One of my favorite activities is to find a great breakfast place in each town I visit. We can mark Toledo off the list as Uncle John's was great - exactly the type of family diner that keeps the griddle warm all day. Very disappointed in my experience today at the restaurant. Upon arriving, we waited in the lobby to be seated for roughly 2 to 5 minutes(which normally would not be an issue!), and could see several staff members in the kitchen on their phone rather than assisting customers. The dividers and screens between the booths were clearly filthy. We did not see a single spray bottle or rag the entirety of our visit. Tables remained unbussed, aflnd staff seemed to be more interested in talking about tips and socializing than cleaning up. I would like to say that our server (Alex) was fantastic! She was polite and helpful. However I was greatly dismayed at the treatment of another customer by other staff members. As we were sitting to eat our meal, a woman came in for a pickup order and was told that she had never placed it. My mother and I listened to the entire ordeal. A server did attempt to figure it out and I was completely taken aback at the tone with which the situation was addressed. You know this is just an old fashioned breakfast place before breakfast places were fashionable. You can get many breakfast specials for $4.50 and that includes your coffee. If you want the big breakfast special it's $6.99. That one is 2 eggs, potatoes, 4 pieces of bacon, and either pancakes or toast along with coffee. They are open all day Incase you don't make breakfast and offer quite a variety of sandwiches and home cooked type comfort food. Coffee and service are also both good. First time going here and it was an awful experience. My fiancée and I were seated and got our drink order to the server(didn't know her name). We told her we needed to look over the menu before we ordered. They weren't really that busy but she got 2 more tables and proceeded to greet them and get drinks for them. 10mins pass and she doesn't even check on our table, not even to refill our coffee. She would just walk past our table and help her other tables with food orders and refills. She would look over at our table but continue to ignore us. After we got up to leave is when she finally acknowledged us and copped an attitude when I asked her why she was ignoring us. I don't recommend this place at all. I really hope the owner cleans up the staff, unless they just don't care either. read more

Worsts service I've ever had...ANYWHERE. Sat and waited over 25 minutes for our drinks, it took us to ask the manager for drinks before we actually received them. Employees just standing around not doing anything and when we asked one of them for drinks they just told our server and had to continue to wait for our drinks. The manager is for sure the son of the owners and is not qualified to be running a restaurant. If you read my review of Uncle John's next door (kinda) neighbor and rival pancake store, you will know that I am on the hunt for a new breakfast spot to be a regular at. I figured I would first try the next closest option. I did not think I could be more underwhelmed with Uncle John's than I was with Original, but I was. Atmosphere: 1 out of 5 stars Walking into Uncle John's, there are some cool pictures of Toledo and the hostess stand is a repurposed elementary school desk from the 1960's. Neat stuff there. Once you progress further through the restaurant, it gets weirder. If you didn't know better, you would think you were in a sports bar with all of the weird shit all over the walls. Included in the myriad of weird shit is a full sized canoe on the ceiling and a mounted deer head on the wall. Frankly, I cannot think of any restaurant where a deer head would be appropriate. The wall we sat along was full of creepy pictures of famous people from the past, all of which had dusty frames. Easily a minimum score from me for atmosphere. Cleanliness: 1 out of 5 stars All of the tacky decorations clearly do not get dusted often. Like I said, the wall of fame was dusty, along with the ledge that ran around the wall. Although that is kinda gross on its own, what's worse is that the table we were seated at wasn't clean. They also do not move the salt, pepper, etc. out of the way when they wipe down tables (if they do so at all), because it was sticky and there was plenty of food debris behind ours. Service: 2 out of 5 stars Once our waitress finally discovered us after 10 minutes of looking around at weirdness and debating leaving, she was fairly attentive, but unsure about my menu questions I had. Instead of asking, she just simply said she did not know. I am usually pretty needy with my refills, but she was at least on top of that. Food: 2 out of 5 stars The coffee was some sort of generic, bulk bought, bitter disaster. My incredibly small portion of corned beef hash was burned and served on a piece of lettuce, which was inedible, because the heat of the corned beef made it soggy. My pancakes were also overdone. My corned beef hash meal said on the menu that it came with "fresh sliced peaches." It came with exactly two sliced peaches, the minimum qualification for a menu item being plural. Those peaches were obviously from a can, because they were still drenched in that gross canned peach syrup goo. Seeing how they are stingy with their canned sides, despite the menu saying they're fresh, I have to assume nothing else here is fresh. You're simply buying an overpriced assortment of processed garbage. Cost: 2 out of 5 Prices are comparable to Original, which is really not a good thing. The food is overpriced for breakfast food and none of it was very good. I spent $27 with tax and tip on my girlfriend and myself. I should have walked out when I saw the place was dirty and I should have sent back my burnt food. I would say that next time, I would send the food back, but there will be no next time for me here. I'm in between giving UJ's 1 or 2 stars, but the experience was a turn off as a whole, so they leave me no choice. read more

