Black folks don't seem to be welcomed by Union 50. Noticeably, the reservation list on Open Table isn't honored because they are able to double book tables. Autumn and Haley were unprofessional and didn't care about people on the waitlist. I would have gladly left IF Autumn or Haley would have shared that 9+ reservations were ahead of us. Instead they chose to condescend me and tell me "their bad was only telling me it would be a half an hour wait". That was the worst part. That was their only condolence, a patronizing statement. Not an apology. Why they told me a half an hour wait was the expectation while knowing there were 9+ reservations ahead of my party, is inconceivable. Mind you during this time, I saw them seat over 4 tables of all white people and stuck me in the vestibule without even a hello each time they closed the door to keep the heat in and leave us in the cold. A low grade establishment. Any restaurant worth their salt would have checked in with us. I've lived here all my life and I've never felt this way before. This is not New York City. I feel bad giving this restaurant a 4 out of 5 because I was with a group and I think everyone loved their food except me. I am a picky eater and so it's hard to find food on a foodie/upscale menu like this one. I didn't understand that the wood-fired San Marzano tomatoes and goat cheese was really just a marinara dip with bread. Someone in my party ordered that as an appetizer and the bread was crusty yet soft inside. I had the roasted half chicken which was really two large chicken breasts with skin. It doesn't say on the menu but it is topped with a lemon sauce and capers and that is what I didn't care for. Because the chicken was plated on top of the mashed potatoes, I couldn't really eat those because of the sauce. What I did eat of the chicken was cooked well and juicy. Though I didn't enjoy the food, I loved the atmosphere. I'd love to come back some time to sit outside or hear live music inside. I can always have the fries and drinks! read more

Daniel did some research and Union 50 had great reviews and an interesting menu so he made reservations for us and I am so glad he did! The atmosphere is laid back but beautiful. It's elegant yet slightly modern. I loved the bar area and the ceilings. Our server, Mike, was fantastic. He was friendly, fun and had excellent taste. I started with a refreshing cocktail (Daisy Fay) made with cucumber infused vodka and Daniel ordered the Bitter Bee which was a tart tequila based drink. Both were well made and delicious. We were having a tough time deciding on food as the menu is diverse and unique. We wanted to try it all. At the recommendation of our server, we ordered the toast and jam. Oh my gosh- it is incredible!! Wild Gulf Shrimp Toast with Sushi Grade Ahi Jam- what an amazing combination. Next we opted for the shrimp-n-grits and Duck, duck. Both were great with unique flavor profiles. We would order it all again, but the toast was by far our favorite. The service was top notch and the food was delicious. Service was GREAT especially for how busy they were. Our drinks and first courses (salads) came out and all were delicious! The Caesar salad is good.. I just wish the lettuce was in bite sized pieces. They were huge! The anchovy on top was honestly a nice touch. The problem came when I got my meal.. shrimp+grits. When I got it I tried diving in and my shrimp was cold. I thought maybe it was bc they were on top and the AC was blowing so I dove underneath to the grits and they were barely warm. Bummer. Things tasted good (especially the pinkish sauce on everything!) but everything was cold. So I let my server know and they just put the shrimp under a warmer and replaced the grits and greens on top. The shrimp ended up way over cooked and the pink sauce didn't make a reappearance on my plate when it came back. To be honest, it tasted like a completely different meal. Instead of being difficult I just ate my grits and half of the shrimp. Honestly, it was a pretty lackluster meal. The food here is amazing! My husband, son, and I had dinner here tonight for our anniversary and the food was great and the service even better. We made a reservation and our server, Sam, put a big bottle on the table with a beautiful flower in it to set the table for us. We had the lamb (which was phenomenal by the way), a charcuterie board (highly recommend), beef tartare, bone marrow, swordfish, king salmon, and chocolate terrine. Sam gave us a champagne toast to celebrate and we had some cocktails as well (all amazing). I would highly recommend eating here or celebrating an intimate occasion here. Some colleagues and I came across this restaurant while we were in the area for work. All meals smelled great and was plated beautifully! While I had the shrimp & grits, others ordered the king salmon, gnocchi with chicken, and the pork chop. There were no complaints; only silence once the food came out. I moved to Indy from Italy 3 years