How does this place have such high ratings for extremely rude service and subpar ramen? Too bad I have to give at least 1 star because I'd give minus 5 stars for this place. My friend and I decided to try this place out because of the ratings, but after today we're clearly NOT coming back! They sat us down and didn't give us utensils to begin with so when our ramen came, with no server to be found, my friend got up and grabbed a couple of chopsticks for us (nothing more than we needed). I opened my chopsticks up and found what appeared to be a blood stain on my set so I got up and grabbed another. The server yelled, "Excuse me, stop grabbing more and more chopsticks and opening them up and not using them." My friend said, "We both only have one set each..." I think it's great as a late night option since they're open til 3am and I like how you can get other items other than just ramen. I like the gyoza and tako-wasa they have here. The gyoza is crispy and a good price for 6 pieces. The tako-wasa has a nice kick to it and the octopus tastes fresh. I know a few of my friends really enjoy the ramen here but it's just underwhelming to me. The broth doesn't have that deep, rich flavor that I love. If you like a lighter and clean tasting broth then you'd probably enjoy the ramen here. I usually get the tonkotsu or miso ramen. The chashu is well cooked and has a good flavor and the noodles have a nice bite to them. The noodles are some of the best I have had.They have the perfect broth to noodle ratio and you never feel like one is too much. ATTENTION ALL SPICY FOOD LOVERS - - - only get the HALF spicy!!! I know it may hurt your i-can-eat-spicier-food-than-you ego, but seriously trust me on this one. It'll keep your tastebuds in tact for the whole meal and save you a painful trip to the restroom later. Unless you're a masochist or something and into that. It was time to break away from the normal routine of Shin Sen Gumi, Santouka, or Daikokuya to try something new during my usual weekly craving for ramen, but I was very glad I felt just a bit adventurous yesterday. Umenoya is a tiny little place in an even tinier strip mall on the corner across the street from Tony Roma's. Look for a red sign. You won't be greeted by shouting workers in Japanese here, it's much more laid back. This place is so small that the entire floor seems to either be very clean OR more likely, covered in grease from the kitchen because your chair will slide around on the tiles like you are on ice! Which can be dangerous or very entertaining. NOTE: THERE ARE NO PUBLIC RESTROOMS HERE! I ordered the Tonkotsu Ramen which already comes with green onions, chashu, ginger, egg, seaweed, and garlic for around $8. So cheap when compared to Shin Sen Gumi's have-it-your-way style which really adds up. The bowl came out piping hot and HUGE as everyone else says. The bowl is tapered at the bottom so once you think you've finished your bowl you are surprised by how much you have left hidden at the bottom. I was extremely full and thankful didn't decide to order any sides. The noodles are definitely thicker and wonderfully al dente here. For you hungry hippos, extra thin noodles are $1 while extra thick noodles are $1.50. The broth was not the milky color that I am used to seeing so I was skeptical, but after one sip I was sold. You can clearly taste all the pork bone fattiness that went into making the broth (as well as see it too with that lovely oily sheen on the surface). It is very different than any other broths I have tasted in LA, SD, as well as NY. I was a bit apprehensive that my bowl wasn't going to be spicy because well my bowl looked exactly the same as my boyfriend's non-spicy bowl but after one sip WOOOWEEEEWOW what a lovely kick! It is 50 cents to make your bowl spicy and even if you ask for half spicy like I did you still have to pay the full 50 cents. Which is fine because it was more than enough heat. I absolutely love this ramen joint. It's a small establishment with delicious food. My husband and I have been coming here for years now and this is a long overdue review. The staff is very friendly and courteous though not a chatty bunch. The interior is homey and your typical hole in the wall type of feel. The food, not just the ramen is great, best one around to be honest. Only negative I would say is that the broth is a little on the saltier side, but it may just be a matter of preference. The best part about this restaurant is that they are able to make your ramen extra spicy without all that heavy chili paste stuff which I LOVE LOVE LOVE. Always my go to ramen spot. Rating: 48/100 pts Umenoya is the only ramen in town open past 11 (they're actually open until 3am on most days, except Tuesday, their day off, and Sunday, when they close at 11), making them the default late-night ramen spot. With great availability, quality naturally suffers, and it is a clear few notches below the other ramen shops in town. In most cases, flavor is substituted by cheap tricks (i.e. a large helping of fat) instead of artisan flavor balancing. One positive is that they have a lot of ramen varieties to choose from, though I can't say I've been particularly moved by any of them. Though inferior to most of Torrance's other ramen, the spicy miso, tonkotsu (pork broth), and shoyu (soy) varieties do count for decent late night snacks, each one coming with a generous helping of chashu pork. The tsukemen, (dipping ramen), which I usually consider my favorite variety and am thus soon to scrutinize, was very sub-par; there was a whole mess of toppings in the bowl, but they didn't really go well with the broth. Speaking of broth, it had very little flavor, a fact they are apparently aware of, tipped off by the huge lemon wedge they give you to make it more palatable. Note that the point of tsukemen is to have a very strong broth, to the point where it's too strong to sip on its own (hence the separate bowl for dipping). Another option of note is the Abura Soba, a variety that is uncommon even in Japan. The name is misleading: