I feel bad these days giving negative reviews because people Rely on the income, and this location the rent must be sky high, but honestly this place is awful. First warning should've been when I think of "Italian food" I don't think of Pittsburgh but that's neither here nor there. I'm from Brooklyn, so maybe im a snob. Idk. We were a party of 7. This was the only place that we called that would take a same day reservation. When we walked in the first thing that i noticed was the aroma. And not in a good way. In fact I immediately said to my sister "well that doesn't smell good." It's Saturday night at prime dinner time in tourist season and the restaurant is 2/3rds empty. Also, Not a good sign. Collectively we ordered fried calamari app (was ok) and it came out with our bread, some weird pasta and beans thing and tomato and cucumber and onions bathed in Italian dressing. The bread was good, so I'm going to venture a guess and say they buy it not make it. The sauce was very chunky, and heavy on basil. It actually looked like sauce from a jar. The tomatoes in the salad were good but it was literally a bath of Italian dressing. The main course was as follows, chicken parm (bland), rigatoni aka vodka, at first bite was ok, then the aftertaste hit. Eggplant parm (eat at your own risk), chicken Francese where the flour coating just slid right off the chicken. That's kinda the best part about francese. The coating on the chicken. There was none. It was in the bottom of the bowl which was also an oily mess. Finally was the lowlight the veal Marsala. I've never seen Marsala sauce that was weird rust colored, thin and oily. 3 bites, done. Was inedible. The family style angel hair had that same lumpy tomato sauce that came with the calamari which was just laddled on top so that the pasta under it had no sauce sticking to it, it was just plain pasta and the way it was heaped into the bowl you couldn't even mix it. Umberto's is a family tradition when vacationing in NMB. There is usually so much food you really have to pace yourself. You start with any appetizers -- the calamari are highly recommended. Then the amazing bread. Get the roasted garlic to go with this. Then the "beans and greens". Then the tomato and cucumber salad. THEN the Angel hair pasta. All before your entree comes. Tourist trap, the food is par at best! I don't think I've ever been in an Italian restaurant that didn't have pizza! The bread was straight out of a plastic bag, they didn't have salad but they did have tomato, cucumber, and onion salad. The tomatoes were very tasty and the onions were fine but the cucumber had a funky aftertaste. The chicken parm was avg. at best. Service was fine. It was pretty loud, but that didn't matter specially if the food is good. To be fair I'm sure most places there are tourist traps. read more

My golf trip buddies love this place. This time we had the Italian Feast which was excellent. There were about 10 different items including the bread with garlic, olive oil and Parmesan, cucumber and tomato salad, calamari, fried cheese and stuffed peppers. This was followed by Angel Hair Pasta, sausage and Italian sausage, a pork chop that was delicious and the size of meat that ripped over Fred Flintstones car and finally chicken cacciatore. We were visiting while on vacation and found this spot. There were seven of us during the dinner rush, and we were seated right away, although at two adjacent booths, which was fine. The service was very good. We had multiple people attending to us, ensuring prompt service. All were very friendly and personable. All meals include bread, mixed beans, and a tomato and cucumber salad. All were delicious. Everyone enjoyed what they ordered. I was down in South Carolina with family and friends who are regulars here, and Umberto's is one of our favorite spots! Ambiance: Classy/casual Italian dinner spot on the boardwalk. Reservations were made months in advance and highly recommended. Thought I overheard wait times of around 2 hours for arriving groups without reservations. I also did come with a party of 16. The family I was with are HUGE Pittsburg Steelers fans, and Umberto's is a Steers haven for anyone vacationing in the area. Part of the classy/casual ambiance is justified because you will find well dressed vacation goers seated alongside Steeler Jerseys. Parking is usually tight and could be a little far or tough to find due to the boardwalk crowd and all the shops nearby. Price Point: I didn't exactly see the final cost, but based on the menu prices and the quality/quantity of food I'd say it was excellent and above par! For anyone who hasn't been, you'll see in many of the reviews and pictures that they serve family style appetizers prior to the main course (Bread, Bean Salad, Tomato Salad, Pasta). All is included in the meal for the party. It's all delicious, and it's all very well prepared. They also offer more if you finish. Pros: The family style dishes and main course came out in a timely manner, everyone on staff was friendly, and it's lighthearted atmosphere made it very welcoming to come back with friends after a year! I got the grouper special and it was phenomenal. The steaks that some other members of my party got were cooked to their preference. They always make sure you are served drinks and additional appetizers while waiting for the main course. Cons: The seating area can get a little tight. Not a problem for me, and we were a large party in the dining room among other large parties, but maybe something to consider depending on the group. I also don't recall seeing a drink menu, although I could have missed it. Overall: A top notch spot for anyone in Myrtle Beach, highly recommend spending time here and shopping around at the boardwalk. Looking forward to my next trip! read more

