Wonderfully surprised! I don't think Fountain Valley has a Chinese restaurant like this in the area, so I definitely enjoyed this experience. What stood out to me is that while they offer all the classic Chinese-American dishes people know and love, they also have authentic dishes that are much harder to find. Our waiter recommended the braised pork belly, and I'm so glad we ordered it - it was the highlight of the meal!!! The pork was so tender, with layers of meat and fat that practically melted in your mouth. The braising sauce was rich, savory, and slightly sweet. It's one of those dishes that feels comforting from the first bite. I also really enjoyed the dan dan noodles. The noodles had a great chewy texture, and the sauce was packed with flavor. The spice level added just enough kick without overpowering the dish. It's rare to find a restaurant that can serve popular Chinese-American favorites while also offering authentic dishes that feel true to their roots. If you're looking for more than the typical takeout experience, I would definitely recommend trying the braised pork belly and dan dan noodles. This was not a great experience - and we really wanted to like it. The ambiance is very nice. Clean, modern, lovely to eat in. But that's kind of where the good stopped. The fried potstickers lacked flavor as did the dipping sauce for them. Disappointing. My partner had the shrimp lunch special, which they were kind enough to put in brown sauce instead of white, but the shrimp were barely cooked. They weren't a great texture. I had the chow mein with chicken and the chicken was disgusting. I tried a few different pieces thinking that surely, it couldn't all be just the fat of the chicken, but alas, it was. It was like they cut the fat off the chicken breast, cooked it in oil, and served that. Each piece was worse than the last and I eneded up eating around it. This alone makes me not want to eat here again. Service was confused. The watistaff was nice but after they cleared my partners plate (I was still eating), the waitress showed up a few minutes later and was like "Oh my gosh! You still haven't received your food (to my partner) and you're almost done!" We corrected her but the fact that she had no idea one of us had already eaten was very strange. Huge parking lot with plenty of parking. New layout inside is nice and open. Staff are polite and attentive. Our waitress was very helpful and made suggestions that my wife really enjoyed. My wife got the shrimp with sugar snap peas lunch specials. I think we both enjoyed that dish the most. Lots of shrimp and the snap peas done really tasty. She opted to change to brown sauce. I got the beef stew noodle soup. The beef was very tender, and it was a massive bowl. I want to love this place, but the verdict is still out. I've been about four times now, and the biggest issue has been consistency. Every visit has been a little different, and one of those visits was honestly a complete flop. When it's good, it's really good. But when it's off, it's noticeably off. The decor is nice, albeit a little overdone for the space, but still an improvement from the darker, moodier Fortune Cookie that was there before. I'm hoping it's just part of the new restaurant growing pains and that they'll get things dialed in, because there's definitely potential here. Service has been fine, nothing bad, but nothing that really stands out either. With a little more consistency across the board, I could see this place being a go-to. I checked out this new Chinese place w/ my golf buddies, and I'm glad we did. UC is on Brookhurst in FV, where Fortune Cookie used to be. Four of us shared wonton soup, Mingolian beef, honey walnut shrimp, orange peel chicken and stir fry green beans (latter not pictured). First of all, there were a lot of packed wontons in the soup. I really enjoy this comfort dish, and was glad when no one else wanted seconds. Secondarily, the beef was tender and nicely seasoned. It didn't have much heat but my Caucasian crew liked the dish. Likewise, the shrimp were plump and did not have too much sauce like a lot of places. Thirdly, the chicken was not heavy on the batter nor overpowering with the sauce. Lastly, the beans could have been more crispy, but otherwise were okay. One thing I did notice is that the portions of all items were average in relation to the price. Regarding the ambiance, its neat and clean in the dining area. There is plenty of space b/t the tables. Our waitress Mary hails fr Indonesia, and she was friendly & warm. She took very good care of us. We tried another Chinese place up the street (only 3 Stars), and we all agreed we like UC better. We will definitely return here for our after golf lunch. It comes with soup, egg roll, rice and a choice of entrees. $11.75 to $13.75. 7 days a week during lunch. Food; Beef roll 5/5 the beef was tender and paired well with the green onion pancake wrap. Shrimp egg roll. 5/5 filled with flavorful shrimp paste. Stir Fried green beans 5/5 I really enjoyed the green beans. They were tender but still had a nice crunch, and the seasoning brought out their natural flavor. Dan dan noodles 5/5 it was bold, flavorful, and perfectly spiced. Every bite was delicious. Aromatic prawns 5/5 I loved the aromatic shrimp! They had an amazing aroma and were bursting with flavor--definitely a highlight of the meal. Friendly service. Beautiful and clean interior. Chinese food is my top fave and everyone in Fountain Valley says there's no good chinese food here! But Uncle Chen's just opened so we had to give it a try. The hot and sour soup was yummy, very standard and it's a big bowl to share between 2-4 people. We also ordered a black bean fish dish (this is typically a very common one). This one came out red/orange with no sign of black beans. Upon tasting it, it was just like sweet and sour chicken. So we asked our waiter, who was soooo attentive and helpful btw, if this was accidentally sweet and sour sauce. He went to ask the owner and she looked very irritated and said they use a special bean sauce. OK then. So maybe this is a different type of Chinese cuisine. Great service and ambiance. Unfortunately, very low quality food. The meat is cheap quality with no fat or gristle trimmed off and lots of both, leaving you to spit out every bite. The bbq pork is worst. The sauces are gross: sweet and syrupy, loaded with sugar or corn syrup in each dish. The egg flower and corn soup is sweet and gross is actually a corn soup if you're into that sort of thing. I'm not. If you're looking for low quality ingredients and super sugary sweet sauces, this is your place. I don't recommend. read more