ago, and my husband brought me here for a date the very first day. Being the first restaurant I tried in Indy, this place truly has sentimental value to me. After three years, the menu hasn't changed much, and it is a shame because any time my friends and I want to have dinner outside and someone vents the idea of going here, most people say "not the Union 50 because the menu's always the same". And they are right, because even if it's cool to listen to live music and the location is certainly fabulous, I maybe fancy to try something different. In addition to that, the quality of food dropped dramatically. I had dinner there in November '18 and ordered the Salmon: it was like a $30 1x1 inch cube, excessively spicy and with balsamic vinaigrette. Yesterday I came back for another work dinner: the menu was identical in every single item. I had the toast & Jam as an appetizer: it didn't look good and it wasn't good, I didn't even know where the shrimp were honestly. They didn't charge it on the bill. Then I got the tuna nori: it had fresh egg pasta on the bottom and seared tuna on top. Very spicy, overall ok, but nothing I would want to eat again. The only item in the menu that remains absolutely fantastic are the fries (you can choose the type of fries I.e. rosemary and duck fat/bacon & cheese and the homemade sauces). I am a big desserts' fan, but - again - there was nothing new I could have tried. This is one of the most expensive restaurants in Indy (appetizers $15-20/entrees $30-40), but it is no longer worth what you pay. Union 50 is a great place to grab drinks, I tried "wine on tap" and i think it may be the best wine I have ever had. The cheese board was outrageous for being so little food, but still good. We let the chef pick our meat and cheese that paired best with our wine, and the smoked salmon was not something I would have picked and none of us ate it. We also tried the carrot cake which was definitely house made and delicious. Service was definitely slow and sub-par, don't go here if you are on a strict time schedule, but my only complaint was the music was so loud that we couldn't even talk. There was a group of 6 of us and you had to scream to talk to the person next to you and you couldn't even hear the person across from you. We were there for a girls night and we couldn't even talk. I've been to Union 50 a couple of times now and it's pretty consistent. The food is decent enough, my personal fave are their sticky wings. One of my fave things about them is that they have drinks to a theme usually pop culture faves like Game of Thrones and Star Wars. I do like the drinks here as well. It definitely feels nice to know that this spot is only a 2 minute walk from Mass Ave and close to our new home. First of all, I love the retro vibe inside. I'm interested to come here on a night with live music so we can get the full experience. We sat outside on a beautiful summer evening and the TeQuiling Me Softly cocktail really hit the spot. It comes with crystallized ginger on top, and that is an automatic win for Sar. It's like finding the golden ticket in a Wonka bar. If there's crystallized ginger on top of my cocktail, I am automatically going to get two, even if the first one made me feel tipsy enough - which it did. It ended up being that I couldn't finish my second, but I'm still glad I had 1.5 of these puppies. I have to admit I was a LITTLE confused upon looking at the food menu. I do think the format of the menu could be improved. I'm not the biggest fan of places that list the menu item next to every ingredient involved in the dish divided up by slashes. Like, if pizza was on this menu, it would have said: pizza vg, cheese / sauce / wheat dough / evoo / peppercorn / basil / cracked sea salt / wtf / enough / pizza / is / pizza. That's how I felt reading every menu item. And the apps section with the different charcuterie boards and all the different options of what you can add/subtract confused me too. Future Husband volunteered the delightful notion that he understands the menu here perfectly well, but alas, this is not Future Husband's Yelp review. Anyway, whatever hold ups I had about the menu were put to rest as soon as I tasted my delicious cocktail, the goat cheese dip, and the fries. And then my dinner was delivered -- a vegan take on the glazed mushrooms dish with alt. tofu -- and oh me oh my! Firstly, every restaurant at this point should have the option of subbing in tofu for any dish on the menu. If you don't have that option, the menu might as well say Chef / is / lazy. Tofu is so easy to work with and can be treated as any meat. I will hands down be back for this dish, but am well aware that the orange sauce used to decorate it probably has egg or cream in it. I, of course, love a place that specifies vegetarian vs. vegan, but it's still 2021, and everyone knows we have a long way to go when it comes to saving the planet. The flavor was amazing and it was seasoned perfectly!! For