After many years since our last visit, we came to celebrate the winter solstice tonight with a family dinner. My dad got the T-Bone special at medium (originally it was only meant for the 23rd onwards) which was allowed because the original owner was present tonight. My mom got the Certified Angus medium. I got the New York steak for myself at rare doneness. For the soup that came with I upgraded mine to French Onion and my parents took the regular/daily which was also accompanied by garlic bread-ish. Additionally, I got a Long Island Iced Tea and in the process of it caught a conversation between Kitchen and Old Owner that their ice machine is broken so I have NO IDEA where the ice for my drink came from--other than that it tasted fine and the old owner personally made it. T-Bone was not up to par. It was exceedingly tough according to my dad and inconsistently cooked. It was closer to a medium well than a medium rare-medium and subsequently whether from improper prep or age of the cut, it wasn't juicy. From what I witnessed when I did look up at my dad, it was tough to cut no matter how small or large he sliced it. Certified Angus was passable. My mom didn't have many complaints nor praises so take that as you will. Could tell at a glance the vegetables were the family pack frozen ones from Costco. My New York Steak was passable-ish. The fat cap wasn't rendered down properly and the steak itself was slightly tough in certain areas. The doneness was fine at rare, but with all this in mind--if you want a consistent cook medium to well seems to be the way. My problem mainly with the food lies in seasoning and ingredient quality. The vegetables are for some reason visually and texturally rough and fuzzy? They melt in your mouth in the worst way possible. There is no crunch, not even on the carrot. It was mush, plain and simply, same with the mashed potatoes. No seasoning aside from gravy and actual mush it was melting every forkful into my mouth. No hint of garlic, butter, milk or cream--just bland potato mush with gravy. Ambiance? Nothing at all. I don't know what to describe it other than quiet and empty. There was one other table aside from ours and one take-out order. From the bits of conversation with the old owner, I gleaned that at the turnover at first, regulars were aplenty but they tapered off and dwindled as time went on and that looks to be accurate based on reviews here on Yelp and over on Google. Business has been slowing down and much of it is attributed to the declining quality both in service and food/ingredients. The new owners of the establishment bought this restaurant for the brand name but didn't upkeep the standard for food, quality, and service. There's just no business acumen from the new owners from what I can see based on reviews of this year and my experience tonight. The old owner was the saving grace for this visit on Saturday December 20th, otherwise the rating might drop to a 1 or 2 out of 5. read more

Several months ago, I saw an online content creator trying the Pork Hock dish at Uncle Joes Family Restaurant which catch my attention. After trying this restaurant for three times (two dine-ins and one take out). I believe it time for me to share my thoughts on this Hidden Little Gem. First of all, I love the classic interior décor of this family restaurant. It like time travelling back to the 70's. Secondly, the lady owner is very welcoming and friendly, just felt like home. Last but not least, the food is excellent and some of the items are comparable to five stars downtown restaurants. Let further discuss some of my favourite must try items at Uncle Joes Family Restaurant. French Onion Soup: Every time I visit a western restaurant, the first thing I order from the menu is their French Onion soup. The French Onion soup usually turn out to be a disappointment but not at this place. The cheese on top is just the right portion and not over boiled. The onions are well-caramelized but not over-caramelized. The onion soup broth is just pure onion sweetness and not salty at all. This is very difficult to achieve, as the soup base will become more concentrated when keep warming during the day. I tried their French Onion soup both at lunch and dinner time, they managed to maintain their soup base not too salty. Their French Onion soup is on par with the La Société restaurant (now closed), which in my opinion served the best French Onion soup in Toronto. Pork Hock: They do not serve the German style crispy skin pork hock which most people might expect (including myself) but it is not a bad thing. Their pork hock slow roasted extremely well. It is very tender, moist inside and flavourful. The pork skin is super jelly and full of collagen. Overall, this is the best pork hock I have tried in GTA. Rib Eye Steak: I was very surprise when I took the first bite of the Rib Eye steak. I did not expect a family style diner will able to grill near Toronto high-end steakhouse quality steak. The pleasant grill smoky flavour of steak is very appetizing and not overpowering. The chef grills the steak exactly to your desired doneness. The meat quality is decent as well. I should have listened to the lady owner and have my steak in medium doneness instead of medium rare, as the fat marble will melt and further enhance the flavour. Liver & Onions: It is very difficult to cook ordinary ingredients and turn it into an amazing dish. Their Liver & Onions is one of those dishes. The liver is lightly cutlet and cooked just right, not over or undercooked. The onions are well-caramelized but not over-caramelized. Their gravy is not too salty at all. All these simple ingredients combine created the best Liver & Onions dish I have tasted in the last decade. Ice Cream Sundae: I pretty sure you can buy the same ice cream at a local supermarket but the way the chef presented this Sundae and the classic décor surrounding makes me think this is the best Sundae in the world (totally psychological). Please refer to my sundae photo. Overall, my family and I enjoyed dinning at this family restaurant and you are getting near Steakhouse quality at Diner prices. Keep up the good work. read more