Kevin, the hostess, set the tone right away with a warm welcome and made everything feel smooth and welcoming from the start. Then Erick took over as our server and honestly elevated the whole night. I went to Uncle Chen's for the first time this week and ordered food to go. The restaurant is lovely, with very nice tables and booths and modern decor. I ordered Kung Pao chicken with steamed rice. I waited for it to be prepared and took it home. It was delicious. Now that I've seen the restaurant and its modern decor, and enjoyed my meal that I brought home, I'll go again and plan on dining-in. I got the food to go because I was running errands and had groceries in the car that I didn't want to have sit in the car for long. read more

I needed a good authentic chinese sit down restaurant by my job and I found one. Let's get into, first the atmosphere is very nice I love the decor. I had lunch special Kung pao chicken which is always my go to when I visit a restaurant for the first time becuz if you cant get thag right nothing else is worth trying. I loved it, just the right amount of heat comes with a veggie egg roll that was actually good as well and soup. I opted for the egg flower corn soup I missed that flavor hadnt had a good egg flower soup in a long time. Only disappointment is you cant sub the white rice for fried rice. Which I gladly pay an up charge for but it wasnt an option. Maybe you should allow just regular fried rice for a $2 uncharge. I also got the chili oil wonton. A MUST GET!! super flavorful nice spice and cooked to perfection. Finally service was very sweet. I believe my waitress was Mary and she was super kind and attentive. My husband and I came to Uncle Cheng Chinese Eatery for lunch. I ordered the Mongolian Beef lunch special, which included a choice of soup or salad, and I chose the hot and sour soup. My husband ordered the Zhajiang Noodles, which do not include soup. When our meals arrived, a male server brought us two bowls of hot and sour soup. We naturally assumed the order was correct. My husband had already eaten about half of his soup when a waitress came to our table, reached for my untouched bowl, and told us that my husband's meal did not include soup. She said we could keep the extra bowl only if we paid for it. I told her that paying for the soup was not a problem. The price was never the issue. What concerned me was that she was taking back a bowl of soup that had already been served to a customer's table. I decided to let her take it because I wanted to see how the restaurant would handle the situation. To me, once food has been served to a table, it should never be taken back. Even if it was untouched, it had already been placed in front of a customer. I was later told the soup was thrown away, but as a customer I have no way to verify what happened after it left my table. That uncertainty alone made me question the restaurant's food-handling practices and hygiene standards. After our meal, I asked to speak with a manager to share my concerns. I was told the person in charge would speak with me, but I did not feel that my concerns were taken seriously. Instead of apologizing for the restaurant's mistake, I was left feeling as though we were the problem. My husband is a physician, and we are fortunate that paying for an extra bowl of soup would not have been an issue. This review is not about the cost of the soup. It is about professionalism, food safety, and customer service. Mistakes happen in every restaurant. What matters is how they are handled. Unfortunately, this experience left me with little confidence in the restaurant's hygiene practices and customer service. Because of this experience, I cannot recommend dining here. read more

