The two rolls we ordered tasted somewhat bland and felt like they were missing something. Unfortunately, the rolls we ordered were lacking fish. With 1/4 left on each of side of the cut roll there was no fish to be found, only veggies. That was disappointing and left me quite hungry towards the end of the meal. Think of sushi + burrito and you get Up Roll Café. I've been wanting to visit this quaint café ever since they opened, but I finally got the chance right after Thanksgiving last year. A friend and I visited Up Roll for an early lunch--around 11 a.m.--during the week, after a brief shopping trip at Ward. We were able to find street parking on Halekauwila, no problem. However, there are limited stalls right in front of the café. I immediately liked the vibe and ambiance of the café, upon entering. The chalkboard menus were innovative and fun to read, and the entire staff was friendly and helpful. Since it was our first time there, one of the girls behind the counter walked us through the ordering process. It sort of reminded me of a Chipotle-style ordering process, except you get the menu on laminated forms and you use dry-erase pens to make your selections. It was pretty easy, but I was torn between several menu items. After you order and pay, you can seat yourself in the dining area and they call your order when it's ready. The dining area is a little small, but since we were there early on a weekday, we were easily able to get a table. Otherwise, this is a good spot for take out. I would gladly visit Up Roll Café again. I was disappointed that they didn't have the ramen roll during my visit, but apparently, that's a special menu item (they were having it the next night at an extended hours event). Here's what my friend and I ordered: "Ahi Lover Bowl": My friend opted for this popular bowl but got it over greens instead of rice. It includes fresh ahi, green onions, cucumber, takuwan, and ginger sauce. Her bowl looked super colorful and she said all the ingredients tasted really fresh. I would love to try this combo sometime, but I would probably get it in roll form ... and if I got a bowl, there would be rice in it. "Sexy Salmon": I love salmon, so I opted for this roll and chose brown rice. This option came with fresh salmon, cucumber, takuwan, sprouts and a cream cheese miso sauce. I got my salmon sans the sprouts and cucumber, but everything else tasted delicious. They weren't skimpy when it came to the salmon, and I really enjoyed the cream cheese miso sauce as well. I know a lot of people would not get their sushi burritos with brown rice, but I thought it tasted just fine. I love being able to customize my order with those menus! Very user-friendly if you don't like specific ingredients. "Honey Milk Tea": It was a warm day, so this was a refreshing treat. I like my milk tea on the sweeter side so this selection didn't disappoint. It wasn't overly sweet but I could aptly taste the traces of honey. "Frozen Plantation Ice Tea": My friend got this frozen treat and said it was equally refreshing. She said it was a great addition to her salad bowl and highly recommended it. "Aioli Chicken": This was the other roll option I was considering, but I decided to save it for another visit. This combo features aioli chicken, cheese, sweet corn and sprouts. I would get it sans the sprouts, but I would probably go for brown rice and either the aioli mayo or the spicy mayo as my sauce. This place is alright. I didn't try the famous sushi burrito but opted instead for a bowl with salad. My entree of choice was the 'sexy salmon'. In and of itself, I felt that the quality/freshness of the sashimi wasn't that great and compared to my favorite salmon sashimi salad at Aloha Cones...this definitely is no where near-- with the prices being around the same. Taste wise, I didn't quite get it. The ingredients that come standard with the sexy salmon: takuan, miso, and cream cheese didn't really go together and I had a hard time even identifying what was in my bowl b/ they're chopped up really fine, almost like a mushy diced cole slaw consistency. For a salad, I think if they really change the way they cut the veggies/toppings, they could present the dishes in a more appealing way and it won't be as mushy. Also I didn't taste the cream cheese at all. The onion dressing I went for wasn't really special either, and it was a bit too watery in consistency. In addition to the veggies that come with the entree, you can choose free optional toppings such as lettuce/sweet onion/carrot/fried garlic/fried onion. I went for only the first three, and they didn't really do much for the dish TBH, it just added texture. They also give the option to add more toppings such as avocado for a small additional fee. So my impression isn't that great why 3 stars? I absolutely love what they have done with their space, not to mention everything is so minimalist. I love love love their design aesthetic. Clean lines, open airy corner location with large windows and open doors to let in the wind, artistic typography menu written in chalk...their 909 area code for their business # might also be a clue that the owners probably hail from California. Ah-ha! I get it now. Throw in some palm plants and hello popular california establishments seen all over Instagram! The biggest pro about Up Roll is