Horrible place!! Wouldn't recommend it!!! I came in with a pic of a lawnmower I have that had the model number and I brought the screw I needed for that part. And he came with three of the same screws and never gave back the old one. So I believe his knowledge that it will fit and bought them 2 for 6 freaking dollars!! Then came home and it wasn't even the right size!!! And to add on is that one of the guys were laughing about how they bad customer service reviews were and that people are still going to shop there. I took my Husqvarna Weedeater to these these guy 11/27/23 - cost me 82 dollars to fix it - I put about two hours work on the machine (I'm a homeowner that has a few tools I use) . It became winter . . . I got the machine out around 3/10/24 . . . Put another hour and one half work on the weedeater and it began doing the same thing. I take it back - explaining how this makes no sense - they decided I needed to rebuild the piston! I don't agree with the diagnosis. Less than four hours labor (on the machine) later, the issue has become a 286$ fix! I went to pick it up - cost 20$ to get it back and it is in pieces! Pieces! 100$ later it's in pieces! I took my lawn mower and weed eater to University Lawnmower. They said they checked my lawnmower, which they didn't do, and tried to charge me. I got my weed eater fixed for $115 two months ago and used it once, but now it doesn't work. Now, they said they only give a 30-day warranty. Beware of the University Lawnmower. This is the worst place for customers. The owner became aggressive and accusatory with me when I returned a chainsaw that failed the first time I used it. He refused to contact the representative of the manufacturer about a replacement. I contacted the manufacturer and got authorization to return it. The guy who sold it to me said that because I'd contacted the rep. and he didn't like that, I was accused of tampering with the chainsaw. He then decided that he'd call me the slang word for a penis. I brought my Echo weed eater to be repaired in September 2019 and before the summer ended 2020 it broke down again with the exact same problem. When I tried to get clarity with the staff on why, not even a year later the same problem I told hold on for the store manager which by the way never got on the phone but the same guy with the bad attitude did. I'm a residential homeowner who just moved to Houston after living in Las Vegas, NV for 27 years. We don't have grass there (or even water!) but here in Houston there's a LOT of grass. For the first time ever, I have to own a lawnmower. The HOA little old ladies are ready to jump all over us if the grass gets taller than 4"...!!! I was looking to buy a new mower but all I see is the new cordless electric ones ($$$$$) and the gas ones are also expensive and look to be made of cheap parts and plastic. So what if they have a warranty! If you need warranty work good luck with getting it done in less than 3 months. I found a used Husqvarna gas push mower. It was hard to start and one of the cables was stretched out. I brought it in to University Lawnmower for a new blade and plug and cable and the next day the Service Manager called to tell me it was ready. The lawn mower works like new. I am more than satisfied and would recommend University Lawnmower to anyone including residential customers like me. I don't think the negative reviews from others complaining that University only cares about business customers are fair. When I was there at their shop you can see that they are taking care of hundreds of professional lawn care businesses with large riding mowers and other heavy equipment. They are very busy and obviously University is taking care of them or else they would be going to some other place. I think the professional landscapers are too busy to leave a positive review, and maybe not all of them even go online, leaving just the few negative reviewer's comments, some of which sound like they expected VIP service for their weed whacker. I took my Stihl blower in to be repaired. When dropped it off the clerk told me I would receive a call before they fixed the equipment. I dropped it off on Friday and was promised a call later that afternoon or no later than Monday. I didn't hear back from them ever. I called them on Wednesday and spoke with the service manager. He said he had to order an air filter that was on back order. Again he promised a call within the hour. 5 hours later...still no call, I happened to be driving by so I thought I would stop in to see if the blower was fixed. Indeed it was...The total cost was $112...A brand new blower would have cost me $140. I explained to the clerk that I was supposed to receive a call before repairs were done so that I could decide how I wanted to handle the repair. The same lady who told me I would receive a call when I dropped it off changed her statement to, "we only call when repairs exceed $120." The blower works great so they did the work but I am giving them one star for their lack of communication, follow through and over all customer service. read more

