My best friend of nearly 40yrs and I really enjoy a well made sandwich. In our pursuit of great sandos, we've tried Katz Deli in NYC, Brent's in Northridge and even the sorely missed but never forgotten Miller's East Coast Deli in San Francisco. So when, tasked with finding a suitable place for our quarterly lunch meeting, I entered "Jewish deli" and "Downey" into Yelp, half expecting to find the lackluster lineup of national chains that PURPORT to make good sandwiches- Subway, Joysie Mike's, Jimmy John's and the usual suspects of sandwich sorriness! Imagine then, fellow Yelpers, when Uncle Henry's Deli appeared...as welcome a sight as my gorgeous bikini-clad wifey. Both Mick and I, who first bonded over our shared love of the national pastime, immediately likened Henry's with the MLB legend who shares my birthday- Henry Louis Aaron, aka Hamnerin' Hank and the REAL all-time home run leader, Barry Bonds and his oversized gourd, er, head be damned. In his 22yr career, Aaron belied his average size (5ft 11 tall, 185 lbs) and deployed his missile-fast wrists to smack 755 homers. All while playing in Jim Crow era Atlanta. Uncle Henry's Deli, similarly, defies expectations. Who would think of putting a Jewish-style delicatessen in Downey, famous for birthing the honey-voiced Carpenters and the self-styled "Mexican Beverly Hills?!" Mick ordered a super sized Original, which is turkey, roast beef + ham plus cheddar on white. He went with potato wedges which are sizable. Me? I chose one hot, one cold. A super sized Big B (Pastrami, Bacon + Swiss on toasted sourdough, hold the pickles) and an Egg Salad on enviably well made squaw bread, hold the tomatoes. Pro Tip- From a lifetime of ordering well made sandos in every major city in America, never put tomatoes on a cold sandwich unless you want the notoriously water-dense fruit to dampen your sandwich! The only mild drawback of my food order was the side of potato salad, which in my opinion would benefit from some black pepper and minced celery. The service at Henry's is expedient- You've barely helped yourself to one of their dark wood benches when they've called your order! The restroom was, yes, as cozy as the overall venue...but sufficiently clean + stocked. Watch out, tho- The hot water runs hotter than the devil's temperature! In closing, you can take Uncle Henry's to the bank. Yes, you'll part with upwards of a Jackson, mebbe even two. But you'll enjoy the treat, cuz the caliber of food is very bit as real as the hammer (aka Louisville Slugger) that Hamnering Hank used to bash all of his home runs with.

Small little sandwich shop in Downey. You order through a kiosk so there's not really a ton of Customer Service. Although they seem nice enough. It's in a strip mall with decent enough parking. The food itself is pretty fantastic. If you were in the mood for deli sandwiches, they have a plethora of options which I would highly recommend. Both their cold cuts and hot sandwiches are delicious. Although personally I would've added a few other condiment options like mustard. But overall a fantastic sandwich

This is our first time trying this place and the sandwiches are absolutely delicious. Italian Stallion: Stuffed with the meats and was delicious, except for the fact that they had a very tiny amount of onions and excessive amounts of oregano. Maybe if they increased the onion servings, added some mustard in here and decreased the oregano or even removed the oregano, this would be a five star sandwich. Philly cheesesteak sandwich: Absolutely delicious. Stuffed with cheese and bursting in flavors. I would definitely order this again.

Not many places like uncle Henrys anywhere. Been in business as long as I've been on this earth 66 years still has one of the family George running the show on this Saturday for my first time visit and he is an absolute wonderful host My brother lives in Downey. He's been there a few times boy oh boy the beer selection is unbelievable including paul aner one of the best hefes world on draft. You'll be hard-pressed to find more draft selections in any place in the entire state. Amazing pastrami sandwich, turkey, avocado, bacon sandwich my brother and I split them prosciutto mozzarella rolls forget about it!!! Thank you, George for your wonderful hospitality my brother and I will be back

While in the area my son & I wanted to try something different so off to yelp to search. This place came up & looked good. My son & I both agreed to give this spot a try. When you walk in it's like a small New York bodega meets a local bar. They have many tables where you can enjoy a beer & a sandwich. Many tv s to watch sports. It look us some time to look over the menu. I opted to get the oink & gobble & my son got the beef dip. Although it's a little pricy you pay for what you get. We also shared potato wedges. The sandwiches were AMAZING and we will definitely return. There was an employee clearing tables & he stopped to speak to us. He was very friendly. There are many beers on tap but I do not drink. Stop by & give this spot a try & support a local business.

