I really liked this cafe! They have a small, but well crafted and unique drink menu. I love the fun drinks they have available! I tried the guava matcha and it was really good! The matcha on its own was slightly grassy for my taste, but mixed with the guava cream was really delicious. The flavor came through really well and was perfectly sweet. So far this is one of my favorite matchas in San Jose. They don't really have a food menu here, but there are some pastries that look pretty good. I can't vouch for how they taste however. The drinks came out super quickly and the servers were really sweet! I also really liked how we could take the drinks outside to the large seating area and enjoy the drinks, but there is also some indoor seating. Parking might be a little annoying but there are some spots out front of this location. Overall I really liked this spot and I definitely want to come back to try some of their other unique drinks!
I've been wanting to try Academic for the longest time but always found myself delaying my visit because of the comments I've heard about their parking lot lol. (They were right... the parking lot does suck!) If you're lucky enough to come at a quieter time and are able to snag a spot, I definitely think it'd be worth the visit! I ordered the guava matcha. As someone who isn't necessarily the biggest fan of matcha, I actually thought the drink was solid. The matcha had a lot of depth and the guava flavor was STRONG. My drink came out only a few minutes after I ordered; they're super quick to make drinks here, which is appreciated! They have a few seats inside the cafe and some outdoor seating if you plan on staying and hanging out. It is quite expensive here though - my matcha ended up being closer to $10. Not sure if I'd go out of my way to come again given how busy it typically gets but was definitely worth a try!
I've heard my friends raving about the Banana Matcha for a minute, so we decided to try! We went to their second location? Huge plus that it's right next to the park. It was super convenient if you're out walking your dogs like we were. I'm usually a fan of their Pandan, but I think I have a new favorite. The banana cream and Guava cream paired with matcha is a total game changer. You can tell they aren't using cheap ingredients; the matcha is high quality and the cream is actually thick and rich (hopefully its from real fruits haha) which makes such a difference for a latte. It's definitely on the pricier side( about $9 per drink if you want to substitute with other milk), but for the quality and the vibes, it's 100% worth it. Service was fast and great! Plenty seating indoor and outdoor but parking spaces were limited.
There's a small parking lot in the back; otherwise, you can find street parking about a block away and walk a few minutes. They offer both indoor and outdoor seating. Their pistachio specials from the last couple months were very good. However, it appears they've moved into guava season. I like this coffee shop, I've been coming here and especially the San Jose location for a long time. I appreciate consistency in my coffee shops and to be honest, academic seems to be losing the plot. Today I ordered one basic drink and one specialty- a vanilla latte and the guava matcha drink; both were just mid. The guava matcha is beautiful aesthetically, but the guava was way too overpowering, you couldn't taste the matcha. Also no oven to heat up the pastries. I still like their alum rock beans and purchase them regularly. They used to give you a drip coffee or espresso shot with purchase but I guess not anymore. Overall this spot appears to be leaning towards style over substance, but I hope they don't go that route. This review is a 3.5 but I rounded up because of the pistacho specials from the last couple months were very good.

Truly such a wonderful spot!! It's a smaller space, but there's decent amount of outdoor seating. Parking is meh, it's mostly street parking and very limited spots behind the building. The driveway feels illegal with how steep it is. Be careful if your car is low!
Went to Academic Coffee to celebrate our birthday morning since it's one of my cousin's favorite matcha spots, and honestly, it made for the perfect start to the day. The café itself is small but clean, with a simple and relaxed vibe. The staff seemed really nice, which made the experience feel easy and welcoming. We ordered the double matcha latte and a hojicha latte, and I can definitely see why this is one of my cousin's favorite spots. The matcha was strong, smooth, and well balanced, especially with the double scoop, giving it a richer flavor without being too bitter. The hojicha latte had a nice roasted, nutty taste that felt really comforting and not overly sweet. It's one of those places where you can tell they care about the quality of the tea, and it really shows in the drinks. Overall, it was a great way to start our birthday, and I'd definitely come back again for a solid matcha fix.

Prices felt fair for the quality you're getting. Stopped by Academic Coffee in downtown San Jose and it definitely lived up to the hype. Will definitely be back. 5/5 stars from me.

