We just found our new favorite Japanese restaurant of all time. The name might make you think sushi is their entire menu but not at all. Their other menu items are also fantastic. I just had the Katsu chicken and it was perfection. Had the entree and the miso dressing and miso soup were both spot on. The restaurant is run by the owners and the service was so awesome and friendly. The dining room was spotless, and welcoming. We already can't wait to go again. And the value was also super. Do not understand why it's reviewed so poorly. I've been coming here for years & i absolutely love it! I will never go to another sushi place in the area as long as I live in the 209 lol. The wait time isn't long, there's TVs on almost every wall. I usually call in my orders because I crave it while I'm on lunch but when I do eat inside it's fairly quick. The waiter is attentive & nice. We never have to ask him more than once for anything. It's our regular spot. I literally recommend it to everyone. read more

Let me set the scene: Its a week day, Tuesday 7pm. Family of four walk into a small sushi restaurant, their first time there. It looks busy, for a Tuesday anyway..... As soon as we walked in, a waitress from across the entire restaurant, greets us and loudly asked us if we have a reservation. With almost the entire restaurant looking at us we say "No". As they got a table ready and sat us, a group of 4 people came in after us, who did have a reservation. As a waitress came over to get our drink order she was interrupted by a woman, who I assume was her manager, and told her to help the reservation people first, literally in the middle of our drink order (so rude). So she left to help them. Thankfully she left some menus for us to read. A few mins later a different woman came to us. Didn't ask us anything, just stared at us like we were ready to order. So we told her our drink order and asked her come back so we could order food. She did, and we ordered. They obviously have NO system in place for order taking. We had 3 different people help us the entire time we were there. I noticed alot of take out orders being filled as well while we were there. Apparently the waitress who did take our order forgot to put my order in for a roll. When she finally came over to us to ask if everything was ok, I said "No, I never got my roll", by this time the rest of my table was almost done with all their food. I finally got my food, she apologized, and gave us some cut up pieces of mochi ice cream on the house. The food was good, but the service was absolutely the worst! I now understand why there was so many takeout orders. Still though, very highly unlikely we will ever be back. Like the service was so bad even my kids were laughing about it. It was ridiculous. My friend, finance and I went to unwind after a stressful workweek. First let me start by saying that in all actuality the food was okay. Not three best sushi I've ever had but not the worst by a long shot. However, we really found it hard to get service and when we did it was brief and kinda rude. We tried to enjoy the night but it was difficult because although it was relatively empty we received sub-par service overall. It took so long to put in our order and we were excited about the inexpensive drinks, but in the long time it took to get anyone's attention, we really lost the appeal for it. We are regular sushi eaters and have visited many placed in Modesto. Until recently, Osaka was our favorite but a bad customer service experience had us looking elsewhere. We were led to Umi Sushi and have been regular customers ever since. The fish is fresh and the service is great. The owner regularly checks on her customers - stopping to chat about the service, food, and what's going on in life. We have three children and the staff is friendly and patient with our toddler when he gets restless (we usually arrive, eat, and leave before the dinner crowd). We have been on dates without the children and receive the same great service and food. I usually order rolls and nigiri, while my husband orders the sashimi platters. Everything we have tried has always been great and fresh tasting. Plus, they have halibut available ... Not something usual around modesto. I'd def recommend. read more