A chill spot to relax, catch up with friends, drink a beer and watch some sports. Service is friendly, and most importantly their sandwiches are delicious. They also have a bar. I got a custom turkey sandwich with a side of potato wedges- absolutely delicious! I will definitely be coming back for more!

This place is equal parts deli and sports bar/craft beer bar. The space, located in a strip mall, itself is not very huge, but it seriously might have the largest craft beer selection to square foot ratio I've ever seen. Everyone here from the deli to the beer counter is friendly. And so are the patrons/regulars. Came here after work finally after having this place bookmarked for years. I came specifically for the Russian River flight that included Pliny for President. I also ordered the Big B - a large hot pastrami sandwich. The sandwich was very delicious and so was the beer. I wish this place was closer to me and would love to come back multiple times. Even struck up a conversation with other people here and they are very cool. My only warning is that this place is so great and it's small, this place could get packed very easily. Definitely a great spot for me to hit up when I'm driving through or even as a destination (since I live pretty far). Because it is in a strip mall, there was plenty of parking.

I stopped in here last week for the first time and I had a tuna melt in mind. I was thinking of toasty bread and tuna that would taste like Poseidon himself caught. Well I got the opposite of that lol. My sourdough bread wasn't toasted. It was actually pretty soggy and the lettuce was limp. For $15 I expected a solid sandwich and I was pretty disappointed. I'm guessing they have other options that might've been better but I don't think I'll be back.

Hidden gem! Girlfriend found this place on our way down to San Diego and it's amazing. Don't expect it from the outside, but the food is incredible. I got the hot pastrami and it honestly might be the best I've ever had. Service was also great. 10/10

I was a bit skeptical when I saw this Deli with a wall full of taps. Upon walking into the door I was like a kid in a candy store when I saw the amount of taps on hand, but still had my doubts about the food. I ordered the super sized O.G sandwich, which sealed the deal. We're talking about toasted bread with a generous serving of protein and crisp veggies. I will definitely visit again. read more

Ugh parking is probably the only issue this place has. So many little shops in one little spot is hectic. It was empty when I got there but soon filled up for lunch! All sandwiches, some salads like egg and tuna. From pastrami, tuna melts, blt's turkey. I saw about 15 different types of sandwiches not to sure. Sides included chili beans and small portions of salads. You can make it a combo for 3.50 more. Chips or salad drink and sandwich I ordered the tuna melt and it was amazing!!!!!! You can order didnt sized sandwiches too. Dont even get me started on beer varieties! Heaven for a guys night out. Had movies on as well. read more

Well I must say when I came to this place I really wasn't expecting much. It's a little hole in the wall, in a small shopping center off of Florence in Downey, anyway this first thing I notice is (((DAYUMM)))) what a beer selection!!! Wish I didn't have a million things to do today, otherwise It would be a happy sampling day for me. That said time to focus on they're sandwiches, I order the tba or something like that basically a turkey club. I must say I wasn't expecting the young kid in the back to put much love into the sandwich, but to my surprise he put his heart and soul into this bad boy. Yes this is just what I needed a tasty sandwich on a ruff day, God I could use one of those beers, but oh we'll I'll wait till next time. So overall I give this joint 4 1/2 .......wait what am I saying that was the best sandwich I've had in quite some time 5 it is keep up the good work Uncle Henry's and uncle E will return in drinking mode! read more

I have gone to Uncle Henry's about 10 times but this last time was different. Before I'd go and taste their beers until I found a perfect match, then I'd order a nice fresh sandwich t accompany it. This time I went up to the bar and asked for a small sample of a stout. The gentleman behind the counter said they didn't do samples and that I had to buy a 10 dollar flight in order for me to sample. Note I had been here many times before and had received small samples of their beers before committing to one. After he told me there were no samples I decided not throw away my money on a drink that was disgusting. I did not order a beer. I then ordered a sandwich, a B.L.T. Simple enough no one can mess that up. When I received the sandwich there were no pickles on the side as before, there were two slices of the thinnest tomatoes I have ever had on a sandwich (McDonalds has nicer tomatoes), lasty the sandwich had one thin layer of lettuce . The quality did not match the 12+ dollar price tag. I left Uncle Henry's Deli feeling hungry and extremely let down. This place used to be great but I won't be going back anytime soon. read more

