Delicious sushi and Staff are so friendly and welcoming. Food is always good and service is always great

Uni Sushi & Steak is located in the City if Surprise. It's a stand alone restaurant in a shopping complex near Walmart and Home Depot. There is a lot of free parking directly in front of the restaurant. There is no outdoor seating, but the space inside is very large. Booths line all of the walls and tables fill the center section of the floor. The back wall has a sushi counter where a sushi chef puts together orders when placed. In one corner of the restaurant is a full service bar. They have specialty cocktails available and they are a few dollars less during happy hour from 3:00 pm to closing. We tried the Blossomtini and the Lychee Martini. Both were quite sweet. The Blossomtini was made with Grand Marnier, triple sec, sake, cranberry juice and lime juice. My mom loved it. The Lychee Martini had vodka, like juice, lychee liquor, and vermouth. My uncle said it was much too sweet for him. I had sweet iced tea. The waitress was great about bringing me a refill before I ran out, and she even offered to make me one to take on the road. Our waitress was very patient with us. It took us some time to make up our mind when deciding what to order. She checked in with us regularly, but gave us plenty of space so that we didn't feel pressured. My uncle and mom wanted spicy sauce, so she brought a small dish of Siracha sauce. Also, our sushi rolls came with golf ball sized wasabi on each plate. She took good care of us. The menu has a variety of sushi choices, but you can also find things for those who don't like fish like ramen and chicken teriyaki. For our appetizers, we had an order of fried calamari and miso soup. My mom isn't into sushi, so she ordered the shrimp and mixed vegetable tempura. It was so light and delicious! She also tried the firecracker with tuna stuffed into half a jalapeño. Unfortunately, it was not spicy at all, but it was flavorful. My uncle and I ordered unagi rolls, spicy tuna rolls, and salmon sushi. It was a lot of food. We were absolutely stuffed. The price tag was about $110...reasonable for three people who were pleasantly full and enjoyed our dining experience. read more

Stopped in for lunch at Uni Sushi and Steakhouse and tried their "Pick 2" lunch specials--one sushi roll and one entrée for $18. They also offer $21 lunch specials with upgraded sushi options. Seating was quick and spacious--the dining area is open with plenty of room. While the food came out fast, the service from our waitress was surprisingly slow, especially considering there were only a few other tables at the time. We ordered the spicy tuna roll with beef bulgogi, and the California roll with NY strip steak. Each combo came with miso soup, green salad, white rice, and three pieces of tempura. The sushi was disappointing. Both rolls were loosely wrapped and fell apart easily. The spicy tuna had no real spice or flavor. The California roll was served at room temperature and also didn't hold together well. On the upside, the beef bulgogi was tender, flavorful, and melted in your mouth. The NY strip was cooked perfectly--juicy and tender. The tempura was crisp and light, and the miso soup was warm and comforting. The salad, however, was drenched in dressing--there was easily a quarter cup sitting at the bottom of the bowl. Overall, the entrée portions were the highlight, but the sushi missed the mark. For $18-$21 per meal, I expected more consistency and quality. Nothing really stood out enough to make me want to return. read more

Our normal Japanese restaurant was closed on Sunday, so we decided to try this place. Tempura batter is way too thick, doughy, and it's not crispy. Tempura bell pepper isn't normally supposed to be served either. We left the plate half full as the tempura batter was not desirable to anyone in our party. The sashimi was fresh and the cuts a decent size. I asked for ponzu sauce and they had a choice of regular ponzu and garlic ponzu sauce. The garlic ponzu sauce was quite good, a bit strong, so use sparingly. Would I come back? Probably not. read more

