Union Restaurant is one of my favorite spots in Pasadena, love their pastas! In addition. I orderedthe grilled octopus. Since it's usually one of my favorite dishes, I had high expectations, but it came out a little chewy and didn't quite hit the mark. Overall experience is still great. The staff is incredibly friendly, the location right on Union Street is ideal, and there's plenty of parking across the street on a parking structure. Staff is super friendly and it's a cute place. Loved their pastas so much that I ordered a second portion of pasta to take home. Definitely will be back.

Good pasta but expensive for what it is. They go tapas-style, encouraging you to order multiple small dishes to share. Two people will easily run over $100 and you'll still leave hungry. The space is nice and the pasta is unique and tasty. I loved the ragu; the squid ink pasta was good but not quite as memorable. Bluefin tuna was nice too, though nothing special. Portion sizes are tiny across the board, and the wine bar, which looked appealing, lost its charm once I saw the menu prices. If you're looking to splurge on a date night, this could be your spot. But I do believe there is better pasta around Pasadena where you won't leave starving.

High quality ingredients & amazingly curated dishes - simply delicious, including starters and entrees. The service is good. The ambiance is good as well. The star of the show is most certainly the food and quality ingredients. Truly a place to experience for a culinary treat and what brings me back, time and time again.

This place is ok. The service was mid and many things took a long time to come out. I wouldn't say the workers were particularly friendly. We were also served the wrong dish once. Also, my party had a reservation, but the table wasn't ready when we got there. Had to wait ~15 min. Strangely enough, they skipped our party and tried phone cling another party who was walk in before seating us. Not sure if it's because we're Asian. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. Food wise, I'd say it's above average. Not the best Italian food I've had, but definitely a step above Bucca and Olive Garden. Doesn't compare at all to what I've had in Italy though. In the Pasadena area, I think Mi Piacce is a better Italian choice imo (although I'm not the biggest fan of them either). The only dish that stood out to me was the citrus salad, because of its unique composition and refreshing flavor. Ambience was a bit strange too. If you sit in the rear section, you have to walk through the kitchen and toilet. Not really a fan of that, although that more of a building issue than the restaurant's issue.

The food was excellent. The standout was the pork chop - it was so juicy and tender. The service was also great. The restaurant is dimly lit and comfortable. I like that they serve family style, made it fun to order several dishes and share. Overall, a great dining experience.

Michelin recognized, I was excited to try this high-rated/reviewed restaurant in Old Town. I easily secured a 4pm reservation for a party of 5 around a week in advance. We were quickly seated, even though everyone was not present. The host and server were both very patient. When all of us were finally seated and reviewing the menu, the server came to share about the restaurant. She shared that it was a place that recommended family-style ordering and that, for a party of our size, she recommended 6-7 dishes. My group and I don't often see each other, and 4/5 of us happened to want the same dish. For that reason, we "broke the news" that we would be ordering 3 drinks, 1 appetizer, 4 of the same pasta dishes each, and another pasta dish for person #5. The second we shared that it was an immediate and palpable energy shift. I thought I was imagining it at first, but then my friends confirmed it after we left the restaurant. Our server's face seemingly fell to a frown. For the rest of our time there, service was quick and short. There was also a feeling of friction when we needed to split the bill amongst us. I understand that if an actual family or couple came to the restaurant it would not only be the sensible but alluring choice to try a few of the dishes together. However, it simply didn't make sense for us. These dishes didn't end up being large portions. The pastas came out to be perfect for one person and potentially impossible to share amongst more than two folks. Furthermore, it's not like we ordered less than the recommended amount; it ended up being the 6 total! There was no loss of income, no shortchanging on the tip, etc. It was simply confusing. In terms of the food, it was honestly tasty. The Lemon Soda was refreshing, focaccia flavorful, burrata fresh, and Cacio e Pepe decadent. The thick noodles and creamy sauce were honestly very delicious. As a layperson, I think this is a lesson for restaurants to consider that their average patron may not want to feel stifled by arbitrary rules that don't negatively impact the kitchen or staff. Especially if there isn't an explicit message that it's a pre-fixed menu or omakase, we all just didn't understand what the deal was about.

