They source many different types of superior and exotic seafood types from different areas of the world and feature daily special offerings. I love that I can request the fatty belly portion of salmon and yellowtail sashimi and they often have fatty toro tuna. I love that they will flash fry the body portion along with the heads on sweet shrimp and fried prawn orders (I don't like raw shrimp). I love their exceptionally good ginger dressing and usually get an extra side portion of it! I love that they most often have sea urchin available (and often several types) that I like to enjoy with shredded daikon and shiso leaves! I love their shrimp and vegetable tempura! My Rolls were completely cold. I said something to our waitress and she argued with me saying that the Tempura fried rolls are never hot.... it comes out of the fryer? it should be hot. She then said "well do you want another one or" and didn't even apologize. She took my rolls away from the table and not even 3 minutes later they were back on the table. Now the inside of the roll was cooked. Meaning they refried the roll that I touched. It was pretty obvious that it wasn't a new roll because now the inside (salmon) was no longer raw it was cooked. Sad to say that I can't believe this is the original location that did so well they had the means to open another location. Well, we read great reviews on this restaurant while traveling to South Florida and unfortunately it was extremely expensive like Ruth Chris kind of expensive and our food took an hour to be prepared (while countless take out orders were processed) which To Me was very unacceptable and within several hours, I had excruciating stomach pains.. I had major stomach upset, body aches and chills and while it could've been a stomach bug, it was extremely close to the time we ate. I always order cooked sushi, but my husband had some raw fish and I suspect that may have been the culprit The server seems to have been there for many years. She was sort of dry humor and somewhat apologetic but still we paid a fortune to eat food and it caused us to come in very late for our event. I don't recommend this place if you're in a hurry ever. First, the Tuna Tataki was absolutely delicious - perfectly seared with just the right amount of punch from the ponzu. I stopped by today for my second try. It has been some time and I am happy to report that my experience here was much better. The sushi here was super fresh, tasty, and presentation was excellent. Despite a little weakness of the sushi rice I am very satisfied. Niki ordered the bulgogi. It came to the table sizzling and smelling so good. The presentation too was fabulous and the taste so good. My only issue with this dish is the meat was diced instead of cut into more friendly eating slices. Even some lettuce would have made this a better eating experience. All in all it was a beautiful and tasty dish. The kitchen was running real slow tonight. Actually drank three glasses of water before our entrees came out. Honestly, the place was busy but I feel that we waited a while for the sushi and unacceptably long for the bulgogi. I will be back again for more. Let's start in the order that we tried each item- starting with the calamari and then umami mushroom appetizers. You'd think that the feta cheese in the calamari wouldn't quite work with the calamari and sweet chili sauce. You, my friend, would be very wrong! The feta cheese provides that hint of saltiness that's I never knew my calamari beefed. The calamari are beautifully, lightly fried and tastes just so delicious. The umami mushrooms were my partners favorite part of the meal. The different mushrooms and the sauce they are sautéed in is just fabulous- who would've thought that a "simple" appetizer could be SO GOOD!? Moving on to the rolls: The spicy tuna crispy rice was delicious buuuuuut too spicy for my taste. The rice was perfectly crispy and there were generous portions of the spicy tuna. The bang dang was my partners favorite roll- the coconut shrimp and mango flavors go wonderfully and there is a generous portion of blue crab on top. My favorite was the new englander. The scallops with the lemon yuzu just goes so well together and the chili thread is such a nice touch that brings this whole roll together. The whole meal rang in at a little over $60- which is truly a magnificent price for not only the quantity but the sheer quality of the food. The ambiance is fantastic and the restaurant is social distancing customers very well- operating at less than 50% capacity to do so. We had phenomenal service and really have no complaints. This is one of the restaurants that whatever you order you know it'll be great. Their sale selection is pricey. I've only split a 200ml tiny can with a friend for $18z I thought it was gonna be a small bottle and we had a good laugh at the size of the can. It was good but at the higher price points, I'm less likely to buy sake for an average of $30+ not knowing enough about sake to know if I'll like it. Parties didn't want those seats or the proximity to other seating made them bit uncomfortable/impractical? If the restaurant was a foot or two wider it wouldn't bother people. Oh well, more optical illusion than actual inconvenience. Lian was our server and she was awesome. Genuinely interested in how our meal was. Attentive to refill our drinks. Boxed up our food to go and made a number of jokes throughout the evening. She did her job and was polite but you rarely see that attention to detail these days. PLEASE GIVE THIS WOMAN A RAISE!!! You can tell she enjoys her job and taking care of customers. Our party or four had a few beers and a Diet Coke. Edamame to share between the table and vegetarian sushi. A beef dish, a chicken dish, anD regular fish sushi. Everyone was extremely happy we took a chance on this restaurant. My parents have since added it to their regular spots for coworkers and family when visiting as well as date nights together. Do you want great sushi, a chic ambience, and quick service? Look no further than Umami! I came here with my family of 4, plus my mom. I got the crispy tuna roll, my wife got a veggie roll, and my mom got the tiger roll. Then we all shared a plate of chicken katsu, which we mainly got for the kids. Oh, and we had calamari as an appetizer, which was mostly for me because it was my birthday lol. The one thing that surprised me the most at Umami is how good their chicken katsu is. Most, and I mean every other place other than Umami, has REALLY DRY chicken katsu; that is not the case here. I am hesitant to get katsu anywhere because of the fear of being too dry, but I will gladly order it at Umami every time I visit! The sushi was all made really well, and not overly stuff with rice or anything. I am not a sushi expert, but I can notice too much rice vinegar, and I'm happy to say Umami is not noticeable at all. My family seemed to enjoy their rolls with no complaints. My roll's raw tuna tasted good, nothing off about it, so that's a win! Like I said, I'm not an expert, so I can't spot freshness fish quality like other people can (although I wish I could). The calamari is your standard fare for Japanese restaurants. Light breading and not tough at all. I would order calamari here again, because I just love squid! The staff was very attentive, and our drinks always stayed full. Umami is hands down the best sushi available in Melbourne. The staff is super friendly, the atmosphere is cozy and warm, and the food is consistent and delicious every time. We go a couple times a month, and although I typically stick to the BuriBuri Good roll because it's a nice light option, I've yet to have a roll I didn't enjoy. There's something for everyone - from fried rolls, to non-fish rolls. All good! Our other favorites are the Cajun salmon roll and the double spicy tuna roll.
