I prefer straight sashimi and simple, delicate rolls. Umi has the typical Americanized giant special rolls with tons of toppings that while tasty, are so large that the amount of toppings completely overwhelms the flavor of the fish. The sashimi and sushi we ordered separately was delicious for its freshness. Umi is a far cry from the carefully constructed sushi you find in the city... But if you set your expectations ahead of time then I'd say Umi will satisfy your craving for some nice sushi. read more

This is probably our favorite sushi house on the central coast. It's got a great backyard cottage feel with an indoor outdoor area. The waitress was prompt. The sushi was phenomenal. I had the 15 piece sushi set and we shared toro and various roles. I was surprised the bill wasn't higher. Definitely coming back!! read more

Found this place whilst staying in Arroyo Grande. Small very non descript place from the outside however very nice indoor and heated (at night) outdoor seating. Good attentive service throughout ( we arrived close to closing however never made to feel rushed). We had the dinner boxes which were of considerable size and excellent value for money. Fresh tasting well prepared and presented food. Would definitely go again if back in the area. read more

I agree with most of the other reviews about this restuarant being small, quaint, slow, cozy but not glamorous. My wife and I had the dinner combos because it's a good way to get small samples of different items without spending a lot. The appetizer was zucchni pancakes with tsukemono, miso soup and salad with spring mix greens topped with a homemade creamy miso dressing. I give them props for the pancakes and homemade dressing, that was an unexpected treat. We had just started eating the pancakes when an unframed and unsecured picture fell from the wall flat on the table. Disappointing. Compared to other sushi bars in the area the entree was nothing special. It was good, but didn't have any wow factor. I'd like to give them another try, and give them another opportunity to wow me like the other reviewers. read more

We came here because there wasn't a wait on a Saturday night at 7:30. The dining room is small with a few table in the main building and more tables in the enclosed patio. We were seated in the very back of the patio intended to be a storage when they expanded the patio. The table and chairs are garden patio furniture. The problem with sitting back here is I can smell the garbage behind the screened in patio. The service is friendly and efficient. The food was just okay. The tempura udon was average. My kids aren't very picky with sushi & usually are great with a California Roll, but they didn't even like those there. Also the atmosphere was just a little odd. I have become a regular at this sushi restaurant because it is great. The prices are not cheap (although for the central coast I think they are about average) but the quality of the fish far surpass any other restaurant I've been to. I like a bit of spice and love salmon so coho loco is one of my favorites. Also no name #4 which is spicy tuna roll with scallops. My wife and I dined there for the second time tonight. AMAZING. We really liked this place the first time, but I like it even more now. Diablo canyon roll is bomb, pretty spicy. Had the oysters last time, good for sure. Was fortunate to be able to have a "not on the menu yet" item tonight. It was a seafood miso soup. So delicious. The soup was full of clams, scallops and shrimp tails, along with two whole shrimp heads that added so much richness to the broth. Something that I really like about this place though, is how the chef will come to your table and ask how everything was. Personal service goes a long way. Pros - Really fresh fish, nice portions (just right), great beer selection and when they say spicy they MEAN spicy! Cons - small dining area (seats about 30 inside) that can get really backed up. After reading all of the great reviews we had to give it a try. The place was packed when we arrived and we sat at the sushi bar for dinner (not a big deal). The owner / sushi chef was preparing the dishes and was REALLy busy! There was only one waitress for and she was trying to keep everyone happy. Only down side was the wait - it took about an hour to get our sushi / dinner... but we did get a free order of gyoza from the owner. Lots of locals called in their sushi orders (definitely something we would consider next time)... but the food was excellent! read more

tl,dr: Slow service, mediocre taste - go to Raku down the street. I took the lovely Whitney O. here the other night for a little date night. We were recommended this place by a friend who is a regular and hyped up the place quite a bit. Boy, was I not impressed. When we walked in, we were one of 3 tables. We sat at the bar in front of the chef as we like to do and watch them prepare each dish. The chef said maybe 4 words to us, did not engage us in any conversation, and basically ignored us. The waitress was fairly quick in acknowledging us and taking our drink order. Once we placed our food order, things went downhill fast. We waited over 45 minutes for our 2 simple rolls to be made. I noticed that both the tables that were seated before we walked in had not been served either. All three tables were given their food within a span of 10 minutes. I found this very odd considering I never saw the chef make more than a couple rolls that she put on plates. Instead she kept making rolls for to-go orders instead of for the patrons seated in front of her. Once we finally got our food and were on the brink of famine, I was excited to bite into this supposedly delicious food. Other reviewers have called this food the best sushi they have ever tried. I didn't find it to be anything special, and frankly not quite as good as other sushi we've had down the street at Raku. I cannot say that I will be revisiting this restaurant. My next sushi craving in Grover Beach will be fulfilled by Raku. read more

Went there on a Tuesday night, not expecting it to be busy and the wait was not so fun. It took over 45 minutes to get our food with only one waitress working the whole restaurant. I got the 2 item special box and it was good, I was very full afterwards, but nothing mind blowing. The boyfriend said his roll was "okay". They had some interesting looking rolls that I would have liked to try, but I just don't know that it's 4 and a half stars good based on what we had. Just had lunch here for the first time. We are vegetarians and very much enjoyed the veggie teriyaki. The tempura was light and crisp. The salad was fresh with a light dressing that did not drown the veggies. The miso soup was hot and flavorful. This wonderful place is family operated and they allow dogs on their heated patio.