Cute restaurant with cool vibes. Name of restaurant was very discreet, almost missed it. There are both outdoor and indoor seating. I was surprised how far back the restaurant goes. It's larger than it looks. The staff was friendly and our server was helpful and help made some recommendations. The pasta dishes were delicious and flavorful. They are shareable. I really enjoyed the Squid Ink Lumache. It was different and unique to what I'm used to. The bread & giardinere were yummy. It was a great combination. Reservations highly recommended.

Was searching for "Squid Ink Pasta", this is the closest restaurant that pops out. I called in to place a take-out order, the service told me will be ready in 30 mins, I asked if it could be sooner, and he changed it to 15 mins. We arrived at the store a little bit after 20 mins since I called, but the front server told me it's not ready yet. The store sign was not very obvious; we couldn't tell if it was the restaurant unless we didn't confirm with the staff. The staffs are friendly. But OMG, this squid in pasta is not worth nearly $40. First the portion, when I opened the box, only 1/4 of the box was filled. Did some eat most of the order before giving it to me? Second why is there a service charge on the bill for a take-out order? Because you are Michelin 2025 restaurant, so you are by law required to charge that? Thrid the pasta itself is so SALTY. There are at least 10 oz of salt in there. This pasta is not comparable in any way to the ones I had in NY(which is truly authentic and GOOD) If I was you, skip this place.

Everything was 10/10!! The service and every dish were amazing. One of our dishes never came out, and by the time we were finished eating, I told our waitress to cancel it if it hadn't been made yet. They ended up bringing it out anyway and even comped the dish for us and told us that they weren't going to charge us a corkage fee! def will be coming back to try other items on the menu. Ordered: Pork meatballs:10/10 not salty and paired perfectly with the sourdough Charred octopus: 10/10 cooked to perfection Kampachi crudo: 9/10 very refreshing Broccolini: 10/10 light and flavorful Tonnarelli cacio e pepe: 7.5/10 wasn't my fave. First time trying cacio e pepe and it tasted too saucy for me but the noodle texture was good

And we finally tried this restaurant after all the hypes but oh so disappointing! Food is terrible, it comes out quick, cold and tasteless. It's more like a fast food restaurant rather enjoyable Italian restaurant. I understand people complain in reviews here about food takes time to come out but hey folks if you want fast food go to fast food restaurant. Union charges circa $40 each dish and yet delivers like fast food restaurant. Winter Citrus Salad, half orange cut with no pomegranate utterly flavorless, ordered two dish different pasta both were lacking flavor. Who is the chef here? I make better pasta at home than this chef. How is a so called Italian restaurant doesn't bring a small basket of bread and butter to table as you sit, and charges $15 for that wooow chocking! So after reading review I guess the owner/chef has changed here and the taste of dishes has become dull. Such a shame! I don't like to leave bad reviews but utterly disappointing. Not sure if we dare to give another try and spend another two hundred dollar to get disappointed! I have to think about it.

    Local Wild Mushroom 10/10

Dining at Union was supposed to be a simple, yet fun and delicious anniversary meal. Unfortunately, it ending up being a drawn out and disappointing one. Of the six dishes we ordered, only one of them impressed us. The Bib Gourmand distinction led me to believe our experience would be better than this, but the worst offense was the wait between courses. There was more than a ten minute wait between each dish with the longest being 25 minutes between our last entree and dessert. The Local Wild Mushrooms appetizer was the dish that WOWed us. After our first bite, the gloves were off and it was a race to the last bite. Neither, my girlfriend nor I have had a dish like this. It was delicious. As I'm adding photos to my review I realized there was a hair in our Cacio E Pepe. I have a buzz cut and my gf's hair is past her shoulders. The hair in the dish is not ours. This was an unforgettable anniversary dinner, but for all the wrong reasons.

