Seating was absolutely full when we got there and we were lucky to snag a table as another couple left, so it seems like a popular Saturday morning spot. Several folks were working on laptops, and it seems like a kid-friendly place. The decor is a clean and modern/trendy industrial style, which works well for the space, and the windows provide nice daylight. Overall, a good coffee shop and I am really happy to see vegan pastry options! Fortunately, the baristas are super polite and work fast, keeping the long lines moving efficiently. The coffee menu and the retail bean selection are both impressive. I decided to try a dulce de leche coffee. While I was expecting a strong caramel profile of dulce de leche, the flavor turned out to be fairly subtle rather than prominent. It added a significant sweetness, but without knowing the order beforehand, identifying the exact flavor would have been tough. That said, the coffee itself was still refreshing The high quality of the coffee bean really shone through, delivering a rich aroma and the ideal caffeine kick for a breezy morning. Great coffee beans and fast service make it worth dropping in, even if the indoor seating situation is a bit tight.

They have a seasonal chai listed and 'can be made into a pumpkin chai by request.' There was confusion around it coming with a shot of espresso and because my stomach has been completely wrecked since I had it, I think the they must have put two shots into my drink. In the past 5 hours, I've used the restrooms 4 times and eventually projectile vomited. I don't drink coffee often and had this in ONE sitting. I realize this is a unique experience as I do not drink espresso often but wanted to share so you all understand how strong their coffee is and seeing as how its across SCU, it DOES make sense why so many people come here. The coffee and service have been excellent, until today. First, my coffee order was lukewarm- which is not a problem to complain, just correct-- to which I asked barista to warm. She said she couldn't warm but she would make a replacement. At that point I asked "You don't want this back, do you?" holding up my cup. She said she didn't if I wanted to keep drinking it. About 3 minutes after the interaction, while she was making the replacement another barista told me that if they were going to make a replacement coffee it was policy for customer to exchange the coffee that was not up to standard. I was surprised so I asked her to repeat that. After she did, I surrendered the coffee, without comment. I was with company so I did not make a point to argue. I thanked the barista for making the replacement and she said to avoid issues ask for the coffee to be "extra hot" at the register. Frankly, I have ordered coffee at this location many times when the coffee was too hot & I needed to request a coffee cup sleeve or 2nd cup to avoid discomfort. But I have no problem asking for extra hot coffee. The bigger issue is that when I returned to complain that I had never being asked to exchange or surrender a lukewarm or incorrect coffee in order to get the proper replacement and that it is not good business, I was told the policy was to let customer make the decision whether they wanted to give the coffee back-- unless it was the discretion of the barista that the customer just wanted more coffee. The implication was clear-- the barista didn't think the coffee was too cold but instead that I just wanted 2 cups to myself. This type of judgement is ridiculous. What I wanted was to wait for a hot cup of coffee. So what if I was drinking the cold cup while I waited. Was it that important for you to throw it away? My response given this new information was "I will never order here again, but I love Blue Bottle so I'll be going to Los Gatos, not that you (supervising barista) would care about losing me as a customer." Then the cashier spoke up and said, "I'm sorry the cup was not hot but it sounds like you like the cup at Los Gatos... " so I may as well go there, to paraphrase his full comment. That was unbelievable to hear. The supervising barista continued that the information would be shared with the manager "downstairs"-- and I asked their name, as well. Regardless to say, I always tip the bill. And it's not a cheap cup of coffee. But I've always felt it is 100% worth it. However now I'm left with my feeling that not only the initial response but also the treatment of my complaint has been disappointing. Because where I order coffee is an experience rather than simply a transaction and that I like to go where I am appreciated rather than incorrectly judged, I am more than disappointed. The impact of being disappointed by one of my favorite coffee shops is really a bummer that makes me want to not to buy Blue Bottle there-- or at any other cafe or through subscription (which I also pay for 3 freshly roasted bags per month).

Seating inside is not bad but also not super spacious, however there also several tables outside, with a nice grassy area nearby as well. The coffee shop doesn't have its own bathroom, but you can ask for a code to use the building's bathroom if needed. Given the parking situation, I probably won't be frequenting this place too much, but it is definitely worth a visit for a solid matcha latte as a treat every once in a while. I do want to find a chance to come back and get a chance at a pastry.