I wish that the pandan flavor came through a bit more strongly, but it was still sweet enough and balanced well with the espresso taste. The oat milk also added a nice creaminess without overpowering the drink. The drink was unique and stronger in coffee flavor. The area itself is cute, with seating available to work at or hang out with friends.
Love! Their parking lot is very small and usually full so parking is a bit difficult. I've tried their guava cream matcha, banana cream matcha, and hojicha. I personally am a fan of guava so I really enjoyed the guava cream flavor. Their banana cream is also very well made it had a strong flavor that paired well with the matcha without it tasting artificial. They have some seatings both inside and outside, which was really nice.
Used to be an absolute favorite and go to for the easy parking, great drinks, and proximity, but slowly have been trying other spots. I have always loved the banana matcha along with their seasonal drinks like the melon matcha or double matcha, but have felt like the coffee quality and dial can be inconsistent occasionally making the coffee sour. Understandably with the increase of demand the price has also gone up for the matcha to maintain quality, but because of that I have also started looking elsewhere. But I also have always appreciated how sweet and kind the staff is, always a wonderful interaction at the counter! I usually park the street over or around and walk through the community garden or apartments to reach Academic, but usually the parking lot itself is pretty full.
Absolutely obsessed with their banana matcha. Their banana cream is heavenly. Perfectly sweet and creamy enough to mix with the drink to sip on. Parking is kind of tricky here. There's like 7-8 parking spots in the lot, but the sign says you can only park for 30 minutes. I recommend parking on the street or across the street at bank of america.

Cute little coffee spot infront of valley fair! I love love their matcha it tastes so good and not overly sweet. It's small but there inside and outside seating if you want to study or do work. Ive gotten it with oat milk so my drink comes out to be 8.50. It's definitely on the pricier side. Also parking can be tricky since they have limited spots behind the shop. I would recommend parking on the street or crossing over from valley fair! read more
Street parking only. Small - cozy seating inside, they have seating outside as well (no tables) Not great for groups in my opinion. But the inside was actually pretty quiet. I ordered the Banana Matcha. The soft top with bread crumbs is the star. The matcha itself was okay but mixed with the top, it really pulled it together. The size is perfect. I had a 10 minute walk back to my hotel and still had half left. There was a few people ahead of me and I spent 10 minutes IF THAT waiting. So id say fast service. If im ever back in the area id try their lattes. Get there early if you want pastries. Its located on the corner of a busy street so try to turn into the closest side street. I tried to like this place because our son was hyping it but I didn't really like it. I guess I'm getting spoiled by stronger coffee. Very popular place so expect a long queue. Service is very good and lots of tables outside. read more

Academic has been in my coffee/matcha rotation for a while now and does not disappoint. Between their coffee or matcha, both are a great choice at either location. Service is always very kind, and I would say that this location is more for socializing than studying. read more

Matcha here is good quality and just lightly sweetened. The strawberry matcha is also good but sometimes can be tart or sweet, not always consistent so I usually just go for the regular matcha which is still good, earthy, and balanced. I like the little seating area in the back to be able to do work, there's a few seats, a couch, a table, and bookshelf which is cute. read more
Academic Coffee is one of the recurring places that frequent my TikTok so when an opportunity arose when my husband and I were in the area, I knew we had to stop by. I didn't realize the proximity to Valley Fair mall so I suspect that's why the line was so long on a Saturday afternoon, too. Limited spots on the street in front of the coffee shop, but there's parking in the nearby neighborhoods. I opted for their banana matcha and my husband got their vanilla latte. The banana cream on top of the matcha tasted delicious and went too quickly, but I get why it's hyped. The vanilla latte tasted good and not overly sweet. Overall, the ambiance is nice with both indoor and outdoor seating. The line can be long, but does go by pretty quick. read more