abura means fat/oil, and soba means buckwheat noodles. However, it does not use soba, and it actually only has a portion of the fat content of regular ramen. In this case "abura" is referring to the flavoring, which is placed on the bottom of the bowl, and "soba" to the original Japanese word for ramen, chuuka-soba (lit. Chinese soba/noodles). It uses no broth; instead, you simply mix the flavoring into the noodles until you have a delightful gooey mess. Prices are standard, so I don't think I'd ever come here when any other ramen places are open. But that said, circumstances have often funneled me here, and I have to say I'm glad it's open. Umenoya offers a nice getaway for those "ramen cravings" especially late at night when many other restaurants locally will be closed, however on our few visits, we've always had a very mixed experience. Service: When we arrived tonight, a handful of tables were open in addition to bar seating towards the front of the restaurant. We were motioned to choose our own seating but then were made aware that booths were only for larger parties. We kindly requested if booth seating would be possible as there were over three booths open and my partner and I both have severe back pain. Once again, we were told that this would not be possible. As the restaurant is relatively small, the staff were quick to ask for our drinks and put our order in, although we were not checked on once throughout our stay besides when our entrees were brought to the table. We appreciated the overall warm energy and kindness that was expressed by the staff but felt forgotten and undervalued as the stay went on. Food: In all three instances of our visits, the edamame that we received was undercooked and in one case difficult to eat. The gyoza (ordered twice) was flavorful, but a third was burnt and inconsistent from the rest. Umenoya's ramen is where they truly shine. I've personally always enjoyed their spicy offerings and flavored eggs are cooked well. While my experiences with their ramen have always been favorable, it provided the only saving grace for what was otherwise an underwhelming experience. Overall: Umenoya provides the South Bay and Torrance locals with a great opportunity to experience some great ramen (among other dishes) throughout the day and into the night, however, the appetizers and often unwilling to compromise service are what makes this ramen shop fall short. When this place first opened, my boyfriend and I shared one ramen, However, they came out and gave us extra toppings, enough for two people. That was very generous, and I've been coming back ever since. Their spicy miso is also very good, the shaved chili is decorative, but also delicious. Also, their Jiro ramen is huge, Be warned. What a find! It's small and far from elaborate sitting in a tiny strip mall next door to a do-it-yourself pet washing establishment. But the food is *spectacular*. I'm far from a ramen expert and it's difficult for me to convey specifics as almost everything is written in Japanese. But I can tell you this: the food is fresh, finely crafted and delicious. The noodles (including the gyoza wrapping) are so gently, yet perfectly al dente, that I would be quite surprised if they weren't hand-tossed. You cannot go wrong with any of their ramen creations. The menu even lists about a dozen extras you can add to your bowl such as minced garlic, chopped scallions, etc., for about 25 cents each. Throw in a dollar and you get unlimited noodles. You must not pass on the gyoza -- among the best I've ever eaten. If you're into spice, Umenoya offers Russian Roulette Gyoza in which one of the pieces is off-the-chart ~hot~. A lot of fun and a real treat. And forget about Denny's; this place is open until 3:00 a.m. . Prices are more than moderate and our service was excellent. read more

They were perfect - alkaline noodles slightly thicker than I'm used to... chewy, tasty and cooked just right. My ONLY reservation was the cold egg (I know, a small thing) which is my pet peeve after eating ramen in Japan. I Was feeling under the weather and needed something hot and spicy. My friend and I entered this spot and I fell in love. I got the ramen with the pork broth. (Sorry I can't pronounce the name). I added kimchi to mine as well. We also ordered gyoza and edamame. My soup was perfect. I got the regular which was the right size for me. The broth is what drew me in the most. Warmed my soul. The ginger and onion were a great addition as was the kimchi. The meat was velvet. The gyoza was good and their edamame was very fresh. Wonderful service and very fast. I liked that. Growing up in the southbay there is a handful of ramen places and this is a gem I found close to home. Umenoya doesn't have much selection in the various versions of ramen you can have but their Tonkatsu ramen is very good! It is difficult for me to compare Umenoya to the infamous Shinsegumi but they give a good fight in taste! The tonkatsu base is a bit oily for my liking, but I also think that is also what makes the ramen so yummy! Their fried rice is also very good, but can be a bit oily at times. My boyfriend and I come here from time to time and we always get 1 order of Tonkatsu ramen with extra noodle and an order of fried rice. When you add extra noodle to your ramen, the quantity is well worth your money and I would recommend it if you don't mind sharing :] We have also tried the Miso ramen but went back to the Tonkatsu ramen because we felt it was more tasty. The other positives is that this is one of the few ramen places that are open late. On certain days they are open until as late as 3am! The only downfall is that this place is very small and it is not somewhere that is quiet unless it is not busy. Also, they have a $20 minimum charge to use your credit card so although the ramen is well priced, be sure to bring cash if it is just you and maybe one friend. However, if you can past credit card issue, the limited seating, and the squishy feel of the seating I would definitely recommend this place! Came