I had two different rolls. Don't remember the name of them but they were absolutely delicious. My husband in the other hand had chicken and beef...it was not cooked all the way or how its suppose to be. I tried some and it was so chewy. I can definitely say it was not cook right. I'll do let the waitress know, and she said ok I'll let them know. But yeah nothing there. We just won't go there next time. Horrible service, was given a menu, was told that we could order more sushi, were given two rolls then told the sushi bar was closed. We were ready to order a good amount of food. So as I Was preparing to order my food to go I made it very clear that I have celiac disease and I cannot have my food come into contact with any form of gluten which includes wheat barley Rye soy sauce. I even explained that my food cannot be prepared on the same surface nor prepared with the same gloves that previously touched other contaminated food. Hands down the best. The only place I go to for sushi and I come every week. So I guess my opinion is biased but hey I'm a sushi lover. I come here at least once a week. The 99cent sake bombs are always bomb haha. I always get sea urchin with quail egg and I love it. I always ask if it was fresh and they will always tell you the truth. The half off rolls are always a plus but they're only available mondays to Thursday. I'm not 100% sure but I only go during the week. I love the owners because they're really nice and everyone should all get to know them. I really love the sashimi and nigiri special they have. The prices are very reasonable. Horrible experience. We ordered Toro that was hard and discolored around the edges. We also ordered a Uni that was far beyond its time, it tasted like a porta potty smells. This review is from myself and my 10 year old niece-goddaughter. When we arrived to the restaurant, the greeting was lacking and it wasn't busy at the time. It seemed liked the waitresses were distracted and unhappy according to my niece. Our order was simple and easy to make-California rolls, 1 handroll, green mussels and an ama ebi. It was 25 minutes later that I asked when our food was coming which is ridiculous. The waitresses were a little confused and tried to give our CA rolls to the table next to us. We received our food after three other tables received their extravagantly large orders. One positive thing about our dinner experience was our nice waitress. She was vibrant unlike the other waitresses. Even though the food was good, I'll never return to this sushi restaurant. First off, when you walk in you get hit in the face with the smell of fish. We had literally got there 5 minutes after they opened, and they already had a few tables sat. Second off, you think since they just opened, the bathroom would be clean- the floor was sticky as hell and was overflowing with trash. Ok, the food- we got 3 rolls the Umi special roll, California roll, and another I forgot the name of. All tasty, except the seaweed was tough and made it hard to eat. Big downfall- the wasabi was tasteless and watered down (wasabi should be spicy!), when we asked our server (who was amazing) was honest and said "yeah I hear this a lot I don't understand it either, I can get you some from the sushi bar which is more potent" which we said yes and she brought it over and it was REAL wasabi. So if you like wasabi, ask for it from the sushi bar. Wouldn't try this place again as I've been to places I enjoy a lot better, but fix a few things and this place has potential. read more

Firstly, I called them to ask them about the wait time for a table for 5, I didn't want to just walk in with a big group so I thought it'd be polite, the lady who answered didn't start the phone call politely and hung up RIGHT after she said the wait was 25-35 minutes. I shrugged this off because it was a Saturday and I just figured it was busy. We walked in, and we were assisted to our table. After we were seated we waited 35 minutes for a waitress to even come over get our order for drinks, when she came up to the table she asked for our drink order not ever looking at us and just looking at her tab, I told her we had our orders ready too. She then responded with "well I'm just going to get your drinks," I said okay even though I thought it was a bit odd, I've never been anywhere where they don't let you tell them your order but okay. After she brought us our drink after another 10 minutes, she didn't give them to the right people, and she didn't set them on the table she handed them very awkwardly to each of us. After that, she left and still didn't take our order. She just walked away not saying a word. She came back in 5 minutes and finally took our order, and it seemed as if she'd never taken order in her life. She was confusing and confused all of us at the table. After that she never asked any of us for refills even though three sodas were empty, another waitress came and refilled our drinks. Our original waitress came back with our food and again didn't give the right people what they ordered. After we got almost all our food, we were still missing one bowl of ramen, which the other waitress noticed and asked what we were missing and brought us our ramen, gave us refills and asked us if we wanted ginger and wasabi as the other waitress didn't care to ask. The original waitress came back again with our check, before cleaning off any plate or asking if we would like anything else, so I asked if we could add on three orders of mochi balls because we never got the chance before she brought the check. She seemed annoyed and just walked away, didn't even say anything and went into the kitchen. after we got those she cleaned the table but didn't bring the check. We sat there waiting for the check for about 15 minutes after we were done eating our dessert. Then she brought us our check and I gave her my card. My first card got declined which I thought was very odd because I had just gotten refunded well over the amount that was due, but I've had issues with my bank so I didn't think anything of it, checked another bank account and gave her another card, again that got declined which I thought was very odd because I had checked the account prior to giving her the car, but it's fine because I have my backup card that is a joint account with my moms, and I called her and she said that there was money on that, but again declined. Very odd that I checked all three accounts and they all had money but none worked, when she came back the 3rd time she said very rudely "I don't know what's wrong with them everyone else's cards have worked it must be you". After this, I called my mom who was luckily down the street eating at Pastas Pronto and asked her to come help. She did and the funny thing is that she paid with the same account that I have a card for, and we were both confused on why the joint card I have didn't work. But whatever can change anything now but if there was any way to give a negative tip or a -5 star review I would have, never coming back here again. Fresh, friendly, fast, variety, constancy, & reasonably priced, is what you will find here. My wife & I have been to many a Sushi Bar, but this the one that we have had for 6 of the last 9 day's. Its been "Top of the Line", & accept for once or twice in the past that they corrected. Can't say what went wrong with others that have left reviews, but if you know anything about people, most will go out of their way to tell about the bad more than the good.