A no fuss Italian joint! Yes the ambiance is outdated, but don't fix what isn't broken right? Staff was doting. No issues with a 30 person reservation. Food is always good, but you need to pace yourself. This is a marathon not a sprint. You need stretchy pants or something you can unbutton. Veal Antonio - loved it! Veal Diablo - pretty good but the pepper will light your ass on fire Chicken Parmesan - perfection! Lobster ravioli - delicious but needed less sauce Mussels and spaghetti - too much oil but yummy! Each of these dishes came with cucumber and tomato salad (so fresh, easy, and good), angel hair pasta and sauce, and beans (yes beans - they are too good...it doesn't make sense). We order 85 appetizers (basically). Fried mozzarella is a wheel of cheese. What could be bad about that. Calamari was mostly breading but still okay. Sausage and peppers are delicious. Upon entering Umberto's about twenty minutes before our reservation, we were swiftly seated, a high chair having already been placed at our table for the infant in tow. Our waitress was a bubbly twenty something young lady who was polite and attentive beyond hope, our water glasses didn't have a chance to be empty with her on duty! The service gets a resounding five stars! I would give a higher mark if it were possible. Now the food... let this Yelper give you a solid piece of advice my friend, come hungry and with a loose pair of pants! The food pours out like water and is delicious beyond words. Our first course was a delectable 'beans and greens' white beans stewed with Swiss chard and tomatoes in a delectable garlic based broth, served alongside it was a heaping basket of warm bread with fresh butter. The beans and bread made me want to commit to a scene reminiscent of the one in "They call me Trinity" but I had to control myself, as there was much more yet to come. Our next course, ordered, was a bowl of fried calamari with a hearty chunky tomato sauce. My friend I have eaten in Italian restaurants all over the states of New York and New Jersey and this calamari was honestly finer than any I have eaten before! Crisp and tender, thick chunks of delicious squid! This was followed by a salad of robust, meaty tomato wedges, crunchy red onion and cool sweet cucumber in a refreshing vinaigrette, it refreshed the palate and invigorated the appetite. Now we come to the pasta course, angel hair pasta served under a glorious scoop of the aforementioned tomato sauce, the sauce is vibrant and full of exciting flavors, a small kick of spice on the back of the tongue leaving you wanting more and more! Finally my friend, we come to my main course, the Chicken Antonio... what could I say to describe it? Exquisite... the chicken is juicy and tender, cooked not a moment too long, the prosciutto provolone stuffing wasn't tacky or a gimmick. Several slices of prosciutto and a thick meaty layer of cheese enticed the senses, the delicate white wine sauce a fragrant blanket, mushrooms tender and earthy rounding out the richness of the dish. If I were forced my friend, at gunpoint mind you, to make a single complaint about my experience at Umberto's... the potatoes in my chicken Antonio were undercooked on the inside.... But I just cut around it and ate the outside, which was delicious! The insides were a small matter hardly missed, as my stomach was and currently is as I write this review, full to bursting! In final, the ambiance is your classic Italian restuarant, a modern aesthetic, intimate, a bit tight in some places. But with a place this popular that is to be expected! I'll give the ambiance a 4 star review but at the end of the day, the food and the service outshine it by strides, Umberto's gets this New Yorker's two thumbs up of unabashed approval, I lament the fact I am leaving tomorrow for home, but the staff at Umberto's had better expect me again in a year's time... hungry for more! read more

Tonight my family and I went to dine at this establishment for my sisters 21st birthday. Not one time did myself or family feel welcomed. When i addressed the issue with the owner he acted as if it was normal behavior. But we All watched how she interacted with her other tables, and it was as if she was annoyed by our table. But the thing that got me the most was the fact that the server felt that it was okay to argue back with the customer. And in any restaurant business you don't do that whatsoever. The food was definitely not good at all and for them to call themselves an "UPSCALE" restaurant, there was ABSOLUTELY nothing upscale about it. I've had better service at other restaurants and the food is 10 times better. I will NEVER return to this establishment and i will not tell any of my friends and family to eat here. read more

