My boyfriend had a hankering for one a couple of weeks back when we visited, and it being his birthday, I decided to indulge him with the donut of his choice. We were there somewhat late in the day (get there early to have your pick of the litter!), so many of the daily offerings were sold out. However, it was a blessing in disguise, because otherwise, we may have never tried the Orange Cardamom and Poppyseed Donut on our own! It was easily one of the top five donuts I've consumed in recent memory, and paired bright, fresh orange glaze with warm cardamom and earthy poppyseed all atop a pillowy yeast donut. It was a pretty big donut, too! These are kind of pricy, but you're definitely getting a large portion for your money. I was full! The girl working there was very nice, and overheard us talking about our plans that evening for my boyfriend's birthday dinner. She gave us a Birthday Cake Donut on the house! Not cheap but this donut is twice the size and ten times the flavor of anything you'll get from those DD people. Totally worth it. With my coffee from their neighbor, I stopped here for a donut. Interesting flavors including Maple Bacon and Sea Salted Bourbon Caramel and Raspberry Jam, but my eye settled on the Brown Butter Hazelnut Crunch. Go nuts for donuts inside Haymarket square aka downtown Boston Commons' long term indoor popup pavilion priding itself on craft treats made from locally sourced ingredients. Cruel irony? They didn't have any Boston Cream donuts, the one treat I looked most forward to having on a recent business trip to Boston. When I asked the guy working, he said they don't usually carry that kind. The woman who helped us made a lot of good suggestions (e.g. we have vanilla bean in back, or if you like chocolate too can do a black and white, pointing out the donut with bourbon, etc.) The texture of these donuts is perfect. I think they use great ingredients too. I was tempted to take off a star because the buttery hazelnut donut I had was a bit too sweet for my taste, and had a frosting variety that was too hardened, but I think that's a personal preference thing. We had the vietnamese coffee flavor and Belgian chocolate. The Belgian chocolate is good, but be careful it's pretty rich. And the vietnamese coffee taste nothing like vietnamese coffee...we're from socal, so we know what we're talking about here! It's definitely a let down and we wouldn't recommend that flavor. But the donut itself has pretty good texture and clean taste afterwards. They are pretty pricey, gourmet donut and all, and they taste pretty rich and definitely on the sweet side. Tldr: The coffee flavor in the Viet coffee donut was not that strong. The brown sugar hazelnut crumble donut didn't have much hazelnut flavor or crunch from the nut. I preferred the sea salt bourbon donut the best. Note: this place isn't that friendly in providing boxes for qty under 6 (more on that below) I was excited to try the brown sugar hazelnut crumble donut since it looked so good in the pictures. It's is not as crunchy as the pictures online suggested. It also had more of a nutty peanut taste than a hazelnut one which was kinda disappointing. You're not going to miss much if you don't get this. In terms of flavor, I preferred my friend's sea salt bourbon caramel donut better. It was one of the more unique flavor I've tasted. I also got a Viet coffee donut but it's was pretty simple donut and didn't have that strong of a coffee taste. (But still better than the hazelnut crumble). This place is not that friendly for take out boxes. The employee said they can only do boxes for 6 or 12 donuts. This makes it really difficult if you want to take some home or to the airport. I don't want to present $3-4 donuts in a paper bag to friends with the glazes mixing together as you carry the bag. My friends and I had initially ordered 3 donuts and ate at the station. We wanted to order four more donuts for some friends (we only did 3 more since they ran out of the sea salt bourbon) but wanted to get a box. I asked if she could count the previous ones we ordered like 10min ago but no luck. We ultimately got the donuts but in a paper bag that wasn't that travel-friendly. I wish management would provide boxes for smaller quantities, especially since their donuts aren't that cheap. Well, about $7 later, I ended up trying 2 donuts: the vanilla bean and the raspberry-filled. The donuts: they're okay. There was something off-putting about the texture. The donuts themselves were not cake donuts nor were they yeast. They were a combination of both best described as a very dense yeast. Definitely not my style but I can understand how others would enjoy them. The raspberry-filled was very delicious. The filling was a bit too sweet but it tasted yummy anyway. The vanilla bean was okay. Again, the texture threw me off and the glaze coating tasted very artificial to me. Still, I can see how others would enjoy this donut because my husband loved it. I often don't go to the gourmet donut shops and now I understand why. I'm more into the donut shops that sell donuts for $1 and that have been open for 50+ years. The displays at this shop looked so tempting so we ended up getting a Boston Cream Chocolate Doughnut. The filling was warm and delicious. Price is alright around $3.50 for one doughnut. Each donut had an abundance of filling bursting out and you could tell each component was fresh and homemade.