Greeted and seated right away as always. Large open space but seats are old and torn. Waitress was so sweet, helpful & patient. We ordered egg rolls, saki bombers & beer to start. Egg rolls were crispy but more bready than usual. Still flavor was great. Saki bombers were so good. Bf had salmon sashimi he loved it. My son had the yakisoba with chicken and he ate every single bit. We ordered three sushi rolls from the happy hour menu. We loved the flavors in every single one. The Golden California was our favorite. It just had the best mixture of textures and flavor. A little sweet. The Buffalo roll was so delicious and a little spicy, but fell apart probably because it's a baked roll. Then the red snapper roll, which was good. My only complaint would be the bathroom. It was clean enough, but you could tell so many repairs were made over another. The toilet moved when you sat on it. This visit I decided to try the lunch steak and salmon teriyaki. Salmon was delicious! I feel the portion was slightly smaller than the last time I had the lunch salmon but I also had the steak so I wasn't too upset. But the steak was a little too well done for my taste, also really thin. I wouldn't pay for steak in the future and will just stick to the teriyaki salmon. I gave a 4 a while ago... We dined in this time. The Sushi is still good. The pork Bulgogi has been really off the last few times I've been & I've said nothing but this time I have to say it smelled foul & tasted way off. The veggies lacked flavor. ( Something is definitely wrong with the seasoning? Refrigeration? Just this dish? This is still a nice small hidden spot for locals that like to get in & get out. Service is quick. The music was nice & upeat. I don't see them plating the sushi as well as they use to. (minimal flare). The miso soup was fine. Always kind and efficient service. Went on a Sunday night and it wasn't too crowded. The guy host that sat us was very very awkward. Just threw the menus down, didn't say anything and got away from us as fast as he could. Started with miso soup. It was good. Got the ramen which was a serious "meh". Tasted just like the grocery store ramen. The tempura fried golden California roll was awesome. I was so looking forward to trying this restaurant....and well, I wish I kept the idea of "this looks like a great restaurant" because it wasn't. The best part was our waitress. We order a tuna poke appetizer which was actually good (hence the two stars) so we were excited for our main entree. The lunch entrees all came with white rice, salad, and soup. The soup was actually decent but the salad was a little lack luster. On to the main dish...my husband had the Katsu (chicken) and I had bulgogi. My husband meal was pretty decent...chicken wasn't too dry. On the other hand, my bulgogi was so dry that our waitress even brought me two different sauces so maybe I could choke it down. Got a good reference for sushi nearby and decided to try it. Surprisingly was very good but with some issues. Restaurant was clean and service was spot on, love this part about it. Also the hours were open during the day so better than some other sushi spots. Fish: mixed review here, yellowtail sushi great, salmon sushi was not the best. Tasted fishy and that ruins it fast, maybe sat a little too long. Good salmon sushi is like melting butter in your mouth, this was not it. Rolls were solid with Philly outstanding. California roll was good also. Just the salmon wasn't on par. Cooked food: ok here I was surprised to find the bulgogi spicy pork simply delicious. I'd come back just to have that meal again. Overall I gave 4 stars because something as common as salmon sushi should always be the freshest, or we will know and not come back. The only negative is, although rolls were ordered by each one of us, they were presented on the same serving dish. I guess this would cut down on table clutter, but it forces two people that may not have that bond to share Wasabi and ginger. Overall, the food and the service was good. If i could leave zero stars i would. I have never made reviews so for me to be making tbis that says something. i came to eat here tonight with my family. I have been going here for at least 4 years and tonight was horrible. We ordered extra ginger with our sushi and did not get it. We asked out server if we could get our extra ginger when she brought the food out she said yes then went and talked to 3 other tables. We called her back over and had to ask for it again. We then told her that we would have liked it to come back with our food and she should have checked it it make sure it was there before bringing to us. After that she did not come back to our table and we were helped by 3 separate people after that. When our final server took the check for us to pay she came back and told us that the server was in the back crying and they would be refusing service to us from now on. Asking for our food to come out properly is not a reason to refuse service. Horrible service ever since the manager was replaced. DO NOT EAT HERE! read more

