    Curry Ramen
    Jen C.

Had dinner here and it's a small and unique spot. Ordered the curry ramen and it was very flavorful. A critique I have is that the broth is thicker than I'm used to and I wished they provided more broth as the ratio of noodles and broth was off. The crispy stuff they added also got soggy very quickly so I didn't eat much of it but I really enjoyed the egg, cucumber, beef and pickled stuff.

First Japanese curry restaurant in Jacksonville and the southeast! Small restaurant, maybe a dozen tables. Cute Anime themed restaurant. Sake beer and cocktail menu, curry plates, and fairly priced appetizers. Ramen, and Curry Ramen too! Staff happy, helpful, and kind. For those Coco ichi...they have a katsu curry plates that is very close per staff. We will try that next visit. Curry Ramen is so worth trying. Rich, bold, buttery flavor you will crave°°°

This is a very small restaurant but it's really good. The menu did confuse me a bit with how their specials are listed but overall we figured it out. The ramen broth had really good flavor and the chashu was cooked well. The service was on point for it being a one woman show. It's a spot we will work into our normal rotation.

Our friends recommend this place last month and we finally made it!! We were so impressed. This place is not very big but the friendly and efficient staff make it work. The kitchen is open and you can see in from the bar (where we sat). Listening to the communication back and forth lets me know this is a well oiled machine. We had gyoza to start. It was made to order. I had the curry tonk and my husband had the aka tonkotsu. Both were DELICIOUS. They don't overload the soup with extras. It simple and well done. They had some type of tourist cooking channel on their tv and it made us really want to try the fluffy pancakes. They taste like strawberry shortcake!! We are coming back for sure and can't wait to try the boa buns and sandos. I saw a lot of people ordering it those.

WOW! Absolutely phenomenal ramen. If you look at my reviews, you'll know I LOVE ramen. I will admit I've never been to Japan, but I have been to every top rated ramen shop along the east coast- from NYC, Philly, DC, NJ, CT, all the way down to South Florida. In San Francisco and LA as well. Umami Curry & Ramen is easily one of the best I've ever had. Specifically the ramen I ordered, which I have never seen before, was so unique and delicious I find myself wanting to go back to Jacksonville just for it. For me, charshu is really important. A good tender and marinated charshu is the staple of a phenomenal ramen. Umami Curry & Ramen was incredibly delicious. There's nothing more I can say other than to go try this restaurant! It's a gem and I'm looking forward to going back for the mouth watering ramen.

Was feeling a little hungry after my appointment so decided to pick up some takeout from here. The restaurant is small but cozy and the staff was extremely friendly. I felt really welcomed here! I ordered the following to go: Pork Katsu Curry Sando- 9/10: the pork was so crispy!!! Even after driving 35+ minutes home, it wasn't soggy. It had some cabbage and pickled veggies that added a nice, tart, contrast to cut through the heaviness of the curry. That curry sauce was magic!!! The curry is very reminiscent of Japanese curry and it took me back to Japan! I thoroughly enjoyed the sandwich and it devoured in less than 10 minutes! Keep in mind that came with a bun and wasn't in sando form. It was indeed very umami! Chicken Katsu Curry Bowl - 9/10: my husband had this and it was also very delicious. It came with pickled veggies on the side and rice. They packed the curry sauce on the side so the chicken doesn't get soggy (which we appreciated!). They gave us a great portion of curry and when we had some leftover rice, we used the leftover curry to make another meal! The chicken katsu was fried beautifully and the flavors were spot on! My husband enjoyed his meal very much! Takoyaki - 7/10: It was good but a bit too mushy on the inside. However, it was jam packed with lots of stuffing (octopus and cabbage) and the flavor was good! It was topped with bonito flakes and takoyaki sauce and mayo! I wish it had the beni shoga (Japanese pickled ginger) and anori flakes (seaweed flakes) on top! It would have elevated the flavors a bit more! The takoyaki was sitting on a bed of cabbage and that added a nice crisp, freshness on the palette. Pork Belly Bao - 8/10: It came with three decently sized baos that had pork belly, cabbage, and pickled veggies. The pork belly was super tender and melted in our mouths. The braise on it was flavorful and we loved the addition of the cabbage and pickled veggies. With any type of braised meats, adding a pickled element or some veggies helps cut through the fattiness of the protein. Especially if it's pork belly. Some of the prices were on the pricier side but honestly, since the food is that good, I do not mind paying those prices. Everything we had was solid and we would absolutely come back again. This time we want to dine in as I loved seeing all the anime art on the walls! The restaurant felt super relaxed and comforting! Shoutout to the awesome waitress who ran after me after they forgot our pork katsu curry sando! She was the sweetest and their customer service definitely goes above and beyond! I only waited like 15-20 minutes for my takeout after ordering it! Definitely come try out Umami Curry, you won't be disappointed! They often have seasonal or limited menu items as well and I can't wait to try those!