A few months ago, I was hungry and decided to stop by the deli. Had not been there in a few years. The entire place was redone, and so was the menu. I can't tell you how much I love Uncle Henry's Deli. My favorite is the tuna sandwich. You can order three different sizes. Today I decided to order the veggie delight and asked for it vegan, no cheese or Mayo and asked for honey mustard. I have to tell you it is the best vegan sandwich I've ever had. It's loaded with cucumbers, tomato, lettuce, red onion, avocado, black olives, red peppers and pepperoncinis! I didn't miss the Mayo or cheese because of the creamy avocado and the flavorful peppers. They also carry a large assortment of craft beers and have Chimay on tap. Need I say more? Chimay on tap. I cannot wait to go back pick up some sandwiches and a Delirium 4 pack! read more

Great sandwiches paired with a vast selection of excellent beers--my review in a nutshell. I came for a quick sandwich and was greeted by a friendly staff and a variety of beers to compliment my meal. I found a few hard to find beers and combined my drink selection with the Italian Stallion sandwich for a satisfying experience. Planning to come back again with the wife for another meal real soon. read more

Have I really never reviewed this place? We stop by here as often as we can going back and forth to LA. Every sandwich I've had has been delicious and the staff is always friendly and accommodating. Not a lot of room to sit when it's drinking time - great selection of beers to choose from, too. Oink and Goggle is probably our favorite, but try anything and you'll probably love it! read more

Went here for the first time today and absolutely loved it. The gentleman taking my order was super friendly even though I wasn't immediately let in the store because of COVID-19 but that's the rules. Had a tba sandwich which was incredible and a beer to go. Ok gotta give a shout out to yelper's for this place or else I probably wouldn't have tried it. To start out I give Uncle Henry's Deli an A+ for their beer selection. If you love micro brew this is the place to go to. An A+ for the quantity of meat that are in the sandwiches. The service was really friendly and informative on the types of beers. Where I feel the grading went down was in the bread. I know they don't make their own bread, so I think they need to find a new supplier for bread. The meats were very fresh tasting, but I feel that the bread can make you or break you when it comes to sandwiches. I would come back here to sample more beers and wine and maybe the hot sandwiches. That being said, I still hive UHD four stars. read more

Small Deli with great service and sandwiches. Group of four and we all had pastrami different ways. Thumbs up by all four. Sauerkraut, potato salad and slaw all were great! This place has SO MANY beers on tap only with a wall of imported bottled beers. Need to go back with my husband....he will be in heaven! Definitely will go back and try more sandwiches. Also will do some take out. read more

I had a whole outline for this review where I wanted to talk about the ambiance (clean and welcoming) and the food (fresh, plentiful, and reasonably priced) but I'd rather talk about the beer experience at Uncle Henry's. OMG this is what you come to this place for. I'm a big fan of Russian River beers like Blind Pig and Pliny the Elder, so the fact that Uncle Henry's has them as part of their extensive tap selection already gets high marks from me. And that's just the start. From crisp IPAs to deep, dark stouts, Uncle Henry's has what you want, plus beers you didn't know you wanted until you got there. All the beers are high quality, fresh and memorable. If you're looking for something to enhance that delicious corned beef on rye that you ordered from the deli, they've got something that'll pair perfectly. Want something off the wall and memorable? Brace yourself for awesomeness. I had a french toast stout on my last visit and I'm pretty sure I was having a religious experience. Hands down, one of the most incredible beers I've ever had and my man George was the one that opened my eyes to the dark magic brewers use to make beers extraordinary. If you're looking for a place where you can just pound Corona after grinding through another 10 hours at your dead-end job, you'd better pass on this place, son. Uncle Henry's ain't for you. Now, if you want to get an education on what it means to experience Real Beer, then head to the bar and talk to George or any of their knowledgeable and friendly staff and get ready for your day to get dialed up to 11. Uncle Henry's is a must-visit deli for beer fans, and you'll find yourself lamenting that your city doesn't have a place like it. These guys are the real deal. read more