This place is so bad it's hard to believe. They are an authorized Dixon dealer so I took my zero turn here to have engine repair and maintenance. The engine was burning and leaking oil. They replaced the valve cover gasket and when I picked it up and took it home it was still leaking oil. I took it back and when I picked it up the second time there was no oil leak. But only because they were running the engine with no oil in it! I will never go back, this was a waist of time, money and they put my expensive equipment at risk. So I went into the store to get some fuel lines replacement for my Craftman 6.2 pushmower. I tried to talk to some of the worker. They don't really speak english well but for what i gather. They just want me to go inside, buy stuff, and leave. And they treated me as if they want to see how much money i can make off you. They try to up-sale that it was fuel line connection that i need, as well the fuel line. I went home and looked it up, and it was just the fuel line i need. They don't treat their residential customer well at all. Another issues: I also got yell at by the owner for fixing my fuel line in the parking lot. It was just a simple fix, (maybe 10-15 mins) but i was told by two different people that it's not a shop and i need to leave the parking lot. I won't go back to this place. I would take my business somewhere else. This happen to be very close to my house, but i would not go back. They are not good at customer services. It's all about making money. Making money is a by product of good customer service, which they are not. I cant believe it's still being open. read more

I've been going here for years and just now noticed the low rating on Yelp. I have never had a problem and they always get my lawnmower, weed eaters and blowers in for repair and out in a reasonable time. They misplaced my weed eater once but that's because the tag came off. They let me go in the back and look through all the weed eaters to find it. There is another lawnmower place nearby and anytime I take something in they say it will take several weeks to get it back. I get it. University Lawnmower caterers to the professional landscaper. The carry a broad range of professional grade equipment, and cater to that clientele. Unfortunately, I am not one of those, I am a homeowner who chose University Lawnmower because they are close to me. Really shoddy customer service. I left a brand new mower in their shop that had a warranty issue and after two weeks, they hadn't even looked at it, and when pressed for a time they could I only got a "Maybe next week" response. I picked it up and took it to Southwest Fertilizer and had it done in a day. I also wanted my chainsaw repaired. It needed a new starter rope and had been sitting for awhile and needed the carb cleaned. They cleaned the carb and did a "tune-up" which on a chainsaw is replacing the plug, which it didn't need because the spark plug was brand new. I know because I replaced it. I picked it up and took it home and when I tried to use it two weeks later, the starter rope extended and wouldn't retract. I took it back and they diagnosed it as needing a new flywheel. I left it with them expecting that since it I had just paid to have it repaired, they would fix it under warranty. Nope, this time they wanted $150.00 to repair a problem that I had already paid them to fix once. We negotiated down to $96.00 which I grudgingly paid, but I won't go back, and neither should anyone else. read more

I've had a terrible experience with this shop. This is the first shop I was able to come across that could sharpens the blades on my reel lawnmower, however, in the future, I'll just buy the kit to sharpen myself. Nobody acknowledged me when I came in and walked past me on multiple occasions because they decided to close an hour earlier than they quoted me. When I dropped off my lawnmower they said that it would be ready the next day. I specifically asked when they closed and they said 4pm. I arrived at 3:30pm to pick up my machine but they decided to close at 3pm. After calling for a manager they allowed me to pick up my machine, but their dismissiveness of my business makes me advise other customers to take their business to other companies that appreciate your business. read more

Took my Dixon zero turn mower in for repair! Had a friend drop it off and he told them to call me with an estimate! Instead they called him, I called and ask to speak to service man and after an extended hold time he said he didn't have my ticket and placed me on hold again after another extended hold time he came back and said he couldn't find my ticket, that he would find it and call me back! Three times I called to speak to him after that and could never get him on the phone again! Took it in for steering adjustments, poor blade operation and a fly wheel! Finally got it authorized and paid over $500.00 to repair but wouldn't replace the starter they said was bad and wanted over $1,000.00 for.. took over 1 month to repair... got it back today and it still won't turn left and as soon as the blade hits y'all grass it stops cutting!!! Maybe I have to old a model or wrong brand or something ?? But if you say you can fix it? Then do it. If you can't fix it then say so!! I wouldn't trust them again with anything! read more