Umami Curry & Ramen is one of the best ramen spots in Jax! As someone from Japan, I know this is a place you need to try. When you go inside, you'll see Japanese anime murals & Gachapon. It will feel like you're in a small Japanese restaurant. They actually make broth from scratch and braise beef for more than 12 hours! Their Tonkotsu broth is rich and full of flavor. Curry udon is also very good if you like curry. I've tried many ramen and curries from here, and you can't go wrong with anything! Oh, don't forget to try their fluffy Japanese pancakes. They're so good! Yes, there might be a wait, but you won't mind waiting for this delicious food.

They had me at Tamago Sando. Seeing Tamago Sando on the menu transported me back to the various Bento spots in Hawaii that I miss so dearly. Tamago Sando is right up there with Meat Jun if the topic was "my all-time favorite foods from Hawaii." Creamy egg sandwich seasoned with Japanese mayo. Simple...delicious. This isn't some chunky ordinary egg salad sandwich that you'd find at a Church social or picnic. The velvety smooth texture of the egg filling and the pillowy soft bread makes the Tamago Sando far more craveable than any other egg sandwich that I've had. In fact, if not for the Curry, I would have ordered 2. Speaking of which... The Pork Katsu Curry was an excellent choice for the main course. I'm a self-admitted spice wimp, so I ordered mild. The Pork was perfectly crisp and paired beautifully with the unctuous Egg, Curry sauce and Rice. The pickled veggies added the pop of freshness that really brought the dish together. All in all, this was a thoroughly enjoyable meal from start to finish. I had my eye on the dessert menu, but sadly I was way too stuffed to even make an attempt. No worries, I vow to conquer the Strawberry Cream Japanese Pancake on a visit in the very near future. A big hearty thanks goes out to Diana for your attentive service and answering my questions like a well-seasoned pro. Till next time, my fellow Yeeps...NO WORRY, KATSU CURRY!...and as always...SYOY!

Umami is the #1 ramen spot in Jacksonville!! They are located in a strip mall with most of the building uninhabited, but Umami is the star. The broth for the tonkatsu ramen is full of umami and simply orgasmic. The noodles are perfectly chewy/springy. The pork belly melts in your mouth! I could eat this every day. The edamame is seasoned with not just salt but other Japanese seasonings so extra tasty. The ebi or shrimp tempura is extra crispy and doesn't taste frozen like most other Japanese restaurants in Jax. All of the curry rice dishes are delicious. Diana is the owner and there on most days to take your order. She is great! The walls are decorated with a Hokusai mural on one side and Japanime art on the other. This place is a hidden gem in Mandarin and absolutely AMAZING!!!

Came for first time. I loved this place. Mt food was so good! My wife had brisket ramen and brisket was very good. Shoyu ramen was very good! I had a curry tinkatsu ramen and added spicy they brought to the table. So so good! Gyoza appetizers were so good we ordered extra. The Sapporo and Ichiban beer are favorites! Service was so good! Place is small very busy but didn't have to wait long. Place is clean. We will be back!

This is one of my favorite ramen spots to go to other than Karai. The owner cares about what he serves and you can tell by the dishes that come out. Tonkatsu curry ramen is my go to and still have to try the others. Ambience is cozy with anime wallpaper. Took my daughter for the first time the other day for her birthday and she loved it. Owner even gave her a present. Attentive staff and quick service.

Umami Curry & Japanese Ramen is an absolute gem in Jax. My wife and I came in hungry and left genuinely impressed. The service was excellent from start to finish, friendly, attentive, and welcoming without being overbearing. We started with edamame and gyoza, both perfectly prepared and full of flavor. For mains, I had the tonkotsu ramen and my wife had the curry ramen with chicken, and both were outstanding. The broth on each was rich, comforting, and clearly made with care. We also tried the Kamikaze drink, which was smooth and well balanced, and finished with the strawberry fluffy cake, which was light, fresh, and the perfect way to end the meal. Every single item we ordered was great. Amazing food, great service, fun atmosphere and a spot we'll definitely be coming back to.