I decided to give this spot another shot, but this time, I switched things up and went for a fruity drink instead of my usual milk tea. Gotta say, I love that they hook students up with 15% off (just flash your ID). Lately, I've been living my mango coconut era, so of course, that's what I ordered, and, it did not disappoint. I even treated myself to a cup upgrade with the surprise bunny toy (because, why not). It was adorable. The woman who helped us was super sweet and even came to let us know our drinks were ready since we were chilling in the back. Major points for that. I visited Ume Santa Clara during their grand opening promotion and enjoyed their BOGO offer on December 1st. It was an excellent deal, though the free drink had to be the same type as the one purchased. We tried the grape green tea with tea jelly at 50% sugar, which was the perfect level of sweetness. The drink was refreshing, and the tea jelly added a fun, chewy texture similar to agar boba. Despite the long line, the service was impressively quick, making the overall experience enjoyable. The owners run the shop in colder weather, when people forget they offer special hot drinks, and hot teas, caffè lattes, and Vietnamese coffee. In the hotter months, the staff expands. The decor is subtle, the music never interferes with thought or speech, good amount of outside light. The tea mocktails are some of my favorites, usually juices or purées with green tea, sometimes jasmine green. I'd love some Moroccan tea, made with gunpowder green tea and fresh spearmint (peppermint is too strong), but it's not from Asia. Drink sizes are 16 (hot and cold) or 24 (cold only) oz. There's teaware, full leaf teas found on the menu (we love ancient black at home for iced tea), baked mochi treats, and tea jellies. We bring our own tea tumblers, more rigid than the plastic cups they use. There are often tea "barista" classes on weekends before they open for customers, should you like to learn something more exotic. On weekends and Mondays, they open at noon, otherwise it's 11am.

I can't imagine if people asked for regular ice, it would be 5 sips maximum. This is the typical Vietnamese style cafe where if you want no ice, they fill your drink less and if you ask for less ice, it's pretty much 90% ice. They have samples you can taste on the table which is really neat as it gives you a perspective on many flavors you have not yet tried. Side note, the fish tanks had fully green water. Not strong algae but just a deep green water like you see at Lake Cunningham. It was a bit unappetizing to look at. Water changes need to be changed for the sake of the fishes.

RANG Final…read moreThoughts: 4.50/5 Review for Rang. They have weekly matcha pop ups at Rose Tea Lounge. Original location is in Elk Grove, but they are here in San Jose area. Kind of hard to see and find them? given that there aren't really any signs posted outside. I perhaps wouldn't have known about it if my friend didn't tell me about it. Drink: Guava Matcha Einspanner: 4.5/5 This is their matcha with house-made guava puree at the bottom and topped with silky guava foam. Their foam is so nice and creamy. Felt very light and just thick enough. Silky consistency that mixed well with the drink. My friend noted that they make it fairly sweet, so I opted for the 25%. This was still quite sweet for me. Each component is sweet itself, so when you combine it, its mostly just sweet. No tartness to cut any of it. Perhaps the guava has something to do with that. Guava is a sweet fruit in general, so I seemed to expect as much. The matcha itself had a nice color to it. Very vibrant. Light bitterness. Lovely consistency overall. I like each component separately and I like them together when it's fully combined. Strawberry Matcha Einspanner: 4.5/5 This was my friends drink and I also really liked it. Had to try it for my review purposes. Per their Door Dash description, this is their matcha latte with their home-made strawberry puree and topped with velvety strawberry foam. There really wasn't much of a difference with this one and mine besides the fruit. His was slightly more tart than mine, which is something I like. Again, the drink itself leans more on the sweet side, so any sort of tartness would be nice to cut some of that. Matcha color is amazing. Nice and vibrant. Lovely silky consistency. I like the ratio of fruit flavor and matcha. Some places will make it just taste like milk, others have an imbalance of flavors. This one was just right for me. --------- Quality: Ceremonial Matcha and whisked to order We saw them whisk the matcha to order. Not really a display cooking kind of counter, but they do do all of that in the front where the cashiers are. You are able to watch if you so choose. I do like the matcha that they use, so it seems like a high quality one. That or it's because they aren't batching their matcha like other places. I understand that batching doesn't make it lower quality, but something about whisking it fresh is always better. Price: Average Will depend on the drink, but the prices are around $7 to $9. For our drinks, average around $8.25 per drink. Quite a common price range for a cup of matcha. This one was made well, so no complaints here. There was no upcharge for the oatmilk, which is always a plus for us. Service: Whisked matcha fresh No interactions today. We ordered directly on the kiosk and then just waited for our drinks to come out. Something that I like is that they whisk and make the matcha in front of us. Kind of hard to see, given my height and spot that we were standing, but they do whisk it in the front for us. Of note, they use this hand towel or cloth to wipe the bowls. Not sure how sanitation does with that, but I digress. Just an observation for today. Ambiance: Quaint Flower Café Vibes This place is giving very quaint flower café vibes. I would totally work here if I could work from home or if I needed to study. Space is incredibly spacious on the inside contrary to how the outside and plaza area is looking. Little dim lit inside, but that might be from the little lighting that's hitting through the windows given the angle and evening sun. Location/Parking: Small Plaza This place is like a pop-up/collaboration with Rose Tea Lounge. There's really no label for it outside of the storefront, but when you go into the café and on the kiosk, you can directly order from them. Kind of interesting how it works and I probably would have never seen it if my friend didn't bring me here. Location is not the best as it is right in a smaller plaza on the side of Story Road near the 101 freeway. At least they chose an area that is slightly less saturated. Vietnam Town is really close by and they really do have too much going on over there sometimes. Parking lot is also small, but it seems to work well with the smaller plaza size.
