Well I just wasted 1 hour of drive time back and forth. I wasted gas and mileage. I am expecting and asked for a Philly roll with cooked salmon not smoked. When pregnant you can't have cold smoked salmon. I told the lady on the phone 3 times, it has to be cooked salmon. I got my order home and it was cold smoked! Instead of offering to remake and refund or something like that, she gave me my $14 back and was arguing with me that when pregnant you can eat smoked salmon. I work in healthcare, sorry but she's wrong and that's rude to argue with your customer. My family wont be coming here anymore. Very rude service. read more

The service was impeccable as they let me sit down immediately and was patient with me taking my order. I ordered their chirashi bowl and everything was really fresh! I was visiting friends in Pleasanton and we ordered takeout from Ume. OMG - the food was divine!! I had their house salad, which had the most delicious dressing. Their california roll was so fresh and creamy. I had a roll with shrimp tempura inside, and fresh salmon and lemon on top that was the perfect combination of flavors. I loved their vegetable gyoza. I've overlooked this little gem of a place for a good number of years. It's kinda hidden and tucked away in the corner of a strip mall that has a Chili's (gross). First off, this place is actually pretty big. If you have a decent sized party, then consider this place. They have very large booths and it looks like you can draw the curtains if you need even more privacy. For better or for worse, this place has never been crowded when we come. We met the owner, who is super super nice. She helps out where she can. Food is pretty decent. Not the best, but far from the worst. Usually get some kind of nigiri mix and a roll or two, and the kiddos get a chicken katsu. Fish is generally fresh and the rolls are a mix of standard fare and some fushion stuff. I look over at the sushi bar and always there is an older Japanese gent rolling away at the sushi. Always a great sign. Food: 2/5 Ordered hot tea and the tea was basically just hot water, not brewed well, and the tea cups smelled like bleach. We all ordered bentos and all the meats were tough, dry, tasted odd. There were a few other rolls and they were decent. Ambience: 1/5 Place smelled like sulfur or some kind of gas, ruined the entire experience. Tables and chairs were on the brink of breaking and some creak. It is well lit and the furniture isn't badly arranged. Service: 4/5 We were the only ones in the restaurant when we went at 7pm, with that said, staff were fast to get to us and checked in often. Ume Is located in a plaza where there is ample parking. When you walk in the door you are greeted by their many workers. I went on a weekday and it was not too busy. They are open for indoor dining but I ordered to go through the phone. They were very quick with my order. It took about 15 minutes and the food was ready from the time I called them. This place reminds me of one of my favorite sushi places in the Southbay, kakuna. It's not as good as Kakuna but it hits the spot when I'm looking for large, tasty, and decent quality rolls. Not only are they large, tasty and of decent quality but it is also very well priced for the amount of food. These are all the things I look for when I'm looking for sushi rolls. These things are very hard to come by. I've only been to Ume 3 times and currently my favorite things to get are: the seaweed salad, and my favorite roll is the Pandora roll. It does not have any rice but the flavor combination of the salmon, cucumbers, and the avocado go very well together. It's refreshing and delicious. I've also gotten the mango roll, rainbow roll, and ume queen roll. All these rolls are decent, and if you read the ingredients and those are the things that you like and rolls I would recommend you try them. read more

