Hungry and with less than 30 minutes to spare I walked in to Ume Sushi. I explained to the lady my situation and she assured me food will be ready in no time - I was not disappointed! The spicy grilled pork chop came out perfectly seasoned and just the right food temperature. I enjoyed the quiet and personal attention I got. I was the only guest, afterall it was close to 3 pm. Me and my friend stopped in here for the first time and it did not disappoint! The food was so good and everything tasted super fresh. Came in with my daughter. And we were starving. Cute place. Unfortunately we weren't ever acknowledged. We literally sat there for 20 min! When I'm assuming the owner, by her ordering people around and yucking it up with friends. We literally just stood there. my daughter wanted to leave after 8 min. I stood there like hello. Then a family of 4 walked in and they were immediately greeted and sat immediately. Handed menus! I guess unless you look like the owners or are regulars your money isn't wanted here! Thoroughly DISGUSTED! Unfortunately this doesn't allow for -0 stars! They lost a great tipper and possibly a regular customer. As my normal sushi spot closed recently. The owners retired. Tried this place because of the good yelp reviews and overall this is a place I would have to revisit because after the first view I'm torn. The great was the sashimi! It was fresh and delicious and had a very good flavor to it. I had the salmon, yellowtail and tuna and all were great! The not so good. I had I believe it's called fhe Dancing Queen role and roll was falling apart and the combination of the different ingredients didn't pare well. The ingredients altogether looked great and something similar to what I have eaten before, but something just didn't sit well with me. The service was a little slow too as it appears this is a mom and pop shop and only the sushi chef making the rolls and an older lady was serving and taking care of about 6 tables and one had a party of 7. So it was a bit slow. Overall like I said I would have to try this place again and hoping they have more servers and I would try a different roll and definitely have the sashimi as that was the best! What a hidden gem in the corner of Gateway Square- my favorite local sushi spot! Cute ambiance inside, lots of seating options, and they always play 80s music. We usually get the same server who's super kind, and the sushi chef always goes out of his way to say hi! So sweet. The rolls usually come out within 10 minutes and are always beautifully prepared. Usually stuffed to the brim, so sometimes they arrive a bit broken but not complaining! No skimping on the fish, and always very fresh. Ume Sushi is located in the Gateway Square Shopping Center. It was a bit confusing at first, as my navigation lead me to the back end of the restaurant. Parking is a bit hit or miss here, as it gets pretty busy here.I ordered ahead on the phone, so it was pretty quick - my order was ready within 15 minutes. I ordered their Sake Roll, which a bit pricey for what you get. It does come with 8 pieces, instead of 6 pieces, which sort of justifies the price a bit. The salmon was decent, it had a slight fishy taste to it, but overall was alright with a bit more soy sauce. read more

We ordered the beef sukiyaki and samurai roll. It was very delicious and big portion of everything. There was a lot of vegetables inside with great flavor. The samurai roll was a mix of tuna and salmon. The service was very nice! The sushi chefs greeted us right away when we walked in to get seated. They were very friendly and checked in on us to make sure everything was good. We will definitely be coming back soon. read more

It's been a while since we've come to Ume Sushi - but the ambience and service is pretty memorable. Definitely a small family owned business and how you feel when dining and leaving matters to the hosts. You will be served with a smile for sure. The food was pretty good and the options are what you would normally expect from a sushi house spot like theirs - from the rolls to the bento options. They definitely meet the standard of taste and the price point is what the general costs are of these times... I am not from the inner east bay, but stopped by this place (as a 2nd choice due to my first choice was too busy) and I have to say this place is da bomb for the price. All fish tasted fresh, and they had abalone sashimi which also was delicious. Recommend this place, especially for the value! Will be coming back for sure! read more

Excellent sushi and good portions. Miso soup is perfect. Not too rich or bland. I had the Oh, My God roll (favor burst) and hamachi hand roll (huge sashimi pieces), yesterday. I had to come back. Today, I had the Hae-Dup--Bap. More sashimi than rice. Yummy and healthy. I so glad I came to this place. I needed something different from Amakara (which I love too). This place isn't as fancy or loud. It's a family run establishment with good food and good seating arrangements and privacy on the booths. read more