I went to this place despite seeing all of these 1 star reviews because it is close to home and I figured they would have the part I needed. I went in and was immediately greeted by a man with a smile and an enthusiastic "Hello sir! How can we help you today?" I handed him the old part and told him what I needed and offered to give him the model number for my pressure washer. He said that was okay, that he didn't need it. During the few minutes (maybe 8) that the guy was in the back looking for it, three other people greeted me with the same enthusiastic smile and offer to help. Honestly, I read these reviews here and it's like they were all in some other establishment. I would have given 4 stars but the part was kind of pricey imo. One last note, the 1st review mentioned not getting a call prior to work being done. They now have a sign by the register stating the policy he was told of no calls before work if it's under a certain amount (I think it said $150 but it may have said $120- I didn't pay it much mind). read more

This shop treats commercial business a lot different that it treats residential business. I want to warn anyone thinking of going here to get their personal lawn equipment repaired or even maintained, PLEASE READ THE REVIEWS I brought my riding lawnmower to this business to get a new blade as well as a tune up, and had the following issues. Issue # 1 - After telling me it would be 3 weeks before I could get my lawnmower back, it actually took 3 MONTHS (they said it took a long time to get parts, I call BS on that excuse) Issue # 2 - The very next day after I get the lawn mower back home the blade falls off. This has never ever happened before. When I returned the lawnmower back to University Lawnmower Center (which was not an easy task because I do not have a trailer), they said that it was not their fault there was a faulty piece that caused the blade to fall off. When I asked why wasn't I informed of the faulty piece, they had no answer. The only reply was that I can pay to have that repaired and it would take another 2-3 weeks. . TO sum it all up, had I paid for the initial repair at University on my credit card, I would have stopped payment. I feel like I was cheated and I let the general manager and the owner know and they did not offer any sort of accommodations to make the situation better. I ended up having to take it to Southwest Mower Services, and they had me up and running in 2 days. I have been going to this shop for repairs since it was located in the West University area. I seldom ever go now because of the lack of customer service and indifferent sometimes rude attitude especially if you are unlucky enough to encounter the lady who seems to run the business with her husband. If they don't work on your equipment because it is not one of the 'high end' equipment they sell or service, you are pretty much snubbed at and given a smirk. They used to a friendly neighborhood shop. Apparently times have changed. DO NOT go here if you have residential equipment. If you are a 'pro' then you may feel right at home...or not.. Go to Southwest Mower instead near S, Post Oak. At least they will talk to you in a friendly manner and give good advise whether you buy or service anything there or not. read more

I have been visiting this establishment for over 25 years, but my last few occasions I've noticed a serious lack of concern for customer service. I took my lawn mower for general repairs and was called a week later to come pick it up. When I arrived at 5:20 PM, I was told that my lawn mower was behind 30 other units and I could not get it because those units would have to be moved. I told the representative that I was called in the morning to come pick up my machine and that it was extremely difficult for me to leave work early to make it to their establishment by the 5:30 closing time. The owner approached me and said he was not going to move 30 units just to get to mine, and that that my unit was too heavy to lift over the other mowers. The owner said the time was now after 530, he was closed. He said he had made himself clear and walked away. I needed the blades sharpened on my reel mower. Called or visited other lawnmower repair places or sharpening services who would not even do this kind of work. Brought it here, they agreed to do it without questioning. Gave me a cost and a time estimate, and delivered exactly on both. Loaded and unloaded for me and even gave the reel mower an adjustment and lubrication thrown in. I see the other low ratings here on yelp, but for what I needed them to do, they were spot on. Very bad customer service. Don't come here if you want to get help the right way. I bought a brand new mower, and during my purchase the staff member that was doing the billing mentioned that my warranty included first service oil change free. Well, I went in to get that done and no one told me anything (mind you I mentioned that I was getting the first oil change as told to be free). As soon as they finished I got charged full price for everything and other things I didn't ask to be done. I spoke to the boss Julio and explained to him everything, including the employee name and paperwork he gave me with the hand written notes he marked down for the warranty. Julio said- " Go get cash or swipe your card, I don't care what my employee promised you." WOW.... Is that how you treat customers that have purchased tools from you and a brand new mower $6,500 cash???? Ridiculous how they treat customers. read more