that you can definitely find healthy meal here, so I cannot fault them for that. Also, I applaud them for offering a vegan option, not many places here make an effort to include non-meat eaters. While I think there is definitely room for improvement, I would still return, maybe to try something different, and that kinako latte everyone is raving about. I was so excited to try this place since Hawaii finally has a place that offers sushirritos! However, it was a real disappointment. Parking is not too difficult because there's street parking and you can park in the structure as well. It's $0.75 for a half hour, which is really reasonable. Once we arrived the lady at the counter gave us a clipboard to order. I ordered the ahi lovers roll with everything inside and the addition of avocados for $0.75 and my bf ordered the salmon roll. The total for both came out to be about $23. The size of it wasn't that big & honestly, it did not fill me up. I'm a person who doesn't eat a lot, so I was quite surprised. The entire sushi roll was very mushy and just not that great. In my opinion, the food was definitely not worth the price. First of all, the decor is amazing. It's trendy, hipstery, and very chic despite being simple. There is even a really cute play pen for kids in the back. The menu is displayed on the wall in large letters so you won't have to squint your eyes. Not to mention the penmanship is AMAZING. Whoever hand wrote that menu on the wall, A+ for handwriting! The menu itself is very simple. There are a few items you can choose from- ahi, salmon, tofu, chicken, etc. You then choose how you want your food prepared- roll or bowl (HAH kinda rhymes!). Then you can choose your sauce and toppings; there are a bunch of free toppings as well as toppings like avocado or natto for an extra charge. Up roll cafe definitely fits in in downtown Honolulu, amongst Kaka'ako's new and hip cafes, bars, and shops. Parking (street) is very limited from my experience, so if you're on foot on your lunch break, this place would be a great pick! Similar to the "chose your meat, and choose your veggies/sauces" idea of Subway, Up Roll allows the customer to fully customize your sushi roll. The sushirito craze is exploding all over the west coast so it comes as no surprise that Hawaii would eventually get its own customized sushi burrito cafe. I ordered the salmon with quinoa. I thought it was super unique to even have the option to choose quinoa, and gladly accepted the "up charge" of $2. The fish was fresh, and the quinoa was nicely cooked. The ambiance in the cafe is cool and hip. The concrete interior is complimented by industrial lights and wooden chairs and tables, along with chalk board art menus. I was taken aback at how cute this cafe was on the inside! Seating is limited (about 4-5 small tables) so take out is best. I gave this location four stars because the day I went in, my sushi "artist" was kind of busy talking to one of the patrons in the restaurant. I understand the importance of networking, and I'm sure they welcome friends and family to their joint, but I kind of felt like the service was diminished because of it. I love this place! Up Roll Cafe is a super cute Japanese-owned place serving up made-to-order custom rolls or bowls and unique coffee creations. They are located on the bottom of Halekuwila Place. There's public parking in that building, which charges by the half-hour (reasonable). You get a laminated card onto which you select the options for your order. You can choose between wrap or bowl style, select your main component (ahi, tofu, miso pork, etc), your starch (white or brown rice, quinoa for extra fee), and choose all your add on's and type of sauce. You also order your drinks this way and can choose between hot, iced, and type of milk (regular, almond, soy), among other options. I went with a miso pork roll with brown rice and the sesame sauce. Added on fried onion (yum) and some tofu. It was DELICIOUS and also healthy! As for the drink, I tried an almond kinako latte with an extra shot of espresso. The drink was very unique! The owners are a young couple, very friendly and helpful! However, we went when there was no line....and it took about 10 min to get all our orders. We saw that it got super packed when we were heading out. So obviously it may take a while if it's crowded since they make everything to order (the coffee drinks take time too) but that's fine with me because that's how you know that everything is fresh! Shucks... I had high hopes for Up Roll. I had the greatest experience at the famous Sushirritto chain in SF just a week before trying Up Roll, and was hoping Up Roll could serve as a satisfying alternative. But sadly it was not even close. For just about the same price, you can get a much bigger, much more packed, with better ingredients at Sushirritto. Nonetheless, I do appreciate the attempt. And obviously I don't live in NorCal to eat at Sushirrito. The sushi rolls at Up Roll are OK - not great, and not as filling, but the whole "build your own" idea is good. I like the options for brown rice or quinoa instead of only white rice. I also like the cute, quaint decor inside. LOCATION In Kakaako by the former Eat the Street parking lot. Can park street parking, or as others mentioned in the parking structure for a small fee. We