3.5 stars is a bit more accurate probs but I had a pretty decent time! Nice small restaurant with both breakfast and lunch foods. Parking is pretty easy to find and prices are not too expensive! service was alright but nothing super standout-ish. I got the Cajun burger which came with fries ($11) and ordered some extra fries on top ($2). Thought the burger was decent but nothing extravagant. The fries were good but I love fries in general so it's hard for me to give a bad review for fries unless they're REALLY bad. Decent food and decent service on decent prices. So, I was visiting my partners family and they had decided to take a group of us here because another restaurant was fully booked. I would say that the service was great but the food was okay. I feel the food is definitely overpriced. The ambiance is very mom and pop feel. It wasn't very busy at all. So we got quite a bit of attention. As for the food, somewhat food was bland and some just not prepared well. I do not believe I'd come back to this location. I've tried several of their menu items, but I usually get the Uncle Joe's burger because you can't get a burger like that at their price in many other places. I am not exaggerating when I say my family tries to schedule our familiar outings to go here! The restaurant is headed by a cute Chinese woman that gossips with my mom and is super nice. I do have to say, the establishment looks a little dated but us Chinese people, we care about the FOOD. They have an array of selections but highly highly advise on getting the fish and chips and their steaks. It ranges in the $20s; so you would think it's not the best quality. BUT DAMN ITS A+++, ASIAN PASS! I have dreams about this steak. They also have great appetizers such as their French onion and their cheesy garlic bread. We also had their cheesecake and apple pie with ice cream. At this point, I'd just recommend everything. If you are looking for Hong Kongstyle steakhouse dining experience, this is the best place to go in Markham. Environment: old-fashioned European style decor. Although this place has been open for decades, but it's well maintained. Food: we ordered 1 appetizer, 2 main courses and 1 dessert. All the main course comes with a free small appetizer (choice of salad or soup of the day) and a side dish ( choice of fries or mashed potatoes) Appetizer: - cream of seafood chowder: creamy, flavourful. - grilled calamari: calamari is fresh, perfectly cooked, well seasoned Main course: - braised lamb shanks: the lamb shank is juicy and tender, the sauce match perfectly with the lamb shank. I ordered the fries for the side and luckily I made the right choice. The fries is one of the best fries I have ever had in Toronto. There are so many great places to eat in Main Street Unionville, so I was unsure of what to expect when I entered Uncle Joes. The exterior isn't aesthetically pleasing, and inside isn't much better either. However, I was very surprised by the quality of their food considering how affordable the prices were. I ordered a Club House Sandwich. The fries were extra crispy and the sandwich was a nice big serving. My friends and I came here during lunchtime on a Saturday but the restaurant was quite empty. We were quick to get in, the service was fast, and the lady serving us was very friendly. Hey I'm not saying that this is the best thing ever. I've probably ate more interesting and tastier food in the area, but this is the best bang for your buck. My sandwich and fries came to $9 (!!!) - that price can't be beat! Simply traditional western style restaurant food in the $$ range. I got the ribs and chicken combo ($24), my mom got lamb shank ($18), and my dad got grilled chicken ($15). Decor is dated, and in a sense, cute. It's quite dark in the foyer but it's much brighter inside. Spacing is quite comfy and you don't feel claustrophobic. The servers have uniforms and that's great because it ups the ambience. I'd recommend this place for families but it's a cute date place as well. Food was a solid 4/5. My mashed potatoes had some lumps. I prefer totally creamy mash that melts in your mouth but they didn't have that. It was very potatoey. I think they don't use cream in their mash recipe but it was alright. The gravy was decent enough to make for that. Ribs were great! My combo has a ton of meat. I eat a lot, and this is one entrée that actually made me feel full. Veg was flavourful with the few spices and herbs they used. I'd totes recommend this combo. The lamb shank came with carrot sauce which was very fitting for the strong taste of lamb. Texture was alright but I don't think they marinated or seasoned the lamb enough, if at all, before they poured the sauce. I still liked it, but not as much as the ribs and chicken. They don't come with drinks except for plain tea or water. I got tea. It was yum! The soup we had was cream of veg and it was delicious. That hint of kale helped up the favour. Would have preferred a few mushrooms to make the taste more complex. I recommend this place for sure. Prices are average. I'm not sure why this restaurant is sitting at 3.5 stars. I think this place is below average, and here's why (I'm basing this on the one time I've been - maybe I just had a bad experience). The food is mediocre at best and it doesn't taste like anything special. All it does is fill you up. I came here after my boyfriend's friend recommended it. I did also check out the yelp reviews (but only looked at the rating at that time). We decided to give it a go for brunch on the weekend. From the outside, it looks like a tiny shop but it's big on the inside and we were seated promptly. I was already disappointed when I walked in because I was misled to believe that it was Italian cuisine, but it was just an Asian-run Western-style restaurant. I didn't like the atmosphere inside (it was loud and felt like a dim sum restaurant). The decor was dated. There were crumbs on my table before I even sat down. No, they didn't bother wiping it. I had to wipe it off. The food was inexpensive and came in large portions in comparison to other brunch places. I personally could not finish my Eggs Benny. The service was very "meh" and I suppose it was because they were quite busy as it was a weekend. Salad is salad but it did have some flavour in it from the sauce, the soup was adequate, onion rings tasted like the ones from McCain (which I like so I'm not complaining), and the garlic bread was fairly tender although it wasn't bursting with flavour. The size of the main dish was huge! Trying out the steak first, it wasn't evenly cooked throughout but it was generally OK. Everything else on the plate just like the steak was OK. I have got to say for such a low price, they give you a lot of food. I was completely stuffed and didn't even get to finish my main dish. I can't expect any more from this place considering the portion sizes that they serve. Fries were likely from McCains, which were tasty and gravy was from the powdered varieties. The french onion soup had an offputting taste to it, I didn't enjoy it at all. My husband ordered the lamb, and he felt the same way, it was something he could easily replicate at home. Our family also ordered the pork hock, which was one of the daily specials, and the pork ribs and shrimp. The pork hock was huge, but it tasted like boiled meat in Chinese soups. Service was pretty efficient as our food came out fast, which on the flip side, meant that everything was pre-made. Uncle Joe's is a Chinese family owned restaurant on Main St. Markham that is basically a steak house. I have come here several times already and our family is always greeted by the little cute Asian lady who loves to talk to all the regulars and new customers alike. They have a great selection of high quality steaks and if meat isn't your vibe, then perhaps try their fish or pasta and the prices are reasonable although they have raised them up recently. They also have their specials written on a cue card if you fancy those. Usually they are the Pork hocks, lamb chops, or some kind of lobster special during the holidays. You have a choice of soup (seafood cream soup or beef barley, but it may change) or salad, mash potatoes/fries and everyone is served super tasty garlic bread. The chefs always cook the steak to perfection and the veggies are buttery and flavourful. They usually don't have many servers so you'll see two running around but are always efficient and the food comes in a timely manner. With the holidays coming up, this place is going to be packed daily so make your reservations if you want a spot. You'll probably see me there too over the holidays. read more