Any thoughts of opening for lunch? I'll definitely come more often if there was a lunch service even if it's only for a few days a week, 🙏🏻 please!!!

They used for be open for lunch, but since Winn Dixie moved across the street and caused a decline in traffic at the plaza, it just wasn't financially stable to have a lunch & dinner staff.

It was super crispy, but the meat was still so juicy. And the sweet and creamy sauces just finished the perfect bite. The ramens were pretty solid too. The matcha broth was super creamy and light. And the tonkotsu was so flavorful, with really tender chashu and a perfectly soft boiled egg. Plus the noodles were a really good texture. The restaurant itself is really cute too. They also have a convenience store type of ramen station in the front, which I really want to try. As well as a little arcade game that you can play in the front while you wait to be seated. However, I was really not a fan of the service. It's nothing really against the servers because they were super nice, but they just seemed so frazzled. We arrived around an hour before closing, but it took forever for us to be seated, despite seeing a few empty tables around. By the time we were seated, we were told kitchen would be closing in two minutes, so we had to hurry and put in our orders. All of that was fine and I didn't mind. But what I did mind was that our waitress checked our order twice when we first have it. And she came back to our table within the next five minutes to check our orders again for a third time to make sure she had down what we wanted. I wanted the matcha ramen and was most looking forward to having some chashu and egg. So she confirmed my order three times that I wanted matcha ramen. But when it came out, she gave me the vegetable bowl. I knew the kitchen had closed at that point, so I just ate it, but I was really disappointed. (I did get to try a bite of my friends egg and chashu, which also didn't really help because it was so good and made me wish mine came with those even more.) When we were finished eating, it took forever for the checks to come out. This I also didn't mind that much, because the servers, again, looked really frazzled trying to close up. But at this point we had waited until well after their closing time, so part of me was hoping they could just close us out first and then finish closing down the place. I think we waited at least half an hour from when we first asked for the check (at which point we had already been waiting a while) to when we finally got our cards back. I did see they charged me for the vegetable version of the matcha ramen so it was whatever, but then also I was confused - so it wasn't a mix up in the kitchen, she rang it up as the vegetable one from the beginning! Even though I never mentioned it and she never said vegetable when confirming my order. It was a dollar less to get tofu instead of an egg and chashu which doesn't seem worth it. Writing this all out, I'm sorry to rant, because the food really was good. And looking at other reviews, it looks like the service is usually pretty good. But again, it was just disappointing. That being said, I am really hoping it was a one off thing because I would go again and try some other menu items too.

Without exaggeration, this was a life-changing ramen. The best ramen that I've had in my life!! The torched egg was genius and added a beautiful texture to the rich, and flavorful broth. The fried chicken thigh was a delicious protein and cooked so well. Honestly, every ingredient was crafted well and combined to make such a beautiful bowl. - Lychee Martini: What better way to toast to life, then with a martini! Instead I went with the pork fried dumplings and the Taiwanrse sausage. The dumplings were very average: not bad flavor but they had a flavor and were uniform in a way that suggested they came right out of a bag from the freezer. There are much better and fresher dumplings to be had in Jacksonville. The sausage, however, was quite good. It was taught, porky, and had notes of five spice & maybe cinnamon. It further reinforced my view that meat always tastes best when served on a stick! It helped bring in the final score two three stars, making up for poor service and mediocre dumplings.

The Gyoza were perfectly crispy Japanese fried chicken dumplings, and the Harumaki was a great addition too. Everything fried here is done with real skill, the crunch is always there and never overdone. If you love spice, the KakuKara Ramen is an absolute must. A rich, creamy sesame broth made from chicken and pork stock with Japanese hot sauce and red miso, it is spicy, deeply flavorful, and completely addictive. Loaded with pork belly kakuni, homemade pickled peppers, cabbage, cilantro, green onions, and sesame seeds on those perfect curly noodles, it is everything you hope ramen will be. If you prefer something milder, the Katsu Shio Ramen is a beautiful classic, a delicate Japanese sea salt and dashi seasoned chicken broth with shiitake mushrooms, katsu chicken, red and green onions, and the most wonderful onsen tamago custard egg that takes the whole bowl to another level!
