by one of our server. I also really liked the masala dolsa. Perfect combination of crunchy crepe with tasty potato inside. The chilli paneer was super spicy for me so eat at your own risk. Service was quick and efficient. This is one restaurant that I would always visit when I am in that part of town. Apart from the delicious South Indian vegetarian dishes like dosas and thalis, they serve my favourite Idli Manchurian - a fusion of Indian and Chinese textures and flavours - to die for! My wife is not satisfied until she has had her fill of bhel and dahi puris and other snacks and my son cannot get enough of the falooda - an ice-cream drink with all sorts of interesting ingredients mixed in - a typical Indian drink, though exotic. This is hands down, the best indian food I have had since Malaysia. ( Malaysia, especially the west coast is very heavily populated by south Indians. Thali on Banana Leaf for lunch is prevalent , cheap, delicious and very popular.) The food here is completely vegetarian, and full of flavour. My meat-eating significant other was wary at first, and now suggests a trip to Udupi regularly. The Mysore Malsala Dosa is incredible. Spicy, not too salty, with the most wonderful coconut dip. Paper thin, lots of filling, perfectly made, always warm. The Saag Paneer is delicious, never oily always fresh. The Chana of the lighter variety and has incredible depth. We have tried other currys and random starters and they were all good as well. The service is great, very friendly guys and they refill your water glass after nearly every sip. The decor is nothing exciting, but its clean and comfortable enough. Love the tin plates. Thali is $8.99, dosa is $6-8 or so, Curry (with rice, bread etc) $8-9. So good. Wicked Indian food with a twist. This is a vegetarian restaurant, and they will modify their items to meet Vegan / Jain needs. For those of you that don't know what Jain food it is they are a group of people that don't eat anything that destroys the plant, so they won't eat potatoes, onions, but they will eat tomatoes apples etc. We ordered Chole Batura (Chickpeas and Fried Bread), if you have ever had puri's a Batura is a giant sized puri, it is pretty wicked and I beg you give it a try, I think you will be in love. We also ordered Vegetarian kebabs! They were spicy and cleared my sinuses but it was worth every penny. And we ordered Manchurian Idli's (Manchurian - This great sauce made out of garlic ginger and vegetable broth, Idli's - Rice pancakes that were deep fried) I highly recommend any of the above, and the total with a $4.00 tip came to $27. read more

I had been to Udupi Palace once before, while on the UYE Little India crawl. I'd totally forgotten about it until I logged onto Yelp this morning and noticed that Kat T had a ROTD for this place, and I thought to myself: "Self! Let's go to Udupi Palace for lunch today!" Luckily, self (and my husband) agreed. I'd forgotten that Udupi Palace was a vegetarian joint. As a meat eater, this made me a little bit disappointed, but once I stuffed my eager piehole with delicious dosa, I'd forgotten all about the lack of tasty animal. My husband and I split the Masala Dosa, which was huuuuuge but a little skimpy on filling. For my entree I decided to go North Indian and have the Matar Paneer, which was excellent. We've been here twice, once about five years ago and again a month or so ago. I love the 'scene' here. Families eating, kids running around, plates with improbably big dosas - looking like wrapped flowers - being delivered to every table. And the dosas are great. Everything we've had here has been tasty. Try a chat. We had a samosa chat and it was a winner. I think we need to go here a couple more times to really give the menu a deeper going over. We always look longingly at patrons who have ordered the thali (in all the Southern Indian places we go) but we don't want to miss out on the dosa. Udupi Palace also holds a soft spot for us since it was one of the first times we ever had dosa. Since then we spent some time in Jersey City where there is a huge South Indian community and some of the best dosas that can be had in the Americas. I returned to udupi palace yesterday with a girlfriend and had a much better experience. We're both gf and my friend has a zillion allergies. The server was happy to answer our questions and knew without hesitating which things were safe. We shared the idli (rice and bean patties) which were served with two yummy sauces. We then each had a dosa. Yelpers ain't lyin' - the dosa are fantastic! My friend had the paneer masala, which was served much like a wrap. I had the special rava masala dosa, which was delicious but puzzling. It was more crispy, and dotted with holes (like Swiss cheese), and in the middle of the dosa was this yummy pile of potato and onion. I'm not sure how I was supposed to eat it, but I enjoyed tearing off bits of the dosa and using them to scoop up the potatoes. Definitely recommend. read more

It came with two vegetables, Dal, Rasam (south Indian Spicy Soup) Sambhar (Veggie Stew) White Rice, Chapati, Yogurt, pickle, Papad and dessert.