dinner by husband did the Chilaquiles Poutine with an added egg. Our waiter recommended it. The dish had a lot going on in one small bowl. The main flavor came from the pulled pork. The juice from the meat quickly made the french fries mush (more so than normal poutine). I did the Wood Fired Wild Mushrooms for my dinner. The dish case out presented so well! The mushrooms are topped with a fried bacon/potato layered thing (best way to describe it). The first bite of the bacon was cold and tasted very rubbery which prompted me to separate the bacon/potato thing only to find frozen, raw bacon. I quickly got our waiters attention who was just as shocked as we were. He talked with the kitchen and a new dish was made and brought out to me. At this point my stomach was upset knowing I had consumed raw bacon and I was a little grossed out to say the least. I didn't really touch my dish and the waiter noticed when collecting our plates. After he made a comment about having quite a bit left I advised him I had lost my appetite after the raw bacon. Updated review: my boyfriend and I went tonight for my birthday and had an amazing time. We got charcuterie and cheese, 2 petite dishes, 2 bistro dishes, and 1 main. The selection of charcuterie is amazing. The beef tartare and tuna were amazing. The skate wing is still my favorite and my boyfriend had the toast and jam which I highly recommend!! We also got the shrimp and grits which we had to take home because we were so full. Amazing experience. Definitely worth the visit. Previous visit: Very decent restaurant in Indy! A little overpriced in my opinion, but they have skate wing on the menu which is my favorite fish! Also very attentive with low drinks I'm pretty generic so I had a cosmopolitan and husband had Crown Royal XO on the rocks. In all honesty, I've been getting a bit weary of all the 'trendy" spots sprouting up around Indy. By now I assume horrid parking situations, high prices, small portions, overcrowded extremely loud venues with snooty service. Luckily I was only partially right. Being a bit away from the main Mass Ave drag, parking was a little easier, not great, but not horrible either. There is a small private lot available too, but I didn't fine out about it until after the fact. I did see the valet parking signs though. Pricewise, there are many options and you can go from the frugal to the expensive, but I appreciate having that choice. Portion wise not too bad on average from what I've seen, there is more of some dishes than of others. However, the cheese & meat boards (starting at $12) are a real mixed bag. The boards these are served on are simply huge, making for great impact when the wait staff has to drag those to the table and make room for the thing. But the board is soooo huge, that the cheeses/meats look simply tiny on it. Actually the portions are not that small, but look like nothing more than a little dot. Kind of like an airplane in the sky... we all know they are good size, but look like little dots while they are up there. On to the adult beverages... One of my friends had a glass of wine... huge glass... again, made the serving of wine look like a drop in a bucket. I experienced the 'Scarlet Witch' cocktail, recommended by our server and a very good choice I must say. At $10 it seemed small, but it surely packed a punch. Well worth it. Very interesting hard to describe taste, neither sweet nor sour/dry, just right. Went down smooth and then spread warmth from the inside out. Had I not been driving, I would have had a few refills on that. I was talked into trying one of the Poutines. My first time and I chose the Chilaquiles for $12 and it turned out to be a good decision. The pulled pork atop of French Fries with various other 'things' floating around in the big bowl-like plate was just delicious. And quite a portion, which is a delight for a girl like me who can put away food. I ate about half of it and took the rest home... Was saving room for dessert. Let me tell you about dessert. I can't remember the exact name, but it was described as a version of Bananas Foster... I can not rave enough about this dish. Visual presentation simply awesome. Size wise intimidating. This is going to sound strange, but is so so tasty. Several pieces of little French toast pieces, having ever so slightly crunchy outsides and the fluffiest soft insides were topped with an amazing whip cream. I bet there was some kind of flavoring in there too. But these 'bread' pieces were alternated with scoops of ice cream, or was it Gelato? It was so light and creamy, instantly melting in your mouth, tasting of vanilla with a slight hint of banana, not much, but just enough. The entire platter was drizzled what tasted like a buttery maple rum mix, that seemed to enhance each delectable bite of this incredible dessert. Wish I knew the name of it. anyways, the venue itself is really nicely done. There is a lot to look at, tons of details went into this remodel. The atmosphere is great, but it is loud. So conversations are cumbersome and you basically have to out-scream everybody else, making it even louder. Service was a bag of mixed goods. While the support wait staff was on the dot with water refills and food being brought out as soon as it was plated, our actual waiter didn't seem to have much interest in our table. Which is the reason I didn't give 5 stars. He was there to get our drink orders, but after that he was gone forever. I swear we waited 1/2 hour easily to put in our food order. Final thought: this place is well worth it. Too bad we couldn't stay longer, I might have enjoyed watching the band perform also. read more

