The sandwiches are delicious- they're so big I usually eat half and save the other half for later. I've tried the pork and chicken breast, and both were amazing. The caramelized onions and jalapeños give it just the right flavor with a bit of a kick. When I'm not feeling like eating too much bread, I go for the carne and rice, which is a good deal for the portion size. Carne and rice also comes out really quickly so it's great for a short lunch break! Though you order at a counter outside, they also have an enclosed area attached with long tables and benches where you can sit down and enjoy your food while getting shelter from the cold and rain. This is definitely one of those places you HAVE to take visitors when they come to Seattle. I haven't met a single person who's had this that wasn't blown away by their sandwiches. I usually like to order either their #1 Caribbean Roast or #8 Sauteed Prawn sandwich. My favorite part of the sandwiches is the flavor and the large marinated onions. Be warned - it's an incredibly heavy meal and you might fall into a food coma afterwards. It's also not a great option for a first date as the sandwiches are very SAUCY (where all the yummy flavor comes from) and it WILL get very messy to eat. Bongos charges 8.50 for the equivalent sandwiches so it's hard to justify 3 more dollars for a taste that is similar or just slightly better but trading seating options and free fruit salsa. It's just not the best bang for your buck when the environment suggests a more casual and affordable atmosphere. The taste is excellent though and the beans truly are legendary. read more

I found out about this place from the YouTube series "Dining on a Dime". I heard that Un Bien was similar to Paseo's and given that I really liked the Caribbean pork sandwich there, I wanted to give this place a try. They have a wide variety of sandwiches and entrees to choose from both ranging from meat (chicken, steak) to seafood (prawns, scallops). I really wanted to try their roasted corn too, but they ran out. :( I ordered the #4 Palomilla steak sandwich and the flavors were good and well-balanced. Prepare to get a bit messy when eating this sandwich. The bread was nicely toasted on the outside but still soft and chewy on the inside. The onions were cut into bigger slices and nicely caramelized for a mild sweetness yet still had a crunch to them. And of course, the steak. The meat was so juicy that the juices were dripping and seeping through the bread. It was tender, well marinated, and had a unique flavor to it. Right off the bat you get a tangy, citrus flavor that is complimented with a mild undertone of spice. To bring it all together, the creaminess of the mayo contrasts with the tanginess of the meat to make this one delicious steak sandwich. For $11, this sandwich wasn't very filling for me and I do wish that it was filled with more meat, but hey, that's just my personal preference. I'll be back to try out their seafood and hopefully come early enough to get some of their corn! read more

I've run by here a bunch of times and seen lines, so I avoided it. But one day recently, the weather wasn't the best and I was hungry, so I figured it was the right day to give it a try. Let me say, too, that I only ever went to the old Paseo a single time, and it was right when I first moved to Seattle over a decade ago. So I really had no memory of what I was about to get into. I asked the counterman to name the most popular sandwich which is, shockingly, the #1. When the sandwich was ready, I found it was one of those sandwiches that is so messy and delicious that you have no choice but to just embrace the gorge and eat the heck out of it. My hands were a mess. The paper wrapper, I wanted to lick clean. There's no doubt that this really is the best sandwich in Seattle. Strangely, the star of the show probably isn't even the meat. You knew that was going to be good. It's the onions. Holy moly, if you don't like onions--either don't eat here or be ready to customize your order. The #1 is just loaded with onions. I'm an elder of Un Bien-formerly Paseo. I've dreamt about coming back since it reopened to see how the former compared to the current. It's good! I'm a fan. I can't give 3 stars because that's just a little too low but 5 stars is a little too high. I just read some other reviews and it sounds like the staff hadn't been too friendly to others. Our experience was the opposite. The guy taking the orders was insanely friendly, sparking genuine conversations with everyone who stepped up to the counter. We sat inside which I have to tell you, was a great option comparatively to the previously non-existent outdoor seating. The wait wasn't bad. We came on a Sunday at maybe noonish and it was a good stream of people but not crowded. Because I ordered a dark beer, paid and sat down the guy who took our order comped us with chips/salsa as he hadn't realized they were out of dark beer. I didn't mind settling with a light Modelo-I mean is it "settling" when it's hot and there's cold beer? Not at all-but thanks for the free food! The Press was still good, not the Cuban Press it used to be but it had good flavor and was a juicy, hot mess-as it should be. As large as this sammich is, I ate the whole damn thang-which speaks to the lack of self control you might have should you experience this yummm yourself. Also note-I would have never tried their chips and salsa. If there's meat, I'm hyper focused. Thank you sir for the comped C&S!! The salsa is surprisingly fresh, savory and sweet. Their chips are obviously made in house, hot out of the fryer. Located in a hole in the wall on the street side. But people flock to this place for good reason. Some of the best sandwiches you will ever have. The prawn sandwich was my favorite with a flavorful sauce and a kick. The ham sandwich and pulled pork were phenomenal as well. The bread is crispy and holds the sandwich together well. When in season the roasted corn is delectable. Sort of a messy eat so be prepared with napkins but it's completely worth it. This is possibly the wettest sandwich I've ever eaten in my life. The entire thing was literally soaked in sauce and it seeped through the wrapper. If you're getting take out, make sure you get a bag! The classic roast sandwich did not blow me away but I'll admit it was pretty savory and the pork was tender and juicy. I wish they had more toppings other than the pork. I'm usually not a fan of soggy sandwiches but this one actually worked out. I remember when I had my first Paseo sandwich years ago in Fremont and how magical it was. Times have changed and it is Un Bien that brings me the most nostalgia and magic now. You truly cant go wrong with any of their sandwich selections whether it be the thighs, fish, steak or prawns but my favorite is still the roast. Now that they take cards, I don't have to worry about scrounging up cash or paying ATM fees on the fly. The onions and lettuce are just enough to get my veggies in for the day. Because the jalapeños are pickled, they have some spice but the hard edge is taken off the heat making for a more pleasant bite. The entire experience is as messy as ever so I always need a stack of napkins and the trusty wet wipes I pack in my purse. I will say that the bread seems a bit smaller and harder than before. On my last visit, I really felt the level of customer service has stepped up. All staff members were very conversational and actually quite funny. I spent like an hour reading all the yelp reviews, everybody raves about this place and honestly idk why. I had Un Bien 2 years ago and was excited to go back again. We limebiked here from The Locks, the place is really easy to spot and it's actually pretty big considering it's just a stand. They have a nice seating area that's outdoors but inclosed. It was super breeze-y and not too hot that day so everything was amazing, would've been better if our meal had been as good as I hoped. I ordered The Press and my boyfriend got the Caribbean Roast. I remember the aioli being a lot tastier than it was (I even got extra aoili but it just wasn't as good as I remember) My meat was really dry too, my boyfriend loved his Carribean Roast though and I think his pork was a lot softer and tastier than mine. There definitely were a few bites that made me think "wow this is bomb", but the next bite would be disappointing. They also don't have any hot sauce in the store lol. I have been to Un Bien several times now and they have one of my favorite sandwiches ever! The Caribbean roast sandwich is amazing. The pork is so tender and flavorful and I love the caramelized onions. They also use Macrina Bakery bread, which is so good. The flavors all complement each other so well and the sandwich is perfectly juicy but also crisp from the bread. I honestly can't find anything to criticize except that you must prepare to get messy! Definitely grab some of those wet wipes and napkins on the counter because you'll definitely need them after. My dad tried one of the plates with rice, beans, and steak and he said that Un Bien has the best beans he's ever had. I love this location in particular because it's super close to and on the way to Golden Gardens park.
