I held off writing a review for almost a year in hopes that Kenny would live up to his word, and I didn't want to say anything disparaging considering he recently had shoulder surgery. I don't know if he'll continue to work in the field...he was "mostly" retired when we contracted him. Who knows, maybe we were the last job he did. Anyways, Ultra Developers finished our job October 2024 and it was a big one...at least for us. Our house is on a hillside and badly needed an old, poorly built Trex wrap-around deck and a lower wood one replaced. The backside of the house is 25' off the ground on the upper floor so we knew it would be important to have someone with a lot of experience to handle it. This is what gave me confidence in Kenny, he's been around and is very confident. The glowing reviews were also great. I think the thing that changed between us and his previous jobs was that he rushed the job...badly. He did what was necessary to fix the crumbling substructure but the finishing work was substandard. We over-extended ourselves (for the sake of durability and longevity and had very expensive ipe installed) and the attention to detail that you would like to see on a project that costs as much as a mortgage on a nice house just wasn't there. I felt like I needed to regularly keep an eye on him and his loudmouth (#1 crew) to make sure things were being addressed, sagging areas leveled out, boards finished off and screwed in properly, etc. Not only was the construction "rustic" with $$$ boards being ripped freehand without any guide (looks really great!) the sealer he swore by by Behr absolutely sucked. I asked him about using a highly recommended PPG oil based sealer but he assured me he'd never had any issue with it and said he would warranty it for 2 years. He wouldn't warranty the PPG since he didn't know it. Well, after about 2 months the sealer was already blowing off down to the raw wood and discoloring. Now, almost one year later, it has held up in shady, covered areas, but anywhere there is exposure to the elements it's just gone and looks like crap. I don't actually know if it was a matter of the application though because the lower deck which Kenny subconrtacted to another builder (crew #2) is perfect, it shows some fading but otherwise no complaints. It also doesn't get as much sun. Their attention to detail was much higher so maybe it was just that. After the top deck's finish started wearing (after the first rain) I let Kenny know but he was very unresponsive. When he finally did respond he said "looks like it could use another coat". What!?! That's not how this stuff works. You can't just add coats over failing coats. When I reached out multiple other times, as well as to his (good crew #2) subcontractor (who said it would need to be sanded completely down and re-applied for $5000), he said he couldn't afford to address the problem and was still healing from surgery and that there was a product that would open the pores of the wood to allow new coats of sealer to penetrate. Well, that was August 1st when he said he had had enough of talking about it...but would be in touch. Ok. Bottom line is that we got our decks replaced for $68,000, but one of them wasn't what was promised, and I have no faith that that promise will ever be addressed in the slightest manner. I think Kenny is a cool guy and does have experience, skills, and abilities but he skipped the "attention to detail" part on this job and that's something that always bothers me when I go out and see the deteriorated finish, wonky cut boards, broken screws, and sloppy joints. If you want to do a job just to make some quick money so you can rush back to your cool-weather retirement home do people a favor and just retire and let them hire someone who cares about the quality of their work. read more

We have had a lot of work done on house this past year and not all experiences have been positive. Kenny was responsive and super knowledgeable. Got really lucky finding Ultra Developers Inc. I had been trying to find a deck/patio builder for a couple months. Had a few meetings with contractors but couldn't find a good fit or responsible company. Luckily Ultra was building a deck in the same neighborhood, my wife happened to see one of their signs on the lawn and seeing is believing look at the pics! Super happy and couldn't be more pleased with the end result. The first meeting with Kenny was great, unlike the other companies I spoke with he was very hands-on, he not only does the sales pitch but he "he walks the walk". I like that he wasn't just being a salesman who can practically just say whatever but he knew all the terms, the actually materials and equipment. Most of the time it's someone selling someone else's work but Kenny actually puts in the work as well. During actual production the crew was very friendly and professional always being very tidy and organized which was appreciated (especially during these times because both my wide and kids are home the entire time). Chris, Kenny's right hand, was also great and very knowledgeable and pro. Best of all the end product speaks for itself, during the process I had a lot of questions/concerns but I've learned to "trust the process" than to nag too much. I'm glad I did because in the end all my concerns were gone. I could go on and on but I'll finish with this, we appreciated the quality, attention to details, nice clean edges and angles and everything being "straight". Kenny and Co are very honorable and on two occasions where I think most developers would throw a blind eye they were very upfront and honest. I am a landscape architect, and my sister and brother-in-law had a wood deck that needed to be replaced. Wanting something that required less maintenance than a wood deck, and longer lasting, they decided on Trex. I had one of my regular landscape contractors provide a bid, but we decided to get more quotes from companies that Trex recommended. Kenny's bid came in substantially less than my contractor's bid (by approximately 20%), and was also slightly less than the other referred companies. Normally, going with the lowest quote makes one nervous, and the fact that Kenny was able to start almost immediately, made us even more uneasy. But Kenny seemed very knowledgeable, and was very responsive to any questions we had, so Ultra Developers was chosen. The shape and design of the existing deck worked well, so our initial thought was to simply duplicate what was there. Along the way during construction we decided to make some changes, and Kenny and the crew were so easy to work with, never making us feel like the revisions were a hassle for them. The crew did an unbelievable job, with final details that were above and beyond anything that I would have expected. Update: Now I have contacted three separate deck companies and the California State Licensing Board. Each one expressed strongly that in order to reseal a deck the door pans are necessary. None of them will will warranty the deck now without doing a complete redo of the deck and the pans seals. More over none of them can say that the pans are are the problem. Also the deck itself isn't sloped right so water does not flow properly to the drain. The deck itself has failed and Kenny Brooks does not want to re do his job. The California State Licensing Board has sided with me and will be sending out the enforcement folks next. If I were trying to get something for nothing then why did I pay $4200 in the first place! This reseal job failed due his negligence and he is trying to avoid having to redo it. I gave him every opportunity to fix this and am reasonable about cost. Again it was a year and two months that I discovered the deck leaking again. It's a slow drip so who knows how long it has been leaking not to mention a large portion of that time was summer time. Blaming the Customer when your job failed is not right nor is my pointing it out slanderous. It is my truthful experience and I won't stand for this. All of this has been a very negative experience. Final update: I have officially won at the Binding Arbitration. In order to Kenny Brooks and Ultra Developers to do anything about the failed deck job I had to go thru several hurdles. First contacting him and go thru what was a process of excuses for the deck job leaking. When that failed a complaint had to filed to the California State Licensing Board. The mediation person tried get him make good on this and sided with me. That failed so I had to go get three more bids from different deck companies all of who agreed with me. Then the enforcement folks from the said board got involved and suggested Binding Arbitration to which I reluctantly agreed. That hearing happened and once again he was found to be negligent. I was only awarded 80% of the money back so I am out $840. Now I have another crew coming to finally get this job done right. Almost two years of aggravation and now I will be under construction again. My negative experience hopefully will help someone else to not have to go thru the nightmare I did.
