Excellent food and a great spot if you're in Cape Porpoise, only a short 10-15 minute drive from Kennebunkport's Dock Square. We started with the oysters, which were fresh and delicious, and shared the seafood mix for two. Everything was cooked well, flavorful, and showcased the quality of the seafood. The atmosphere was relaxed and welcoming, and the service was friendly throughout the meal. If you're looking for fresh Maine seafood without a lot of fuss, Ultramar is definitely worth a visit. I've always loved The Lost Fire and now I am adding this restaurant to the list. We booked at 8:30 reservation, we got there around 7:45 to get a drink at the bar and our table was ready, but we decided to sit at the bar anyway and soak in the ambience - the decor is so relaxing and unique. The cocktails are great - we got the Tito's martini and the spicy margarita. Each and every menu item that we had was delicious. The flavor was powerful and layered. Ultramar is a beautifully decorated dinner & drinks spot at the end of Pier road with nice harbor views. Our bartender was very friendly and informative - made an excellent dirty martini and old fashioned (even tho it was a steep $21). Brussel sprouts as an app were perfect. I got the avocado salad and added salmon on top - I wish the salad had more than 5 big pieces of Bibb lettuce but wow it was delicious. Salmon was perfectly cooked and I highly recommend the lemon aioli with it. Crab cake was phenomenal. Mashed potatoes were soooo creamy and buttery, 10/10. Wish broccolini was smaller and cooked more. Overall, wonderful service, fun ambiance, and excellent food. read more

Ultramar is owned by the same chef as Lost Fire, so if you're familiar with Lost Fire, you'll see a lot of the same menu items. For example, the desserts and sides are nearly identical. Ultramar has more seafood options, whereas Lost Fire has more meat. I prefer to dine at the bar. It's just really loud at the tables. There are acoustic titles on the ceilings, but I'm not sure it helps. Also, during my most recent visit it was so cold. Everyone in our group was cold and each time a new group of patrons was seated around us they remarked to the host about how cold it was. He said told one group that the temperature was warm for some people and freezing for others. I'm not really sure how that could be true, unless it's colder for the servers who are constantly moving around. Maybe just bring a jacket with you just in case. Additionally, during my most recent visit, our server was a little frazzled. For example, she took all the wine glasses off the table, but two people in our group ordered wine, so when she came back to pour the wine, she ended up grabbing wine glasses off an empty table to serve their wine. She also struggled providing market pricing on menu items and took a few guesses. It would have been fine if she just said she'd find out and get back to us. She did seem aware that we weren't really impressed and did frequently check on us afterwards. I ordered the restaurant's version of a gin and tonic. I keep forgetting I don't like their version. In my defense, it's been about a year since my last visit. I like a gin and tonic to be refreshing. Theirs is a bit more complex. I also had the filet with the garlic mash potato as my side. The mash potato was a little bland. It could have used more garlic or butter. One of my family members ordered the swordfish kebabs and those were a big hit. We got married here 15 years ago when it was Pier 77 and came back for dinner. We could not have been happier! Our server, Sherrie, was fantastic! Stopped by for a drink and small bite in the bar. Reservations are recommended even for the bar. We were seated quickly and the restaurant has a lovely view and lovely ambience. The bartender, Jared, was friendly and made a delicious spicy margarita. We had lobster chowder, the chopped salad, and the sourdough bread. Wow, were do I start. I have been going to this restaurant for the last two years. I have always been pleased, but not this time. First parking is a big problem. I park in front of the restaurant and was told to move. There are no signs to not park in front of restaurant. Second problem is the table next to us had two small dogs. The dogs were on the bench and were being fed at the table. GROSS...Third issues is the waitress ask my brother in law if he ever smiles. What an insult. I asked her what was to cost of MP scallops and she did not know. Food is very limited and average. I have not notice it in the past but it was very cold in restaurant. We originally tried to go to Lost Fire but when there were no reservations available, we decided to test out UltraMar. We were seated at 7pm and didn't recieve any food (even bread) until 7:45. Service is definitely slow but the food more than made up for it. I got a delicious Cosmo to drink and we shared the seafood tower for 2 (the ceviche was to DIE for.. I could drink the sauce), a lobster bisque, crispy brussels, swordfish skewers and the smoked potatoes. Every single thing we ate was sooo amazing. Beet salad was as bad as a salad could get. Arugula was so limp and/or heavily dressed that it was like cooked leafy greens. It was my main course so needless to say I was quite disgusted. No effort to comp bill, even though salad was not eaten. Grilled Octopus was tasty however not even 3 oz portion. Not worth the money. Tres leche cake, was very very soggy as though was not fresh. I realize this cake should be moist as we have had it other places many times over the years. This one was clearly sitting around way too long and should not have been served. I will be thinking about this meal for a long time. From start to finish, everything was fantastic. The surprise star was the (not pictured) scallop ceviche which was one of the lightest, freshest ceviches I've ever had. Being in Maine, I opted for the lobster spaghetti for my entree and oh my goodness. The presentation was a fun added touch and the amount of lobster in this dish was truly impressive. A delicious evening at this new restaurant with my in-laws! Atmosphere: swanky, but approachable vibes. Awesome views of the water. Great ambiance all around. Great modern decor. Loved the jazz music playing in the evening! Food: all of our dishes were delicious! We got the chicken, seafood paella, the whole fish, and a few veggie apps for the vegetarians in our group. Disregard the lower ratings! We went to Kennebunkport-York-Ogunquit for a week and this was far and above the best meal we had the whole vacation. The ambiance is elegant and yet laid-back. Our server, Kristen, was polished, incredible and knew the menu inside and out. We tried their autumn special cocktails and were delighted with the date margaritas and the pear gin and tonic. I judge a bar by how they make their dirty martini and mine was perfect! They of course had delicious fresh oysters that were well-shucked and cleaned. The clam chowder was the best we had the entire week. I would travel again just for a bowl of it! Everything was cooked to perfection- I had the scallops and my partner had the branzino, which could not be hyped up enough. The skin was crispy and the flesh was tender and flaky. They also have sauce pairings which elevate each dish. Get the roasted potatoes if you can, and if you like horseradish! Definitely order dessert! 