My wife and I met up with friends at Union last night, and it ended up being one of those dinners where the food, the conversation, and the atmosphere all clicked perfectly. We were seated in the back, in the second room, which turned out to be a great spot, quiet enough to talk, cozy, and a nice change from the main dining area. I ordered the squid ink garganelli, and my wife had the tonnarelli cacio e pepe. We also shared the meatballs to start. Everything was genuinely delicious. The pasta stood out the most, the texture, the bite, the seasoning, just spot on. You can tell they take the craft seriously here. The service matched the food: attentive without hovering, friendly, and on top of everything all night. If I had one critique, it would be the bathroom. It felt a bit old and rundown compared to the rest of the restaurant. Not a dealbreaker by any means, just something that stood out. I get that upgrades are expensive, and honestly, we were there for the food, which absolutely delivered. Overall, we had a fantastic experience, and I'm already eyeing the duck for my next visit. Union is definitely a Pasadena gem, and we'll be back soon.

What We Ordered - Pork Meatballs - Charred Octopus - Brussels Sprouts Salad - Squid Ink Lumache - Rigatoni Timballo - Spaghetti - Olive Oil Cake This is my sister's favorite pasta place. We went for her birthday and left very surprised. Everything tasted great (maybe except for the Brussel Sprouts Salad, I was not a fan). My husband and sister's favorite pasta was the squid ink! It was light lemon cream sauce. I thought it was a bit too light for me. My favorite was the spaghetti and the charred octopus. The olive oil cake was super moist. I'm not sure if I went on an off day my first time but, this most recent visit was delicious!!

    Ask the Community - Union

Can we bring our own wine? Corkage fees?

Yes. I don't know the corkage.

    Are dogs allowed outside?

    Yes!

Are there high chairs for toddlers?

    What are weekend hours?

    4-9pm

    Do you take walk-ins?

Only when they aren't impacted, which is nearly never!

    What is the corkage fee?

Really? This is a casual hamburger joint and can't bring own alcoholic drinks.

How do you order for curbside pickup? been calling this place for two days and no one picked up the phone. Their phone message directed us to order online for takeouts but the system has been unavailable? Very confused.

We usually order direct here: https://www.toasttab.com/union-pasadena/v3

Are there any meat or fish dishes? Is this only a pasta place?

There are 3 meat dishes and a fish main. Also a fish appetizer (crudo)

Are we allowed to bring our own wine and if so, what is the corkage fee?

Yes. As of March 2021, the corkage fee is $35 per BYOB, with a two bottle max.

Are there any vegetarian options (besides salad)?

They often have pasta or other dishes and delicious vegetables. There's usually one or two options other than salads.

When will it be open for dine in?

It's open for dine in now!

Do they have gluten free options?

They have salad, vegetable and meat dishes that should do the trick

    Are there vegan options?

You can get any of the salads without cheese, but that's it. Their homemade pastas are made with eggs. I wouldn't recommend Union for vegans, although it works for vegetarians who are fine with dairy and eggs.

Is it dressy or casual atmosphere?

It's a small intimate location but feel free to go casual as most people do.

How is the wait time on a Saturday night? I've tried calling three times no answer, I've emailed a few days ago and still no answer. Do I just show up with my party?

I would make a reservation through open table. It's a small establishment and they do fill up quickly. They won't seat you until your entire party has arrived.

Hi , can I bring my kids?

Yes I brought my baby there and they were very nice about it. The place can be noisy though.

Do you have a corkage fee?

Corkage is $35 per bottle, max 2 bottles per party.

Do you have a happy hour?

    No, unfortunately

Being in a party of 4 girls coming from high tea, we were dressed in elegant dresses, first comment was asking if we were coming from church, followed by eye flutters, short "okay" with an upward inflation to a joke about the day, an impatient comment about hurrying up and trying the wine while we were talking, asked for water when we were out, were left to pour the rest of our wine, didn't ask how the food was all the while was attentive to the table behind us, the cherry on top comment was when we were discussing the bill at the end, he was hovering at the table behind ours, then when we were ready, we asked to split the bill into 2, my portion on mine and the rest on another card, he then said "this isn't like a drive through, we can't do it that way" so I asked him to explain his comment, cause it was passive agressive and rude. After he wasnt able to becuase he wasnt expecting me to call out his rude comment, I had to then break it down and specify what I had ordered, he then sold "okayyyy....so how much, cause we don't itemize?" Gabriel knows my style so well, and the arrangement felt like it was made just for me unique, elegant, full of unexpected shapes, texture and beauty. Every flower felt intentional, and the whole bouquet had this effortless, artistic flow. It truly made our anniversary unforgettable. I can't recommend Purple Wine and Bloom enough. Our experiences have always been good. It's a quaint wine shop with a nice selection of varietals, blends, and even a few craft beers. There's a small tasting bar in the back which usually features a flight of whites and reds, along with several other selections by the glass, as well as charcuterie boards, olives, nuts, and truffle popcorn. Lucy (owner), Pattie, Nina, and the rest of the staff are friendly and accommodating, making you feel like family. On occasion, they'll also have live music. We really enjoy Monopole and recommend you check them out when you're in the area.