I'm Chinese, and I can say without a doubt this place is really good that I keep coming back about once a week. I'm almost a regular and have tried about 1/8 of the dishes on the menu and continue to try the rest that I'm familiar with. Happy to say I don't need to drive all the way to Irvine to find a Chinese restaurant if I can just go to Uncle Chens! Don't believe the negative reviews, take my advice - I know what authentic Chinese food tastes like. Don't order the typical Panda Express or Chinese fast food menu items like Lucky Chinese down the street, those are not authentic dishes, those are Americanized. Try to explore other menu items or take my advice of menu recommendations. Next time I'll be trying the Dan Dan noodles, and zhajiang noodles. :) Some menu recommendations: -Stir Fried green beans: 4/5 - tasted authentic -Squirrel fish - 2/5 (unfortunately they used the wrong fish aka catfish, and the sauce was very Americanized sweet and sour sauce). -Minced beef egg soup (aka West lake beef soup) - 4/5 - tasted authentic -Kung pao chicken - 5/5 ( reminded me of childhood) - orange peel chicken - 4/5 - braised pork belly - 5/5 ( when done right, tried this twice, first time was perfect, second time was overcooked but complained and got it comped. Wished they gave more Bok choy than just one sliced piece) -black pepper fillet with mushroom - 5/5 (the best, can't explain you have to try) - hot and sour soup - 5/5 (reminded me of childhood) -honey walnut shrimp -4.5/5 (this is comparing against other honey walnut shrimp I've had and this one is very good. They just recently opened so my family and I decided to try this place for dinner. The decor inside is nice, simple and clean and service was prompt. However, the food seemed Americanized and was either too salty or lacked depth of flavor. We ordered the beef noodle soup, their Chef's special "slippery aromatic prawns" which was coated in a basic sweet and sour sauce, their sauteed green beans, and fried potstickers appetizer. The wok hei technique was there for the green beans, but the sauce was overpoweringly salty. The beef noodle soup had tender slices of beef, but the noodles were slightly overcooked and the broth tasted somewhat bland. The sweet and sour sauce for the shrimp dish was overly sweet. Potstickers had a decent filling but the wrapper lacked the right structure and chew - it fell apart from barely picking it up with chopsticks. Uncle Chen's is newly opened so maybe there's opportunity to improve, but after our experience, unfortunately I am not sure it would warrant a return visit from my family. read more

We visited Uncle Chen as a family of three and unfortunately had a very disappointing experience. We ordered a scallion pancake, which turned out to be just one small piece--about the size of a tortilla wrap--for $8. At most other Chinese restaurants, you would get at least three pieces for that price. While the restaurant itself is nicely decorated, it was surprising that in a Chinese restaurant we had to ask the server for chopsticks. We also tried the zha jiang noodles, red oil wontons, wonton noodle soup, and the Uncle Chen special barbecue pork. Honestly, none of the dishes met expectations. The barbecue pork was particularly bad--even my 8-year-old son didn't like it. Everything felt overpriced and, more importantly, the food was not authentic at all. The zha jiang noodles were the worst I've ever had as someone who grew up eating Chinese food. Overall, the service and food quality were both disappointing. If you are Asian and looking for authentic Chinese cuisine, I would not recommend this place. And if you're not familiar with Chinese food but want to try the real thing, this is not the right place--it does not represent authentic Chinese cuisine. Very frustrating experience. Was hoping this would a great Chinese food restaurant in FV after losing Wei's and Mandarin. The staff was pleasant and the inside is brand new. We ordered the chicken chow mein, chicken friend rice, vegetable egg rolls, and scallion pancakes. The egg rolls and scallion pancakes were on the bland side..They were missing something. They were better with the sweet and sour sauce but we did not like the eggy flavor of the spicy mustard. The fried rice had too much egg and again was bland. It helped to mix the fried rice with the chow mein. The chow mein was better than the others but was also a little bland but better since it tasted more of garlic. I wish there were more Appetizer's like Mu Shu chicken and chicken wonton soup. I know it's a new restaurant, so I am hoping some of these kinks can be fixed because there is definitely potential! read more

Just opened ! We've been back 4x we can't stop coming here the vegetables so fresh and the meat is top notch it' might be Taiwanese idk but that won ton soup is AUTHENTIC. That broth so nourishing I felt so good after. Lunch specials really reasonable and the service really cool they are so friendly we are enjoying getting to know them. The sauces on the food don't taste the same it's not super salty or over sauced. If you want great looking shrimp too it's HERE! read more
