This review is for my hairstylist - Daniel. I've been getting my hair done with Daniel for the last 6 years and I have never looked back. I actually found him on yelp 6 years ago when they were still at the old location. Daniel is always upbeat, fun, and very creative. I always wanted a hairstylist that can listen to what my wants and needs are but yet is able to implement his own input and creativity. Needless to say, Daniel never disappoints. Since I've been with him for so long now, I just let him do his thing and my hair always came out flawless whether it's coloring, highlights, or a haircut. Took my 11-year-old daughter here yesterday and had a great experience. Eva cut my daughter's long hair into an absolutely adorable long-ish pixie so she could donate her hair to Children with Hair Loss. Eva was great and the style is perfect. My daughter was so happy. Eva took her time and talked with my daughter about what she wanted and was able to get us 10 inches of ponytail for us to donate when another stylist at a kids' salon told us there wasn't even the minimum 8 inches. I've been going to Umberto South for years for blow outs, solid color and cuts. My favorite stylist is Dina who is friendly and really good at coloring hair one solid color. She listens and does a good job. For a really good blow-out, I recommend Flora, Marta and Eva. Unfortunately, I've had some bad experiences with other stylists there. You might wonder why I see all 3 but it always depends on who is available given that I make my appointments very last minute. I usually get highlights and take their advice as far as my cut. You never feel rushed - he is happy to go slow until you reach the best length and style. I went here for consult because they said they use framesi color line from Italy. So I get there ask if they truly do use this color line receptionist say "Oh Yes"makes me go up a flight of stairs and an older man I guess it was Umberto(never introduces himself) as comes up he passes by my daughter which had her back turned to him he grabs the back of her hair which startles her and says nice hair and continued to ask her questions during my consult as he kept looking at her the whole time asking her and myself questions about (her) my daughter... She was not comfortable with his attention and would no answer his questions he was more interested in my daughter ..although he did confirm they use framesi and then said he is a stylist .".then why the hell am I talking to you!!! I thought. He sends one of his colorist Jeff.. I explain again I want to use framesi and made an appointment for 8:30 am next day and at the end of conversation Jeff says "you better come or I will hunt you down" which should of been an indication right there and the fact that my daughter expressed to me after we left she a bad feeling about this place don't get your hair done here she was right. So i show up next morning at 830am and as he was going to start he says he doesn't use framesi ...I said thats the only reason I came here and he started to get real defensive saying that rekin is just as good his attitude was rude and pissy... I sat there calm and just thought to myself what a bait and switch and who's paying for this not him ...How dare him speak to me (the customer)like this with such attitude ..so I blew a fuse and came back at him then says "oh i like that when you come back at me ""...GO FIGURE what a narcissist unprofessional jerk ...he then said he didn't have the framesi full color line("now you tell me this") and would just do my base with framesi today not the highlights and glaze that we had scheduled so he colors half my head and walks away me as we were still going back and forth..He never came back ...(I guess he really doesn't like it when you come back at him") the colorist next to his station takes over to finish my base and Jeff was never seen again until I was leaving ..he comes up to me with his hand and apologizes .. what a joke ..too late my friend ..bad business I'm not going to pay money to get yelled at..upset.. after you baited me..I'm the innocent one here..lets be honest .. The owner did not charge me... thats the least he could ...do he should of also taken some responsibility you don't bait and switch people... should of saw the signs..never again... read more

After not having gone here for a few years, I decided to go back for a haircut. My daughter was coming home from abroad for the first time in a year, and I wanted to look as good as possible. I got one of the worst haircuts I have ever had in my life. I showed a picture to the stylist, discussed the length several times and reviewed the simple three layers I wanted. The stylist agreed and indicated that is exactly what would be done. The cut ended up being longer on the sides and way too short in the back (it was supposed to be the same all the way around.) There was only one visible layer and when asked about that, I was told I needed it to be one length along the sides of my face. It is a truly bad haircut, and I am thankful I can just barely tie it back in a stubby ponytail until it grows out. If I had wanted a stylist who cut the back shorter than the front, didn't listen to what I wanted, and simply did what he wanted, I would have gone to Vidal Sasoon's. At least they are expert in cutting hair, even if they don't listen. I spent 70.00 plus a tip and cried off and on for a day after. When it grows out a bit, I'm going back to Maggie at Fantastic Sam's just a few blocks away off La Cienega so she can fix it--for almost half the price. Never again will I set foot in this salon. I notice that most of the all star reviews are for someone named Daniel. Well, I did not get Daniel. When I checked in the young woman was lovely and welcoming. Christopher was assigned to me. I had a photo that showed my old and preferred haircut clearly. I also explained that I don't blow dry with a brush very well so I like it choppy and I dry it with my fingers. Half way through the cut he blew it dry with a brush. I mentioned again that I don't use that method and how will that affect the cut. He finished cutting and left. I went to pay and found out the price has gone up at least $10 since I was there late last year. The woman was very nasty and said it changed three years ago. Lie. Then I thought perhaps it will look better after I wash it myself. It is much worse than I thought. How did this place get so many five star reviews?? I was beyond impressed after Daniel cut my hair for the first time. He is not pushy at all and always listens to what I want. I finally took the plunge a few weeks ago and realized I wanted a shorter, more stylish, cut and Daniel did not disappoint. He took off 6 inches at first which was a huge shock.
