Yesterday i tried 2 large pepperoni pizzas. Both pizzas failed the flop test because it had way too much sauce. The undercarriage was cooked well, yet the top of the pie was undercooked, greasy, and very doughy (not crispy). My first slice i had an overwhelming taste of garlic and my second slice had no garlic flavor at all. It was inconsistent. Being from new jersey i know good pizza. The reviews on this place are misleading because that was just awful. I'm willing to try maybe one more time in the future since i do believe in second chances. Ray's is a local gem hidden away on old Cedar Road, but is a must-go restaurant. Okay, it isn't fancy, but it's not meant to be. Ray is the kind of owner who takes individualized attention to everything that comes out of his kitchen. Even though he had a kitchen assistant, he made my pizza himself. Look, everyone is strong opinions of what pizza should taste like. I've traveled the country on business and had pizza in most of it, including Brooklyn, Queens, Harlem, Manhattan and Jersey. Ray's pizza boasts fresh dough, fresh ingredients of excellent quality and a smooth flavorful not sweet sauce that is cooked to a light crispness with lots of creamy mozzarella. It was pretty great! I also had the Classic Italian hoagie with meats that tasted right from a deli in the best NYC Italian neighborhoods. I'm telling you, you don't get these meats anywhere else around here. The 6 inch sandwich was not only generous but enough for me to eat for lunch on its own. I don't think I could finish a 12 inch but could certainly share it! If you like accompaniments the garlic knots are amazing, especially of you're a garlic lover (what Italian food aficionado isn't?). They were lightly crisp outside and bready on the inside. Paired with the marinara sauce these are a little bit of heaven in a knot. And then there is Ray. Go. Talk. Listen. Leave feeling like you've known him for years. He does great work in the community too. When I return it will be for his dinner dishes. I can't wait. I'll update this review afterwards. read more

Ordered one 16 inch meat supreme. Pizza was very delicious and I would recommend. The only thing I would say, is if they could make a little crisper. It had lots of meats and that's a great thing, but with lots of meats, it makes it flimsy. We put in the air fryer and it was amazing. Overall, I would definitely recommend. Rays pizza is great. Best lasagna in Hampton roads. Meatballs are made in house, and the salads have perfect produce. Even the vinaigrette dressing is made in house. This is an old-school Italian style from New York City so if you're not used to that be prepared it's different than the cheaper places that cut corners. Since we moved into the area, locals have been telling us about Ray's Pizza. If I remember, it's a small "hole in the wall." I ordered for delivery on a Friday evening. The lady was super nice when taking my order. I ordered an extra large pepperoni pizza half mushrooms. We also ordered a Greek salad to share. She quoted 45-50 minutes time. It came here a little ate the time but no problem. Pizza was still hot. I had originally asked for extra feta but the lady insisted I hold off since they are generous with their feta cheese. (It would have been $2). Boy was she right! Lots of feta! This made my heart and mouth happy! Pizza was delicious! It was very close to NY style. This place was great! Ray's has the best Italian food. I always get the Tour of Italy which is the lasagna, manicotti, and stuffed shells. Or sometime instead of manicotti I get the baked ziti. The sauce is so good. Way better than your big chain restaurants. It's made when your order, it's always hot, fresh and just good. The desserts are the best. The tiramisu is the best I have ever had. This place has gone downhill fast, (MOLD AND ROACHES). The last time I went in there, multiple employees were talking amongst each other about their checks bouncing. I left on hold for over 10 minutes and had to call back to get my order taken. The food is hit or miss and I caught a picture of the mold on the wall. Ray was scratching himself and pulling up his pants, then preparing food for customers without washing his hands or putting gloves on. I talked to some of my friends/neighbors about this place and they have heard about ROACHES around the kitchen! I tried to call the Health Department a few weeks ago but they claimed to have the place "flagged" already, whatever that means. The owner (presumably Ray) doesn't even seem care about the state of things and no one that I have contacted has done anything about it. So I figured I would let you know on here. In summary: There is mold and cockroaches at this place and it continues to have them. No one in enforcement will do anything about it and the owner continues to let things get more disgusting. I had a Chicken Florentine pizza a couple of weeks ago and it was pretty good. I ordered another today and it was not good. Even though they had an hour to prepare my pie, it looked like it was haphazardly thrown together and it tasted the same. The toppings (chicken, spinach, tomato, garlic, mozzarella) were piled mostly on one side. This pizza also had a ton of ricotta. Ricotta wasn't on the pizza from to weeks ago, nor is ricotta in the description online. Also, the pizza was kind of cold when delivered. I only live about a mile away. I also ordered a side on jalapeño poppers. The poppers were not good. Poppers had to much breading and not enough pepper flavor. Inconsistency and lack of attention to detail are the reasons why I won't be returning to or recommending Ray's. read more

Food is not the same as back then. The old man forgets how to make his sauce here and there so you're lucky if it tastes the same every time you order. The kitchen staff is quite disgusting too, they never wear gloves and are always touching there face and wiping sweat off theirselves. And they NEVER wash their hands even after the bathroom. HIT OR MISS HIT OR MISS We live right down the street so Rays is the most convenient restaurant around. We have ordered from them numerous times over the years. Sometimes we get exactly what we order and it's wonderful. Other times they seriously lack consistency. My go to is a meat Stromboli. It seems like it's perfect- every other time I order it. Other times it's undercooked or under filled. Today we ordered 2 Stromboli like we normally do. A meat one and a steak one with added jalapeño. What did we receive? Two meat Stromboli, one with jalapeño. No steak. So close to being correct. It wouldn't be so irritating except for the fact that my husband went to pick them up and asked if they've been busy - the slice app said we'd have to wait 20 minutes longer for our order due to them being busy. The employee told my husband they haven't been busy at all. The opposite, in fact. It's been a slow day. Well, if it's been slow, couldn't we have at least gotten what we ordered? We didn't go back up there. We were hungry. $33 later, it may not be what we ordered, but were not hungry anymore, so that's something. It's just a shame because there's a y-not pizza down the road where we can get the same product for nearly the same price. I'd rather spend my money at a locally owned place, but I also want to get what I pay for. read more

Despite living in Chesapeake for a long time this was my first time at Ray's. Im always looking for a good pizza. Let me start by saying the service, friendliness, and vibe of the place is a real positive. It's a hole in the wall, but in a good sense. I got a warm feeling being there. I was really pulling for them. I started with wings. They're breaded and not good. I'm a bit of a wing snob, so breaded wings are an automatic no from me, but I was still pulling for them, so I tried. I will say that the sauce was tasty. My wife sort of improved the wings by putting them in the air fryer, but overall just a soggy mess, which is to be expected with breaded wings. So then to the pizza. I really wanted to add a new place to the rotation. Unfortunately I couldn't really go that far. I didn't hate it. The cheese was tasty and I liked the taste of the crust. The pizza was a little undercooked and the toppings were piled too close to the center. That ends up making the pizza a floppy mess. The way I could best describe their pizza is Local Papa John's. If you like Papa John's pizza give them a shot. For me, while I wouldn't turn it down, I also won't be seeking it out. That's too bad because I really liked the place. read more