Pros: Food came out quickly and inexpensive. Waiter service was great and when my dad and I needed something, the young male waiter was quick to get what we wanted. Cons: I actually called in earlier this afternoon to book a table under my last name, but they didn't write it down and so we were treated as walk-in guests and we were given the bill when we didn't ask for it before we even finished drinking our milk teas and coffee. I had a bad experience with this restaurant before, we ordered the leg of lamb two years ago back in Christmas time in advance and they gave our leg of lamb to a bunch of walk-in guests that came before us. Since then, I noticed their service especially the female owner of the place didn't really improve.We were rushed to pay our bill because the female owner said there are guests who reserved the table arriving at the restaurant. The food: My dad ordered the Spring Lamb and it was pretty tasty with 6 pieces of lamb and the meat was tender. With the mint sauce it was the best combination. It came with mashed potatoes and some veggies. My dad said it was filling. I ordered the turkey dinner and it came with fries and some veggies. I think the turkey was decent but nothing to write home about. My sister's in-laws can make turkey at least equally as good if not better than the turkey I had tonight. Overall: 6 to 7 out of 10 stars I never tried the leg of lamb so would probably come back to this restaurant to try it at some point maybe Christmas this year. But they need to improve on their services regarding taking calls and reserving tables and not giving something we ordered in advance to other walk-in guests just because they showed up before us. read more