went on a Friday afternoon and easily found street parking. SERVICE Walk in, use markers to check off what you want on the clipboard. Then walk around the corner to the other counter to pay and hand over the clipboard. A cute older Japanese couple kindly assisted us, not sure if they are the owners but mama diligently worked while carrying her baby lol.. I did notice the play pen in the corner, thought it was a little odd but it's not like it was in the way, or it was busy inside. FOOD So yea...the food is alright. I think my opinion of Up Roll would be much different if I had tried Up Roll first, or if I hadn't eaten at Sushirrito. Now lets start the actual review, Right when you walk in I can see the wall menu, and the roll maker doing his thing. Waited infront of the lady for 5 minutes who was busy making coffee. She didn't say anything, not a please hold on, thank you for waiting, nothing. At this point I was debating on leaving because I was there for about 10 minutes and my order was not taken and there wasn't anyone before me. I decided to just wait so I put in my order in. On the menu it says that if you want it as a salad it has to be in a bowl so I was pretty bummed because I wamted to try it as a roll. So I just got the Ahi Lover with brown rice. But the chef was making someones order before me and he was making the salad in a roll form. So I was even more bummed because I could've ordered that. Anyways, I waited another 10 minutes for the rolls. The chef makes it and leaves it for the lady to pack it up and distribute it. So it took a couple of minutes for her to get to it. In my opinion they could use another helper so the customers are greeted and assisted in a timely manner. Taste wise it was really tasty. There's enough ahi in every bite and lots of flavor. This sushi experience offers customization, and, of course, delectability. Hip sushi. Up Roll Cafe blends the customization of Subway with sushi. Upon ordering, you fill out a laminated order sheet. First, you choose whether you want your sushi as a roll or in a bowl. Second, choose from a selection of seven basic sushi ensembles. You then choose to have your ensemble with rice (white/brown) or as a salad. Finish off your customization with a sauce and additional fillings. As a first timer it was hard to come to a decision, as all ensembles sound equally amazing. In the end I went with the Pork Miso, which comes with ground miso pork, cucumber, sweet corn, and takuwan (pickled radish). I got in as a roll with white rice. The size of the roll and overall taste and satisfaction was worth the $8.95 (excluding tax). Hearing nothing but rave reviews about Up Roll Cafe, it's a food stop that definitely was needed, and beyond happy to have finally experienced first hand. The space set up is a little confusing because you see a counter when you walk in the door, but that is the pick up counter and you order at another around the corner. So if you're an artist, get permission from them to show off your skills. I mean, it is in Kakaako, so what better place. I ordered the miso pork roll with brown rice and some fixins, it took a little long because, there's only two of them and of course, the lunch crowd. But after the first bite of my burrito-sushi, all that disappeared. The roll was so good, the miso pork was full of flavor and needless to say, fulfilling. You walk in and are greeted by chalkboard walls, a Subway-style set up with everything you could ever want in a sushi roll, raw wood tables, and cool light fixtures. Being our first time, the lady behind the counter was helpful in explaining what we do - grab a laminated menu and mark off what you'd like in your roll or bowl (think The Counter). Oh, and I forgot the entire point of this place - they're GIANT SUSHI ROLLS. BURRITO sized sushi rolls. I've been waiting for this since my first time trying sushi and thinking "delicious, but not enough food!" After building your sushi roll, you can also choose from a selection of hand crafted coffees. I'm telling you, sushi and coffee? It's the fuel of the 21st century. We didn't have to wait long to get our food and drinks and we devoured our delicious, giant burrito/sushi hybrids. They were tasty and just what you'd imagine an oversized sushi roll to be like. This is definitely a "come on over on your lunch break!" kinda place - the hours and whole "not being open on Saturdays" deal definitely suggest that. Up Roll Cafe is the perfect addition to Kaka'ako. Sushi rolls & coffee to go: Genius! I was excited when I saw that this place had popover breakfast sandwiches, but honestly, i was disappointed. I tried the bacon & egg popover sandwich, and the presentation was nice, but taste, not so great. The egg & bacon inside were both cold. Didn't really taste like anything, so I was sad because I was really looking forward to it! The sushi roll I ordered was the Ahi Lover's roll, which was the most expensive one on the menu, over $10. It was really good, with a ton of fillings! They serve the sushi rolls burrito style, which was different. I think next time I'll ask for no ginger, though. I want to try a few more of the sushi rolls they have on the menu, they look promising. Along with the breakfast sandwich, Rachel ordered the Matcha Latte. It was cool to see those designs they make on the top, and