Drinks: 3.5/5 Service: 5/5 Ambience: 5/5 Academic Coffee has a nice vibe and service was great! Weather was perfect for outdoor seating. Matcha was more grassy than expected. The matcha strawberry latte tasted better after mixing. Matcha banana latte w/ almond milk was not bad. Probably liked it more than the strawberry one. Was not crazy about any of their coffees. Pandan latte had a nutty flavor but didn't taste like the typical pandan flavor. Pistakio cream latte was ok. Also couldn't appreciate the pistachio flavor. Didn't finish either of the coffees. Convenient place to grab a drink, but not sure if I would go out of my way to come back here. read more
We went to academic coffee and got the banana matcha latte and the guava matcha latte. Ive heard a lot about Academic coffee but today was the first time I went. Overall, it was just fine. The flavor was too milky and the cold foam to matcha latte was very off. The flavor of the guava cold foam also felt super artificial. I asked for light ice but since they were making 10 of these at the same time, they put full ice which quickly diluted the flavor. Overall, just ok, probably wouldn't return. read more
Academic Coffee has consistently been one of my favorite matcha spots, and I recommend them to my friends all the time. Their matcha is always delicious and perfectly balanced. I used to order the guava cream matcha latte every visit (still heartbroken that it was discontinued ), but now I always get the banana cream matcha latte, which is just as amazing. The interior of this location is so cozy and inviting, making it a great place to do any type of desk work or just relax with a drink. On top of that, the service has always been kind and welcoming, and I genuinely feel appreciated as a customer every time I go. If you're looking for a matcha spot with great drinks, a comfortable atmosphere, and friendly people, this place is definitely worth visiting. read more
First time trying Academic Coffee during the holidays. Went early at 10am on a weekend with no line. A line started forming around 10:30am. Location is on ground level on a main road so it might be easy to drive right past it. Couldn't figure out which lot was thr right lot to park at so we found street parking (which is very limited). Loved how they're right next to a beautiful open park, and across the street from Valley Fair Mall. Some indoor table and bench seating, but limited. Staff are friendly, and patient even with a forming line. I had an order of 5 drinks and 3 pastries (they don't offer warming up, not big deal for us). Took about 10 minutes for our drinks, wasn't too bad of a wait. I had the Iced Banana Matcha which was on my wishlist to try for some time. The banana creme is worth the hype, the matcha was good but the banana creme really stole the show. Their berry almond croissant was 5/5. Would get again. We also got the chocolate croissant and a curry-potato pastry. read more
Academic Coffee is an odd little spot. It's right in the driveway entrance to a parking garage for an apartment building, and the entrance is kinda tucked around the opposite side of the building from the parking. Also, beware if you have a car that's even remotely low to the ground. The entrance to the parking lot is extremely steep, and you can bottom out very easily. All that strangeness aside, the drinks here seem pretty solid. Although a bit expensive. I got the banana cream matcha latte and was pretty happy with it. The shop itself was pretty nice, but a little small. I was also a little bummed that they didn't have any sort of microwave or oven to quickly heat up their backed goods. Overall, not a bad spot. read more

The banana cream isn't too sweet and the latte pairs together perfectly with it. The parking is limited behind the store and on the street. There was a line out the door but once you order the wait isn't too bad (only about 3-5 minutes). Limited seating indoors but ample amount of chairs and tables outside! read more
Yay I am so glad that academic coffee opened up a location right across from Valley fair Mall. This location is newer, but they brought back the guava Matcha and everyone is very excited. It definitely lived up to the high. I recommend getting the one with the cold foam on top. I also tried the corn, scone and blueberry cinnamon muffin, which were nothing to write home about they were all right, but don't seem like anything special. There is limited parking behind the restaurant. We can also park anywhere on the street next to the shop. There's limited seating inside, but there's a lot of outdoor seating near a nice little community garden outside. read more
Great place to get coffee, from my last review I've found that there's parking in the residential street parking area in back, or you can park at VF (beyond their limited private parking and street parking, that is). Their matcha banana latte was recommended to me and I also saw a lot of people ordering it as well. It was the first time I saw a long line for this place, it was maybe a 5-10 minute wait. Last I was here I was trying to find space to do work/take a meeting call. To the nice and kind person standing behind me in line that I had asked for a recommendation, that recommended the Matcha Banana Latte, thank you very much! read more
Line is usually always out the door but I decided to stop by before some shopping at Valley Fair. The cashier was very knowledgeable about the menu and chatted with us about our plans for the weekend while ringing us up. I asked for less sweet for my latte and it was a good level. The other lattes without modifications tasted a bit too sweet. Cafe area had some seating with a very clean sleek look. Also some outdoor tables and benches to chat over coffee! read more
I enjoy academic very much, it is on my way to work and has always the best matcha drinks. My favorite which I hope they bring back the double melon matcha. Their strawberry matcha is also very good! I also enjoy hojicha a lot, and recently got their honicha with their kinako cream too. Today unfortunately one of their drinks was not as great to me, which was the hojicha with the citrus cream. I love anything lemony, but i think the acidity of the lemon with the mix of dairy and the drink, did not mix well. Both flavors separately are good, but a bit sad I couldn't continue to enjoy my drink as much. Besides this drink, all of their other items are great!! Always great service and great area. read more