Pretty disappointed as Ume has been a long time local restaurant. I didn't eat much sushi but primarily on bentos. Pork katsu has to be one of worst I have eaten, pork was slim, overcooked, dried and flavorless (of course with aforementioned problems). Potstickers were also dried, overcooked. These two are staple Japanese food. Are we eating fried pork skin or pork chops? Then the simple California rolls was also dried. I am at a loss what to eat, oh salad is ok. The ambience of the resturant probably not modern or trendy for some foodies. Lighting of the resturant may not be the most optimistic for some customers' Instagram quality food photos. However, I'd been many different Sushi resturants. Heck, my in law's owned a traditional Japanese Sushi bar for over four decades. I think this place is a gem. Fish quality is excellent. Friendly welcome. Attentive staff. It was late and my daughter and I just wanted something quick but good. Our friends come here a lot so we knew it would be good. Glad they were open until 9:30pm on a weeknight. Immediately we were served a small dish of edamame and asked for our drink orders. We both ordered bento boxes. She ordered the Veggie Bento with Agedashi Tofu and Vegetable Tempura. I got the Bento Box with Yakiniku and Salmon Teriyaki. The salad and miso soup came out fast. I love the dressing on the salad. I could eat just that all day! I can't speak for my daughter's bento box except that it looked good and she ate most of it. The tofu was firm which is great, so that it doesn't fall apart when you dip it in the sauce. My salmon teriyaki was cooked well. Perfect portion size (2 pieces). I love how it has a little bit of skin underneath. Great flavor, and not drowning in teriyaki sauce. The Yakiniku was also good. I wish it had more veggies though. But the flavor was good and the portion size is a good. I couldn't eat everything so I have enough for a meal the next day. When you get you bill, a plate of artistically cut pineapple shows up on the table with toothpicks. I love this! Perfect end to a delicious meal. read more

Came in on a Good Friday. Only 1 food server and 1 sushi chef. The tables were not cleaned after customers leave. The one food server only cleaned a table when a new customer arrived. Took a while to get our order- 2 items of sushi roll. We were expecting our order to come really late since only 1 sushi chef. However, our first roll came about 3mins after we ordered, the other one within 2 mins of the first one. I had the timer on in my fon that's why I know. The sushi was very bland. Not much flavor and didn't taste fresh. I'm guessing they had it pre-made that's why it came fast despite being short on sushi chef. I get that they are short staffed, but the quality of sushi rolls do not come close to Sozo's. Sad Sozo's is closed due to renovations. Never going back to UME. read more

We get to the Bay Area about every two years, and as often as we can, we stop in at Ume Sushi. We just had an early dinner there tonight (late September, 2021) after a long day hiking on Mount Diablo, nearby. We were greeted warmly by the hostess and head sushi chef (I think they are the owners), offered our choice of tables, and quickly got our beverages (tea, water, and a plum wine). This was followed by a Super Rainbow Roll, a Samurai Roll, and a Tako (octopus) salad. The portions were very generous, the sushi was delicious (the rolls were served with a little pile of tabiko in addition to the wasabi and ginger). Yum! We heard similar expressions of appreciation from the other diners (three or four other parties by the time we finished). Both the hostess and the head sushi chef thanked us for coming, wished us a pleasant evening, and hoped to see us again soon. What a great dining experience! read more

This has been our go to sushi spot for years. We've done many family dinners, birthday celebrations and other celebrations here pre pandemic. During the pandemic, we had the only option to get takeout. We did this not only for the food, but to also support the local business during these trying times. With the restrictions finally changing in a positive direction, we finally have been able to dine-in after over 1yr. We still get the same friendly staff and service. I had called and told them we were coming in 10min. We arrived and our booth was set up with menus ready for us. Fresh fish and many varieties of sushi rolls. The bento boxes with tonkatsu came with a generous portion of tonkatsu. The tonkatsu was fried perfectly and the meat was still tender and juicy. The sashimi appetizer had fresh thick cut pieces of selected Tuna and Salmon. So glad our sushi spot has survived so far. The roll had no soy sauce included and the house salad leaves were so big I had to get a knife to make them smaller and easier to eat. California Roll $6.95 (8 Pcs), House Salad $3.50 I ordered the 2 item Bento, I ordered Short Ribs (4 small pieces) and Tuna Sashimi(4 thick slices). I had to pay extra for both $1.50 (ribs) and $1.50 (Tuna Sashimi). Total Bento $23.95. Definitely not worth the cost. Once again no soy sauce & no wasabi or ginger.