Our original lunch spot was Original Pancake House, but we decided to check out Uncle John's instead per Michael U.'s recommendation. UJ's is a welcoming change from some of the breakfast places in Columbus, i.e. no sticky menus covered with syrups, sauces, and Hepatitis A. The chocolate pancakes were a must for this chocolate lover and, trust me, they alone warrant many more trips back to UJ's. Gooey and chocolatey, it could very well be a dessert in of itself. My parents opted for the savory offerings. My dad's fried fish was fried to golden brown perfection and wasn't too heavily breaded. It came with a side of a genetically mutated potato, I kid you not. When was the last time you saw a baked potato as big as a Chipotle burrito? My mom went with the chicken fingers, which were spot on with crispiness and taste. The UJ's potato wedgies that came with the dish was equally intimidating as the baked potato and could easily make for two entrees. Both entrees came with a side salad and roll as well. As good as the chocolate pancakes were, I'm going to have to order the Oreo Waffles next time and the other sweets options during subsequent visits. UJ's boasts a heterogeneous crowd -- from the immature college-goers to the pretentious older clientele to your normal folks. Service was quite courteous this time around and our food came out rather quickly, despite the ever-growing flow of diners. We then proceeded to Secor rd and ran into Uncle Johns pancake house. This place was also very packed but it was only about a 5 minute wait to seat us a 2. I ordered the portabello omelet, eggs Benedict and a large tomato juice. Everything came out in a reasonable amount of time. The place was very busy but that operate like a well oiled machine. Our waitress was very friendly and stayed on top of our table. the food was good but not spectacular. Definitely was a great breakfast fix. I plan on going again before I leave Toledo. read more

I came with my girlfriend and we were excited to try some local toledo pancakes. However after sitting down the experience turned sour. The table we sat down at was filthy and had sticky foodstuffs all over it. We waited for 5-10 minutes for someone to take our order and while we were waiting, people that arrived AFTER us were seated at the table next to us and their order was promptly taken. A few minutes later our order was taken. My girlfriends hot chocolate tasted like dirty dishwater with a hint of chocolate taste. When our orders came out, my girlfriend got hers first, and mine came 5 minutes later. Refills for my soda were non existent and we did not see the waiter for 15 minutes after they dropped off our food. After my meal was nearly done I got my refill. The food was decent but nothing too exciting. Pancakes were solid. And to top it all off at the end when we went up to pay, the line to pay was 12 people long. It took us another 10 minutes just to pay our bill. And on the way out, there is an employee who is at the main entrance taking peoples names for the hostess which to me made no sense. But he is between the two sets of doors. After we finally paid and headed out, he watched us as we pushed open the doors and not once got up to open them for us. I realize this is not a high class place but if someone is standing right by the door as a greeter you would think they would open the door for you. I may give this place one more chance but for now they get just 2 stars. I do not typically give 2 stars but they definitely deserved it today. read more

Here are some observations: Pros: -The menu is extensive and features specialties that are difficult to come by. -The place is always packed. -The food is better than average and is much less expensive than their competitive neighbors on the same block. Cons: -The staff is very young and inexperienced -The food can be heavy and greasy (but tasty) Conclusion: If you want a delicious, reasonably priced breakfast, head over to U.J.P. Support a long time local restaurant instead of IHOP and Waffle House. Uncle John's is clearly superior, to those garbage choices as well as the other national duds like Frisch's and Denny's. This was my first visit to Uncle John's, primarily because my husband had one of the free breakfast coupons from giving blood earlier this year. I wish I had remembered to try the chocolate pancakes! The hubby and I both got omlettes-I got the sausage & cheese with the John's potatoes (thin sliced, browned fried potatoes, smothered with cheese-they usually come with green peppers & onions also, I skipped those) & pancakes. Hubby got the Cajun omlette, also with the potatoes & pancakes. Since I'm used to the omlettes at Reynolds Garden, I couldn't help comparing them & found Uncle John's lacking in these. The omlette at UJ's was greasy, didn't have a lot of meat to it and was pretty bland tasting. The pancakes were good, but nothing exceptional. However, I do HIGHLY recommend the UJ potatoes, with or w/o the peppers & onions (whatever you prefer). These had a wonderful flavor & were just slightly crispy w/o being overly greasy. Give them a try next time! Overall, it wasn't a bad place, good service, interesting decor and a lot of other things on the menu to try instead of the omlettes. I'll be back! read more