First time at Uni Sushi and Steak. I arrived at 2:30 on a Monday afternoon and it was nearly empty. Obviously I was greeted quickly by my server, who offered me something to drink right away. I ordered the Sushi lunch special A: it came with my choice of salad, soup, entree and sushi roll. I got the ginger-dressing salad, miso soup, beef bulgolgi and a spicy crab roll. The salad was crisp and fresh with mixed greens, purple cabbage, carrots and cucumbers for color and crunch. The miso soup was hot and rich with a strong miso flavor. It had a few bits of tofu and scallions. It was good but I wasn't there for the salad or soup. The Beef Bulgolgi was good but was lacking the tenderness that bulgolgi demands. It was sliced thinly but needed the marination in pear to achieve the tender bite. The meat was also sliced a little sloppily, leaving a few pieces connected to each other. There are no knives on oriental tables, so that was a challenge. The Spicy Crab Roll was 8 pieces and had plenty of spice. No complaints there. The dish also arrived with 4 pieces of tempura, which was a nice touch. I saw six televisions throughout the restaurant. There was also moody, hip music playing. I will return to Uni when I get up this way again. read more

My husband and I decided to try this sushi place today, we just moved to this side of town and it's located very close to our house. The service was not great, the servers were all sitting at a table by the bar chatting as our drinks were empty at our table. We ordered the edamame, cucumber salad and egg rolls to start. The edamame was ok. The cucumber salad was too sweet and the egg rolls were mushy/soggy inside. My husband ordered the spicy crab roll and the California roll. He said they were ok but honestly the Cali rolls from fry's tasted better. I ordered the OMG roll, two pieces of salmon sushi and two pieces of yellowtail sushi. The salmon had a good texture and taste but all of the raw fish I ordered was room temperature. The yellowtail sushi was not flavorful at all and also room temp. The OMG roll tasted very strange the flavor profile did not go together at all and again was room temperature. I ate 3 pieces all together and decided to not finish my food for two reasons. One, the fish was room temperature and that made me feel uncomfortable eating raw fish at unsafe temperatures. Two, the flavor of the food was not good. We came once about five years ago and had never been back until recently. We've been two to three times in the last two weeks. This is the best sushi Surprise has to offer. Some of the rolls are a bit over priced, but others are a great deal. The sushi guys are always so friendly and fast, but service could use some work. Location is clean and a lot of tables/booths. A lot of the booths are in disarray and have tape on them. Not the most comfortable. Sushi is good, especially compared to the other awful sushi spots near by. The best sushi in Surprised. We try them all when they open and we keep coming back to Uni. The Honda roll with a lime slice on top mmmmmm. The Palm Springs roll with cilantro (so good!). Other places drizzle so much sauce you can taste if their fish is fresh or not. Not Uni! What ever light sauce they use is always to compliment, not disguise. Me and my very hungry family got here for lunch around 11:15am, right when they just opened. The server greeted us and had us seated right away. We come from the land of AYCE sushi and are used to ordering at least 8 rolls. This time, we had ordered 6 rolls at a time and one lunch special. Mind you, yes, this is NOT an AYCE. We knew of that, we were aware. However, the server asked us THREE TIMES, "That's a lot of food, are you sure you'll be able to finish it?" Not even 5 minutes later, a different server came at our table a d commented how much food we ordered. This time we have felt violated and left the business. We offered to pay for the Sodas we had asked for. Both the sushi chef laughed and giggled at us while we walked away with all our food almost ready. I cannot understand the customer service in the food industry, especially in this type of business. We were HUNGRY, PAYING customers and this business humiliated us for ordering too much food. My husband and I frequent this place quite often because the happy hour is a really good deal! It also goes on longer than a lot of other restaurants. We almost always get the fried rice and spring rolls & are definitely favorites. The fried rice is really good! Sushi's really good for the price & it always tastes good. I love getting the rice paper instead of seaweed & the fried cali roll & shrimp tempura roll are my go to's Also my husbands much pickier with sushi & he hasn't had anything he didn't like. The only downside is while it doesn't feel dirty it doesn't always feel as clean as it should in this day & age. But nothing that stops us from going back. Just a note read more