The menu had many delicious options, and we ended up splitting a cinnamon roll, shrimp Louie salad, BLT, and Quiche Pot Pie. First, let's get into the interior. Superduper cute and has many options for seating, including a sidewalk patio, back patio, and interior dining room. We sat in the dining room and it was comfortable... next time I would probably sit outside for a different scenery. Service was great. I have no complaints about that! It was efficient. The guy was polite and was around when we needed him. The food was delicious, but I really didn't think it was that innovative and thought it was a little bit on the expensive side for what it was (except for the cinnamon roll it was priced accordingly and so good hot!). The BLT was very average and I thought the bacon seemed a little old, good fries, but again it's not anything special. I expected more with the quiche pot pie, but it was really delicious and the endive salad was a nice accompaniment. We really enjoyed the shrimp Louie salad--very fresh and appreciated it was not doused in dressing. I had the garden Siesta cocktail and my friend had one of the spritz-- as a lightweight it did not do anything to me hahaha... All in all a nice leisurely meal, but the flavors and execution was not super memorable for the price point. No h8 though--would go again!

Go downstairs, whether by stairs or elevator... where there are multiple bathrooms. And ask the nearest person how to get to Ladies and Gentlemen, to be let in. Fun, and whimsical, and definitely a space with a theme. First and more importantly, the cocktails and the food is definitely quality. And they will charge you quality pricing for the luxuriousness of it all. Seating, tables, candles, ambiance. I mean, the walls lined up with crafted skulls ain't gonna pay for itself. The staff is friendly, and helpful. And classy. The places oozes class. A great place to chat and catch up with friends. Where the ambient noise isn't so loud that you really need to raise your voice to talk. As a single person who came with a book to read and study... it's dim lighting so I had to make use of candlelight. This really is meant to be more of a social spot. I came in on a weekday to catch the Suntory promotion, which came with some nice collectibles to pair with your highball. I feel like every cocktail I've had here so far has a great sense of balance and technique. I'll probably come back and try their omakase course of cocktails at some point. Is it "kami no glass?" If you're looking for a cute place with amazing drinks that are all designed with inventive cocktails inspired by different countries, this is so worth checking out. Pricey but so worth the experiences and drinks. We started off our night here to celebrate our wedding anniversary. The staff was so beyond nice and welcoming. The inside is absolutely gorgeous and the ambience is the perfect date night setting. Brandon, our server, was so beyond nice! Open to answering our questions and giving us pretty good recommendations! We got the Japanese milk bread and patatas bravas as snacks. The milk bread was complemented perfectly with the two butters we got - one sweet and one savory. The patatas bravas, omg, they were so delicious. Made with scallions and sriracha aioli, hard to dislike, when paired with perfectly crispy potatoes. As a gin lover, i was so intrigued by the sands of time, and let me tell you it did not disappoint. Who knew gin paired so well with the different herbals and ingredients paired in this drink?! So delicious and you can brew the drink longer to really let the flavors settle! The presentation, 10/10! I liked it so much I got it twice. My husband started off with the duck fat old fashioned. He's a huge lover of old fashioneds and was intrigued. He loved how smooth it was. He then got me and my best friend which is close to a Manhattan and loved the Asian twist to it. We laughed at the presentation, it was perfect. Definitely interested in trying the omakase drink experience, will definitely be back!