I have been bringing my lawn equipment to this shop - including my 1966 Goodall lawnmower - since 1984 (34 years ago), when they were a small residential repair shop located in the Rice University village area between Greenbriar and Kirby. They have been doing all my equipment repairs since then, and have rebuilt several engines for me over the years and sold me an edger. I have noticed since they moved south on Weslayan near 59 that they have grown into a very large business, in a much larger physical plant with a lot of retail products on a showroom floor, and they have begun catering more and more to the commercial trade. I have known and liked the owner, Julio Trevino, throughout that time span. I will not say that the quality of repair work has been 100% consistently high quality work over that period of time, but I would say it has been high quality over 90% of the time. I have tried other shops at times. I always come back to Julio and University. For one thing, no one else will service my older equipment as parts are tough to find, but again, over 90% of the time, Julio's guys figure out solutions. At times he has some very creative and skillful mechanics. No place will always be 100% consistent with high quality work and customer service, but I doubt many can top this place. Some policies may seem like a pain. For example, like one reviewer said, they won't pull 30 machines out just to get to yours if you come too close to closing time to pick up your repaired equipment. But they open on Saturday mornings from 8-12. Just get there more than 30 minutes before closing time. It's not a high price to pay for good, solid, dependable repair work and friendly service, and they are almost always friendly! I love this place and plan to keep going there until I can't walk anymore. read more

I took my hedge trimmer in to get the blades sharpened. Believing my cheap, old trimmer may not be worth sharpening, I asked the cost and was told $7.50. When I picked it up they tried to charge me $45. Apparently the nice young lady that initially helped me accidently made an error. She confirmed to the manager that she told me the cost was $7.50. The manager/owner insisted the price for this service was $45 regardless of what I was told when I dropped it off. When I pointed out I could buy a new one for that price which is why I asked the cost, he continued to charge me $45. He then made derogatory comments that I should not bring my items to his store if I do not have a job making enough to pay for it. I left the trimmer and vowed never to return. I kept thinking I was on Candid Camera. The owner's behavior was bizarre. Do not go there. read more

Just took my reel mower in to be sharpened great job. Callled and let me know that the reel had a lot of knicks in it.. Went and picked it up saw no knicks Great job,, reasonable priced. Will be going back. A little far to drive I live in Fulshear, but worth it. Has very good service and were done in two days. Based upon some of the other reviews and them being geared toward commercial guys,,, go there in the off season I did very pleased. read more

Yes, they are geared toward the commercial customer but will readily answer questions and give advice to the retail buyer. The last time I took my lawnmower in for a tune-up, the lawnmower was leaking so much gas that I couldn't keep it in my garage that evening because of the dangerous amount of fumes from the leaking gas. I don't have a lot of free time for yard work, so I just ignored the lawnmower that season and had someone cut the lawn for me. I finally found time to work on the lawnmower myself the next season and found that the mechanic at University Lawnmower had obviously forgotten to install the rubber seat in the carburetor. This appeared to explain why it was leaking gas. When I eventually had time to go back to University Lawnmower Center to explain the mechanic's error, I was told that they would charge me for any repair and offered no apology let alone any small discount towards fixing the problem. I've been going to University Lawnmower for 20+ years. Surely I thought I was worth a little courtesy for their obvious oversight. I was very surprised they were willing to lose a customer of 20+ years without any offer of a correction or even an apology. I am now reading reviews in search of a new reputable lawnmower repair shop. read more