Damn do I love this place. I work in the area and even if I've brought my own lunch, if someone mentions an Uncle Henry's run, I'm there. Fast service and great quality, it's clear that this is a spot that knows what they're doing. My favorite is the Turkey Bacon Avocado. So good! read more

Came in here and wasn't sure what to get but the girl at the register gave me a few suggestions and I chose the Big B. It was amazing! The portions are great excellent customer service from the young lady Vicky in front and the boys in the back making the sandwiches were on top of it all. A really neat place. Sandwiches are delicious, large portions for a decent price. Small medium large sizes, ranging between seven dollars and $15. I ordered a medium, 10 bucks. Huge sandwich, great taste, friendly staff. A lot of the local beers on tap if you want one of those, great vibe to this place. I'll definitely have to come back read more

I loved this place for sure! It was recommended to me by a waiter from a local big chain restaurant after I ordered an IPA from there. This place is small but has a lot to offer. The beer selection on tap & bottled is huge and the best in town hands down!!!! I ended up coming here with my son (which loves micro brews as I), daughter in law and wife to give it a try and weren't disappointed. We tried quite a few IPAs, Double IPAs, & Imperials. The food is good, you could even build your own if you want to change it up a bit. They serve Hot & Cold sandwichs and sides. I ordered a Ruben on rye which was good. The place is small with little tables and benches. I highly recommend this place. read more

This is probably the coolest deli spot I've been to since I used to visit the one in my old neighborhood. They have hella options and have something for everyone. They have over 20 different beers on tap most of which are local and bonus they have 5 tv's that have either football soccer or baseball on depending on the time you come. They have a really good variety of side options too and offer cookies to go. Wish they had better seating but considering it's not the biggest spot I totally understand that maybe they could get some outside tables to accommodate the overflow of people if they truly wanted to have more patrons but it's worth the wait no big deal lol read more

Check out our draft selection at taphunter.com We also have wine, a chardonnay and Pinot Noir on draft as well as a selection of craft ciders and meads. We have a 300+ bottle selection for to go only. Our online store will be hp in the summer. Plus: Pint Nights (most Tuesdays) Tap Take Overs (most Thursdays) Beer Events Beer Pairing Dinners (pre-sale tickets) All of our sandwiches are amazing, it really depends what YOU like. Our sizes do NOT increase in length (like 6in and 12in), rather we put more meat and go up, since we use sliced bread. We are KID- friendly. In the process of this convo they let a woman wearing flip flops in. When I pointed that out the security said "it is part of an outfit" - they should add that to their list of rules... Clearly they are able to make exceptions for people that look a certain way, and not for others. We had a party of 15 inside; they charged them 10 for water without mentioning to them that there is a cost. Overall, while I understand that rules are rules. It is clear that the security and management only make these rules for certain people.

absolutely the best sandwiches anywhere... eat here once and you will never go to Subway or Quiznos again... oh, be sure to bring a big appetite... they don't know the meaning of small... my favorite is the Italian Stallion, but you can't go wrong with anything there... for something different, try a Special Mix where the potato salad is right in the sandwich along with whatever meat, etc. you want on it... originally only sold deli meat when Henry opened the doors in 1969 as Henry's Meats and started making the Special Mix sandwich for special customers a year or two later... despite not letting the public know they made sandwiches, the Special Mix became locally famous... in the late 70's Henry passed the business on to his nephew George who turned it into what it is today and still runs it along with his son and daughter... read more

Stopped into Uncle Henry's Deli 5 years ago and WOW! What a GREAT sandwhich shop...no comparison to Subway or Quiznos. The amount of meat they put on their regular sandwhich is PLENTY without asking for double. I really love the turkey and avocado on rye. The bread there is amazing too. Whenever we drive thru Downey we also stop in for a great meal. It's family owned and the family is really cool. Always feel welcome and well accomidate. The beers on tap choices here are literally endless. You can go every day and get three different beers every time and by the time you tried them all(about 100) they'd actually have switched a few out. Then there's the bottles of beer(probably 300) that are available for carry out only. And mother of god the sandwiches. Insane. My personal favorite is the beef dip. It's amazing. read more