Being and Italian from Boston and a very picky and hard to please Italian food person, I was totally taken back at the quality of food at Umbertos. We had a boneless stuffed chicken dish and Seafood over pasta in a white wine sauce. The server also brought out a side of pasta in red sauce and a fresh tomato and cucumber salad. I can't believe how badly my family and I were treated at this restaurant. The food was good, but the experience was absolutely ruined by the blatant disrespect we encountered. We were soooo excited to wait for a table and eat here. We even planned an entire night of our vacation around coming to this place, so you can imagine how deeply disappointing this experience was. My 85-year-old grandfather, who gets cold easily, kindly asked the staff if they could turn off the fan above him. Instead of offering any understanding or empathy, we overheard the workers laughing and making disgusting comments about him, saying things like, "Why don't you put a f*cking sweater on, old man," with the owner joining in the mockery. Yes, it was a hot summer day, but instead of laughing at an elderly man who asked politely, they could've handled the situation with some basic respect. A simple, "I'm sorry, sir, we have to leave the ceiling fans on," would have sufficed. Instead, they chose to belittle him and ignore our concerns entirely. When we brought this to their attention, the waitress, who had overheard everything, didn't apologize or show any empathy. She asked what was wrong, and when we explained, she casually said, "Oh, it's fine. He wanted the fan off," as if to brush off the entire situation and make it seem like we were overreacting. There was no acknowledgment of the hurtful comments or the fact that my grandfather, who we're on vacation with (and could possibly be on one of our last vacations with him), was being disrespected in such a public way. To make matters worse, when we called the owner/manager(?) out on his exact comments and behavior, he tried to lie and claim he had no idea what we were talking about. When we reminded him that he was the one laughing and engaging in the rude remarks, he acted completely oblivious, as if the situation had never happened. It was infuriating to see him try to dismiss his own actions with such blatant dishonesty. We were publicly embarrassed, paying over $400 for a meal, and their response to the entire situation? "Sorry, it's hot." No apology, no attempt to make things right--just an excuse for their appalling behavior. We won't be coming back, and I can't in good conscience recommend this place to anyone. There were three clean plates after dinner and we really enjoyed the tomatoes and cucumbers and beans and greens that came out with our bread. A super fun and different kind of Italian restaurant! We have been to Umberto's couple years ago, and we decided to go back this and make a reservation for 11. We might have had to wait 5 minutes before being sat. Our waitress Macon was wonderful and super attentive. I apologize for some of my pictures...with 11 hungry people it is hard to grab a pic before the plate is taken. The table gets to share bread, that was so fresh, with butter, beans and greens, salad, and angel hair. All of the sharable plates for the table were great and non stop. I got the chicken parmigiana and my husband got the combo of veal and eggplant parmigiana. My chicken was pounded so thin, and the breading and sauce were true Italian tastes. We are excited to go back, but we will always try to get reservations because of the long line and desire by everyone wanting to eat here. read more

The restaurant in general looks a little worn with light fixtures popping out of tbe ceiling and condensation dripping from the AC vents. The food was hit and miss. The one guarantee is that you will not leave hungry. This is a multi-course experience that includes beans and greens, a tomato cucumber salad and a bowl of angel hair pasta prior to the main course. We really enjoyed the beans. Our entrees were just ok. I ordered the veal Umberto, which was a little on the tough side. My wife had the chicken Antonio, which was a little on the dry side. It wasn't awful, but on par with what you might get at a typical Italian chain restaurant. Pros: family owned local businesses. The worst Italian restaurant!!!! They really need to update or work on the cleanliness. My friend ordered the lasagna and I ordered the prosciutto stuffed chicken. The meat in her lasagne was not fully cooked, as a chunk of meat or her plate was raw. A waiter which was not ours, took the plate back to the kitchen. Our waiter nor the manager ever came over to address the issue. Our waiter was quick to bring a bill not ever mentioning the uncooked meat from the lasagne. Ate at Umberto's last night. My first time and after seeing it is Pittsburgh style what could a native yinzer do but go? Upon entry you are warmly greeted. On your way to your table there is a wall up front with great Pittsburgh sports memorabilia. You get seated and here is where the fun begins. It was like being transported to some real Italian restaurant somewhere in Italy perhaps? No but close as the intention is Pittsburgh and these guys and gals deliver The place reminds me of a restaurant you would find in the Strip District or even Mt. Washington. The Pasta Fajole spot on! Artichoke Francais is to die for! The sauce in it alone should be bottled and sold as well as the Italian dressing on the salad! Now comes the main course Bravo Franco for two. If it was named after #32 then it delivered as it has 2 huge succulent pork chops and an awesome steak. Plenty for two. Again as the other menu items the sauce sings with the peppers onion mushrooms! Our sever was the best! And plates were well presented. All in all fantastic experience. This will be my regular stop in North Myrtle Beach every time.
