I had two delicious sandwiches and a great plate of shrimp today at Uncle Nicky's. Everything was excellent. I also noted that the bar is very well-stocked with the best brands of Amaro, including Lucano, Nonino, Braulio, and other true Italian favorites. I also saw Malfy lemon gin, a great cocktail spirit that you don't see most places, and Tempus Fuguit's cacao. Whoever stocked the bar knows his chicken. The food is great! I'll start with the not-amazing things just to get them out of the way; the beer selection sucks. The subway style order at the counter is kinda annoying, but it seems the concept is more about takeout and delivery than it is dine-in focused. The staff was nice enough, but did the bare minimum and spent more time in the kitchen eating than behind the bar being even somewhat attentive to us sitting at the bar and clearly wanting to try multiple things and spend money. They were in no way rude or short, just offered the attention you would expect from subway. Now the food? SO GOOD. The fonduta was TO DIE FOR... the house made focaccia was perfect, the marinated olives were really tasty, the Caesar salad was excellent (tasted more like Italian dressing randomly but fresh and tangy) and the pep rigatoni was excellent. The Italian sandwiches a table of wet, drunk pool goers from the adjacent apartments ordered looked amazing... will be back to try them! Stopped by for lunch (went out of my way for, to be precise!) and the tuna sandwich was spot on. It was the perfect size (I left full, but not bowled over from being so) and wasn't drenched in mayonnaise. The bun was pillowy and chewy - I overheard they get them shipped in from a bakery in NJ (I believe?). I love the addition of the banana peppers (or pepperoncinis?)...added a nice crunch as opposed to any heat. Enjoyed sitting at the counter and listening to a couple regulars shoot the shit with one of the staff. Good music, free wifi, and a few parking spots surround the place. I'd coin its vibe as upscale neighborhood diner that is also a bar vs anything else. I took two cookies to go. Usually I would have just gone with the chocolate chip one but something about that snickerdoodle disc of dough that had me say, what the heck, I'll do both! I'm so glad I did because the chocolate chip was fine, but the snickerdoodle was doodlerific! Ah! I absolutely love love this place! First of all, the location is right smack dab in the middle of Hyde Park and it's in a cluster of a lot of gems(Quacks, Julio's Cafe, Hyde Park Bar& Grill). There is a lot of parking out back so don't be alarmed when you see no available spots in the front. Walking into this place gave me that oldies/European coffee shop/diner feel if that makes sense. It's super clean with a lot of white accents and white walls and blue benches and blue accents. They have a happy hour from 2-5. The music playlist is beautifully selected, honestly, I think the music is part of the reason why I gave this place a 5 star rating. They were playing some good ol Marvin Gaye type of music and it was definitely setting the vibe I happened to order the Dolce Vita. It basically is a milk shake with rum in it. I usually don't like liquor, in fact, I usually hate all things alcohol, but this was amazing and dangerous! It was dangerous because I couldn't taste the alcohol and I could've easily had 3 haha. (Not really because it's actually HUGE). It was so delicious and refreshing. I recommend it! I also had a chocolate chip cookie and it was super yummy, it had a crunch to it but yet was soft on the inside and had both milk and semi sweet chocolate chips in it. Dolce Vita was a favorite place for many years! So it was nostalgic coming here after so long! The staff was awesome. The music was great. The food..... barely average. My man got the Italian sandwich, Mambo Italiano & it was good, not great but good. No chips, no fries, no potato salad, NO SIDE for $10!!! What? Ummmmm have you been fed by real Italians? NY Italian here (in ATX for 26 years). This is sad. I got the pasta with cream sauce. Great flavor but the smallest portion I've ever been served for pasta. With NO bread, wtf y'all?! That's an instant fail. You don't serve pasta with no bread. $12 for that?! Nope. And the beer was warm. Still love my old hood but I was bummed. I had high expectations coming here after hearing glowing reviews from friends, and they were just not met unfortunately. It's a cute little neighborhood spot in Hyde Park. There's ample parking in the back lot when we came in on a Saturday afternoon. Loved the coffee, can't say the same about the food. I got the breakfast sandwich which was okay, no frills, but it was just not remarkable. For $5, I guess you can't expect much. I think it's ballsy to offer as options 18%, 20% and 25% tipping