I really don't know how I would classify Joe's as a restaurant. Yelp claims it's Italian, and I don't know if I agree. It's a Chinese-owned steakhouse, and while they definitely serve Italian food, I don't think that's what they're known for. Of the four times I've been here, I've never NOT had the steak. You get a lot of bang for your buck at Joe's. Each steak meal (or seabass, salmon, or lamb) comes with a soup or salad, garlic bread, potatoes and vegetables, and are VERY reasonably priced. These are some pretty good-sized portions, too! I've tried the ribeye and the peppercorn steak, and the peppercorn is SO good. Also, I'm not one who dips their streak in gravy, but whatever the gravy is, it's delicious. I have learned the hard way that if you order "medium rare", your steak is still mooing, so just keep that in mind! read more

We've almost always only come here for breakfast but lunch items are usually available by 11AM as well. AMBIANCE: 3/5 Uncle Joe has a confusing interior. The first room (with the booths) is definitely newer and has a sleek vibe with polished wood. The room in the back with the tables has worn down carpet & walls. Overall, I'm comfortable when I sit down but it would be nice if they decided to renovate a little for a better eating environment. FOOD: 4/5 The food here is super cheap for great quantities. 1. Eggs Benedict: Delicious, it also comes with ham that isn't listed on the menu - so beware if you're halal or vegetarian. The buns are crispy, the hollandaise sauce is very basic but does the trick, and the eggs are poached perfectly. 2. Beef Brisket Curry: actually not bad. The curry is Chinese style - means it's a little more savoury. The beef brisket was a little too overwhelming fatty for an 11AM meal but great for lunch time. 3. Pancakes: Pancakes here are a must. They're fluffy and big and filling. I always get whipped cream and strawberries on the side. SERVICE: 4/5 There's usually only 1 or 2 servers so they're running around. They will always accommodate in terms of food substitutions or table changes (to create bigger tables). I went there this past weekend with my family for my belated birthday dinner. Including me, there's four people in my immediate family so we decided to each get something different to try out their different dishes. I got a rack of lamb, my sister got veal parmesan, my mom got a new york steak, and my dad got grilled chicken. The salads were pretty normal, like nothing special, but my mom did compliment their Italian dressing. All four of us loved their bread. It was toasted, but oh so soft with light butter. While the rest of my family chose a salad over soup, I got the fish chowder. It was amazing. I'm a huge fan of soups and tried many different kinds. It was obvious that the ingredients in the chowder was all fresh and was not oily at all. Its consistency was just right, not too thick nor too watery. As for the entrees, they were amazing as well. I loved it when there's a bit of redness in my meats, and they were just cooked to the point as we requested. The mint sauce that came with my lamb was the best part of my entree. I've had lamb many times, but it was the first time that it came with such great mint sauce on the side. Near the end of it I felt like I want more lamb just to dip into the sauce. Their grilled chicken was also great. At first I thought it's probably nothing special, like ordinary chicken. But their chicken was so tender and you can just taste the gilled lines on the chicken..if this even makes sense. We also got baked potatoes as our sides and it came with a huge stand for compliments filled with their very own sour cream, bacon bits, and chopped onions. The atmosphere of the restaurant was also very nice. It had a very cozy family or neighborhood style. I've never written a yelp review before but had to write one for this place...would never go here again. The cream pasta tasted like pure salt and couldn't even make myself finish it. The waffles And pancakes were both mushy, chewy and cold. Would not recommend. read more