here after basketball with Duke C. Also it was the only place that was open this late. It is in a nice little plaza with a donut shop, tailor, and Regina's (seems like a club, but need to check it out). The interior is nice and everything looks good. I got the Jiro special with extra jiro. I don't know what they do to it, but this thing is massive and there are so much veggies. Eating this thing is amazing. They pile on so much flavor and toppings (tons of cabbage, moyashi, & onions, with minced garlic) I love garlic and veggies, they actually take a back seat to the noodles for me. For me I just loved eating all the toppings, it is a great amount for the price. I have also had the gyoza, chicken kaarage and calamari. Everything was good and looked great coming out. Everything tasted good, but nothing jumped out as being super spectacular. Overall I would say this is a great place to try. Good price for a heft amount of food. The soup isn't the most flavorful and the noodles may not be the best, but the jiro style is pretty unique and somehow all works together greatly. The ramen here was really bad in my opinion. I had the spicy miso and my better 1/3 had their Jiro Ramen. If you ever felt you needed a lot of cold, raw onions thrown in your ramen, you may like it more than we did. That's not the highlight though. The highlight of the meal was when we wanted to pay. We were using a Utopia voucher which we use at many establishments without issue, but the lady who came to take our payment saw the voucher and flicked my credit card and said, "You use this, you pay cash!" She walked away before we could say anything. When she returned about 10 minutes later, I explained we did not bring cash, she sharply responded, "You use this, you pay cash!" and walked away again. We usually tip 20% cash, so of course we had some on us. We scraped together what we had, and I grabbed another $5 in change from my car. I felt bad we ended up with a couple cents over the total, so we couldn't tip our server who was very good. Overall, I would not go back. We left about half of both ramens, and the cashier really sealed the deal. Beware of this place. How it has more than 1 star is beyond me. read more

They all differ in their ramen noodles and ingredients in their bowl, with Umenoya providing the most "stuff" included in their bowl of ramen, for the more complex ones like jiro or veggie ramen. Where this place loses a star (or almost 2 stars but I'm being more generous) is the angry older lady waitress almost every negative review talks about who likely holds an ownership interest in the restaurant otherwise would've likely been let go a long time ago. I don't like to say negative things about restaurants unless there is a good reason to do so. In this case, I've had more than one experience which has not been pleasant, all involving her. I won't get into details here but just know that if you choose to come here, you can expect the food to be good but not necessarily the dining experience. read more

Been here before and it's not my favorite place but it's close so I brought my grandma here for dinner. She's 80 years old and when I asked if the two of us could have a booth she said "no it's only for 3+ parties." She said we could sit at the bar (that had stools with no backs) or at a table with tiny little uncomfortable chairs. I told her that those chairs would be uncomfortable for my grandma. I understand if the place was busy but there was one other table if 2 people in the whole place. We came here ever since it opened. It was good back then, but I will not recommend anyone around me t9 visit this place. First of all, this place is not child friendly. At the entrance it actually says "no strollers". Secondly, they mix up your orders with other table, which happens every time we visit. Thirdly, their dishes and cups are dirty. It's a relatively small place and even now, I'm not sure if they even have a public bathroom here. The ramen goes anywhere from $8-$10. You can add extra toppings such as eggs and bamboo shoots for $0.50 each. The menu is not cluttered with a myriad of options either. Please bring back the Tantan-men! Me Korean! Me love spicy! It was the special you guys were promoting when you first opened. I actually enjoyed it the most out of all the other ramen flavors that I've tasted here so far. And what's up with the portions now? They used to be massive but now a large size barely fills me up. I guess you guys were still in the testing phase... But for the most part, their ramen is good. The broth doesn't have the explosive flavor nor the wow factor of Santouka's, and also it can get a bit too oily. But their chashu pork is really good and tender. Good place in Torrance area if you have late night drunchies!! They are open until 3AM! I got their Fried Squid which was pretty good. I also got Chashu Bowl..I don't know if it was because I was drunk...or it just tasted pretty frekin amazing..LOL. My boyfriend got some kind of ramen...not sure which one and he said it was just okay. Definitely wouldn't be my first option for Japanese food..but if you're looking to eat somewhere at 2AM then Umenoya would def be your best bet! read more

As many Yelpers have already said, great late night option! There aren't too many food places (let alone, ramen places) that are open past midnight! Honestly put, this place keeps me satisfied! It's not a place I would go out of my way to eat ramen, but the fact that it's open late is always an option. My friends enjoy the jiro ramen, but I mostly stick to my regular appetizer (fried rice or gyoza) & ramen. Fried rice here is good! If you like slightly softer skin gyoza, this place is for you! I personally like mine a little crispier, but the quality is still great! Ramen wise, I love tonkotsu. I usually just get the tonkotsu chashu ramen! Parking is small and it's in a little strip. I don't know how it is during the day/early evening here, but I've gone past 10 pm where there's a good amount of people here with enough parking. read more
