Love this coffee shop in plaza! Reminds me of those you'll find in Portland or west coast. It's very modern, open and light. Love the wooden tables and open seating areas. They do oat milk , which is my favorite. I tried the gritz bowl (their signature) and it was delicious! Not overly heavy and buttery where you feel sick after. The crimini mushrooms are a must add, and add the egg! They also source food locally which is important to me. If I lived closer I'd come here to work often. The baristas are friendly and the larger bathroom has furniture that can be used as a chasing table too, which makes bringing a baby easier. Great spot and delicious coffee! read more

Super cool new coffee shop in Plaza Midwood! I walked in a little before 9am on a Saturday and the place was already packed. Barely any wait for coffee, so the staff moves pretty quick. I ended up with the Pure Intentions Cold Brew on tap. So good! They have half and half and almond milk on the side, and whole milk behind the bar. I guess Almond Milk is all the rage now, but I'm not into it. The first time I went, I got a good cold brew. The second time, I got a latte. I do love that they have some simple syrup on the side bar rather than a bunch of different sugar options. I also ordered the Avocado Toast with an egg on top, and it literally looked like a work of art. Sliced avocado, too, not guacamole! The ambiance is very welcoming. There are a number of modern chairs/couches and some community tables where you can work or meet someone for coffee. The place is much bigger than it looks, so don't be scared to go to the back! Overall, I'm really happy with the new addition to the Plaza Midwood area. The place is inviting and you will not hesitate to just sit for a few minutes and enjoy your coffee with some latte art on the top. If your'e looking to just run in, grab a quick cup and bolt out without making conversation with the staff, I would say this place isn't for you. read more

Oh my gosh, I used to live in PM and walk past Undercurrent Coffee like, everyday, and I always was like "BUT WILL THEY EVER OPEN." I heard it was a bit of a struggle with permits, etc and I felt so bad! Great little addition to what fills a definite void in the Plaza. Great space, great light, comfy seating, good service. They don't offer unsweetened matcha which was disappointing. Ended up with an iced coffee and almond milk. J had an iced vanilla latte. The glassware was nice for dining in, but kind of small. Price was in line of other shops in town. Not Just, Hex, Trade & Lore, etc. about $12 all-in for two drinks. read more

Great addition to the Plaza Midwood neighborhood! Went on the first Saturday it opened, and as expected, it was packed. This place got a lot of hype, and I have to admit that it did live up to the expectations. After we got through the line, I ordered a matcha latte with almond milk (they also have oat milk!), the avocado toast with a poached egg, and a triangle shaped oat-like dessert pastry (I don't remember the name of it, but it was sooo delicious!). The matcha latte was as expected, and the avo toast was really good! It is served on a nice thick slice of bread, with fresh avocado, and spices. The egg was absolutely cooked to perfection! I personally hate when I order a poached egg with a yolk nearly all the way cooked, and this was definitely not that. wanted: basic b*!ch seeking extremely 'gram worthy coffee shop with on point lighting, soothing aesthetic, colorful food and pretty drinks. undercurrent coffee: check, check, check and check! coffee: lots of options for coffee and non-coffee drinkers. i'm not huge on coffee but still found great options, ESPECIALLY that iced chai. food: i think what i enjoy about the menu is that they have an awesome balance of savory and sweet foods for breakfast/brunch. the avocado toast is actually quite filling and they don't skimp on the avocado. had it twice and probably will 3, 4, you get it. in terms of sweet i've tried the blueberry chia pudding and the golden milk yogurt. again filling, pretty to look at and yummy without being sickeningly sweet. all the mistakes you made in your diet that week are forgiven when you've had these, i promise! also sampled their banana bread which was freshly baked and perfect for two to split. environment: this is somewhere where you can't blame someone for taking a picture of their food (you're doing it too)! the decor is so perfect for a coffee shop. muted and blues that has an overall calming effect along with a very friendly staff. you notice all these little details that lets you know the owners really care about the space. it is slightly smaller but waiting for a table to open up hasn't taken me more than a few minutes. plus it's in the heart of plaza so you're in a great location to do a little day exploring of the area. read more