Ume Sushi is a true hidden gem in Pleasanton. This is a recent find and was pleasantly surprised that they have quality sushi here and it is top-notch. I tried the Lambada roll and it was packed with flavor & freshness. The service was fast and it made it convenient place for lunch. It's not a huge place, so it feels personal and relaxed. My only upset is that they are so far away from us in San Mateo. :( My cousin lives in Pleasanton and recommended we try this place. They are in love with the hot buddy - so one night last weekend I decided it was time to give it a try. Oh it was so worth it. They ordered Gyoza and hot buddy, I ordered a teriyaki steak & california roll bento box. My hubby n I split gyoza and he had the Geysha & Valley Scallop - Everything was sooo scrumptious. The only thing I didnt like was the gyoza, they were not like potstickers, they are completely fried n crispy all around. Everything else was soooo great. Miso and salad so yummy. It was so good my hubby n I went to the restaurant on Wednesday - but I should have listened to the reviews...the service is sllloooowwwww. For someone to take our order and give us a drink took 20 mins and the restaurant was not packed. After that the service did pick up so it was redeemed. I had the same thing, but this time it came with this little fried mashed potato thing - LOVED it! Hubby had salmon teriyaki and a dragon roll. His salmon was HUGE, I mean 3 times the size of any other restaurant we went to, and it was cheaper, and cooked better than any other he had tried (his words not mine). Ume Sushi in Pleasanton is truly a hidden gem, and Chef Sean is nothing short of a culinary artist. I was treated to one of the most memorable omakase experiences I've ever had. From start to finish, the service was impeccable--attentive, warm, and perfectly timed. The staff made me feel cared for without ever being intrusive. Chef Sean went above and beyond, curating a custom omakase experience based on the seafood and textures I love. What impressed me most was how he crafted his own interpretations of traditional cuts and presentations--bringing creativity, balance, and bold flavor to every course. The Jamaica and escarole, the scallops, and especially the sweet red shrimp served with the fried head and fresh raw tail were out of this world. Every bite was thoughtful, delicate, and full of umami. The sake pairing? Absolutely spot on. Each pour complemented the dish it was served with, elevating the flavors without overpowering them. And yes--I fully admit that some of the photos show half-eaten plates... but that's only because I couldn't resist diving in before snapping a shot. Each dish was too exciting to wait. I can't speak for the food but I do want to speak on the heavy set Asian woman that works here. She told me her name was Young. She is extremely rude and has horrible customer service. Every time I go to this establishment to pick up orders for my food delivery company she gives me a hard time. I've seen her asking others for the name on the order and handing it over with no problem. When it comes to me she not only wants the name on the order but also demands to see the order on my phone and then proceeds to snatch the phone from my hand. This has happened on several occasions and I want people to be aware of this vile woman. I just tried to pick up an order, once again she tried to snatch my phone in an aggressive manner and when I told her not to do that she grabbed the food as if I was going to steal it. She is a disgusting person that is in the wrong line of work if that is the way she behaves with the public. I'm not sure what her issue is but if you are looking for good food and pleasant people DO NOT GO HERE! Young should be fired!!!!!! The lack of respect she has for others is despicable. read more

Ume Sushi is an excellent destination for casual dining. The service is welcoming and the sushi is always fresh. My usual starter is the House Salad, priced around $5. The salad is served with a pleasant miso-style dressing and features fresh, crunchy lettuce. The restaurant offers a wide selection of rolls. Among my favorites are: the Bad Boy Roll, which packs a decent spice punch and includes scallops and cucumbers inside, topped with spicy tuna, crunchy bits, and their House Special Sauce. The Super Crunch Roll is another delicious option, filled with crab, cucumber, and cooked shrimp, enhanced by hot sauce. It's topped off with spicy tuna and house sauce. Lastly, the Samurai Roll, filled with tuna, eel, cucumber, and crab meat, is a delight. It is crowned with salmon, avocado, fish eggs, and the house special sauce. However, there are a couple of minor downsides. The restaurant's furniture feels a bit outdated and the prices might seem slightly high. I had a wonderful experience here! The sushi quality was excellent--everything tasted incredibly fresh, and you can really tell they take care in selecting their ingredients. Each piece was well-balanced and beautifully prepared. The portion size was also perfect; it was just the right amount of food to leave feeling satisfied without being too heavy. What made the experience even better was the service. The staff were extremely kind, attentive, and welcoming from the moment we walked in. We came to UME Sushi with my daughter's basketball team after practice, and it was such a great experience! It was our first time there, and we immediately felt so welcomed. The staff and owner were genuinely happy to have us and made us feel right at home. The girls all ordered bento boxes and absolutely loved them. My daughter had the bento box with gyoza and said they were the best ever! The edamame was terrific, and all the sushi we ordered was flavorful with fresh-tasting fish. It's not always easy to find a place that's both kid-friendly and serves high-quality sushi, but UME Sushi nailed it. We'll definitely be back! read more

When you arrive they greet you with, hello that warm my heart. Then you are seated right away with a smile, and how can they help you with a great menu choices , I had the salmon which was cooked moist not dry teriyaki style. Needless to say I devoured it quickly I will return to this restaurant as soon as possible, and tell all my friends it's located in a small strip mall where you can shop after dinning. One of my favorite Japanese places!! The gf introduced me to this place who knows how long ago, and made me try a roll called "Crunchy Roll"..definitely has a kick to it so I was hesitant at first, but now every time we go there its a must that I order it!! Me and the gf go there so often that they know our order pretty much and they always know that I order a Crunchy Roll! Good sushi, good prices and the only reason for -1 star is when its a packed house, they tend to forget about us sometimes..but I would say that this is our go-to sushi spot. read more

I am a worthy judge of sushi and sushi/ japanese restaurants. I will never eat sushi anywhere else but at Ume sushi for the rest of my life. I have had $$$$ sushi and $ sushi. This place super reasonable and outstanding quality. If the service you had happened to be slower than you desired, its because they are always packed!this is what one desires above all in a sushi restaurant. Don't believe any bad reviews.. Funny story. I didn't realize the closed at 2. With the 5 days off I was running late on grabbing lunch. I guess I walked in at 1:55etc Anyway enjoyed the fresh sushi lunch special, which comes with miso soup and killer salad. The 80's music turned off and the kitchen staff closed shop and all came out enjoyed their lunch as well. Never have had that happen before. I would give it a 0 star if I can, they didn't put any utensil inside my order, and I live in a hotel, I call them and they said I can pick up my utensil, what wrong with these people so what's the point I order a delivery service, which charging me $15 service fee, and the lady who pick up my phone call is really mean, never suggest this restaurant and never ever going back again. read more

We waited for a table still...got seated then waited, waited, waited...10-15 minutes went by and still no server to take our orders or even a glass of water.