I heard amazing things about Academic Coffee in SJ downtown that I was really excited to try! Hot Matcha oat latte - no latte art but the micro foam on top was delicious and smooth. Mild, smooth, and slightly nutty matcha latte. Could be stronger. Hojicha oat latte - unmemorable, weak and watered down, we didn't like this at all. Could be improve if it's stronger as well! Both drinks weren't memorably amazing that we would go back to. But it's an ok option to try if you're looking around Santana row and the mall! read more

This was my first time going to this location and it's sooo cute!!! Loved the decor and the vibes!! Service was super friendly and fast! I went right upon opening so there was no line. I got the banana latte and it's sooooo freaking good! I do miss the chocolate curls they put on top but the topping this time was crunchy and yummy The Everything croissant stuffed with chive cream cheese was so amazing I can't stop thinking about it. Definitely going to repeat this combo again! read more

It gets good traffic despite having the worst parking. Located on what used to be UC Extensions Ag research station they've been able to turn it into a cute small park. The Wifi and bathrooms aren't public. I think you have to ask for the code. They don't have an oven for heating their pastries. Wish they had a tip jar for fund raising for one. They don't take cash. I prefer their downtown location by SJSU & Notre Dame, but if you find yourself near Valley Fair/Santana Row this isn't a bad choice. read more
Been dreaming of the matcha banana latte with a banana cream top and I finally got to try it. So worth the $9. The cream top tastes like banana ice cream and it compliments the matcha perfectly. I got mine with oat milk and less sweet. It was PERFECT! My partner got the banana coffee latte, he loved it. The line can be long, so be prepared to be patient. Once you order the drinks come out fast though! Lots of patio seating and nice palm trees in front. Inside has a little bench and a couple of bar stools. Parking is very tight, we parked in the shopping center at the corner and walked. Bring your furry friend! read more
My friend is a fan of Academic Coffee. Whenever we talk about matcha, he mentions the banana matcha at Academic. I'm rarely in SJ, so when the opportunity arose, I asked my companion if we could go. The cafe is a standalone. It's easy to pass up, but you'll see a line of people or groups congregated outside. They have seating areas where you can sit or work, primarily outside. Inside is super chill; there's only a bench to sit on and some barstools. With their popularity, their system works like this: line up, order, receive your wait time, get a text when your drink is ready, and grab and go. I was told it would take 15 minutes, but I got my drink in 10. Everyone working was friendly, and the turnaround is relatively quick. Parking is challenging; there are limited spots available, and many cars are waiting in line. I got the Guava Matcha with Guava Cream and Oat Milk. The guava cream was so thick, a nice touch of guava and li hing, and oh so creamy! The matcha, on the other hand, was just okay. It was pretty mild and not earthy, which I prefer. Without the cream, I'd be disappointed, but the cream definitely overpowered the drink. The drink was pretty pricey, so I if I'd order it again. I'm happy to have finally tried Academic Coffee! They have a few spots in San Jose. This one off Winchester Blvd. is a popular spot with limited parking. If I go again I'll try their banana matcha. read more
Very cool new spot next to valley fair with a nice park/apartment complex next to it. There is always a line (it's how you know the coffee will be good) but it does down pretty quick. Very well known for their banana lattes but I've had a few things here and they were all delicious! Here is what we got this time: 1. Everything Croissant with green onion cream cheese (9/10) which was really delicious! Buttery croissant with really good cream cheese inside. It comes with no meat so if this is a deal breaker, don't get this. Really solid. 2. Espresso Banana Latte (10/10) this is my go to! So delicious! If you're new here, I highly recommend his as it's always so consistently good! 3. Piloncillo Latte (10/10) this was my fiancés rating as she loved this one! I would give it a solid 8/10 because it wasn't my fav. It has a strong caramel flavor as well as like a brown sugar but I can see people LOVING this if that's your gig. Regardless, Academic is super solid to go to if your ever in the area. Great to grab a coffee and walk around to shop. read more

Always enjoy coming to Academic! Their Banana Latte and Banana Matcha are sooo delicious. I'm a huge fan. Can't wait to see what they come out with next! Note: parking is really tough. They have a small lot but it fills up pretty fast and street parking is abysmal. read more

We came here specifically for guava matcha but did not realize it was only served Thursday - Sunday. So I got a pandan lattte and my daughter got pilancillo latte. I've got to say both were lukewarm and underwhelming. While the ambience is simply amazing, the space and parking are limited. The baristas are not knowledgeable about the coffee they are serving. I think the place has potential but has to work hard If they want to be known for coffee. read more