Sadly underwhelmed with undercurrent. I was really looking forward to trying this place. My latte was good. I ordered avo toast and waited 25 minutes for it. One tiny slice of bread... so I asked for an egg and paid additional $2 to bulk it up with some protein.... took another 15 min. In total, I paid over $16 (not including $2.50 tip) and waited 40 min for a sad slice of toast and a decent latte. Maybe I'm getting old and grouchy but this place feels overpriced. read more

2nd time stopping by and have to say it's pretty good. I've tried the two iced lattes: vanilla and mocha. The espresso is smooth not acidic which is good. Not sure how strong the espresso is. The overall experience inside is real nice, plenty of seating for roughy 40 people. Parking might be an issue, with only a few parking spots but this is plaza midwood. Lattes might be a little expensive for the size. Maybe have 16oz or 20oz. Overall I'll keep coming back. read more

I just tried their Dirty Chai Tea Latte and it was terrible. Tasted burnt. Not to mention a small cup cost me $6.00. Unbelievable.

I ordered a large coffee, they gave me a cup with a carafe on the side as they don't have large cups. Ok... I go to the condiment table, no cream or any substitute. Not did they ask if I wanted cream when I ordered. So I go back to ask for cream and it's a whole process to get me cream. I thought about letting them in on the recent trend (last 100 years or so) that cream is a popular option in coffee. Very odd! read more

*written from my bf who doesn't have an account* My first mistake was even ordering their $6.75 plough boy grit bowls. Took about 15 mins to get, even though the shop wasn't remarkably busy. I got about 6oz of cold grits in each bowl. Ice cold. When I brought it up to the staff they said it was cause they put cold goat cheese on top. I told them "no, they're cold all the way through." Dude just stared at me and said sorry, offered no resolution. I get home to eat them and they didn't even put goat cheese on either bowl. This place is horrifically overpriced, and I know it's my fault for giving them my business, but to sell a $6.75 GRITS bowl, and then ON TOP of that to serve it cold with toppings missing, I just can't even wrap my mind around it. A warm welcome to coffee lovers alike but I have to say there were a few lack luster very important qualities that make a coffee house, well, a coffee house (literally). This shop is out of a house, its quaint, its bright, its modern with nooks in several places inside for one to work, read or socialize. It also has a nice front sitting area to enjoy alfresco. Everyone I encountered was "friendly enough". I ordered the pour over which I love in general because you truly get to enjoy and savor your coffee. I found the brew to be very weak and when I used the alternative oak milk provided aside from cream which I can't do, I found that it was even more distant to the taste of coffee. My friend ordered the cold brew and asked for a shot of espresso. I took a sip just to see, and I probably would go back and try an espresso style drink next time, with an extra shot. I wish they had also provided almond milk aside from cream and oat milk, but perhaps it wasn't set up that day (?). I was pressed to try the avocado toast since its extremely highlighted when I had read up on them. Initially I was impressed because it looked beautiful, the micro amaranth is so pretty and such a great color contrast to the avocado. I asked for the egg to be on top which was cooked perfectly. The toast itself was very tasty, as were the spiced seeds, however, there was this faint taste of I am thinking cumin??? My initial bite, I was intrigued but after my third I didn't have a desire to finish it, it just had this strange taste. I left hungry but not hungry enough to try something else. We were hungry after a doctors appointment and there is not many breakfast options around Charlotte that are very clean. So, after I found this place on Yelp it was kind of stupid not to try it. I will warn you that the place is small and easy to miss. There is not much parking spaces, either. But we went not expecting much of it, and boy were we wrong. Very trendy and modern inside, we sat down and ordered the Avocado Toast and a Chocolate Orange Latte. After a very short amount of time we ate. There was nothing to complain about. That seems pretty extreme to me for plain black coffee. Coffee tasted bitter.
