This place gets my vote for sure. Traveled here from long beach and it was well worth it. It is located in a strip mall on the corner. It is a small place with limited seating. Deli counter that you step up to and order. You can eat there or to go. Plenty of beers on tap or buy a bottle of wine to go or drink there and play a corkage fee. Variety of bread options and meat options. I had the turkey bacon and avocado on a roll. It was huge and yummy. A small is plenty and u can make it a combo with potato salad, macaroni salad or chips. Everything was good. My husband had the super pastrami and he said he loved it. We will definitely be back again. The staff was super friendly and offered great choices. They were knowledgeable about the menu. They made sure we had no other needs as we sat and ate. There are TVS for watching also. read more

I work and live in Downey for the past couple years now and had never seen this place before! I'd always heard about it and my husband had even mentioned how amazing it is, but never had i been. This gem is tucked away! It's pretty small inside so if you have a large group of folks coming to eat, maybe it'd be better to get something to go but man oh man does it look cool. There's an entire wall of beers on tap! Pretty awesome. If you want to order food, take the paper menu that's on the table because although the menu they have on the wall is well written, a lot of the writing is tiiinyyy. (or maybe i'm just getting old lol). Anyway, on to the important stuff - THE FOOD. I tried the hot ham and cheese and the T.B.A. (turkey, bacon, avocado). That way, we got to try a hot and cold item. Man oh man all I have to say is WOW. The food was amazing. The mustard in the hot ham and cheese did the trick. If you like spicy food, ask for the chipotle sauce. Sucks that you get charged for it, but it's totally worth it. The heat sneaks up on you from behind and BAM! hits you real hard. I would have given this place a better rating if the guy wore gloves but since he didn't, my rating of course will be less then the fact. The place has been around since 1959 and the place has that old fashion type of feel. Small and sporty with their flat screen tvs set on the soccer game on. In the back is a wall full of beer on tap. Totally hit my craving needs for a deli sandwich. But what made this yelp rating so low if service and food was on point? No gloves. Although there isn't any laws against deli meat cutters from wearing gloves, it just makes me feel like its more sanitary to wear them. If I had known from the beginning I wouldn't have ordered and just walked out of this establishment. But since the gentleman had already made half my sandwich.. As uncomfortable as I felt I still ate it since it was paid for already. I didn't see him wash his hands even after making my sandwich. While sitting there eating, I noticed they took phone orders. Again, he picked up the phone, took the order, hung up and just started on the sandwich. Kind of makes me regret eating the one I bought now because who knows what else he touched before I came in. If it was more sanitary this place definitely deserves a 4-5 star rating. But given that I noticed small details that made the food a bit unsanitary, especially for me since I'm pregnant and anything and everything I eat must be clean... Makes this place a go to spot if you don't care about clean food. Wish I could say I would be a returning customer but given the circumstances, I sadly will not. This place would definitely get 5 stars from me but there's an issue that can't go on within it being addressed. The food is great and the beer selection is wonderful. The atmosphere is cool, a place where you can grab a drink and just hang out with friends. But lately it's service is declining. When I go there I like to order the beers I like. If they don't have it it's fine. They have others to choose from. No big deal. But it seems now every time I go in and order my beer they serve me a beer that I didn't order. When I try to explain that it isn't the beer I order they try to lecture me, basically saying I'm wrong. I'm sure they don't know every beer they serve and it's ok. But they shouldn't try lecture anyone without the knowledge. This wasn't once or twice. It's been three times. I would love it if I could talk to the manager. read more

My friend and I are getting really bored with the lack of food establishments in the Downey area near our job and are constantly looking for different places to try. I found this deli through good ol' yelp. It's a small deli shop wedged in between a few other shops which can be easily overlooked and the parking lot can get a bit crowded. Upon entering....the establishment is a bit dim but you first notice the amazing supply of all kind of beers that lined up their wall and a small bar in the back with a bartender. Tables are situated down the middle of the deli and a counter near the deli meats where you can place your order. I chose the tuna melt on sourdough and my friend ordered the pastrami. They were quick in their service and the portion size was generous. My tuna was nice and hot with gooey cheese. Veronica enjoyed her pastrami and peppers. One guy near our table ordered a flight of beer and was impressed with the line up. I am glad we found this place, I definitely see myself coming here more often and trying out different sandwiches. A future catering order will be a must. Btw, they do cut fresh meats and cheeses. read more