5 stars is not enough for the experience we had. We were seated for quite a while before our drink order was taken, then another long wait for drinks to arrive. Food was delicious but portions were small. Started off by sharing the Avocado Salad with my spouse. It was 8 leaves of Bibb lettuce, half an avocado, and some crispy prosciutto for $17. Definite not worth the price. Ordered the scallops for my main which comes with one sauce and one side (pictured). Four scallops in the dinner serving and it cost $42. I don't mind paying more for a place with a great location and ambiance, however, I did not feel like the portions were worth the price. Others in my group shared this opinion. AWFUL AWFUL AWFUL. This was supposed to be a nice dinner out with a friend who is leaving town soon and it was anything but. I had been there for a party about two years ago and the food and service was great. This time the food (except for the wedge salad) was sub par and the service (except for the host and the assistant host) was worse. We ordered our drinks and food together. After a long delay, we had to ask the assistant hostess if we were getting our order any time soon. The drinks came after the meal came out. We ordered two soups and two salads. Only one soup came out (the lobster bisque - without a spoon) and it was burnt. They tried to tell us it was because it had been flambéd...not our first rodeo, it was burnt from the bottom the pot. They replaced with the clam chowder which was ok. We asked that they hold the prosciutto off the salad because the diner is pregnant and they didn't so we had to send it back. What came back was 4 pieces of Boston lettuce and two wedges of avocado...for $14. The bread was good ($4). I live in town and have a very successful AirBNB and therefore lots of guests and I will never recommend or dine at the resturant again. Thumbs Down. Very disappointed. read more

We are VERY impressed! In fact, we were amazed that Ultramar had only been open for a few weeks as everything ran perfectly. Decor, food and service we're all excellent. They clearly put a lot of thought into the look, feel and comfort of the interior. The decor provided a very cool, modern aesthetic, supported by great views of the harbor. A really nice place to sit and eat for a couple of hours. The food was outstanding at every turn. Beautifully fresh oysters, Hen of the Wood mushrooms, a perfectly balanced salad, delicious halibut with corn succotash, roasted potatoes, and the octopus. Then for dessert, we had the chocolate soufflé and the pavlova. Do you know how hard it is to get that perfectly chewy texture in a meringue? Well, they nailed it. Nice wine list too, with an interesting mix of wines by the glass. I'll also mention the service because that may be the hardest thing to get right in a new restaurant. Everyone was working as a team to produce flawless service, and it showed. From the moment we came in to when we left each person looked after us like old friends. Read previous early reviews and did not seem to be off to great start but decided to see for ourselves. First impression of the restaurant was very nice interior, decor, location and view. Service started off nicely, lovely waitress and service was prompt and attentive but slacked off during the meal. Food was mixed. Heirloom salad was disappointing and did not have any heirlooms at least that I have seen before, tomatoes were more like hot hose but this is end of July. The Crudo was good and tasteful. My party enjoyed the Caesar Salad which was crisp, fresh and many positives. My group had multiple orders of the Halibut and everyone said it was prepared nicely and all enjoyed it. The disappointment was the mussels which were small and not worth ordering again and suggest you avoid the Paella which was over cooked, served with three clams and just lacking any substance for $48 which we thought was a misprint. While visiting Maine my cousin wanted to take me to a restaurant she truly loves. The ambience is amazing and we both had salmon which was out of this world when the check came we had a question about the two Mocktails- she order two soda waters with lemon and was charged 10$ a drink. Meanwhile I ordered 1 Tito's and soda and the price was the same- later I just ordered a soda water and the price was 3.50. So we were confused. Drinks with alcohol are the same as drinks with no alcohol but not the same as water. When we asked the manger stated it was at the bartenders discretion. So due to the inconsistencies and not being able to explain we won't be going back. It's a shame. However, my wife and I have been there many times and order the same bottle of white wine and each time the bottle is warm. Can't figure out why this is so. Unfortunately, I forgot to take photos of the entree. The shrimp was incredibly fresh and enormous - delicious. The halibut was a huge portion and I had smoked potatoes and asparagus to accompany it. Since Im gluten free and dairy free they were able to accommodate all dishes. For the most part, all of the dishes I ordered were already gluten free and diary free anyway, except the halibut normally is in a buttery sauce. They provided me with a lemon garlic aioli that was delicious. I added it to the potatoes as well. I ordered the tequila cocktails. Unfortunately, I don't remember the names of the cocktails. Upon arrival the parking was a challenge. Once inside Ambiance was elegant. We went for during the later hours, so there wasn't any views to enjoy. The service was great, we were just there for apps and drinks since our dinner reservations elsewhere were later. We got drinks, clam chowder, Brussels sprouts, tomato salad, and a few others. Chowder was excellent, wasn't heavy and creamy. Clams were fresh and flavorful. Brussels sprouts and cooked perfectly and wasn't a pleasant surprise for flavor.
