My dad is 81 and still wears these boots to work, so they're not just shoes... they're important to his daily life. I honestly thought they might be unsalvageable, but he did an excellent job. He took the time to thoroughly explain what materials he was going to use and why, which I really appreciated. It's clear he takes pride in his craft and truly cares about doing the job right. I've had off white shoes for years that obviously had stains and black splotches (from driving). But they were so comfortable so I had them do their best to make it look good. This review is based SOLELY upon a telephone conversation with the proprietor minutes ago. I have a pair of Birkenstock sandals that are well issued but in need of a little leather footbed RE-glueing. Universal Repair in Newhall was recommended by a Birkie dealer, so I called. I am very well able to describe almost anything in words so as to be understood, but the proprietor stopped me from explaining my needs and told me that, "I can't tell you anything about the cost of the repair without seeing the sandals." Newhall is a pretty good drive from La Verne, so I wanted a ballpark idea of the cost before committing. Now, I guess Universal is out. Thanks for nothing. This is an amendment to my original review. About an hour after posting my 1 star review, I received a call back from Joe, the owner and proprietor of Universal Shoe Repair, wanting to know why I had given him a 1 star review. We had an in depth conversation for about 25 minutes during which time I explained my reasoning and he explained the ins and outs of being a 1 man shop. Apparently, cobbler is not a vocation many seek, and he cannot find an assistant. He is a busy man and cannot afford to waste time on the phone while his work piles up. He apologized for being brusque, and I truly understood his point of view. In all fairness, I think my initial review was I'll conceived by myself...I do not know the intricacies of running a 1 man shop. After our conversation, he took time to listen to my needs and he gave me a fair ballpark quote for the repair. Since Joe is a true old school cobbler, I will visit him next week. read more

I took in an old pair of Merrell shoes last week that were my knock-around shoes, about 10 years old. (I have a newer pair of the same exact shoes that are my dress Merrells) The old Merrells have never had anything done to them to be taken care of, not even polished. They are just basically black leather. All of the finish was gone on the toe area of both shoe and there was an area about 3/8 inch by more than an inch that looked like it had been hit by a belt sander. When I brought it in, the man said he couldn't guarantee how good it would look, but he would do his best. I was shock, I could tell where the mar had been because I knew where it was, but I don't think anyone else would have ever noticed it. They look better than my dress Merrells, so I guess I'm going to have to bring those in now. I wish I had taken a before and after picture, but didn't even think of it. Great job. read more
