First time here. Food was ok and the waitresses were very friendly, BUT I'm not ever going back. A man came out of the kitchen area and went to the men's restroom with a single glove on his hand and returned back out with that glove still on his hand and went back to the kitchen. The waiter didn't come back to ask if we were ready for what seemed like 30 or so minutes.. she came back & took our orders & finally asked us what we wanted & what to drink.. Most servers come back & greet us after about 5 mins after seating & starts us off w/ what we wanted to drink so I thought that was a bit weird.. Had lunch here today and it was fabulous and we will be back. The rolls are 50% off but still great size and very delicous. We shared 4 rolls with 3 people and it was plenty. Umi Sushi is a mixed bag. It all comes down to which workers are there. Sometimes they have the really good sushi chef and the rolls turn out fantastic. Other times they have a terrible sushi chef and the rolls fall apart or are just small. Same situation with the servers, some are excellent and some won't bother to give you a refill. It's hard to give a solid review since I've had many fantastic dinners but I've also had a lot of "I'd rather have spent my money elsewhere". Like I said, it's a mixed bag. First time here with my wife! Not impressed at all I ordered a sashimi platter and it was disgusting, we waited 45 min for our order to be served. My wife, two young children and I drove down from the Sonora area to Umi Sushi on July 20th 2021 for a special family outing. When we arrived shortly after they opened at 1130 we were greeted by a young lady who told us to sit wherever we would like, so we chose a table. As soon as we sat down I noticed how dirty the table was, but after looking around at other nearby tables I noticed they were dirty too, so we just decided to wipe down our own table. Then I noticed the ground. It looked like it hadn't been swept in weeks, there was food and pieces of napkins scattered about. Feeling slightly discouraged I decided to use the men's restroom. This is where it got REALLY BAD. As soon as I approached the men's restroom door I could see tons of finger prints and yucky essays all over the men's restroom door. So many people have pushed the door open, rather than use the dirty handle, that the paint has physically been worn off the door. Repaint it, nope that would require a few dollars and some energy, so they leave it as is. As soon as I walked in I immediately smelled a strong urine smell. After walking to the urinal I saw why, it was full of orange bubbly urine, it looked like it hasn't been flushed and 30 guys had just peed in it, so gross I thought, so I used my foot to flush it. I also noticed my feet were sticking to the floor and everytime I lifted my foot to take a step it was making an audible sticking noise, again so gross. I had our 3 year old son with me as well, the bathroom was so gross he didn't want to pee in it, he said "daddy this bathroom is yucky." I had to persuade him to then use the toilet, which by the way, we were the first customers of the day, BUT it was absolutely filthy, urine all over it, pubic hair on the toilet itself, absolutely unsanitary and unacceptable. And the toilet seat itself was broken with half of the right side missing, leaving sharp edges of plastic exposed, can you say safety hazard? We def didn't wash our hands in there because everything was covered in nastiness. I walked back to our table with my shoes now sticking to the dining room floor as well from being in the restroom. I told my wife what I had observed, but because we were already there, already seated, and everyone was hungry we hesitantly ordered our food. While waiting we started looking around and my wife pointed out how dirty the front door was. I dont mean like a few finger prints, but hundreds. Again it looked like no one had cleaned the front door / window for weeks! We continued waiting for our food while observing how filthy the dining room was. The food arrived in an acceptable time frame, but the first thing we noticed was that our rolls were not as big or rolled nearly as tight as the precious times we'd visited, however we ate everything because we were starving. Food was okay but not as good as usual. The waitress didn't check on us at all, not a single time. No "how is everything" nothing. Then when we were done she walked over, didn't say a word and sat the check on the table, again no "was everything okay" absolutely nothing. All in all I can't emphasize enough just how dissapointing this experience was. Lack of service, a dirty dining room, an even dirtier restroom and to top it off the Sushi wasn't as good as usual. After waiting weeks for a special family outing, traveling an hour to get here and paying $50 for our meal, we decided afterwards never again will we make this mistake. There are many restaurants that are far better than this one, have better food, better service and cost less. The county health department really needs to inspect this place before someone becomes ill or even worse. Sadly I can not recommend Umi Sushi. read more

This sushi restaurant would have to be one of my favorites in this town. It's hard to come across a decent sushi place in the middle of nowhere, but this place does the job. They are quick, clean, have great service, and are fairly priced (not that sushi is really ever cheap). Their sushi hasn't disappointed me yet, but I'm only giving it 4 stars because there are obviously going to be better sushi restaurants elsewhere in the bay area or even Elk Grove. Great! Even though they are sauce heavy, as the trend is to make it accessible to ALL the fatties around here, they are great! Good selection of different styles of "sushi" and other Japanese and Americanized items. Great friendly, some times loud in a good way, staff. Delicious!!! I really really like this place and am not completely sure why I like it so much? The ambience is nice. It's an open area with a natural devise of flowers from the tables and family/group area and the more intimate two person tables and counter/bar seating. It's oddly comforting even though it's so open and busy. Maybe it's just what a restaurant should be like... Everything is happening and it's all good and all for you to enjoy. Good stuff Oh yeah! Came here one afternoon and ordered a sashimi salad that came out quickly and well-prepared. I found the fish delicious and complimented well by however the entire thing was dressed. The reason I give this place 2 stars is due to chef laziness and lack of pride in creating sushi. Staff was pleasant, place was clean, the menu looked promising.... yet, with an empty restaurant the chef felt it was not necessary to make fresh rolls and used pre-fried, soggy and cold shrimp tempura to make rolls. This is highly offensive and mind blowing to me. It's sad the owner and costumers will miss out on what could have been a great sushi restaurant. Get a new chef that actually cares. read more