when you order at the counter and grab your own water. They should offer a 10% and 15% option. I ordered through DoorDash and got the Alfredo with garlic focaccia and chocolate cruller. The Alfredo was perfect and I loved the noodles. I used the focaccia to soak up the left over Alfredo sauce. Were surprised to find that it resembles more of a modern coffee shop featuring a clean aesthetic and full bar vs. a mom-and-pop Italian restaurant. Lots of people typing away on laptops enjoying a glass of wine or gelato. We sat at the bar and ordered a ton of goodies. The prosciutto toast was delicious with ricotta and a chili jam drizzle. The bread here is so fresh and crispy and chewy. We also shared the Caprese tomato mozzarella salad. The staff also convinced us to try the pork meatballs and they were divine. So mouthwatering cooked in marsala cream and pecorino - soft and decadent. Highly recommend. Everything here is petite and share-able and so well-presented. The food is super fresh and the music was bangin and the staff are friendly. I adored my Garibaldi cocktail - a simple combo of Campari and fluffy orange juice. A great addition to the atx fam! I was curious about an italian place that didn't have pasta but they have many other options to scratch that carby itch. Intimate, comfy hometown feel with 5 or 6 tables inside, covered outdoor seating and uncovered outdoor seating. Grab a menu and order at the register, open tab options. While in line to order, peruse the gelato and pastry options. Start light with an antipasti such as the elegannt carpaccio topped with arugula, a generous shavings of parmesan and olive oil. Don't skip the meatballs, they are tender and covered in a mouth watering parmesan cream sauce. Both left me wanting to try more, such as the sardines, the cleverly named ham &eggs or maybe the mortadella stuffed peppers. Most are priced between $7-9 each. The italian style toasts are done well, not overly toasted or too thick or chewy - just right. The classico was simple but satisfying with 3 slices of toast topped with ricotta, prosciutto and drizzled with chili honey. The prices make these toasts much more at appetizing at about $5-$6 each. I found the kale salad to be a bit small and common for the price, the kale almost too big to take comfortable bites. Next time, i will try the impressive and large looking chopped salad. The pressed piadini sandwiches and cold sanwiches on focaccia look great and the prices are good - on my list to try next time. Not on the menu but up on the board, we tried the $4 taylor ham, egg and cheese sandwich which is exactly what you want it to be and more for that price tag. Something for every mood with alcoholic beverages and classic espresso drinks. End (or start) your meal with a sweet! I sampled a birthday cake gelato, as well as the strawberry milk flavor - delish! Dang, those $3-4 pastries, tho! That churro flavored krueller is just perfect - moist, eggy and slightly reminiscent of french caneles. The bombolini is so decadent and what every donut wants to grow up to be...they dont skimp on the filling, i tried the vanilla pastry cream vs the chocolate option and it was a pudding lovers dream. I also noticed some tasty looking cannolis, a jammy looking strawberry coffee cake and tempting fruit kolaches. This is a new establishment in Hyde Park. It works on the counter service model where you order your meal or drink and it will be brought out to you. While you were in line waiting for ordering, you can browse the gelato choices. I ordered the tuna sandwich and it did not take long to arrive. It was a very sizable sandwich it was quite an Endeavour to take down. If you're not terribly hungry, it is likely enough for two people. I also had the sardines. The presentation was very nice with Ritz crackers in the wrapper as well as sardines in the can. Very Tastefully done. Sardines hit the spot. It was nice to go to sit outside and enjoy the day and have a nice lunch. Unfortunately, somebody photobombed my picture of the tuna, but I guess this will happen. Boom. I started with the Garibaldi to wet my whistle. The cold Campari and the fluffy orange juice in a chilled glass are quite divine. For sustenance, I ordered the salami & stracchino flat bread sandwich along with the chopped salad. The stracchino was so melty and creamy as it engulfed the salami between the perfectly toasted flat bread. The chopped salad was everything you expect from an italian chopped salad. Just like your Aunt would bring to the family gatherings! To wash it all down, I ordered the Americano. Carpano Antica Formula, Campari, and seltzer with an orange peel. Quite refreshing! Come out in the early morning for a tasty pastry and coffee or bring a friend for a delicious lunch or dinner with drinks. If you want some gelato they have that two. The place is a great local hangout with youthful music, great sandwiches, and pleasant staff. The porchetta and tuna salad sandwiches are my favorite. I like that they have a wide variety of non alcoholic beverages for when I'm not feeling like booze or when it's too early in the day for a drink. When I do want something more mature, they make a great espresso martini. I've asked for a mint julep a couple of times and didn't love what I got. But, for the most part the space is great for a good bite and casual hangs. read more