Union 50 is a great place to share a dining adventure with friends. Great service accompanies the creative assemblage of flavors that will surprise those dining. Our group of four arrived early Sunday evening after parking in the free lot on Walnut Street. We chose to be seated inside the spacious, high ceiling-ed dining hall, across from the bar. Our server and a number of supporting staff made sure we had plenty of water, fresh plates and silverware for each course, and were personable, without being intrusive. We started off with some of the smaller plates and an order of Artisan Bread (not complimentary, but very affordably priced). The Sticky Chicken Wings had a delightful toasted sesame soy glaze. Very tasty! The plate was complimented by cucumber, fresno chili peppers, scallions, and a surprisingly delicious seaweed salad. Who knew seaweed could be so yummy? Oh, we also were brought warm moist towelettes with a slice of lemon to wash our hands after eating the wings with our fingers. We also shared a plate of Medjool Dates. The dates were stuffed with Tequila spiked chorizo, and wrapped in bacon, over Peruvian pepper sauce. I really liked the combination of flavors of sweet, salty, and savory components. The order of Wood-Fired Wild Mushrooms was larger than expected. The potato-bacon terrine was nestled atop a tangle of mushrooms, adorned with colorful pea shoots and a trail of romesco sauce. The bacon was wrapped around a deck of mandolined potatoes and baked to a done, but not crispy finish. This was another hit with the group. For our entrees, I ordered the Maple Leaf Farm Duck, one ordered Shrimp & Grits, and the other two ordered the Smoked Gunthorp Farms Pork Chops. When our friend asked about the heat of the Tasso ham featured in the Shrimp & Grits, our server took time to describe it and even brought out a sample before confirming the order. She liked the Tasso which was mild heat wise, but had plenty of flavor. Overall, she liked the shrimp and the heirloom grits with oyster mushrooms and Tasso ham gravy, with house Worchestershire and scallions. I also liked the flavor of the Maple Leaf Farms Duck. I think I liked the combination of blackberry sauce, duck leg confit, and the parsnip puree and hickory roasted turnip more than the actual duck breast itself. The breast was a bit overcooked and slightly dry. The rest of the ingredients were wonderful, including the asparagus side. A near miss on the duck itself, but everything else was 5 star. The two who ordered the pork chops had differing opinions of their meals. For our friend who likes spicy heat, he seemed to enjoy the chop which was moist and crowned the creamed sweet corn, serrano potato pave, green tomato chow chow and was topped with peach BBQ. For my wife, who does not handle heat very well, the serrano seasoning on the potato was too strong and she ended up struggling with the meal. She ended up giving most of the pave to our friend. She thought the corn was really good, but noted that the chop itself had little flavor beyond the one note of heat. (Confirmed by our guest.) So, if they took a bite of just the chop, it was bland. Our friend was able to pair the chop with some of the other flavors more successfully, but still thought he would prefer to try something else the next time he dined here. To wrap up the evening, we ordered two of the dessert options: a collection of chocolates and a "Decadent" Chocolate Cake that came with vanilla ice cream and a flavored whipped cream. I am not sure if all the molded chocolates were made in house or acquired, but they had a nice dark chocolate flavor that melted in my mouth. They contained several flavors of complimentary tastes. We got nine pieces of chocolate and creamy mousse like scoop for $8. Good flavors, but lacking a Wow factor. Same for the Decadent Cake. Comments were that it was much like a brownie with ice cream. Pretty standard and relatively small portion for another $8. So, some of the small plates and the service were Wow, level 5. However, some of the entrees lacked a bit due to the factors sited above. Like many of the avant garde restaurants in town, you have to roll the dice (and sometimes use a dictionary) to figure out what to order. I can't say there is a single plate that could be described as routine.