it was the first Matcha Latte I ever tried, but I'm not really a fan. Their inside is just big enough, with a few tables and some counter seating, but I don't really see them getting packed and busy, so it should be perfect for them. They have a couple of tables outside as well. The staff is super friendly and made us feel very welcomed there. Up Roll Cafe is a cute little Japanese style healthy cafe located in the Kakaako area. The owners are a young Japanese couple, really welcoming and friendly (: The style of this cafe is really young and chic. The decor is raw and vintage with a modern spin! You can order and build your own salad/bowl/roll to whatever you want on the clipboard right when you walk in. After marking off what you want, you can just bring it to the counter to pay and they'll immediately start making it! My fave at Up Roll cafe is definitely the Ahi Lover Salad with Vinegar dressing and some few extra toppings, like avocado,sweet corn, onions, and some cucumber! A little reminder to keep in mind is to not come here if you're in a rush! Up Roll Cafe is usually packed and the food usually takes around 15-20 minutes to be ready, plus more if there are multiple orders in front of yours. The concept of a sushi burrito was pretty cool. However, I think my preference is with regular sushi. I came here on a weekday with a good friend and my sister. We both ordered the ahi poke burrito with some extra toppings like avocado and sprouts. The portion of rice to fish wasn't as great as we'd like. Also, the sushi ginger mixed in was . . . . unique. My sister wasn't a fan, but I didn't mind it. A conclusion that the three of us came too was that the rice tasted . . . very clean??? Is that the way to describe it? The rice was very bland, a little too mushy, and didn't compliment the fish or veggies. It just tasted very clean, like someone washed the rice 3+ times until the water ran clear and then cooked it. No additional seasoning, no sushi vinegar or anything. Side note: the nori was awesome. By this I mean, I didn't struggle to bite into the nori like you typically would with hand-rolls. Side note 2: Matcha latte was tasteless. I needed to add plenty of simple syrup to sweeten it up and give it a little kick of some sort. The cafe was cute and I loved the atmosphere and decor. The rustic chic look was unique and made for a pleasant environment. I liked the chalk walls and the cool ceiling fans. Just a really cute space. Perhaps I needed to try a different roll. I would say, try it and check it out! See for yourself if you enjoy it and if it's a hit! For me, I'll definitely try it again in the future and order something else to switch it up. read more

Maybe I've been ordering the wrong things, but I just don't care for this place at all. I've had the miso pork and the teriyaki chicken in both roll and bowl form. The meat is very wet and mushy...I just can't get on board with that texture! Otherwise, the ingredients seem fresh, and the ordering process is simple and efficient. read more

Uproll Cafe is my FAVORITE place, EVER. I bring all of my friends and family here! They ALL love it too. Manny & Anna are the sweetest and cutest couple who own joint and their hospitality is like no other. Some people might think "...Coffee + Sushi....?" Well, yes. You don't have to pair those two together but I usually cannot start my day without coffee. So I usually get a Latte while I wait for my food. Then I get a Jasmine Jelly Tea to pair with my customized bowl. The usual bowl I get is: Quinoa with Ahi. I add Cilantro, sprouts, natto, and Avocado. I used to get the rolls but when I switched over from brown rice to quinoa, I realized it was better suited as a bowl since quinoa isn't sticky like rice would be. As for the Jasmine Jelly Tea, omg yum. I LOVE jasmine tea. A little note: This drink isn't sweet. So it pairs well with the bowl in my opinion. You can also rent out the whole restaurant and do a catering style + birthday parties etc. they have a projector you can play your video and huge speakers/ great sound system AND they have Air conditioning !!! Pure genius... Why has no one thought of this before? Giant sushi burritos... Brilliant. I ordered the chicken wrap with white rice, spicy sauce, and all the options. It tasted amazing and I was worried that I would still be hungry after but I was actually pretty full :) I loved the food, and the ambiance of the the restaurant was great too. It was a real homie kind of place with chalkboard walls and a really welcoming couple working. They even had this really cute baby hanging out in a play pin in the corner. I love the location of the restaurant because it's right down in Kakaako, which is starting to be the new hip place, so there's lots of places in walking distance to check out. After our meal we walked over to see the wine and sake store next door and we walked down to Paiko to see all the little plants. Over all it was a great place that I really plan on going back to a lot more. read more