Insane. Out of Bounds. Whoaaaa. Those are the words that pop through my head when I'm biting into one of Uncle Henry's sandwiches. I first tried them 3 years ago and wasn't much of a fan... but wow 3 years does change alot. My first bite in 3 years was from the Italian Stallion sub. Everything just tasted right. The meats were so nice and tender that it melts in your mouth and the Italian dressing was just a bonus. I'm finally writing a review because I just had the Reuben sandwich. Man.... The kraut... the mayo... pickles... the beef... all wonderful. I've had alot of sandwiches in my day (look at my belly for evidence) and this one is probably one of these best sandwiches I've ever had. It wasn't messy, greasy, or overwhelming... It's just right. I usually love this place. but not today. This place is great for COLD sandwiches. I had a craving for a pastrami sandwich today so I went and got one. I was quite disturbed by what I saw as they made my sandwich. 1) I do not approve of warming up my pastrami meat on the floor of the microwave...yes the floor, no tray. The guy just scooped it up with a spatula off the bottom of the microwave floor. Even if this was a pastrami only microwave, that's still not sanitary. And even if they had a tray that they kept in there, it's still not sanitary to use it over and over again without cleaning. 2) I also don't approve of the other guy with a beard stick his bare hand (which I did not see him wash, so maybe he did or didn't, but I don't think he did as I never saw him by a sink) into a bucket of pickles and transferring them to another tray. As for the sandwich, it really sucked, it wasn't very good at all. The pastrami itself was dry, thin, looked like it came out of a package at the grocery store. It really didn't look like pastrami at all. Now if I have a craving for a pastrami or brisket sandwich, I go to Katella deli, it's worth the drive. This Deli does not disappoint and is very generous with the servings. I ordered " The Original" and it more than met my taste buds. Food was decent...reason for 2 stars: the EXTREMELY drunk and obnoxious customers inside a DELI... We were excited to come here for a sandwich and beer. However, when we walked in, I felt like I walked into a men's club. There were 10 men in there and I was the only female. It was awkward, as 75% of them were obliterated drunk. After ordering our food, we sat down and as per usual, we wanted to talk to each other...that was not happening as our attempt at conversation was overpowered by the drunks sitting behind us and dropping racist remarks left and right. The workers here should have said something. It was uncomfortable and made for a really bad experience. I have never been at an establishment that has allowed this to occur. They had me once I saw all the Bootleggers Brewery beers they had on tap. Aside from those, they have a total of 31 craft beers on tap that is so rare to find anywhere let alone Downey. Great prices on beer too. Once I got over the beer selection I actually tried the food and the sandwiches are just as good! French dip sandwich was better than Philippes, yes I said it! This place was on our way home from Santa Barbara and was absolutely worth the 15 minute detour. We ordered the Sicilian (the spicier sexier Italian Stallion) and the Big B (the hubs). Both were amazingly fresh and very flavorful. The bread was very soft and fresh not rubbery or synthetic tasting. The Big B was tied for the best pastrami I've had of all time... it is a classic hog pastrami with a twist--BACON! The hubs is a beer enthusiast and lived all the draught beer. They must have had more than 50 beers on tap. Great little spot, do not judge a book by its cover (you'll see when you arrive). Definitely will be back any time we're on the way home from LA area. Consider Uncle Henry's the perfect example of a "man's man's" lunch spot, but too damn good for us girls to resist, too. I was in the area so stopped by to kill time here to avoid rush hour traffic on the 5 freeway. 5 stars for draft beer and small, curated craft beer bottle selection. Many Almanac and Bruery beers on tap. I was tempted to buy bottles here such a sour from Anchorage Brewing I have never seen before. Sandwich, their most popular, was just OK. I had the Italian meats sandwich and I didn't like the bread and felt the sandwich was too salty for my taste. I ate it so it can absorb the alcohol from the beer. I have had better sandwiches in my neighborhood, such as Cricca's and Cavaretta's. Next time I come back, I will stick to the draft beer flight and not the sandwiches. There's a place next door I'd like to try for food. The entire staff is super friendly!!! This is a no frills or thrills deli that currently serves over 90 beers on tap. Their prices are standard but the selection of beer here is truly impressive. Their sandwiches and fries are decent but are mostly there to soak up the booze. This isn't a place to impress your date or if you expect to chill at a neighborhood "Cheers" bar. Cool hang-out spot. I wish this place was closer to my house. I can spend an entire afternoon here The restaurant is a small deli w/ 70+ revolving beers on tap (it changes every week). Beers are reasonably priced at $5-$6 a pint/tulip. They have respectable taps like Ballast Point, Stone, Speakeasy, Avery, Allagash, Goose Island, Hangar 24, Delirium, & Chimay. The workers are suuuuuuper friendly and really knowledgeable about beers. One of the workers was explaining a beer on tap, the ABV%, the type of beer, where it's from, and other beers like it. He repeated this process for 4 more beers. I respect that. We split 3 sandwiches between 2 people. It was enough food. Italian Stallion, cold (Slightly average, 3.5/5) - I enjoyed the sandwich. It's got 3 different types of meats & cheeses. My only gripe was they use a tad too much vinegar/oil dressing. The Bomber, cold (Slightly average, 3.5/5) - w/ 4 slices of bread, 1 pound of meat, and the usual sandwich toppings. It tasted OK. The sandwich is pretty tall so it's hard to eat; you can't taste all the ingredients in a single bite so it tastes weird when you eat the "last half" of your sandwich. So good! I found this place on Yelp and checked it out not knowing at all what to expect. It's in a strip mall so I thought, oh it could go two ways--really generic or quaint. I lived in Arizona long enough not to assume restaurants in strip malls are generic, so I didn't judge and I'm glad I didn't. It's a very cool little deli/dive, with fresh food and a large number of beers on tap. We ordered a veggie delight and a Avocado, turkey and cheese sandwich. Delicious and well worth the price. This sandwich set the bar for me. It's the kind of sandwich that you'll crave after it's been eaten. Didn't get any beer this time but I'll definitely come back with some friends to hit it up in the evening. I had actually been looking for a chill bar type place to hang and get a few brews.