Very friendly Chinese owned restaurant I ordered egg Benedict and breakfast 2eggs 1bacon special. The food tasted good but nothing special. The English muffin from the benedict came soggy and the home fries did not taste fresh. What tasted good was the hollandaise sauce.. Just delicious. The service was attentive and funny. They were kind to tell us that they would be giving us complimentary coffee but ended up charging us anyway. No big deal Overall my experience here is always enjoyable because of the cosy,homey feeling, also brings back my childhood memories. Not to mention the price is cheap! read more

I am not writing this on my latest visit. The latest visit was terrible but other visits were OK. Location: This restaurant is located on main Street Markham, not unionville. There's on street parking on both sides of the street but there's also plenty of parking behind the building. This is a place we've come to every year before the Markham Santa clause parade, have been for almost 8 years. Menu: We normally get burgers and fries, kids have a pretty standard kids menu. Prices are great, food good, comes quick. It's a great combination. Decor: Decor is dated in the main part of the restaurant, but its fine. What we got: Last time we came was Saturday just before lunch. Decided to take advantage of the all day breakfast. We chose the eggs Benedict. NEVER GET THE EGGS BENEDICT. It was really terrible, mushy, cold, the hollandaise sauce was not like ant I had before. We had to scrape it off and even then it was terrible. I would feel terrible not warning others!! If this was a review of our last visit I'd have to say half a star. read more

Not sure what anyone is expecting when they go here. The food is cheap, service is quick and food tastes good. It is what it is - a diner on Main Street Markham. It's not a steak house - so don't expect top notch steak, because they use a flat top and like I said they are not a steak house. If i was in the mood for steak or Italian food, I would not go to a diner serving Canadian cuisine Who really cares where the owner & waitresses are from. Are you there to eat or get to know them? I would never expect 5 star dining at a diner that offers "traditional Canadian cuisine" on their sign. Some of my fav items: Potato skins - ample cheese, bacon & toppings - done right Breakfast - generous portions, crispy bacon - coffee is good which is a plus Clubhouse sandwich - one of my favs - they use fresh chicken not cold cuts like a lot of places do So many other items - no complaints - kids love it too I've been going to Uncle Joe's for almost 12 years now - maybe 3-4 times a year. Nice comfy family restaurant. Dishes were reasonably priced. Quality is consistent throughout many years. Very nice service by waitress. Steaks were always perfectly cooked to your preference and super moist. Pork chop is marinated but slightly dry. However their kitchen and washroom definitely need some cleaning. read more

Great spot!!! The hollandaise sauce is amazing and the coffee is out of this world! Friendly staff and very speedy service. The food is quite tasty and the decor is quite nice. The chandelier gives it a rustic look! It's good to see a family business buzzing with customers on an early Sunday morning. They support local business and advertise them on the plate mats which I thought is noble. A definite spot to try out :D read more

First time here. Its a small family style resturant run by chinese. Price is reasonable . Food suprice me is very good comparing other chinese chef cooking a steak. 3 of us order one halibut steak , pork chop with mushroom sauce , n 10oz new york steak. I also upgrade my soup to an onion soup for just for $3.5. This resturant definatly not the highend steak house , but with the price they have , you cant complain. I will come back for sure read more

A quiet place for weekday dinner. Apparently it gets pretty busy on the weekends. Great steak dinner. Perfectly done, almost crispy on the outside but totally tender on the inside. Haven't had steak that good in a while. Lamb shank stew is really flavorful but the meat is on the lean side. read more