I've been wanting to try Up Roll Cafe for awhile now and finally got to yesterday! The bffl and I walked over from her place a little after 4 p.m. Looks like there is only street parking so I was glad we were able to take a short walk over, order our rolls and take it to go for an early dinner! We entered the small cafe to find just two other customers eating inside and another couple eating on the tables outside. The friendly guy at the front noticed that we looked a little confused and walked us through what Up Roll Cafe was all about. He took us over to the laminated little menus and markers and explained that we just write our name up top and check off what we want to order (bowl or roll, type of filling, type of base, sauce and any additional toppings). How fun! I decided on the teriyaki chicken roll, with brown rice, lettuce, carrot and fried garlic with ginger dressing. The bffl ordered the miso pork roll with white rice, lettuce, sweet onion, carrot, and friend garlic with ginger dressing. The cafe itself is pretty small but super cute! I really like the decor, chalkboard menu and soft music playing in the background. We decided to watch him make our rolls...I wonder if everyone watches them make the rolls like we did. The rice comes out of a fancy little machine perfectly flattened out and ready to be rolled! Next, the nori is placed on top and the nori/rice combo is placed on a sushi roll mat. Friendly guy (I didn't catch his name) then adds all the toppings that we marked down on the order form. Our dinners were rolled, rolled again in wax paper and rolled again in foil. Now onto the taste. Both of our rolls were delicious! At first I thought I would just eat half and save the other half for later. We both finished our rolls! So yummy and fun to eat! The ginger dressing was good, but a little hard to use. I think it would be better if I had a salad or a bowl. The dressing is quite liquidy and made a mess (it doesn't help that I am not the neatest eater). Bonus points for having healthier choices. I like that I have the option of having brown rice, quinoa or a salad. I really wish Up Roll Cafe was open for dinner and on Saturdays! I will be back and hope to try an ahi roll next! read more

I heard about this place from my friend since she loves sushi. So we checked it out for brunch. The place is pretty easy to find. Street parking is available but very limited because of the construction being done. there's also a parking structure of the place but you have to pay (card only) how fancy! The place is so cute. The wall is a chalk paint with writings all over(menu, and how to eat the burrito) and a tree drawing in the back. There's also a few kids toys (trucks, strollers, etc) because of the owners kid, who comes once in a while if I heard correctly. Okay so first time orderers, there's a "what do you prefer" menu in front of the cashier with a marker. I called it that only because that's what I know it's for. You pick what you want exactly inside. I've been there twice already and I know what's on that menu: you want a burrito or a bowl, your protein (ahi, salmon, chicken) and if you want extra, the sauce, vegetables and extra toppings. Now besides the food, there's drinks are pretty good as well. I got a plantation tea and my friend got the iced matcha tea I think, and they were both good. I saw on there ig page of a strawberry float. I thought they wouldn't have it anymore but I showed the picture to the worker and she said they can still make it. It was a strawberry and mint soda float w/ strawberry gelato. It was really good!!! I even ordered it the second time I went. Basically, if you want GUILT FREE food, this is the place to go if your down in the area. You leave the place full, but not heavy. read more

Family, friendly place that serves sushi and coffee. Just going to say that the food and coffee are creative and delicious, but if you have a big appetite the sushi roll will not fill you up. Me and my bf got 2 different rolls, salmon and pork miso roll. It was really Ono and the salmon is fresh. We also tried there coffee jelly and coffee float which was also delicious. In the coffee float it's basically plain ice coffee with your choice of 5 different flavors of gelato. To draw on the wall you need to ask first before doing so and sometimes they might not have chalk so bring your own. Everything in there is nice and unique but the chairs are like Japanese style so sitting on those can be sore. For parking wise, you can park in the area where they hold eat the street for $4 for 0-2 hours, street parking or the parking area inside the building. read more

What a gem! The inside of this place has a great vibe. I could see myself going there to study and also going with friends. The food was great! I had the ahi with the spicy mayo and my husband got the miso pork with the aoli. We both thought the flavor on the miso pork was better. I'll definitely be going back again soon! read more

This place is definitely worth the try! I love the idea of a sushi burrito; it's so unique and super delicious! Up Roll offers many different options and add-ons to your sushi burrito! I love that you are given the choice of having it in a bowl version as well. Every time I've been here, I always get the Sexy Salmon and I LOVE IT. Super delicious and keeps me full! The atmosphere here is welcoming and cute. I love their chalkboard menu and the furniture. It's very modern! The only reason I'm giving it 4 stars is because the wait for the food is a little bit long. Besides that, it's a one of a kind place! I will definitely come back to satisfy my cravings! read more
