They had 2 vegan options when I went, a sugar/cinnamon donut and a blackberry, lime & basil donut. Needless to say, I wanted both but showed restraint and only ordered the blackberry, lime & basil. It was SO GOOD! As for price, I thought it was affordable for the size of the treat. My donut was about $3. The 100% vegan shop down the row had donuts 1/2 the size for about $4. So flavorful... sweet yes, but NOT sugary... and the flavors are so intense and evolve, in your mouth, into multiple levels of pleasure as you chew. The complexity of the blending of flavors helps to slow down even the slowest of chewers, because one's mouth will screen... slow down, this has to be enjoyed. Let me say first and foremost that I have always been a HUGE donut fan. Like completely obsessed with donuts. I recently went vegan and had to say goodbye to so many great donut places, but luckily union square makes a few vegan options. Today the options were cinnamon sugar and one covered in coconut shreds. I hate coconut shreds so went for the cinnamon sugar. My boyfriend and I bought one (they are pricey at a little less than $4 each) with the intention of sharing it. I took one bite and told him to go back and get one for himself bc I wasn't sharing. It was sooooooooo soft! The cinnamon sugar was delicious and again the donut was so ridiculously soft I am obsessed. The donuts are good, but their ability to actually keep them in supply is really poor. They sell out of donuts on a reg and I don't know what sort of hipster bullshit this is, but it's as if they like it? It happens so often that I assume the owner, the manager or the staff likes the idea of this. I mean is it some sort of exclusivity thing? I don't know but I just feel like it's a way better business plan to actually just meet the demands of your customers instead of constantly being sold out... it happens almost every single time I've tried --which is a lot-- and when I do I get the snicklefritz... You shouldn't have to show up when it opens to get your first choice donut (Sea Salted Bourbon Caramel). I'm sure they can plan better for this. They'd probably make a lot more money too. If you want a designer donut and for it to actually be there, just go to Blackbird Donuts or Kane's or even like Whole Foods or something. I like this place, and I want to love them, but I really am fed up with not being served. I tried the vegan blackberry lime basil doughnut & it was perfect, not too sweet & the dough was fluffy & soft. The blackberry lime basil glaze was sweet with a twist of tart, I couldn't taste the basil in it though so for people that are not basil fans you don't even taste the flavor. read more

Way overrated. We traveled throughout NE and had dozens of donuts and these were awful and not worth the almost $4 each. Everyone in our group like different kinds from raised, yeasty, cake, and in between. And no one liked these. The dough is heavy, thick, dry, and overwhelming little flavor. They try to frost, glaze, or otherwise coat them to change that but still lacking. We had the coffee donut which tasted like burnt coffee. The hazelnut was not sweet at all, not even slightly and the browned butter tasted like the bottom of a pan with wood-flavored hazelnuts. The Boston cream had a bland cream and the chocolate frosting was rich but not like chocolate; it was coffee flavored. The honey dip was dry and bland as well. Best honey dip is Levitts in New Hampshire (good apple fritter too but don't get anything else from them either). Overall a huge was of money. We went to Kane' s in Boston as well and they were much better but more like a super sweet/candy dessert. read more

Today, I was at the Boston Public Market and decided to give USD another try. It's been a long time since I last tried their donuts with my last experience being sub-par. Maybe this time I would be pleasantly surprised. Sadly, this was not the case. Their donuts are still as disappointing as I remember them. I got the Orange Mango yeast-raised variety. Once again, I tasted ZERO Orange or Mango flavor in the glaze. It might as well have been a plain glaze. The donut itself was dense (not in a good way), chewy, stringy and had the consistency of white bread. I took a few bites and tossed the rest as it was simply not worth the calories. From now on, I will stick with Kane's who excel at making melt-in-your mouth light and fluffy yeast-raised donuts. Once again, I simply don't understand the hype surrounding this place. We had three donuts. One good, one average and one bad, so that averages out to ..well...average. The best was the raspberry jelly despite having granulated sugar (I have a tactile aversion to granulated sugar on my donut) and the worst was the Vietnamese glaze with the caramel crunch in the middle. The raspberry was full of delicious fresh tasting jelly whereas the Vietnamese glaze has an odd taste which seemed like old oil and was greasy. it was good! got the hazelnut and sea salt bourbon. the sea salt bourbon didnt have a strong flavor, and but the hazelnut had an amazing crunch to it. the dough is very soft and chewy, which makes it amazing. went around noon after brunch on a saturday, and it was already selling out a lot of flavors. worth a try if you are visiting, but go in the morning! read more

Loved the donuts here! They were very big and sweet! I got 6 to go and struggled to eat them all so I just took a bite out of all of them and saved them for later. For a Union Square joint, this place is expensive. I bought a very mediocre drip coffee for $3. Was I ordering a latte? The average ticket here for two people is somewhere in the range of $20+ - for donuts! We're talking about DONUTS and COFFEE?!! There's a ton of hype about this place, but of the 4 types of donuts I tried, the only one that was worthy of praise was the maple bacon donut. It was simultaneously savory and sweet. The others were sickeningly sweet and didn't offer much in the way of culinary uniqueness (names like "basil lime" are misleading when sugar overpowers everything). For a shop that seems to pride itself on offering a unique spin on something as mundane as donuts, this is simply an over-hyped one show pony. In other parts of the country (e.g. TX), there are dozens of shops like this that offer donuts on the cheap. Lastly, the employees, while not unfriendly, seem like robots. I've been fairly satisfied with union square donuts till now, the previous yelps saying pretty much the sole flavor you'll be tasting is sugar is entirely right. But who isn't looking for a sugary mess in a donut? However I totally agree the flavors need to be much more pronounced. However I just went and got their seasonal gingerbread glazed donut and it was BAD. so bad that the sparrows outside my house have gingerbread glazed covered beaks as we speak. The donut was so ugly and looked so messy and rushed. The glaze was completely uneven some parts of the donut being completely uncovered. The donut itself was burnt yet still tasted oddly wet. The gingerbread flavor is just god awful. So artificial and waaay too sweet.