I got ready for the night (lazy clothes) then went to "set up" dinner . it didn't seem right. I took it out.. this is what we got salad miso soup teriyaki chicken rice and a roll. I was very confused . I looked at the receipt which only provided the total. I called and the last proceeded to tell me I was wrong. i ended up having to drive over to get it situated. nevertheless me with my hair thrown up. yoga pants tank top no make up no sock but slippers in there standing there trying to explain what we were suppose to get. and what I personally ordered. well the oringally waitress didn't understand what I meant by the chicken teriyaki with umi sushi and Cali roll combo. she put umi roll. well the lady (owner I assume) basically kept breaking it down what happened and that it'll be fixed. well it was half fixed. they gave me the umi roll that I didn't want as well as half the order I wanted which was the umi roll and Cali roll. still missing half and I told her it was missing what I wanted. she then said I would have to pay for the coarse i was suppose originally get just to take home the other half.... mind you not I'm standing in this restroom totally embarrassed looking ghetto. I left with my bfs order which was just the regular chicken teriyaki combo. I hope they enjoy their $16 DOLLAR TIP. cuz in order to refund me in which she originally said she cannot do I'd have to go back home to go back with the card. As an example of living here in Modesto for years it is sad to say how customer service has so downgraded I've been to Umi sushi a few times!!! I've ordered out like three times from there I always tell them extra spicy mayo every time they refused to put it is like they have something against sharing that male with every role I call to explain to them $27 later and two rolls messy in a Styrofoam to go tray I wanted my money back the man was very rude and said you're not getting your money back what if you put some in the food I cannot believe how rude and how screwed up they do the orders and will not refund nor remake order. Half off menu is only Mon-Thurs but All Day! The service is always good and you really do get what you pay for. The prices are affordable (so don't expect anything too fancy) and the portion is very filling. If you love raw tuna with a modern twist, I recommend the Volcano roll because it is pretty big in portion and toppled with tuna. Be sure to double check the rolls before you bite into them; I have found plastic wrap left behind on a few of my rolls. I travel all 48 continental states working and I often frequent sushi restaurants. This was NOT one of my favorite. The service was punctual and not overly aggressive, however the food left something to be desired. Gyoza was fresh and crisp. Typical Miso and salad was decent. The sushi was NOT top quality or prepared in traditional ways. Two of my three rolls (which I did not finish) were fishy. I know you may say, well it's sushi. That's not what I mean. Well, prepared sushi does NOT have an unclean fishy taste to it. Another aspect to keep in mind was hygiene. I watched one of the sushi chefs behinds the bar eat, then clean and work with food without washing his hands. He, luckily, was not the one making my food. It was serious cause for concern though. I am so glad to have found this place. They have a lot of options for maki rolls and rice bowls. They dont have takoyaki but thats okay. The server was new i believe. Its a busy restaurant because the food was amazing. So i wish they have more workers for faster service. I understand excellence cant be rushed. But we need service that fills up the water without being asked and remembers who ordered what and whats left to come out from the kitchen or a bar. Ask the customers. The food was amazing. If I could give zero stars I would. My family and I use to dine here and the service was great as well as the food. Unfortunately the other night we decided to go there because we were craving sushi and soup. The restaurant was closing in 30 mins so we called ahead to ask if we could still dine in. The lady we spoke with told us we would have to be there at 8:15pm in order to dine in so we arrived 5 mins after speaking with the lady which made it 8:05pm. When we entered the restaurant we were greeted by a rude server who stated they couldn't take anyone because they're closing. My mother had mentioned to her that we called in and the lady said we could. The server then walks away from us abruptly and asks one of her coworkers "did you say they can come?" The other worker confirmed and the server threw her hands up and said to us "have a seat". That was strike one of me deciding if I wanted to leave. My mom asked the server as she was getting the menus from the back "where do we sit?" The server yells , "Anywhere". That was strike two and the last for me so I completely lost my appetite and told the server "you know what we won't eat here" and before I could tell her why she storms off and says "okay". Very rude customer service and I would not recommend this place to anyone anymore because of how my family and I were treated. After we left we found a nice sushi spot called Kimoto Saki and Sushi. My husband ordered some food and they messed up on the order which is ok... we both took a bite or 2 of the sushi we got and realized it wasn't the right order. We would have kept it had it tasted ok but it just wasnt good so we decided to take it back. We take it back and the lady that my husband talked to said that we always took a bite and we messed it up so now she couldn't use it again. My husband told her "You would use sushi again after I had already took it too my house?" All she said was "its hard" and then walked off.
