There was a little hype before this place opened up... a New York chef venturing to the midwest to open a Sushi Place. So we decided to do a late lunch on their "Opening Day".... and just like any other establishments, they weren't immune to the "working out the kinks" on the first day of their business. There was some waiting involved but I'll cut them some slack for now. Located in Bellevue, the renovated place looks great with a littler modern look for their theme. Tables and booths as well as a bar sets a nice layout on this previous pizza joint. We ordered from their lunch specials menu. A 5 pc Bento box (Sashimi) and some rolls. Everything was amazingly great! The Sashimi was really good, and the rolls were flavorful. We definitely will be coming back to try out the other items in the menu, but might wait just a little bit until they get settled and a have their full staff. read more

Solid choice for sushi. We had five different rolls and enjoyed them all. Fittingly given the way this crazy family rolls, the Las Vegas roll was a particular favorite. It may be the first time our family has eaten every single piece at a sushi restaurant! Service was brisk yet quite friendly. Appetizers were so-so, prices were reasonable, and decor was basic. I adore this place. My children and I have eaten some absolutley fantastic things here. This visit was picture-less but no less delicious. Between 6 of us, crab Rangoon, pork gyoza appetizers were a big hit! Crab Rangoon crispy and fresh sauce with a pretty shredded carrot garnish. Super tempura roll, honey chicken, combo lomein rounded out our order. Fresh, delish, but lowered one star due to strange food/items storage in the dining room, slow service, just not sparkely clean. Super great food! Waiters were fairly nice. My only complaint is the icy parking lot on the first side of the building. I almost fell and I got stuck twice. Two gentleman helped me out though. Great food! We ordered take-out. We got kung pao beef, Thai basil with beef, rainbow roll and some soups and appetizers. While unpacking back at our Air BnB, we noticed there was no rainbow roll. I called the restaurant and they got right on it. They delivered to our door and included a side of gyoza! Great customer service. My two favorites were the basis with beef and egg drop soup. Usually egg drop soup has a really thick consistency sometimes bordering on gelatinous. This wasn't so thick and it was delicious. Will definitely go back the next time we're in Omaha. read more

Generally good food but no ambiance. Unfortunately the last time I was there the Mongolian Beef was served medium cool and the accompanying Hot and sour soup barely warm. Among other appetizers we ordered calamari. Each calamari slice was about the size is a mason jar lid and it was like chewing on big rubber bands. The coating was good but the calamari was bad. My wife and I stopped in on a Saturday after a long hike. It was still early, around 4:20, but we really hadn't eaten all day so this was going to be our big meal. I was surprised that Umami already had a fair number of customers at this hour, as most restaurants are dead before 5. We were seated quickly and our drink orders were taken promptly, after our server had introduced himself. Looking over the menu, we decided to let the house do its thing, and ordered the Sushi and Sashimi for two. Hoping that the sushi chefs would make excellent choices is a bit of a gamble, but at Umami that bet paid off. We were served our miso soup and salads fairly quickly, and both were very tasty. After we'd finished those, our platter arrived in short order. It was beautiful! Our server took time to identify and describe each of the items, which was very helpful. Into the platter we dove, and were delighted with the flavors and quality of all of the preparations. The sushi and sashimi were fantastic, and the rolls were very good; I liked how Umami dresses up a standard roll with a little extra crunch to add some interesting texture. After we'd finished, there was unfortunately no room for dessert, but there were certainly no leftovers either. Umami really wowed us with its outstanding food. Apparently sushi is their thing, and not anything else. I had the Thai Curry, which was an unexpected saucy, and sweet dish. My wife had a honey chicken dish that I would equate to a sweet donut. Both dishes were bland and there was nothing savory about them. The curry was so unappetizing that I requested something different, which is very rare for me to do. The kind waiter went to inquire on options and instead of a manager discussing with me, the waiter came back and said there's nothing he could do and sorry. I literally paid full price for a dish I couldn't even stomach. We gave the waiter a tip, because it wasn't his fault that the meal was just not good. Perhaps some of the food is good, but too risky based on our experience and the rigid management to go back or suggest to others. Too bad because we don't have many options in Bellevue. read more

Fish is good for the area, Midwest isn't the best location for seafood. With that at the forefront the uramaki (roll with rice on outside) or maki sushi (seaweed on outside) is the go to and if you do want sashimi or nigiri stick to salmon and tuna as those were the freshest. I had the pleasure of having lunch with my mother recently at Umami. Not only was the food delicious, the atmosphere was so pleasant and service fantastic! We ordered General's chicken and Shrimp Lo Mein with a glass of wine. The servings were more than enough and very reasonably priced. The restaurant is clean and although it was packed with the lunch crowd, we did not have to wait more than a minute or two to be seated. If you are a sushi lover, you'll LOVE Umami. If you don't care for sushi, no worries - there are plenty of other delicious options. This earned an A+ from us and we will definately be returning! read more

My expectations were a lot higher seeing some of the reviews and you know what high expectations can lead to, big let downs. I would say I have a pretty good sense of quality sushi from living in CA for 6 years and this sushi really didn't live up to the hype. Starting off, we got the soy garlic edamame and they looked nothing like the picture. They turned a somewhat healthy snack into a really oily garlic mess. They lacked the saltiness I had imagined going into it. We also had the crab rangoon which was actually pretty delightful, you could actually see and taste the imitation crab inside so that was nice! My wife and I agreed, the best part of the meal was the miso soup and seaweed salad. From there we were just meh about all the rolls we got and the sashimi was kind of a disgrace including a shrimp and a chunk of imitation seafood among the sliced meats. I like my sushi to be cold with a firm texture and this was under par on both. The rolls were good but lacked character and size, kind of bland in the taste realm. Bellevue is kind of limited I guess so if you don't want to drive to Omaha this could be a place to settle on since the drinks were decent pours and the cold large Sapporo comes with a nice pilsner glass. Since we live in Omaha I think we'll stay close to home for Hiro 88's Sunday Happy Hour and Sushi Japan's decent portions of fresh fish. Busy place so something they do must be good. So yummy and such a great edition to Bellevue! I went here for dinner with my mom who loves Asian cuisine. We ordered the soy garlic edamame and the pork gyoza for appetizers. My mom loved the gyoza. Next we ordered the California roll which I thought was great. Very fresh tasting and not too large around. Perfectly bite sized! We also ordered entrees so that we would have leftovers to take home. I got the chicken pad thai...my go to when trying a new Asian restaurant. My mom ordered the tempura vegetables which she was super excited about. She said that she hasn't been able to get tempura anything since she lived in a Okinawa as a teenager. She was superKim impressed and so was I. We each ordered a drink or two which were also great. A few words of caution - Get a reservation, get a reservation, get a reservation. This restaurant seems to always be busy and even with a reservation we will had to sit at the bar instead of a table because it was just so busy. The second time I ordered almost the entire sushi menu ... the selection of fish and sea creatures is great and so was the bill. Our first time ordering from them today. I ordered tamago sushi. I did not receive tamago sushi. I showed it to several friends who have lived in Japan and have eaten tons of sushi. Nobody knows what the heck I was served, but it was not what I ordered by any stretch of the imagination. It was also inedible. It tasted like cake slapped over rice. I tossed it. The fried rice was bland. We tossed it. My husband's yakisoba was soggy and disgusting. The food is very overpriced given its quality is so incredibly poor. It was an expensive lesson, but alas.