My wife and I came in for a visit on the second day of their soft opening. We found a small space, comfortably appointed and a patio where the majority of the seating resides. When we stopped in Friday night, the place was poppin! The line was to the door, but the staff were handling the rush like champs. We were very impressed with everyone's demeanor considering the high stress they were under. We started off with 2 Peroni (the only beer on tap), a white negroni and a traditional negroni. The beer was delicious and the cocktails were fantastic. We have recently been on a negroni kick and these were just as good as the ones we make at home, impressive considering the speed with which they were turning them out. Between several rounds of the before-mentioned drinks, we sampled the following: stuffed peppers (I was a big fan, my wife found them to be a bit too bitter for her liking), a flatbread sandwich with prosciutto cotto and fontina (delicious, priced right, and filled with high quality ingredients) and several of the pane tostato (listed from favorite to least favorite, though we enjoyed all of them): What's 'Nduja, Classico, PB&J, Baccala Mantecato, and Grazie a Cicero. We truly loved every dish we got and it was the perfect setup for casual conversation, drinks and a rotating door of snacks. If you are expecting a fine-dining experience, you don't understand what these guys are doing. Set your expectations and prepare to be impressed. Everything about this place reminded us of our absolute favorite Osterias in Rome. Despite the challenges posed by a soft-opening, we walked away with no substantive complaints and can not wait to make another visit. read more

After recently moving to the Hyde Park area, we have been lucky enough to go a handful of times and have enjoyed it every time. There is some parking spots in the front, but also a bigger lot in the back! You order at the counter where they have a large selection of alcoholic cocktails, beer and wine, and then find yourself a seat in the restaurant or on their patio (which is covered in the winter & dog friendly!!!) They have great shareable dishes, and if there's one thing you NEED to try...it's the Classico Pane Tostada. I could eat it for breakfast, lunch and dinner (lol). The waitstaff is always on it, making delicious drinking, whipping up delicious food and bringing it out in a timely manner. The music is always good, people always have a smile on their face and the fact that you can bring dogs on the patio is the cherry on the pie! They were both SO tasty! The entrees were light and jam-packed with flavor. Such great ambiance as well. Lots of outdoor seating and alternative lighting. The only reasons I gave it four stars instead five is because 1. I felt the portions were a bit small considering the price (I was also super hungry coming in) and 2. the sandwich came with a side of lays potato chips; I felt this did a bit of injustice to the quality of the sandwich. We're late with this review. We were here again last Monday evening with two of our friends, fellow HPers, for happy hour. Was happy hour always only until 5:00 pm? That's a bit lame-o. Also gone are those $1 Peronis we remember so fondly... We didn't have as wonderful of an experience at Uncle Nicky's this time around, but still very much appreciate this spot for what it is. First of all, staff was neither as friendly nor as helpful. The woman at the register had a chip on her shoulder and there was confusion as to the running/clearing of plates. It was also unclear who was supposed to be manning our table, as for example, when we wanted to put in an additional order. So, yeah, that's gone down with Covid. Food was OK. Piadina was good and we liked the meatballs a bit better this time around. The stuffed peppers take their description literally and could have benefited from some more excitement on the plate. The pork bolognese was definitely our favorite and you could tell by the oil situation that it was well made. Pistachio gelato did not impress. So, overall, a decent meal but we weren't in love. We'll be back, of course, since it's so convenient to home, and will hopefully have more of a four star experience again next time. read more
